Pastor’s Pondering
What’s Next?
At our March 15th meeting, the Session of
First Presbyterian Church made the difficult decision to close the
church building for two weeks in order to live out the Gospel call to
care for the most vulnerable members of our family. Now after a
little over two months, the church building remains closed, but the
ministry of our church has continued through online worship, devo-
tions, Bible study, and prayer meeting; phone calls; and the power
of prayer.
As the economy slowly reopens here in Georgia, the church,
too, is beginning its process of thinking about how we can best
reopen in a way that protects those most susceptible to the virus.
Our Session met on May 17 and came up with the following plan:
The church building will remain closed until June 30th at which
point Session will reexamine the situation and determine a
course of action.
There will be a survey sent to you (email and paper) asking you
some questions about reopening. This information will be used
to help in our planning process.
I, Pastor Burnetta, will be forming a Reopening Team to create
a phased reopening plan to be submitted and approved by
Session. When this plan is approved it will be sent to all the
members of the congregation and to the groups who use the
church, so we are on the same page concerning reopening.
The Worship Team will meet to determine when we can begin
Facebook Live filming from the sanctuary.
If you have any questions, concerns, or ideas concerning
our reopening, please do not hesitate to let me, or a member of
Session know.
In just a few months, our world has changed, and normal, as we
knew it before COVID-19, will not return. We must begin
thinking about our “new normal”—how life will be post-COVID-19.
Though there is so much we do not know about the virus, its
effects, and immediate steps, we do know one thing: God is with
us. God is present in our homes, in our community, and in our
world working all of this to the good of his creation. What a
wonderful thing to know!

Summer Sermon Series:
Genesis
The Beginning of It All This Summer, beginning on June 7, Trinity
Sunday, we will be delving into the book of
Genesis. Using the lectionary readings, we
will meet and/or reacquaint ourselves with
some of the great (and dysfunctional) families
of the Old Testament: Abraham and Sarah;
Hagar and Ishmael; Abraham and Isaac; Isaac
and Rebekah; Jacob and Esau; Jacob and the
sister wives, Rachel and Leah; and Joseph and
his brothers. We will hear stories of God’s
promises to his people; stories of sibling rivalry;
stories of visions; and stories of the hand of
God positioning leaders for ministry. The
scripture passages will challenge how we
think about the great men and women of the
Bible and in turn how we think about ourselves
and our actions toward others.
Below are the Scripture passages for each
Sunday. I encourage you to read not just the
Scriptures for Sunday, but the Scriptures and
stories that fall between the passages in the
lectionary.
June 7: Genesis 1:1-2:4a
June 14: Genesis 18:1-5 (21:1-7)
June 21: Genesis 21:8-21
June 28: Genesis 22:1-14
July 5: Genesis 24:34-38, 42-49, 58-67
July 12: Genesis 25:19-34
July 19: Genesis 28:10-19a
July 26: Genesis 29:15-28 (29-35)
August 2: Genesis 32:22-31
August 9: Genesis 37:1-4, 12-28
August 16: Genesis 45:1-15
Membership Lindalee Walters
We are pleased to welcome “new”
members to our church family . . . Doug and
Valerie Richardson! They have rejoined as
members, and while they are known to many,
we offer this information to help them be known
to all.
They were both born northerners but
moved as children to Florida, met, married, and
moved to Georgia in 1977. Doug had several
careers until in was hired as V.P. of Operations
for Thomas Lumber in Cumming where he has
worked for the past 40 years.
Valerie also had varied careers including
teacher, office manager, poll manager, Area
Manager and Lead Trainer for Hall County
elections, Girl Scout volunteer, and Mom to
two boys.
They live in
Forsyth County
and commute 35
miles one way to
church. Valerie is
an ordained Elder, loves to read, watch old
movies on TV, travel, and spending time with
granddaughters and family.
Doug loves golf, football, baseball, and
working in his yard.
Valerie says, “We have tried being away
from this Body of Christ, but we have missed
you all so much we had to come back home.
We love you!”
Welcome home, Richardsons!

