The Swan represents transition, and was chosen for the transition you are looking for and can provide yourself through a meditation practice at Swan & Water. In the Celtic mind, swans are observed for their transitory nature. The sign of the swan urges us to consider changes of mood and heart. If you have any curiosities about a meditation practice, we have designed an environment for the expoloration of dreamier depths and feelings.

Water provides life to all elements of life. Our bodies are composed of 97% water. Symbolically, water expresses Fluidity, Intuition, Dreaming, Emotions, Creativity. Have you ever taken note of your emotions and well-being while near a body of water? Our Tea Cart is operated in the lounge area of our studio, on the third floor of our Osborne Village location. We have a curated selection of organic teas, available for purchase after you take practice, or anytime you are in the area and want to come in to say hi! If you bring your own mug and tea bag, we’ll fill you up and get ya steepin’!

We are becoming what may be called the ‘Stress Age’. Many people are realizing the health detriments of stress- and looking for solutions. We are also advancing ideas so quickly through technology. We are observing yoga apparel stores, yoga classes, and meditation practices that are designed for children. We also see ‘yogi’s’ living long, healthy lives. Meditation is for everyone, at their availability, and at their convenience.

Where? Right now we have a studio space in Winnipeg Manitoba. Behind the scenes exists a small team of employees and founders, who run the business from their homes, offices, local coffee shops, and/or wherever they are travelling at this time. Our front of house employees are local residents of Winnipeg. They have a passion for the health and wellbeing of the members of their Winnipeg communities.

Where is Swan & Water?

100 Osborne StreetFloor Two, Room 205

S&W is located on the second floor of a beautiful brick building in the heart of Osborne Village, Winnipeg, Manitoba. Osborne Village “has evolved into a vibrant mixed use neighbourhood. Near downtown, this century-old and densely populated community is filled with character, boasting a pedestrian-oriented and transit-supportive urban form that offers a unique collection of restaurants and shops.” (Kimberley Harrison-McMillan) We have chosen this location for two reasons. Firstly, to serve the myriad of employees and residents who inhabit or frequent this region of the city. Secondly, during the search for a vacant retail space, this second floor and courtyard location spoke the most to our programming dreams and spatial requirements. Osborne Village is home to hundreds of businesses, both big and small, local and franchised. Grocery stores, restaurants, clothing shops, postal outlet, health services and more can be found here, all within walking distance of each other. The neighbourhood is accessible by bus, car, foot, bike, or whatever form of transportation you prefer.

There are two employees on during Swan & Waters operating hours. They are both stationed at the tea cart. The tea cart also functions as a reception area where members scan in when arriving for a session. The two employees vary between running the tea cart, and maintaining the studio throughout the day. During slow hours, one of the two volunteers may participate in a meditation session. They are free to meditate privately during the business siesta hours.

Precedent: Juna Yoga, Montreal Quebec

I follow Juna Yoga on Facebook, after reading about one of their retreats on the lululemon blog. I run a small business online so I always investigate the online presence of businesses I think I would be interested in. Juna Yoga has a pretty good presence on Facebook. They upload images daily via instagram, and upload even information, and updates with what is new at their studio. I hadn’t been to their website until beginning studies/programming research. Their online presence is very invigorating. It does not have the appearance that some yoga studios website have that look as though they pieced together the website by themselves, using a standard website template from a mass providor. Instead, we are treated to a beautifully designed and organized site. This makes me want to spend time there even though the studio is in Montreal and I will not be visiting it, or involved with them in the near future. It is clear that they work with a professional photographer and videographer. There images have a bright, inspiring, and high quality to them. They have short films with HD footage, edited into a inspiring and uplifting piece of video art.

They also have a presence on the following sites:http://yogaalliance.org/http://www.onepercentfortheplanet.org/en/

Precedent: Yoga Public, Winnipeg, Manitoba Yoga Public advertises itsself as ‘Canada’s largest yoga playground’. Until I went inside to explore the studio, I didn’t realize the extent of what they meant by this. The square footage is huge, and the whole business spans two floors. It is significantly larger than any other yoga studio I have ever been to.Their interior design is fantastic. An imaginative arrangement of seemingly kitsch, neo-eclectic decor items are strewn throughout the lounge spaces of the studio. A variety of wall and floor treatments are both unique, and functional. The spatial adjacenies, storage, and scheduling are also very well designed and operated. Yoga Public offers mostly yoga classes, but also offers TRX bootcamps. They also hold meditation classes. I attended a split yoga/meditation class as precedent research. The experience was unique, and wonderful. After being guided through a variety of yoga postures, we took a lying-down postion on yoga mats that had already been set up for the class. Each class member rested their head on a meditation bolster, covered themselves with a light blanket, and covered their eyes with a light ‘bean pack’. After getting comfortable, the instructor guided us through a meditation invigorating our imaginations and senses. 30 minutes later he coaxed us back to reality. At the end of the class we all reflected on how the experience was for us. There was not one person who was anything less than grateful, and very, very relaxed and stress-free. These guided meditations could be an option for the Swan & Water programming and scheduling. Also, the FFE of Yoga Public are useful to study, in combination with past experienes at other yoga studios.
