COVID-19 Response
Attendance Options - Plan B
Scholars Academy will provide two attendance options for the 2020-2021 school year.
Option 1 - Hybrid: Students have a blend of in school and virtual school attendance
Option 2 - Full Virtual: Students will remain at home and receive all instruction virtually. Students choosing Option 2 must remain as full virtual until the end of the 1st quarter. This is so we can plan classroom spaces based on maximum numbers for in school attendance.
Parents must submit their choice of attendance by August 3rd.

Health Screenings Upon arrival, anyone entering the building will be subject to temperature checks and symptom screening.
During the day, if a child or staff member begins to exhibit symptoms, they will be isolated and sent home.
If a student or staff member tests positive for COVID-19, administration will notify NC DHHS and await further instruction on notification and quarantine instructions for those who may have had close contact.
Screening Flow Chart
Symptom ScreeningQuestionnaire
Face Coverings Mandatory cloth face coverings for teachers and students when in classrooms for more than 15 minutes and social distancing is not possible
Teachers may wear face shields when giving instruction if social distance can be maintained
Mask breaks incorporated throughout the day so long as 6 foot social distance is maintained: while eating, structured PE in gym, outdoor recess
Recommend getting cloth facial coverings and having children practice wearing over the summer
Social DistancingStrict 6 foot social distancing will be enforced through:
● Limited capacity in school building and smaller class sizes● Limited class changes - teachers move to students when possible● Supervised class changes with enforced social distance - face coverings
if 6 feet can’t be maintained● Desk placement● Floor markings in hallways, restrooms, gym, reception area and
anywhere groups may congregate; one-way loop in K-4 hallway● Cafeteria: lunch periods limited to 50 students to allow for socially
distant seating● Gym: limited to 20 students to allow social distancing and movement● Outdoor Tent - inclement weather recess, outdoor lunch, outdoor
classroom, overflow for PE
Hygiene, Cleaning and SanitationHandwashing● Frequent handwashing reminders
and breaks● Hand sanitizers in each classroom
and all entrances to buildingBuilding cleaning● Frequent cleanings for high-touch
surfaces in common areas ● Cleanings between activities where
supplies are shared or during transitions for new group of students
● Daily cleanings including disinfectant spraying throughout the building
Water Fountains - only available for bottle filling
Health and Wellness Coordinator
On-site, full-time Scholars Academy COVID Response Coordinator whose main responsibility will be to comply with the school’s Health and Safety Plan and any additional requirements imposed by the North Carolina and Mecklenburg County Departments of Health and Human Services.
Staff Safety
Keeping our staff safe is vital to our ability to continue in-person instruction.
All staff will receive additional training on all new health and safety protocols prior to school start.
Staff with medical concerns will be given flexibility to teach remotely as the schedule allows.
Staff will follow the same protocols as students for screening and staying at home if exposed, symptomatic, awaiting a test result or COVID-19 diagnosis.
Parent and Student Orientation
The week of August 17th will be used for parent/student orientation.
All Hybrid students will be assigned to an orientation time slot to physically come to the school to meet teachers, pick up materials, drop off supplies and learn about school procedures.
All Full Virtual students will have an assigned Zoom meeting to meet teachers, get schedules, and learn about the virtual learning program. Drive-through pickup of school materials and Chromebook checkout on August 14th.
Additional at-home assignments will be given to students in both groups for the rest of the week of August 17th.
School supply lists will be in the newsletter and posted on the school website.

Staff will contact ALL students who are not present in person or via Zoom to verify attendance for the day.
Synchronous vs Asynchronous
For both groups’ remote days, instruction will have both components:
Synchronous: Real time live instruction with teacher/TA. Students will have a specific time to login for whole group or small group instruction.
Asynchronous: Instruction that will be placed on SeeSaw or Google classroom for students to access at their own pace. A suggested time for all asynchronous work will be provided.

● Grade level bell schedules independent from middle school to allow more flexibility for teachers to respond to the needs of students
● Recess structured to allow some free play