On the Frontline EDITORIAL NOTE: A special thanks to our
FPC Frontline. During the pandemic, with the
church building closed and activities at a stand-
still, Judy Parsons (Judyp) and Linda Watkins
have been our Church's frontline. They have
provided support for Pastor Burnetta, Session,
Deacons and our Congregation. Thanks to both
of them for their unwavering service. Here, in
their own words, is what it's been like.
JUDY PARSONS
Things changed very quickly here at the
church office once the Shelter at Home began.
The change in noise level was dramatic. My
first day in the office after the building was
closed, I heard a banging noise down the hall
by the stairway. I had noticed the lights were
on in the sanctuary foyer, so thought perhaps
Dr. Bill was doing some renovations. I called
out “hello” and received no response. I quickly
telephoned the sheriff’s department to let them
know I thought there was an intruder. Waiting
in the parking lot, I called Judy Winski to let her
know what was up. Her reply “it’s probably the
ground hogs”. After a thorough search by two
of White County’s finest, that was the con-
clusion. Sitting next to
the preschool, I had
never before noticed
the amount of noise
those critters could
make! I’ve posted their
activity on Facebook a few times since then.
As time has passed, I’ve come to think of them
as company instead of a nuisance. Pastor
Burnetta has recommended we capture them,
baptize them and make them members. Then
maybe they’ll only come for Christmas and
Easter!
One of the first orders of business was
setting up a plan of care with the Deacons. It
was amazing to see the generous and immedi-
ate response of the Elders in offering financial
and logistical support to
make sure no one’s needs
went unserved. It took
numerous emails and
phone calls, but a plan was
developed in short order.
The next few weeks of
reduced activity allowed me
to spend a great deal of
time training on Realm, our new connectivity
app. Once I learned to focus in the silence, I
was able to complete every training course in
their system. I also compiled all the Session
notes from 2019 into a binder, and sorted the
top shelf of the supply case in the office.
For me, the biggest challenge of this para-
digm shift is the fact that there are three things
that energize me: large crowds, my grandkids,
and thrift store shopping (the thrill of the hunt).
All of this taken from me. I knew how lucky I
was, that I still had a job and could continue
with my bookkeeping business, also. So, on
top of the fact that I was feeling deflated emo-
tionally, I found myself feeling guilty for feeling
sad. Luckily I had my deacon and a very sym-
pathetic daughter-in-law who offered encour-
agement and let me see that my loss was still
a loss, even if it was not as dramatic as what
others have faced.
On some days, it was even hard to come to
work, I was simply bereft. I remember one day
in particular, where I was so down I couldn’t
even drive to work, but had my husband drop
me off. But God heard the cry of my heart, and
on that day 5 people happened to stop by the
office! My cup overflowed on that day.
There have been visitors on and off. Kim
Ciriello and I had a nice visit from opposite side
of the table stuffing envelopes with the Palm
crosses. Lindalee stopped by just last week so
we could work through some issues on the
Realm system. James Armour is always good
for a chat when he stops by to grab something
for Burnetta.
(continued on page 4)

