RESUMES

What is a Resume? Think of your resume as a concise summary that introduces employers to your most relevant experiences. This document highlights your transferrable skills, education, and experience. Written for employers, its purpose is to convince the reader that you have the necessary qualifications to fulfill the needs of the job.

CURRIVULUM VITAES (C.V.)

What is a Curriculum Vitae? A curriculum vitae or CV provides a more detailed description of academic achievements and experiences. A CV is often submitted when applying for graduate school admission, graduate assistantships, and fellowships. While a resume often describes job experiences and skills in a short, concise format, a CV is longer (2-4 pages) and more appropriate for graduates who have been out for a few years. Often, a CV features a greater emphasis on academic achievements, publications, research experiences, awards, and teaching experiences. How do you use LinkedIn? LinkedIn is a very helpful and widely-used method that students and professionals use. It is a quick and easy way to showcase your resume, network with others, and search for jobs. Please visit http://www.macalester.edu/cdc/resources/guides for more specific information on how to start and maintain a good LinkedIn profile.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ON RESUMES Will a resume get me a job? A clean, professional, up-to-date resume is a critical piece in job searching. However, it is just one piece. The CDC and Internship Program strongly recommend each job seeker to develop all job search skills, including career and field research, networking, informational interviewing, job interviewing, etiquette, and establishing a professional presence online (via LinkedIn and other mediums). Does a resume always have to be 1 page? Short answer: it depends. While in college, the CDC and Internship Program recommend structuring your resume to fit into one page. Remember, an employer typically reviews a resume for less than ten seconds! You want to prioritize the critical information that conveys your skills. If you elect to have a resume longer than a page, make sure you utilize efficient and strategic formatting to convey that the resume is longer, and the length is warranted. Also, make sure that the information for one position does not flow from one page to the next. Replicate headers with “Continued” for ease of reading. I don’t think I can fill the 1 page, what do I do? Typically, students do not elaborate on their accomplishments and relevant experiences enough. Using the “Common Components of Resumes” on the next page, create content for each section. Incorporate relevant class projects, volunteer experiences, and student organization involvement. Meet with a CDC counselor or the Internship Program to refine your resume. Do I have to include my GPA? Usually, employers assume your GPA is below 3.0 if it is omitted from a resume. If your GPA is lower than 3.0, speak to a CDC counselor or the Internship Program about how to best reflect this on your resume. Options may include listing your GPA within your major, or your current major.

COMMON COMPONENTS OF RESUMES

This section offers a brief overview of components often seen in resumes of college students and recent graduates. Name & Identification: Include your name, email, telephone number and current address. Add a permanent address if you expect to move in the next six months. If relocating for a job search, candidates often consider including a local address. For seniors and recent graduates, use an email address that will be accessible following the closure of your Macalester email. Education: Include the name of the college, along with the city and state. Include the degree you plan to receive (Bachelor of Arts at Macalester), and your expected graduation month and year. List your major(s), minor(s), concentration(s) and your GPA (if 3.0 or higher). Also include your study abroad experiences. Leave off high school information unless you are featuring other experiences (work or volunteer) from your high school, or plan to look for jobs in that geographic area. You also have the option to include relevant coursework, but limit to 3-5 courses that are most pertinent to the position. Work Experience: Resumes commonly list work experience either in chronological order or grouped by categories of experience. List the organization name, city/state/country, dates of employment, and a brief, bulleted description of your work. Use action phrases to highlight responsibilities and skills gained. Civic Engagement Experience: Paid and/or volunteer positions offer invaluable experiential learning that should be listed on a resume. List experiences in a similar fashion to work experience. Leadership or Activities: this reflects extracurricular activities such as involvement in student organizations, athletics, and contributions to campus. Make sure to include any leadership or elected positions. Skills: Include technical/computer skills, fluency or proficiency in other language(s), experience using lab or special equipment, or certifications (i.e. CPR) and licensure that are relevant to the position.

ADDITIONAL COMPONENTS TO CONSIDER Related Experiences: Some individuals group their pertinent work, civic engagement, academic and extracurricular experiences into one category based on the job description. Summary of Qualifications: This is a brief statement that summarizes your immediate goal and informs the reader of the skills you have to offer. Make sure this statement is concise and tailored to the position for which you are applying. A bland, generic statement is a waste of space! Honors: List scholarships, honors and academic awards received. Make sure to give context for the award (i.e. Who awarded it? How were you selected? Why? Duration of the award?) Publications & Presentations: List any published materials that you have written or co-authored. Include a listing for relevant presentations you have conducted. Professional Organizations: Include memberships and any elected roles you have held within organizations. Academic Projects: You may include a significant long-term project completed for a class that represents important skills, research, and knowledge gained.

RESUME HELPFUL HINTS

Know your rights: A few words about employment discrimination

The United States Equal Opportunity Commission (EEOC) enforces federal laws prohibiting employment

discrimination. Under the laws enforced by EEOC, it is illegal to discriminate against someone (applicant or

employee) because of that person’s race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy), national origin, age (40+),

disability or genetic information. Current federal laws do not consistently include protection of sexual

orientation for private sector employment. Candidates are encouraged to also review local and state laws that

offer greater protection for job seekers and employees.

Regrettably, discrimination continues to occur. Often, candidates choose to exclude any potentially

discriminatory information within their job application materials, including their resume. Some candidates

choose to exclude organizations against which the audience may be prejudiced.

Many employers are proud to promote a welcoming hiring philosophy and workplace culture. Job seekers are

also strongly encouraged to research employers to identify pros and cons of the workplace environment,

culture, policy and benefits.

Candidates are encouraged to speak with CDC counselors or the Internship Program individually to

discuss their concerns and identify strategies for dealing with this kind of discrimination.

Every resume should…

Offer an accurate depiction of the candidate’s most pertinent skills and experiences

Appear easy to read and navigate from a passing glance. An employer should be able to scan your resume for critical information in less than ten seconds

Show a clear hierarchy of pertinent content

Feature concise but also descriptive content

Be reviewed and proof-read to avoid typos

Resumes should NOT include…

Any lies or exaggerations of experience

Mistakes, misspellings and formatting errors

Photos

Passive language: do not include phrases like “Job included” or “Responsibilities were” that do not convey any action

Salary or hourly wage

References: they are not a part of your resume. When they are requested, place them in a separate document with similar formatting

Templates: the CDC and Internship Program discourage the use of Microsoft Word templates for resumes. They are widely used and non-distinct. Often, text is difficult to manipulate within the template, making updating the template very difficult
