We provide a network of training resources that support specific improvement needs, in any language. Over 35% of Fortune 500 companies use UL’s software to run their safety, training and health programs. Our classroom or online training covers topics like: adherence to codes of conduct and industry standards, international and local environmental and labor standards, worker safety, and human rights.

Examples of UL’s involvement in projects and initiatives related to responsible agriculture sourcing:

Risk Mapping and Strategy DevelopmentUL’s Responsible Sourcing group was hired by a large chemical company seeking to invest in palm oil production for personal care products. The Responsible Sourcing team performed a sustainability analysis for palm oil, which included a gap analysis of current sustainability standards applicable to palm oil cultivation, harvesting and refinement, as well as an examination of best industry practices for corporate sustainability in palm oil production. The results of this work helped inform the client’s strategy for entering a new country through the development of sustainability criteria for palm oil cultivation, harvesting and refinement for the company’s investments and suppliers.

Comprehensive Labor AssessmentsUL conducts in-depth labor assessments for several companies to help them fully understand the human rights and labor issues in their supply chains for crops like sugar, tobacco, and fruits. The assessments encompass desk and field research, field audits and worker interviews, and engagement with external stakeholders to obtain a comprehensive view of the issues. Reports are issued, outlining recommendations for improvement of management systems and stakeholder partnerships.

Large-Scale Farm MonitoringUL works with several multinational companies to assess working conditions on supplier farms for crops like sugar, corn, tobacco, tomatoes, nuts, pineapple, rubber, and tea. We have assessed over 2,000 farms to date in more than 20 countries.

Thought Leadership on Labor Issues in the Agriculture IndustryUL participates in several key agriculture multi-stakeholder initiatives. We served as a member of the US Department of Agriculture’s Consultative Group to Eliminate the Use of Child Labor and Forced Labor in Imported Agricultural Products. The Consultative Group developed recommended guidelines to reduce the likelihood of agricultural products imported into the United States being produced with the use of child or forced labor.

UL also serves as an advisor and service provider to the Sugar Association of El Salvador in its efforts to eliminate child labor from its supply chain. Through our five-year partnership, we continue to help the group develop and implement long-term child labor monitoring and training programs for sugar cane suppliers. At a public event held in 2012, the Association announced a reduction of child labor by 85% on supplier farms.

UL is a leading global provider of responsible sourcing auditing and advisory services, which include supply chain monitoring, research and program development, and training. UL’s Responsible Sourcing team has the global footprint to provide services in over 140 countries.