Not too long ago, Jim
Crawford came to check out an
unfortunate odor coming from
the hallway. We concluded it was the demise
of a ground hog, and decided the increase in
ground hog activity that day was most likely a
wake for the departed.
When people do stop by, I generally stay
behind my plexiglass shield. We were ahead
of the curve on that one! On the occasions
when I come out of my shelter, you’ll see me in
my homemade mask. Can you tell I’m smiling?
I’ve been making masks at home to donate to
medical professionals. Creating something
also helps pull me out of my blues.
More and more, though, people have
stopped coming by to drop off their donations
and calling with questions. The silence is still
hard, and I have come down with what I call
coronabrain. Tasks that were simple and
routine can be very challenging. Sometimes it’s
like my brain is inside a cotton ball, things can
seem just beyond reach. Burnetta and I were
discussing how the stress of the situation just
takes a toll after a while. That’s hard to swallow
when some of my errors have been so public!
I appreciate so much the grace that FPC has
granted in my faux pas.
A few weeks ago, I was packing my lunch
when I wondered why it seemed like so much
work. Then I realized one more loss I have
suffered – free lunch! On Tuesdays I would get
leftovers from the Rotary caterers, and lately
had wonderful soup and sandwich each
Wednesday from the Bible Study class. How I
miss those meals, and the fellowship of so
many people coming in and out, some with a
nod, others who would stop and chat.
I miss all of you so. Being here with nobody
is I think harder than being stuck at home,
because here I was used to seeing people,
numerous people, every day. But I know that
On the Frontline (continued from page 3)
God is still God, the Church is still the Church,
and the people of FPC are here for me, what-
ever I need.
Blessings!
For Linda Watkins, who only works on Fridays,
it has not really been all that much different
being in the church office by herself.
LINDA WATKINS
At first I was very
paranoid and the first day
back after returning from
our trip I brought in sani-
tizer cleaner and wiped
everything. Door handles,
telephone, keyboard, keys,
desk, everything that could
be wiped. Since then
Judyp has been wiping down everything and
leaving me a note that it was done and then I
wipe down everything before I leave. We have
hand sanitizer in the office and I know I use it
very often.
The first week I wore gloves to handle the
money but after that decided just to wash my
hands or use hand sanitizer after handling any
money or mail. Speaking of money, I have
continued to go to the bank and with the Lobby
being closed, usually have to wait in line (drive-
in) for a while; one Friday the wait was 25
minutes long.
During this down time we've been working
on the Realm system and did get online giving
set up. We have a number of people using it at
this time. Like anything new, it has been a
learning process! The church also applied for
and received a PPP grant. I'm keeping detailed
records on that as the rules keep changing!
I have kept the peace lily flowers watered.
Not sure who had been doing that but they were
very thirsty so I have been checking them each
week. Really miss seeing everyone and look
forward to seeing everyone again soon.

Our regularly scheduled CT Meeting, will be
Wednesday, June 3, 11 a.m. via Zoom.
The monthly PW Bible Study, will be on
Thursday, June 11, 10 a.m., also by Zoom.
Everyone invited to attend, and we will study
Lesson Nine, “Words of Love: Thou Shalt Not
Covet” (Don’t Fixate on What you Don’t Have).
We are encouraging our members to
contribute to the White County Food Pantry
by monetary donations to help those in need
during this health crisis. Also, personal hygiene
items are being collected (basket in the upper
Narthex) for Circle of Hope. This is the
women’s sanctuary for victims of domestic
violence and abuse, and they have had an
increase in number of clients since the stay-at-
home order has been in place.
Weekly Prayer Meeting by Zoom will
continue as long as we are under a stay-at-
home order and the church building is closed.
This meeting is every Thursday at 10 a.m.
Everyone (men and women) is invited to join us
and to participate.
Point of View Jean Kelly
The Importance of Projects
When I was furloughed from work more
than seven weeks ago, I vowed to do a project
a day, every day, until I was back to my regular
schedule. Tackle things that I didn’t have time
to do or feel like doing when I was working 9 to
5, Monday thru Friday. No more excuses.
I bought a shredder. I’ve worked through a
list and right now am in the garage tackling
boxes that have been unopened since I moved
to GA more than 7 years ago. I’ve organized
my closet, cleaned the refrigerator, worked
daily on shredding old paperwork, played ball
with my dog, etc. I’m contemplating buying a
weed eater. The projects never end!
In addition to daily projects, our church
family has played a huge role in getting me
through days and weeks of the pandemic.
I’ve participated in Zoom Prayer Meetings,
online worship and Session meetings and
received numerous phone calls. I miss the
human contact and the joy of singing in the
choir.
I’m still furloughed and following the
latest guidelines. Keeping busy has helped
me stay mentally and physically acute.
Despite all this, I confess that some morn-
ings I wake up and wonder what day it is, which
really scares me. I couldn’t help thinking as I
stood in line at Walmart recently, that if I can go
to Walmart, I can go to church! Do I trust
Walmart more than I trust God and the leaders
of our church? No way.
Knowing that a church reopening plan is in
the works is great news. I’m excited. I’m ready.
Ready to not be afraid, ready to start living
normally again, ready to go back to church!
That’s my point of view.

