MISSION STATEMENT We are a community of believers, proclaiming that Jesus is Lord. We come together as Catholics to celebrate the Sacraments, especially the Eucharist, to hear and be transformed by the Word of God, to bring Christian values and love into our world, and to live and share the teachings of Jesus. LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR Rev. Patrick G. Cecil Dear Friends,

Father Pat was on retreat when this was due. Today begins the “Bread of Life” discourse in John’s Gospel. Over the next five Sundays, we will hear stories of the importance of nourishment and come to discover that Jesus is the true nourishment we seek. In today’s Gospel we find Jesus has crossed the Sea of Galilee, gone up a mountain and found that thousands of people have followed him there. He desires to feed them but is only presented with a boy’s supply of five barley loaves and two fish. After instructing the disciples to have the people recline, Jesus takes the loaves, gives thanks and begins distributing it to the people himself. There was enough for everyone. So there would be no waste, Jesus had his disciples gather the leftovers. They filled twelve baskets indicating the abundance. We are reminded of God’s abundance each time we celebrate the Eucharist together. Jesus truly is the Bread of Life. On another note, summer is racing past us and we feel the uncomfortable need to grab it and make it last. Sure, it was a rough start, but now we really need its presence. Summer, relaxa-tion, enjoyment of nature, lightening bugs, bees, butterflies, longer days, great sunsets, foun-tains galore with refreshing spray, fireflies, picnics, watermelon, flip flops, we love it all!

But, summer travels away quickly and fall is ushered all too soon into our lives It happens and all we can do is say good-bye and celebrate once more the new season of fall. But before we let summer go, let’s celebrate! And so we shall at the Parish Picnic scheduled for August 23rd. We are changing our weekend Mass schedule for August 23rd. Rather than cele-brate both a 10:30 and Noon mass we shall do something a bit different and celebrate Mass at 11:00 for everyone to attend before our Parish Picnic at 12:00. That means that all planning to attend the 10:30 Mass get an extra half hour to prepare and those planning to attend the 12:00 Mass need to adjust their Mass time. We can do this and we can do this with grace and love. We plan to have the 11:00 Mass be a family Mass with families doing the readings, bringing up the gifts and greeting before Mass. All families are included: families with children, families without children, single people, widowed people - everyone. Won’t that be great! OK, how would it be to celebrate our picnic in the park? More shade, more space, better accommodations for games. Hard to beat! All agreed that this might be the best of ideas. So, get out your folding chairs, your sun screen, your bug repellent and plan on joining the fun.

Let’s all agree to have a wonderful time together!

Baptism Preparation Program

This program takes place on a Tuesday at 7:15 pm. It is for all parents who wish to have their children bap-tized. The next meeting dates are :

August 11, September 8, October 13, November 10 and December 8.

Maryville Crisis Nursery Wish List

We are beginning a new initiative at the Nursery this month. We are promoting healthy, balanced meals, as well as meal time as “family time”. Our hope is to send families home with a “Pasta Dinner in a Bag”.

TRANSFORMATION

HOLY ORDERS

The sacrament of Holy Orders – the ordina on to the priesthood – is signi cant not only to those being ordained but certainly to each of us as well. Through their voca ons we are shepherded through every phase of our Catholic lives. As the sacrament of Con rma on confers the blessings of the Holy Spirit, so the sacrament of Holy Orders confers to the priests a special rela onship with the Holy Spirit. We have all seen photos of each year’s ordina on “class,” and the bishop’s “laying on of the hands.” This outward sign of the sacrament demonstrates the conference of the sacramental grace. We are most familiar with the diocesan priests ordained to serve under a bishop in his area or diocese. There are also many others ordained to serve through a par cular religious order, such as Carmelites, Franciscans, St. Patrick’s Fathers, and various missionary groups. Each group makes speci c vows, such as obedience and chas ty. Many of the religious orders also make a vow of poverty and the contempla ve orders commit to silence. These are varia ons in the ceremonial rites, but the sacrament is always the same: “Do this in remembrance of me.” The following prayer summarizes many facets of our priests while asking for protec on and blessings for them. It says much of what we might consider about the Sacrament of Holy Orders. Father Cecil, Father Headley, Father Klees and Father O’Boyle are commi ed, suppor ve and caring to the Faith Community of St. Mary of the Woods. Keep them in mind as you say this prayer.

O Jesus, I implore Your divine assistance for Your faithful and fervent priests; for Your unfaithful and tepid priests;

for Your priests laboring at home or abroad in distant mission elds;

for Your lonely and desolate priests; for Your young priests;

for Your dying priests; for the souls of Your priests in purgatory.

But above all, I commend to You the priests dearest to me; the priest who bap zed me;

the priests who absolve me from my sins; the priests at whose Masses I assist and who

give me your Body and Blood in Holy Communion;

the priests who teach and instruct me; all the priests to whom I am indebted in any

other way. O Jesus, keep them all close to Your Sacred Heart, and bless them abundantly in me and eternity.

Amen.


Next Weeks’ Alms Collection is for Marillac House

Located on Chicago’s west wide, Marillac House has a mission of providing quality service to those in need, to advocate for the voiceless, to be a witness in the communi-ty, to strengthen family life, and to work toward a more just and safe society. Supported and staffed by the Daugh-ters of Charity, they run a variety of social service and community outreach programs to achieve its mission There is a day care program that gives children a safe, structured environment while enabling parents to work. Marillac House also offers an extensive child abuse pro-gram that emphasizes prevention as well as providing care and counseling services to children who have been abused. Through Project Hope, young teenagers are counseled, provided educational and social opportunities to build self esteem and help prevent the recurring cycle of pregnancy and poverty. They also offer a wide range of adult ser-vices, including a breakfast program, adult education, el-derly outreach, and supportive services for men. These include “straight Up,” a collaborative effort among several programs to instill young males with self-sufficiency, re-sponsibility, self esteem and to help prevent crime and vio-lence.

SMOW Thursday Night Supper Club Dates Take this opportunity to help out people in need.

Please sign up to provide dessert for 100 (ex. 100 cookies), deliver food and serve the Thursday Night Suppers at the Catholic Charities in Des Plaines. SMOW has been providing a well-balanced meal to those in need, once a month, for several years. We serve an average of 100-120 people. A combination of Homeless, Fixed income, Single mothers/low income families with children all different nationalities and religions. There is never any food left over and everyone is so grateful for the generous donation and the interaction of the families/children serving the meals. Please help us give back!

The Well of Mercy, located at 6339 N. Fairfield, is a supportive long- term facility for single and pregnant mothers and their children. Coupons for this event are in the vestibule. Paper coupons must be presented at time of purchase. Take-home items also are eligible for this special offer.

CHURCH EXITS It’s often good to remind ourselves of the exits in any building so we know how to proceed if an emergency arises. With that in mind, let’s consider our church. Most of us know the four double door exits that lead into the Narthex. They are numbered 1 through 4 on the drawing below. The exit marked number 5 below is in the corner by the choir. It leads out on the Sioux side of the Church directly across from the Rectory entrance. Exit number 6 is accessed from the sacristy and leads out behind the Rectory Garage. Exit 7 is on the parking lot side of the church in the far south corner. It leads out to the parking lot. The exit marked 8 does not lead directly outside but into the Rectory. All of our exits are marked with exit signs. Take a few moments to familiarize yourself with them so if there is ever an emergency, you would know how to exit the building safely.
