Exploring God’s Heart For the Nations: A Guide to Discovering our Unreached People Group

As we prepare to engage with the Gospel the unreached people group God has for us, it’s important that our church family has a clear understanding about people groups, God’s heart for them, and what it means to engage them. The monthly pub-lication, “Exploring God’s Heart for the Nations” is designed to help us prepare as individuals, Sunday school classes, small groups, and families. The June edition includes fun facts and recipes from the featured people group (thanks to Tanya Douglas) as well as devotional thoughts and prayer pointers. Pick up your copy to-day at the Welcome Center or look under the “Missions” tab at www.otbc.life.

You can learn more about people groups by visiting www.joshuaproject.org

Our people groups for each week in June are:

Week of June 5: Kayastha of Bangladesh (Hindu; 0.00% evangelical Christian) Week of June 12: Maranao (Lanao) of the Philippines (Muslim; 0.00% evangelical Christian) Week of June 19: Arab (Kuwait) of Kuwait (Muslim; 0.60% evangelical Christian) Week of June 26: Central Thai of Thailand (Buddhist; 0.10% evangelical Christian)

Concert of Prayer For Summer Mission Teams

Sunday, June 26 at 6:30 P.M.

The greatest mission task is carried out when we get on our knees in prayer. Join an hour of focused praise to God and intercession for our summer mission teams, and for the peo-ple with whom we will share the Gospel on Staten Island, NY and in Myanmar.

“When people work, people work. When people pray, God works”

FROM OUR PASTOR

AS I SIT AT MY COMPUTER TO WRITE THIS ARTICLE, the forecast for today is for the high temperature to be around 90 degrees. While technically we are still about three weeks from the official beginning of summer, I think it’s going to feel like summer today. Also, once we get to Memorial Day weekend on our calendar, we tend to move into a summer mindset. Family schedules change when school is out. Vacations are planned. Attitudes are just a little different in the summer.

EVEN OUR CHURCH SCHEDULE CHANGES SOMEWHAT, but we have a full summer planned with VBS later this month, camps, mission trips and all kinds of exciting things planned for our Sunday worship services. As I announced to you a couple of Sundays ago, I am beginning a summer Sunday sermon series that I am calling “Truths That Trans-form.” I have taken the title from a book written by Dr. D. James Kennedy, former pastor of the Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church in Florida. Dr. Kennedy has now gone home to be with the Lord, but he was a great spokesman for the faith dur-ing his long tenure at Coral Ridge.

THIS NEW SERIES OF STUDIES will focus on some of the great doctrines of the faith. While I recognize the chal-lenge in covering topics as deep and wide as doctrines in a Sunday morning message, I believe the challenge is worth the effort. We need to have a good understanding of what we, as believers, believe and why we believe what we believe. We will cover such topics as the doctrines of the Bible, God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, sin, salvation, election, heaven, hell and several others. I hope you will plan to be present for each study throughout the summer.

I KNOW THAT THE SUMMER AFFORDS OPPORTUNITY for vacations and some time off. I hope that you get some time to rest and refresh during the summer. I’m planning to do the same thing with my family later in the summer. However, I hope you won’t take vacation from church all summer. When you are away from here, find a church where you are and worship there. When you are in town, then we expect you to be here in worship and Bible study. Aren’t we so grateful that our God never takes a vacation from us? Let’s make sure that we remain faithful to Him this summer in our attendance, service, giving, missions and ministry!

MAY GOD BLESS YOU! SEE YOU ON SUNDAY!

