The Schmidt CombiSprayer/Spreader is a three-in-one solution. Its application

versatility enables the Safecoteproduct to be used in many formsaccording to customer preference andweather conditions.

Safecote Supamix liquid de-iceroffers a clean consistent coverage andworks to temperatures below -20°c. Ithas the ability to break-downcompacted ice and remain on thesurface for long periods.

The spread width and dosageperformance of the combi equipmentmakes it both effective and costefficient.

As market leaders, Aebi Schmidtand Safecote make it their business toidentify organisations to become‘added value partners’ workingtogether to deliver innovative andcomplete solutions.

“Bringing together the AebiSchmidt technology of the CombiSprayer/Spreader and the innovationof the Safecote additive for both solidand liquid chlorides, we undertook anumber of demonstrations to LocalAuthorities and highway servicecontractors,’ explained Aebi Schmidt, area sales manager, David Carswell.

“We provided potential users withfirst hand experience of the ease andeffectiveness of this combinedapproach,” he added.

Over a two-week period the tourtook to the highways of Stirling, Perth,Aberdeen and the Highlands. Therewere two very well attended open dayevents and two specificdemonstrations, which saw the kitbeing made available for operatortrial.

Debbie Couling, UK SalesManager at Safecote Ltd explained,“Aebi Schmidt are one of the leadingspreader manufacturers in the UK andtheir vehicles are renowned to offerthe latest technology in the winterindustry.”

“Aebi and Safecote have workedclosely together to develop a solutionto apply Safecote’s Supamix liquid de-icer at appropriate spray/dribbleconsistencies to combat lowtemperatures and ice formation onthe highway as liquids are becomingmore prominent globally.”

“The trials carried out in Scotlandduring February proved very popularand demonstrated both Aebi Schmidtand Safecote’s forward thinking stepstowards product and technologydevelopment in the winter industry.”

Gordon Sinclair, Area Managerwith Transport Scotland welcomed the

initiative by Aebi Schmidt of fitting aspray bar to a standard pre-wetspreader to provide additionalresilience at a relatively modest cost.

He noted that the modifiedspreader was equipped to carry outboth preventative treatments usingeither standard brine or in low

temperatures an alternative productsuch as Safecote and that, in severeconditions, the spray bar could beused to apply concentrated de-icers topenetrate and then undercut localareas of compacted snow or sheet ice.

The feedback has been excellent, with not only the ‘solution’ beingpraised as a viable option to keep theroads open during even the worseconditions, but also the collaborativeapproach of both Aebi Schmidt andSafecote Ltd.

The next stop of the tour couldtake them to the home of TransportResearch Laboratory (TRL), who arecurrently considering further trials andextensive testing of the ice breakingformula.

TRL are a UK independent body, responsible for the testing andcertification of a range of transportrelated services and products - this isa very positive response and may seethe output of the ‘value added’partnership’ between Aebi Schmidtand Safetcote Ltd.

The additional six SchmidtSwingo 200+ Compactsweepers were part of a tender

process involving Amey and SheffieldCity Council.

This latest success is a greatexample of the ‘team working’ ethicrunning through the Aebi Schmidtbusiness. A demonstration of howworking in consultation internally andwith their client base delivers results.

At a local level, Simon Heaton,Area Sales Manager at Aebi Schmidtexplained “Allan Macleod, mypredecessor worked with SheffieldCity Council, over many years.”

“Building up a relationship andtrust - specifying new kit and workingwith our service engineers providingcustomer support.”

“I aim to continue the good work, keeping close to the local team andensuring the equipment isperforming as expected, making surewe all deliver on our Total LifetimeCare commitment,” he added.

Amey are a major nationalservice provider, working with publicand private sector clients, supportingthem to deliver services to the publicmore effectively.

Aebi Schmidt’s, Key AccountManager, Mike Moore has beenworking with Amey, matching theright equipment solutions to fulfillservice requirements at locationsacross the UK.

“We have built up a very goodworking relationship locally withAmey Sheffield via our area salesteam and our service engineers andat a national level I have beenworking with Amey for sometime, this approach has proved a success in

Sheffield,” explained Mike Moore.“This is a two-tiered account. We

need the buyer at national level tobelieve in our product, price andservice and at local level we need toknow that the operatives on thestreets of Sheffield are receiving thetraining and service support theyneed to enable them to do their job.”

“We hope we have filled themwith a high level of confidence notonly in the Aebi Schmidt range, but inthe team that supports them.”

Damian Bell, Operations Managerat Amey in Sheffield explains “Wemanage street cleaning in Sheffieldon behalf of the city council throughthe £2 billion, 25-year Streets Aheadprogramme.”

