Chapter 1 Union/Confederacy
• United States was divided into the Union (North) and the Confederacy (South).
• Union had a larger army and or supplies/factories than the Confederacy.
• Confederacy ultimately surrendered to the Union.
Chapter 2 Sherman’s March to the Sea
• In September of 1864 General Sherman captured Atlanta and proceed to march towards the Atlantic Ocean.
• After Sherman had taken the port city of Savannah, Georgia, he went north and marched through the Carolinas.
• On their way they looted houses, killed livestock, and burned fields.
Chapter 3 Diseases during the Civil War
• Doctors did not know how to treat many diseases.
• Soldiers would often bathe in the same source of water that they drank from leading to the spread of disease.
• Battlefield surgeons were not to most sanitary and often helped cause infections without realizing it.
Chapter 4 Robert E. Lee
• General of the Confederate Army.
• In 1861, President Lincoln invited Lee to take command of the entire Union army. Lee declined, asserting that since Virginia (his home state) had seceded he would go with it.
• Lee's greatest victories were the Seven Days Battles, the Second Battle of Bull Run, the Battle of Fredericksburg, and the Battle of Chancellorsville.
Chapter 5 Federalism
• The division of power between federal and state governments.
• Reserved Powers - Any power not given to the federal government goes to the states and the people.
• Concurrent Powers - Powers that the federal government and the state governments can independently exercise at the same time.
