Darrell was born December 3,1939 in Irene, to Leslie and An-netta (Mork) Swensen. He at-tended Plainview Country SchoolDistrict 32 of rural Irene andgraduated from Irene HighSchool in 1957. He was draftedinto the U.S. Army from 1964 to1966. He was a member of TurkeyValley Baptist Church and wascurrently attending Riverview Re-formed Church in Yankton, SD.He was also a member of the HallThompson American Legion Post#193 of Irene.

Darrell married Yvonne K.Eilmes on June 24, 1972 at theUnited Church of Christ in Scot-land. They had three children;Mark, Kari and Marty. Darrell andYvonne lived on the family farmnear Irene where they farmed upto the time of his death. Darrellloved farming and always hadlivestock around. He was alsoknown for building and fixing justabout anything. He was a friendto everyone he met, especially tohis neighbors. Darrell was anamazing person who loved hisfamily. He was the best grandpato all of his grandchildren whomhe loved spending time witheven if it was just for a shortvisit.

Darrell is survived by his wifeof 40 years, Yvonne of Irene, chil-dren; Mark (Kerri) Swensen ofFreeman, Kari (Glen) Neuharth ofMenno, and Marty (Jodi)

He was preceded in death byhis parents, Leslie and AnnettaSwensen, infant daughter NicoleAnnette Swensen, brother andsister-in-law Dale and CharlotteSwensen, sister and brother-in-law Frances and Kenneth Mellem,niece Cynthia Hopf, nephew GregMellem, father and mother-in-lawRuben and Lorene Eilmes and sis-ter-in-law Joyce Schnabel.

MMC Nursing Program Welcomes SpeakerThe Mount Marty College nursing program will welcome Joanne

Disch, Ph.D., RN, FAAN as the keynote speaker at the 2012 EndowedChair Nursing Symposium. The symposium will be held at the AveraProfessional Office Pavilion on the Sacred Heart Hospital Campus onThursday, Nov. 8.

Dr. Disch is Clinical Professor and Director of the Katharine J.Densford International Center for Nursing Leadership, and holds theKatherine R. and C. Walton Lillehei Chair in Nursing Leadership at theUniversity of Minnesota School of Nursing. She has extensive experi-ence as chief nurse executive, leader, researcher, policy-maker,spokesperson, and educator-teaching at the undergraduate and grad-uate levels. She also has particular expertise in clinical teaching, lec-tures, ITV format and web-based coursework.

Dr. Disch has been a QSEN (Quality & Safety Education forNurses) Core faculty member for Phases I, II, and III and is a memberof the RWJ-AACN/QSEN Project.

Her clinical expertise, scholarship and teaching are focused onleadership and nurse/physician relationships. Dr. Disch is the con-tent lead for teamwork and collaboration and patient/family centeredcare within the current AACN/QSEN project. She has worked with fac-ulty in many schools of nursing helping them incorporate the QSENcompetencies into the curriculum, and lead major organizationalchange in improving the learning environment for faculty, staff andstudents.

The symposium will feature two sessions — a morning sessionand an identical afternoon session. The purpose of the event is to ed-ucate and inform nurses and nursing students about strategies to im-prove healthcare and will benefit nurses, nurses in academia andnursing students in health care.

Registration deadline for the event is Nov. 2. Boat Basin Near Santee To See ConstructionThe boat basin at Santee Recreation Area will be undergoing reha-

bilitation starting sometime around the second week of November.The basin will be dredged to improve boating access in the basin andto the ramp.

Once work begins, it is anticipated that the boat ramp will beclosed for approximately two weeks for the project to be completed.

LAKE ANDES — The U.S. Fishand Wildlife Service (USFWS) isholding a public meeting today(Tuesday) on the draft plan forthe Lake Andes National WildlifeRefuge (NWR) Complex.

The meeting will be held from7-9 p.m. at the Lake Andes Com-munity Center, 207 West MainStreet. The USFWS will explainkey issues and answer questions,then open the meeting to publiccomments.

In addition, public commentswill be accepted until Nov. 30.

The complex includes theLake Andes NWR, Lake AndesWetland Management District(WMD) and Karl E. Mundt NWR.

The draft plan identifies theneed for a management plan andthe legal foundation for managingthe refuge. The draft will look atmanagement options, includingno alternative action, the pro-posed action and the intensivemanagement alternative.

Under the proposed action,the staff would use a science-

based priority system to managethe refuge for long-term produc-tivity. Management efforts wouldfocus on maintaining and restor-ing native grasslands and wet-land complexes according totheir priority ranking.

All refuge lands would be man-aged. However, emphasis wouldbe given first to lands rankedhigher by the science-based sys-tem.

The public can comment onthe plan through written letters,emails, faxes or by attending thepublic meeting. The USFWS en-courages public feedback on theplan.