Realm is a new
software program that
our church is using to maintain an up-to-date
membership list, attendance records, financial
giving, etc. During this pandemic our Office
Staff, as well as some committee chairs, have
been learning the ins and outs of the program.
You have probably already been asked to set
up your information which is crucial to the
current information needed on each member.
Below may answer some of your questions
regarding Realm.
Q. Why should we get into realm?
Realm has so many ways to help FPC
members:
With Realm, you will have access to a
church directory that is always up to date.
With Realm, you can register for an event,
even list what you are bringing, without
having to sign up physically at the church.
No more calling the office to see if you have
signed up, or to have your name added to
this list. You can do this any time of night or
day from your phone or computer.
With Realm, you can send a message to an
entire group of people with ease, AND that
group can be easily updated to add and/or
remove members.
With Realm, you can easily review all the
messages within a group, without having to
scroll through all your emails.
With Realm, you can check your giving
history.
These are just a few of the advantages
Realm will offer.
Q. I can’t log in, what now?
If your login attempt doesn’t work, first go to
onrealm.org again and re-try. If you stay on the
page where it says Invalid Email or Password,
nothing you enter will work. If that still doesn’t
work, simply click on the Forgot Password link
to reset your password.
Q. My husband and I share an email. How
does that affect realm?
Each login must be a unique email address,
so you need to choose which profile you will
control. You can still both be listed in the sys-
tem and receive emails from your respective
groups, but you can only view and edit one of
your profiles. If you decide to go with only one
login, please call the church so the privacy
setting for both spouses can be set to your
specifications.
If one of you has a seldom-used email that
you want to use for login purposes only, you
can still have notifications sent to your joint
email for both of you.
We understand new technology can present
a challenge, but as we grow more familiar with
the system, you’ll eventually wonder what you
ever did without it!
Elaine Wiegert
As we look forward to opening our church
and returning to our “normal” schedule, Clair
and Christy will be busy in June preparing for a
new school year at The Growing Place. Thanks
to the PPP Loan that the church received, Clair
and Christy will be working to prepare for the
upcoming school year during June. Clair will be
preparing a policy manual and Christy will be
working to prepare the classroom and taking
inventory of supplies. Check next month’s
newsletter for a list of ways we can help The
Growing Place Ministry.

Diaconate Details Kim Ciriello
It certainly has been an interesting journey
through the past few months. I must say that I
miss our old normal and I am looking forward to
returning to some sort of new normal.
I want to thank the Deacons and my church
family for checking on and praying for each
other. Now more than ever, I am so thankful for
the technology that has made it possible to
keep in contact with each other.
The church is now utilizing Realm for record
keeping, contact information .and communica-
tions. If you have not already accepted the
invitation, please look into it. We are beginning
the transition process that is taking us out of
the shelter-in-place stage and until we can be
together again in person in some fashion,
please continue to pray for and reach out to one
another. This has been a difficult time for so
many, and a simple phone call, text message,
or card can make a huge difference in
someone’s day.
New Worship Plans As we ease our way back into “normal”
worship as we remember, a modified worship
team met Thursday to discuss the upcoming
weeks. Beginning May 31, we will begin live
streaming from the sanctuary at 11:00. With
this Sunday being Pentecost, it is a good time
to let the Holy Spirit continue to lead us into the
future.
In addition to Pastor Burnetta leading the
service, we will include a liturgist along with
David and James providing the music. All will
observe social distancing but don’t look for
Pastor Burnetta or the liturgist to speak through
masks.
Tentatively Communion will begin on June 7
with more instructions to follow in preparing
yourselves at home for the elements. Hope-
fully by the end of June we will be well on our
way to attending worship on Presbyterian Hill
with certain modifications.
Approved the formation of a "Reopening
Team" to present a plan to phase in onsite
activities,
Approved the use of a survey to gauge the
desire of the congregation on reopening,
Encouraged the use of the Realm program
for "members only" information and
communication,
Prayed for several members and Roe
Calloway,
Scheduled the next meeting for June 21st.

