2018 BISHOP’S LENTEN APPEAL BEGINS! This month many of us will receive a mailing from
Bishop Burbidge regarding the 2018 Bishop’s Lenten Appeal (BLA), Living in Faith — Giving in Gratitude. After reflecting upon the many blessings God has given you, please prayerfully consider making a pledge to this important appeal that funds many
programs and ministries serving the people in our Arlington Diocese. Together, through the BLA, let us renew our personal commitment to the Lord’s work.
Our Parish Offices will be closed on Monday, January 15,
in honor of Martin Luther King Day. There will be one Mass at 9 a.m.
WELCOME TO BISHOP BURBIDGE We welcome Bishop Burbidge to our 8:30 a.m. Mass
today. He will be making a special announcement of much interest to our parish.
MARCH FOR LIFE
The 45th annual March for Life, the world’s largest annual human rights demonstration, will be held January 19 in Washington, DC. This year’s theme is “Love Saves Lives” and embodies the mission of the entire pro-life movement. I encourage you to join other St. Mary parishioners at the March as we provide faithful witness to the dignity and value of all human life, from conception to natural death. See page 5 for details on parish participation and to sign up for our chartered bus. The Vatican recently announced that Catholics attending the March (and pre-March events on January 18) may obtain a plenary indulgence by going to Confession, receiving Communion and praying for the intentions of the Holy Father. For more information, see: http://catholicherald.com/News/Local_News/Catholics_can_obtain_plenary_ indul-gences _at_March_for_Life/.
LITTLE SISTERS OF THE POOR Representatives of the Little Sisters of the Poor are speak-ing following our Masses this weekend, January 13 and January 14. Their worldwide mission is to offer the neediest elderly of every race and religion a home where they will be welcomed as Christ, cared for as family and accompanied with dignity until God calls them to Himself. A Second Collection will be made to support them. The Little Sisters have been at the heart of the ongoing legal battle by pro-life institutions seeking an exemption from the federal mandate to provide health insurance coverage for contraceptives to their employees. Thank you for your generosity in supporting their work and steadfast public witness for life.
WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY January 18-25, falling between the feast days of St. Peter and St. Paul, is the International Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. By annually observing this octave of prayer, Christians around the world seek to fulfill Christ’s prayer at the Last Supper “that they all may be one” (John 17:21).
A Prayer for Unity Lord, we humbly ask that, by your grace, the churches throughout the world may become instruments of your
peace, acting as ambassadors and agents of your healing, reconciling love among divided peoples. Amen.

SERVICE, EDUCATION & EVANGELIZATION
INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY In inclement weather (snow, ice, etc.),
St. Mary’s follows the policy of the Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS). If ACPS cancels or delays events, so do we, for the safety of our parishioners,
visitors and staff. Watch local media for news about school closings or delays for Alexandria. Also check
our parish website at www.stmaryoldtown.org.
We hope everyone had a very blessed Christmas and joy-ous New Year. We send our most sincere wishes for a grace-filled 2018 to you and yours. December 2017 was fun filled and jam packed with activities at our school. Our students enjoyed celebrating the feast day of our Lady of Guadalupe, enjoying Mexican hot chocolate and churros. Through the generosity of our school families, we raised over $5,000 for St. Vincent de Paul that provided gifts for 15 local Alexandria families this Christmas season. We also raised over $2,300 as part of We Care Catholic Schools Care about Catholic Charities week. Before we closed for break, our kindergar-ten – 3rd graders put on a fantastic Christmas concert led by our music teacher, Mrs. Nicole Luechtefeld. January brings our 24th Annual School Auction and Gala on the evening of January 27 at Mt. Vernon Country Club. For additional information and to purchase tickets, please visit www.smsva.org. This is a wonderful event to help support our school and enjoy time with friends. There is also a raffle to win free tuition for one year. See the website for details. We look forward to seeing you there!

YOUR ST. VINCENT de PAUL SOCIETY & 2018 At our January meeting, after a spiritual reflection on the blessings bestowed on us in our work by our patroness, Immaculate Mary, we affirmed as our priority for 2018 the same as 2017: Keeping families in their homes, whether by providing emergency assistance to avoid eviction, prevent-ing electricity, gas or water from being disconnected, or through our Sustainment Fund to put a family on a secure path to self-sufficiency. At the close of our meeting, we prayed for the intentions of our benefactors, asking Our La-dy to bestow blessings on them and their loved ones. Your support in 2017 helped hundreds of our neighbors. Your support this year, as a volunteer or benefactor, will help families in need to move toward “the quiet miracle of a nor-mal life. For additional information, contact Jim Larocco at [email protected].
