    Retail merchandiser

    Merchandisers are responsible for ensuring that products appear in the right store at the

    appropriate time and in the correct quantities. This involves working closely with the buyingteams to accurately forecast trends, plan stock levels and monitor performance. While the buyerselects the lines, the merchandiser decides how much money should be spent, how many linesshould be bought and in what quantities. In smaller companies, the same person may beresponsible for both buying and merchandising.

    Merchandisers play a key role within organisations, as profitability can be affected by howsuccessfully they undertake their work. Merchandisers set prices to maximise profits and managethe performance of ranges, planning promotions and markdowns as necessary. They also overseedelivery and distribution of stock and deal with suppliers.

    Typical work activities

    Work activities vary depending upon the company and the particular retail sector, but willtypically include:

    planning product ranges and preparing sales and stock plans in conjunction with buyers; liaising with buyers, analysts, stores, suppliers and distributors; maintaining a comprehensive library of appropriate data; working closely with visual display staff and department heads to decide how goods

    should be displayed to maximise customer interest and sales;

    producing layout plans for stores; forecasting profits and sales, and optimising the sales volume and profitability ofdesignated product areas;

    planning budgets and presenting sales forecasts and figures for new ranges; controlling stock levels based on forecasts for the season; using specialist computer software, for example to handle sales statistics, produce sales

    projections and present spreadsheets and graphs; analysing every aspect of bestsellers (for example, the bestselling price points, colours or

    styles) and ensuring that bestsellers reach their full potential; monitoring slow sellers and taking action to reduce prices or set promotions as necessary; gathering information on customers reactions to products;

    analysing previous season's sales and reporting on the current season's lines; making financial presentations to senior managers; accompanying buyers on visits to manufacturers to appreciate production processes; meeting with suppliers and managing the distribution of stock, by negotiating cost prices,

    ordering stock, agreeing timescales and delivery dates, and completing the necessarypaperwork;

    identifying production and supply difficulties and dealing with any problems or delays asthey arise;

    Job description: Merchandiser

    As a merchandiser, you will be responsible for deciding which goods to stock in which shopsand how they should be displayed. In large retail companies, merchandisers you're likely to bedealing with a single range of products, while in a smaller company you may be responsible forboth the buying and merchandising.

    Essentially, merchandisers predict trends and fashions and decide which products are most likelyto appeal to customers. You'll analyse sales information, work out sales targets and plan how toincrease profits. You'll visit suppliers or manufacturers to select goods, which is likely to involveworking closely with retail buyers. You will also negotiate a price, order the goods, agree adelivery date, complete all the necessary paperwork, and keep in touch with suppliers to makesure that the goods arrive on time.

    You'll be working closely with visual display staff and department managers to decide howgoods should be displayed to best attract customers' attention. This might involve planning andsetting up sales promotions and advertising campaigns.

    You may also travel to different stores to discuss how well stock is selling, and make decisionsabout whether to withdraw, increase or move it to another store. Computers play an importantpart in the work, and are used to handle sales statistics, produce sales projections and presentspreadsheets and graphs.

    Hours and EnvironmentMerchandisers usually work a 38 hour week, Monday to Friday, but sometimes you'll workmuch longer hours, for instance during special sales promotions or the opening of a new store.

    Most of the work is office-based, but some time will be spent each week visiting regional storesor suppliers. This may involve spending short periods of time away from home. At senior levelsthis may include travelling abroad - to find new suppliers, select and buy goods, or sort outproblems with manufacturers.

    To be a successful merchandiser you will need:

    EntryEntry is competitive. Usually, you need a degree or BTEC/SQA HND in a retail, marketing or abusiness-related subject.

    Some companies may consider you with A levels/Highers or relevant vocational A level/GSVQslevel 3, if you have the right skills and qualities.

    Competition for jobs is very strong, so previous retail or business experience is very useful.

    You are likely to need a driving licence.

    Training

    Some larger retail companies recruit graduate management trainees. Here you'll work in differentdepartments, learning all aspects of retailing and store management, before specialising inmerchandising.

    It's also possible to enter merchandising via a buying or marketing role and internal promotion.This may include study for NVQs/SVQs in Procurement at levels 2 to 4; Retail Operations atlevels 2 to 4; Sales at levels 2 to 3; or Sales Management at Level 4. Other qualifications includethose offered by the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply or the Chartered Institute ofMarketing.

    Foundation and Advanced Modern Apprenticeships (MAPPs) may be available for people aged16-24. For details see: MAPPs (England); Skillseekers MAPPs (Scotland); National TraineeshipsMAPPs (Wales); and MAPPs (Northern Ireland).

    Opportunities

    Potential employers include large retail multiples such as Marks and Spencer and Tesco, togetherwith the large independent retailers found in most cities throughout the country.

    Prospects for promotion are better within the larger companies, and opportunities might includespecialising in a particular type or brand of goods, taking responsibility for the merchandising ofgoods in shops across an entire region, or moving on to other areas of retail management. Youmay have to move around the country to gain promotion.

    Opportunities also exist with manufacturers and wholesalers, mail order and internet companies.

    Annual Income

    This annual income section is intended as a guideline only.

    As a trainee or newly recruited merchandisers, you will usually earn 11,000 - 15,000.

    More experienced merchandisers earn in the region of 20,000.

    Senior merchandisers in large retail companies can earn more than 30,000.

    In garment industry, merchandiser is the BRIDGE between the management(or)industry and thebuyer.

    He have to look after every job like buying the raw material (which is requied to finish theproduct), making the garment, finishing the garment, documentation(over all view), finallyshipping.

    A garment merchandiser must have the following

    requirements:

    must be a graduate from a college degree specializing with textile and thelike.

    should have a very good communication skills as well as interpersonal skills. Having a good presentation is a plus also. A self motivated go-getter will have the edge.

    Duties and responsibilities include:

    Being a garment merchandiser, you should be capable of executing allrelated merchandising activities of the given orders or the customers.

    You should be able to handle it with care and professionally. Part of the duties is to prepare the samples and the budget and both of them

    are for approval. Coordinating as well as following with the production and fabric team is

    expected from you. Since this is a client-based business, you are expected tocommunicate with buyers.

    Constant update and interaction with the supplies is needed. You should also go check ups and follow ups with the commercial

    departments regarding the on time fabric and trims delivery. You should also make sure that the functions of all related processes are

    running smoothly. Reports daily to the administration or the corporate office regarding the

    current status and the like is also part of a garment merchandisers job. Travelling is part of this job.