Wow, how things have changed in the
past two months. Many people have been af-
fected by the Covid-19 pandemic, with cut back
in business which means cutbacks in employ-
ment, which means challenging times for folks
trying to just make ends meet. The White
County Food Pantry is seeing an increase in
people needing help to feed their families, and
their stockpiles are being depleted more then
ever.
So, for our Mission of the Month for June we
are once again supporting the WC Food Pantry
Nanette Baughman
to help people in our community.
Monetary donations can be
made to the church, just note
Food Panty on the donation.
Also we will be holding a Drive-In
Pantry Party at our church at the
end of the month. We hope to garner
community support for this event as well as
support from our Church Family. This will be a
fun, festive event for a great cause so stay
tuned for an exact date and details!
Stay safe . . . and wash your hands!

You all know about the various
items the Presbyterian
Women make to raise
funds for local, state,
National, and global
mission work. During this
confinement, we realized
more than ever how wonderful
it is to receive personal,
handwritten notes from
family and friends. As a
result we decided to
create note cards.
Thanks to the sub-
missions of personal
photos, we have created
multiple series of note
cards to be sold in sets of
12 cards with 12 envelopes for
$6.00 per set. These would be
ideal to use as gifts, or to use to keep in
contact using snail mail.
There are sets showing various views
of our church, local flowers, scenic views,
sunsets, old buildings, etc. The pictures
shown here are just a sampling of pictures in
each set.
We will not be able to have these printed
and ready for sale until sometime this summer.
However, if interested, please let me know what
Lindalee Walters
set(s) you would like. Check out the website
next month to see exactly what photos are in
each set.

Father's Day Facts & Trivia Come along on a sentimental journey
explaining why we honor father's across the
land this Father's Day.
The origins of Father's Day
It was while listening to a Mother's Day
sermon in 1909 that the idea of Father's Day
suddenly struck Spokane, Washington,
resident Sonora Dodd. She wanted to honor
her own father, William Smart, who was well-
deserving of a special day as a widowed farmer
left alone to raise his six kids single-handedly.
A short year later, residents embraced the
ideas so warmly that by June 19, 1910, the first
Father's Day celebration was proclaimed in
Spokane because it was the month of Dodd's
father's birth.
Decades later, the first presidential
proclamation honoring fathers was issued in
1966 when President Lyndon Johnson
designated the third Sunday in June as Father's
Day. Father's Day in America has been officially
celebrated annually since 1972 when President
Richard Nixon signed the public law that made
it permanent. Due to her efforts, Sonora Dodd
is now known as "the mother of Father's Day".
Did You Know? • Today, some of the most popular Internet
searches connected to the day include "father's
day recipes", "Father's day poems", and
"father's day crafts."
• Roses are the official flower for Father's Day.
A red rose is worn in the lapel if your father is
living, a white rose if he is deceased.
• Father's Day is celebrated most places on the
third Sunday in June, but not everywhere. In
Spain and Portugal, for instance, fathers are
honored on St. Joseph's Day on March 19. In
Australia, it's the first Sunday in September.

On-line Worship Service As we continue to
worship together via
Facebook, you will
receive the Worship
Bulletin via an email
from church so you may
participate in the Call to
Worship, prayers, etc.
When you receive the
email, print out the
Service so you may
have it with you when
you view the Sunday
Service.
You can find the
Scripture Readings for
the month of JUNE in
“Pastor’s Ponderings.”