MARRIAGE ENRICHMENT SEMINAR September 10-11, 2011

Led by Dr. Danny Akin

President, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary

All Senior Adults Praise our Lord Jesus Christ for the fifty years of Gospel Ministries 1961-2011. My first opportunity to serve the church was in 1961 when asked by Pastor Ted Key to conduct a revival. At that time I was serving as Pastor of Union Cross Baptist Church. In 1997 Gary Bell called to discuss my coming as the Interim Pastor. This was a very encouraging time as the church did grow. The church then called Pastor Rick Speas and I assisted him for a year. Margaret and I continued to serve as Interim Pastor in several churches and did Reach Out Evangelism in churches too. Pastor Rick called and asked that I return as the Senior Adult Pastor. This has been a very rewarding ministry for the past three years. Let us pray the future ministries of Old Town Baptist Church will be reaching the unsaved, unchurched, inactive church members and continue to share the Gospel of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ thru Home and Foreign Missions in the future. We will continue to have our Senior Adult Fellowship during the month of June in the Recreation Room at 2:00 P.M. We spend time getting acquainted, sharing prayer requests and praying. Billy Turner leads in song with his accordion. Margaret leads in games and prizes then we break for refreshments. Senior Adult Pastor Jimmy shares in a Bible Quiz and a Bible Study. Come and invite other Senior Adults, family, friends, neighbors, and strangers. The Senior Adult Picnic will be at 12:00 Noon on Thursday, June 2nd at Old Town Park. Please bring a drink and a dish to share, the meat will be provided for you. All Senior Adults are invited to come and bring others. Our Staff is always welcome. Pastor Jimmy and Margaret are helping the Advance First Baptist Church to find a Pastor. Please join us in prayer for this important ministry too. Remember Jesus Christ loves us all the time . . . We love you all too! Read John 3:15-18. If you need our ministry, please call night or day (1-336-751-3492).

Notes on Worship From Pastor Dean

Some of the most familiar words in Scripture are those contained in Jesus’ model prayer, which we know today as The Lord’s Prayer. Jesus gave us a perfect example of complete communication with God through these simple, yet deep, words. It’s only natural that these words would find their way into a musical setting eventually. It was a man named Albert Hay Malotte who took on the task of writing a musical version of The Lord’s Prayer. I was interested to learn that Malotte, in addition to writing many songs of a religious nature, also wrote many film scores. His best known film work included scores for Oscar-winning ani-mated shorts from Walt Disney Studios. But it is The Lord’s Prayer that is Malotte’s most recognized work. His practically perfect, classically-styled setting of Jesus’ words has remained a favorite since it was first written in 1935. It is so beloved, in fact, that few composers have attempted to put music to the prayer since then.

Enter Matt Maher. A young songwriter and worship leader from Arizona, Maher wrote As It Is In Heaven, giving a new generation a musical outlet to express Jesus’ words in worship. By the time you read this, we will have already introduced this new song at Awakening. I’ve sung both songs… and I love them both! There’s something special about singing Jesus’ own words to the Father as an offering of praise.

As I have said before, I am thankful for the gifts given to songwriters old and new. I thank God for men like Albert Malotte, whose music lives on even though they are now singing in Heaven’s Choir. And I thank God for men like Matt Maher, who continue to obey Scripture by singing a new song unto the Lord (Psalm 33:3, Psalm 96:1). I also thank God for my dear church family, who gathers with me before God each week to lift our songs of praise! May His name be lifted high as we worship Him together!

Cheryl Brown, Children’s Ministries Director ATTENTION: We need volunteers to help with Preschool “Summer SONdays” on Wed. evenings this summer. ATTENTION PARENTS! Summer is fast approaching which means Centri-Kid camp is drawing near. The balance of $94.00 along with the completed, notarized Participant Form (available in church office) is due on or before Sunday, June 12th. Please note: there will be a brief but VERY IMPORTANT parent information meeting on June 12th immediately following the 11:00 service in the Kingdom Kids Club. Maxine will be available at that time to notarize forms and a copier will be available to copy insurance cards. I look forward to all that God has in store for us at Centri-Kid Camp this year.

Missions on My Mind

Jesus said to them, “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I, too, am working.” (John 5:17) God, our Father, is always at work in us to transform our lives and through us to transform the lives of others. In fact, it’s God’s work that motivates and accomplishes our work. As Paul encourages the believers in Philippi, I want to encourage the believers in Old Town: Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed . . . continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose. (Philippians 2:12 – 13) Indeed, through our obedience to Jesus’ Challenge, God is working through us for the eternal benefit of thousands of people!

