A small model for a large site in Chicago from Audrey Ward’s second year design studio project sits on a shelf in my office. A colleague often reminds me when he steps into my office that he wants me to will it to him. The project was modest in some ways, miraculous and insightful in others. Mostly, it represents an intuitive response from a gifted student who landed in the right place and the right program for one with her sensibilities, as she is an architect and designer at heart. After the intuitive response, intelligence followed, if tentatively and with uncertainty. One expects this, of course, for a student still early in her career in something as crazy, abstract, subjective as architecture. Though it will not be readily apparent in everything she does, and she’ll not have a perfect upward trajectory, she’ll be at or near the top of her class when she graduates. If we serve her well enough in the last couple years of her education, and if she finds the appropriate mentors and complementary experience, Audrey is amongst the rare few students whose future work one may reasonably expect to leave a discernible dent in the world.