“We took delivery in February ofsix Schmidt Swingo Sweepers as partof a £1.9 million investment we madein our street cleaning fleet. We areoperating a range of differentsweepers and will evaluate them onsafety, cleaning performance, driver

experience, fuel efficiency andmaintenance costs during the comingmonths,” he added.

“We look after 1,180 miles of roadand 2,050 miles of pavement acrossSheffield so they are already beingput through their paces across citycentre locations through toresidential streets and shoppingprecincts.”

Another vote of confidence forthe Aebi Schmidt product range andtheir TLC commitment!

“We have built upa very goodworkingrelationshiplocally with AmeySheffield via ourarea sales teamand our serviceengineers and at anational level Ihave beenworking withAmey forsometime, thisapproach hasproved a successin Sheffield,”explained MikeMoore.

“Aebi Schmidt are one of the leading spreader manufacturers in the UK and their vehicles arerenowned to offer the latest technology in the winter industry.” Debbie Couling, UK Sales Manager at Safecote Ltd

Keeping the terminal snowand ice free can be anendless task with shuttles

arriving and departing from 10separate platforms, each with fourloading and unloading ramps. Inaddition there is the network ofaccess roads designed to speedup arrivals and departures.

About 18 months ago, AebiSchmidt supplied two SchmidtTraxos series attachable spreadersto Eurotunnel for use on tractors atthe terminal; then in early 2012they took delivery of an SchmidtSNK – single bladed snowplough. So delighted were they with theperformance of the Schmidt SNKthis winter, they have orderedanother and took delivery of it atthe beginning of April.

“The Schmidt Traxosspreaders worked brilliantly for us,”said Geoff Taylor, PassengerOperations and PerformanceManager at the Eurotunnel UKTerminal. “They were easy toattach and gave operators somuch more control over thespreading process.

“The Eurotunnel Terminal ismade up of a series of tight turn

areas so we are invariablyspreading at relatively slowspeeds. If you stop the vehicle, thespreader stops, leading to lesswaste which means we get morecoverage from a full load,” headded.

“Add to that the fact you canself load without getting out of thevehicle it speeds up the wholeoperation.”

Geoff is a hands-on managerand has experienced at first handboth the Schmidt Traxos spreadersand also the challenges of snowploughing at Eurotunnel. This iswhy he chose to purchase theSchmidt SNK snow plough with

polymer blade to attach to atractor. The blade is also noncorrosive and low maintenance.

Specially designed for clearinglight snow at low levels, where itcan be wet and slushy, theSchmidt SNK is easy to operateand with the rolled over front isable to clear snow sideways in acorkscrew-style action, making iteasier for the driver.

“The Schmidt SNK is able tobe applied very close to theground and that makes clearanceso much more effective. That isnot always possible with atraditional metal plough,” addedGeoff Taylor.

“We use tractors because welike the ability to use both ploughsand brushes to keep loading andunloading ramps clear. Thisapplication fits our needsperfectly.”

The Aebi Schmidt reputation continuesto grow in Ireland, thanks to thecompany’s distributors, Irish GrassMachinery.

Although they had been involved in the Aebi side ofthe business since 1999, they took on the distributorrole in 2009 focussing initially on Schmidt Swingosweepers. When Aebi Schmidt suggested they alsotake on winter maintenance machines, initially theywere unsure.

“It had been a long time since we had experienceda really bad winter in Ireland and we were not surewinter maintenance machinery would sell easily, butwe have been pleasantly surprised at the number oftenders and delighted with our success rates,” saidManaging Director Tony Smyth.

“Gritters are planned purchases, local authoritieshave to grit irrespective of whether snow falls or notduring winter months and we have benefited,” addedTony’s brother Michael, who is Sales Director.

“To give you an idea of how this winter has beendifferent, last year gritters only went out eight times;already this year they have been out on 50 occasions!”

There has been a move towards stainless steeltruck hydraulic gritters rather than engine drivenversions as local authorities look to reducemaintenance and servicing costs. As part of AebiSchmidt’s commitment to Total Lifetime Care, IrishGrass Machinery services customers’ machines onsite, which has proved to be very popular.

The company recently completed a tender orderfor three gritters for Louth County Council but havealso had success with Dublin City Council plus Cork,Waterford, Mayo and Roscommon County Councils.

Eurotunnel fact file• The Eurotunnel railtransport system carries1.5 million trucks and 2.5million cars every year.

• Opened in 1994 theChannel Tunnel, the vitallink between the UnitedKingdom and thecontinent, has been usedby more than 300 millionpassengers.

• In 2012 almost 20 millionpassengers, on allservices, have travelledthrough the ChannelTunnel which amount to adaily average of 55,000passengers.

• There are 10 platforms atthe Eurotunnel UK Terminaleach with four loading andunloading ramps.

It’s no wonder then that over 30 UK airports(civilian, military and private) are currentlyusing Aebi Schmidt equipment, with

Heathrow and Manchester, having recentlytaken delivery, ensuring that all areas are ‘clearfor take off’.