God is working locally through Bibles distributed by Gideons; babies lives saved and mother’s lives transformed through Salem Pregnancy Care; a second chance given by Winston-Salem Rescue Mission; a new life (physically and spiritu-ally) provided to refugees through Open Arms Refugee Ministry; a fresh start given to homeless families through Stepping Stones; spiritual and life-training given by Forsyth Prison Ministry to men about to reenter the “outside” world. These mis-sional ministries are not merely agencies to which we have given money; but, they are partners with whom we are “hands on” engaged in God’s mission. Thank you, church, for your faithful gifts to the “Acts One 8 Challenge Offering; and, even more, thank you for taking the Acts One 8 Challenge literally by engaging God’s mission locally.

God is working among local Hispanic neighbors, too. At this time, our progress on mission plans has slowed down due to the departure of our Hispanic ministry partner. For family reasons, the Riveras are headed back toward Mexico. I am disappointed by this development; but, I understand God has a plan He’s working out in His time. While Alfonso worked with us, many of us learned a lot about the Hispanic make up of our community and what it will take to share the Good News with this unreached people group living around us. While action plans have slowed down, there is still a sense of urgency to dis-cover how God wants us to join Him in making disciples of these neighbors. So, your prayers are needed now more than ever. Please join me in asking the Father to lead us in His way as we seek to obey His call to this people.

God is working in our “Judea and Samaria” (State and National) mission fields as well. First, we have invested $5,000.00 in Southern Baptist Disaster Relief ministry to meet physical and spiritual needs of people affected by the recent tornado outbreaks in North Carolina, the Southeast and Midwest. A recent Disaster Relief report indicated 307,143 meals have been served; 6,623 ministry contacts have been made with 444 Gospel presentations; and, 114 people indicating a spiritual commitment (most for salvation). Also, our “Big Apple Experiment” team is hard at work preparing to share Christ with people on Staten Island. I am expecting God to do great things through this team of 38 volunteers. Please pray for God to be glorified in Christ through this Team and our partner, Crossroads Church – one of a few evangelical churches on the island and the only Southern Baptist Church.

God is working at the “ends of the earth” (internationally), too. A team of 8 men is diligently preparing to share Christ among the Bhama people of Myanmar. This is an unreached people group of 32,000,000, a scant 0.10% of whom claim sav-ing faith in Jesus. Our team will serve July 27 – August 8. Team members are: Austin Brown, Jamie Buckley, Josh Cole, Ray Grantham, Jason Ledford, Lee Plunkett, Steve Scott and myself. Pray for our team as we prepare physically, emotion-ally and spiritually for an exciting adventure with God. Pray also for God’s Spirit to prepare the people we will meet and that He will empower Christian workers and national believers to reach this people group with the Gospel. In addition to the disci-pleship and evangelism work we have been planning, our team has been invited to visit a city to meet members of a people group needing to be engaged with the Gospel. Pray that the Father will make it clear whether or not this is the people group He plans for us to engage. Exciting things are happening. Thank you, church, for your prayers, encouragement and support in making Jesus known locally to globally!

Taking His Challenge with You, Pastor Mark

The Big Apple Experiment: A Student and Family Mission Experience

July 2 – 9, 2011

One island. A half-million people. One Southern Baptist Church. A handful of other evangelical churches. That’s Staten Island. That’s our “Samaria” mission field the 4th of July week. A team of 38 children, students and adults is preparing to share Christ through sports camp and creative community ministry partnering with Crossroads Church.

The team, the church and the unreached people of Staten Island need our prayers. Less than 3% of the Island’s residents pro-fess a saving faith in Jesus! Pray the Father prepares our team for the variety of ministry we will perform and the hearts of the people to receive His Good News for them. Team members are: Andy, Timmy and Maxine Brown; Austin, Martin and Cheryl Brown; Jamie and Ben Buckley; Clayton and Kristi Campbell; Claire Chambers; Kim and Morgan Christian; Zach Hall; Jeff, Amy, Bailey and Riley Hardin; Mark, Julie, Jacob and Alyssa Harrison; Matthew Hopcroft; Amy and Lee Jones; Jason Ledford; Jim and Debbie Lipford; Lind and Alex McCay; Molly Ring; Lesley, Jon and Christen Speas; Jeff, Tara, Caleb, Seth and Eric Yelton.

Important Dates for Team Members to Remember Sunday, June 5, 5:00 p.m. - Sports Camp Training

Sunday, June 12, 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. – Canvass-Block-party Training
