8/8/2019 Resume Template - Skills-Based With Tips and Advice
1/3
Your NameTel: 999.999.9999 101 Your Address, Your City XY 99999 [email protected]
[This resume is for those who have a degree in a particular field (the example here is
Communication), but who do not yet have job experience in that area. It can also be modifiedfor those without a degree or with only coursework or certificates. The idea is to highlight
who you are as a worker and focus on what you have to offer vs. what you may not have yetattained.
Skills-based resumes are also useful for those who may have had several jobs, especiallyentry-level, who want employers to focus on their job skills rather than get hung up on dates
of employment and job moves or any other limitations. It is vital to gear your resume to thejob you want in the best possible light, so here are some ideas! In this example, the person
has food industry and retail experience, but wants to find work in the Communication fielddoing movie editing.]
EDUCATION
B.S., Communication, XYZ University, City State
[Also, list any honors here as well as GPA, but only if it is a high GPA]
SKILL SET
[Highlight your job skills, software, and specific trade skills here; also include anycertificates here if they emphasize a skill set (such as certificates in a particular software
application); otherwise certificates may be listed in Education section if related to a specificcareer field.]
15 years customer service focus promoting quality communications, customer satisfaction
and retention, promoting company image, team facilitation, and complaint resolution
Proficient in Macintosh & PC platforms, Microsoft Office Word; Cool Edit Pro; Final Cut Pro
EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE
[Here is an optional section where you can highlight the skills you have that are based on
your degree work, which is especially useful if your experience is degree vs. job based. Be
sure to gear your resume to the job you are applying for. If you are applying for a retail job, your movie-editing experience may not be relevant; be sure you are thinking of your audience
when sending out a resume. Having several resumes for each type of job you are seeking
takes a little time to set up but is very useful in the long-run and will help you land that job!]
Director and editor of short films with emphasis on rack focus, framing and nonlinear
editing; edits/cuts done with use of Imovie and Final Cut Pro
Writer, director and editor of public service announcements for independent study project
Knowledgeable in audio and video production, post-production, camera work, floordirecting; compilation, writing, and editing news packages; screenwriting; andproofreading
WORK EXPERIENCE
[For a skills-based resume, list industry type or types (if more than one) and note
companies and general job descriptions that apply to each industry. This resume format isbest used if youve had several short-term jobs or entry-level jobs. You want to make the
skills the focus, not the amount of time in each job. If you get an interview, be positive ifasked about time periods and prepared to talk about how you have benefitted from having a
variety of jobs that have taught you valuable skills, but that your desire is to get on a solid

career path. Be present and future focused while honoring what your past experience hasgiven you and always be positive about your goals and desires! Indicate you are willing to do
what it takes to make them happen!]
Food Service (Papa Johns, Pizza Hut, Ryans, Schwans Home Service, Inc.)
Promoted quality customer service, sales, and facilitated complaint resolution
Processed customer transactions, maintained store inventories, and prepared orders
Ensured store cleanliness to corporate standards, in compliance with OSHA regulations
Built customer relationships through phone and direct communications to ensure loyalty
Directed client sales and ensured prompt delivery of product for customer satisfaction
[Be sure to be truthful while highlighting experience in the best possible light. If you went
through an hour-long OSHA training, list it if it has relevance to the job you want. If you werehanded an OSHA brochure that you never read, and you dont know what OSHA is, dont list it
or consider researching it so you can list it. There is nothing wrong with getting yourselfeducated through independent study!
Just remember, whatever you note in your resume is fair game to be discussed in aninterview; therefore highlight what you understand, what you know you can learn with a little
study, and what you believe might be important to a future employer, not just fluff that you
think sounds good. Be sure not to fib about anything. Delivery is key! If you took a class inExcel, note Excel in your skills, but be honest in an interview and say you have user-levelknowledge and may have a short learning curve to come up to speed. Use sound judgment,
however. Only list Excel in your resume and say you could learn it easily if it is really possiblefor you. If you were completely lost in the class and it would take a million years to
understand that crazy program, dont put it in your resume! Understand your ability level andwork with it. Know your strengths and weaknesses, without judging yourself. They can work
for you in a resume and in an interview!
Again, be prepared to give examples of each statement you make. It is best NOT to over-
inflate your qualities (for instance: Extended excellent, quality customer service in the mostprofessional manner possible), as it may highlight your ego rather than your skill. Let job
references tell your future employer how wonderful and fabulous you are. Show your
strengths in a resume while being humble. If you did receive praise for excellence, be sure to note that you received special
recognition or feedback in instances where you could offer some proof of it through written or
verbal recommendations or if it was documented somewhere, such as in a job review. If youdont have documentation, go ahead and note it if it was given to you in a formal way (such
as if you received the honor of Highest Ranking Salesperson of the Month for October 2010).
The truth of it will come through in an interview setting, even without backup to prove it.To say my customers loved me is harder to prove, unless you can speak of specific
examples of such feedback.
It is important to keep such communications, even if they came over email, from pastexperiences, as they may provide you with an edge in future jobs. Consider beginning a
portfolio of whatever kind of work you do, if feasible. If done tastefully, you can bring this
portfolio to an interview and ask if you can share it (be sure to ask, some interviewers mayfind it unnecessary, depending on the type of work you are seeking). Be sure they showexamples of your work (if relevant to the job) and that significant feedback, praise,
certificates, or award documentation are included; just be sure to keep it relevant and presentit humbly; this information is to help your future employer see that you are a good pick for
them based on your past achievements. If you dont have such a portfolio, no worries!!!These can be developed over time and are not a necessity for most jobs out there. A good
resume and positive attitude are the number one requirements in finding the job you desire!]