The severe weather that the UK hasexperienced over the last few years means thatmore than ever airports need to be equippedto turn around passengers and aircraft, swiftlyand safely, maximising movements across theairport.

Heathrow Airport*Passengers: around 190,000 per day)Airlines: 86Stands: 200 (majority via air bridge)Average air movements per day: 1300Equipment:ASC 990 Stand Cleaner SweeperService/Warranty/Training: Total Lifetime Care cover

Heathrow had been operating stand-cleaning equipment from another manufacturersince 1997, with a typical lifetime of 10-15years. It was time to look at replacementoptions - so they approached Mike Moore andthe team at Aebi Schmidt. The brief was toprovide them with the ‘Schmidt’ alternative totheir current stand cleaners. Working togetherto identify and tailor practical and compatibleoptions, the end result had more benefits thanthey would realise.

Firstly, the Schmidt AS and ASC rangeuses common control box technology, thusreducing training requirements. With SchmidtCJS models already in operation at Heathrow, operatives can easily move between vehicles,

with immediate and long term productivitybenefits.

Secondly, the chosen model will provideHeathrow with a three-in-one solution. Themachine has three independent operationalfunctions, enabling the machine to stand clean, recover spillages such as aviation fuel andperform high speed sweeping. The SchmidtASC 990 can be used to perform varying tasksacross the airport, reducing the downtimecaused by an operator returning to the depotto change vehicle. In icy conditions, the samemachine becomes a four-in-one solution, performing glycol recovery from aircraft de-icing activities, reducing the impact on theenvironment.

Manchester Airport*Passengers: around 60,000 per dayAirlines: 100Stands: 42 air bridgesAverage air movements per day: around 600Equipment: Supra 4001 Snow Cutter BlowerService/Warranty/Training: Total Lifetime Care cover

All airports are required tohave operational Snow CutterBlowers. Some of thesemachines will be 20 years old,and while they still work, thepower of the machine willdecrease as will its efficiency -with the added potential ofincreased running costs. WhilstManchester geared up to purchasea fleet of Compact Jet Sweepers

(CJS, a combined sweeper, plough andblower), they also saw learnt about the Supra4001 and were so impressed they purchasedone, further enhancing their snow clearingcapability!

The Schmidt Supra 4001 Cutter Blower iscompact, durable and powerful and will takeover a critical role at Manchester, blowing awaythe ‘snow banks’ left at the side of the runwaysand taxi ways by the ploughs and snowclearers. Safety regulations at all airportsstipulate that snow banks must not be present, due to the risk of snow being sucked up intoengines on take off, landing and taxi ing. Withthe A380 airbus in operation at Manchester, the wider span of the plane requires greaterclearance of snow banks from the runwaysand taxi ways.

Manchester has also recently takendelivery of a Schmidt SK 400 Sweeper.

Whilst the buying reasons and scenariosmay differ from airport to airport, AebiSchmidt’s approach remains constant, with atotal focus on delivering the best ‘lifetime’solutions for its customers.* Sourced online from respective airport

The dynamic duo will beworking side by side, atthe forefront of Aebi

Schmidt’s Total Lifetime Careprogramme.

Chris’s careerincorporated a spell in thedesign and productiondepartment, becoming a LeadHand and then in 1990 hemoved into the engineeringteam.

He joined the fieldservice team as a FieldService Engineer, workingwith key customers across theUK. At the end of 2012 he waspromoted into the new role ofField Service Manager, where he nowmanages a number of direct reports andfield-based team leaders across the UK.

“I will be working alongside ourService Office Manager, Karen Bean andAndy Reilly under the direction of thenew Service Operations Manager JamesWright,” said Chris, explaining how hisnew role is just part of the restructureaimed at furthering the TLC commitment.

“This will mean that we each haveareas of focus. We can work closer withour respective teams, developing whatneeds to be done to reach the level ofTLC commitment we strive for.”

With the Total Lifetime Care team inplace, we look forward to watching theTLC programme go from strength tostrength.

In 1998 Andy was seconded to theheart of the design team, wherehe began to design vehiclesusing Auto CAD and 3Dmodelling, a move Andyrecognises as a highlight of hiscareer, and what proved to be atransitional role, setting a newdirection for his future with AebiSchmidt.

When the design and productiondepartment was relocated to Germany,Andy was asked to oversee the technical, support and training function. He latertook on the Technical Support Managerrole, which has led to his most recentappointment as Technical Manager.

With over 22 years experience, Andynot only understands the vehicles from adesign perspective at ground level, buthe can apply his technical skills andservice experience to the benefit of boththe internal teams and an ever-growingcustomer base.

With the newteam in place, welook forward towatching the TLCprogramme go

from strength tostrength.
