Title: Analysis of Buried Pipelines Subjected to Reverse Fault MotionSupervisor: Prof. Sudhir K Jain
Abstract: Buried steel pipelines with continuous joints are commonly used for oil & gastransport. The pipeline may have to pass through an active fault zone on the way as itcarries the content over a long distance. It is then necessary to design the pipeline to safelyaccommodate the expected fault offset without breaking or rupture of the pipeline. Theexisting analytical methods developed for analysis of pipeline at fault crossing are suitablefor strike-slip fault and normal-slip faults. The inherent assumptions and simplificationsmake these methods unsuitable for the case of reverse fault crossing. The present studyproposes a simple finite element model for the analysis of pipeline at reverse fault crossing. The model has been developed using a commercial finite element software ABAQUS(Version 6.7). Buried pipeline has been modelled as a beam supported by nonlinear soil-
springs at discrete points. Performance of pipeline at reverse fault crossing has beenevaluated using the proposed model, under different conditions of crossing angle, dip angle, native soil & backfill property, pipe surface property and burial depth. Suitable designrecommendations for reverse fault crossing have been proposed based on the evaluatedperformance. An illustrative design example is presented at the end, which incorporates theproposed recommendations to improve pipelines performance at reverse fault crossing.

Title: Mechanized Construction of Concrete Road Pavement Using Slip-Form Technique.Supervisor: Prof. Mrs. P. R. AdaviAbstract: Horizontal slip-form technique of road pavement construction using a slip formpaver was studied for its advantages and disadvantages. The entire procedure of roadconstruction using this technique was studied at an ongoing project of rehabilitation of NH-4 (Pune-Bangalore stretch). Different operational aspects of road paver machine wereinvestigated. The cost analysis was performed with available data to calculate the cost ofconstruction per meter of the road length.
