Fach SeesGrowth in Gross

Charlie Fach, head of theSmash -Fontana labels in Chi-cago, has predicted that grosssales in 1965 could easily dou-ble the $3 million grossed in1964. Contributing to his optim-ism is the tremendous successof five -time winner of theGrammy Awards, Roger Miller, whose "King of the Road,"'Engine Engine No. 9" singlesand album sales have alreadystarted the year off with heavygrosses.

Other acts on the labels, which are racking up heavysales this year are Wayne Fon-tana and the Mindbenders,James Brown and GloriaLynne. Fach recently flew toTexas to confirm a deal withMaj. Bill Smith and GeneHenslee to purchase the master'If You Really Want Me To,I'll Go," by the Ron-Dels, nowon the Smash label.

Dig Groovy, Shaggy West Coasters

GO SEE THE BOSS. Well, daddy, I mean like if you're gonnaget ahead on this scene, you go right to the boss cat, like BobDylan, and you tell him he's what's happening. Then maybesome of the good stuff will rub off on you . . .

O.K., so it's hip to dig Dylan right now. Man, it's so in. All yougotta do is ask those cats like Donovan or the Beatles, and they'lltell you who's the chief around those folk parts. I mean, there'sBobby baby right now, sittin' on top of the English charts, withsomething like three albums in their top twenty.

Then there's that cat with the Irish name, calls himself Dono-van. Well, he's flipped over Dylan, even if the Rolling Stonessay he's not too straight over the cat's music.

Pretty natural then that in America we should have someonesinging Dylan besides Bob, and it's some kinda groovy that heshould give his seal of approval to The Byrds, who are soaringway up high daddy with "Mr Tambourine Man", which the chiefwrote.

THE CHIEF APPROVES. Dylan digs the Byrds too. Straightman, no foolin'. When they were appearing at Ciro's in Holly-wood, Bobby boy just stepped straight on stage and performedwith them. Isn't that just too wild?

And the cat even went to their recording session. Boy, thatmust have swung. There they were, doin' "Mr. TambourineMan", for Columbia which they got off a Dylan album, and thenthe master appeared. Like everyone cheered and said "how

great", and then Bob said he liked The Byrds version of "Tam-bourine Man", and all the people were happy.

Terry Melcher produced the session. He's a talented cat-DorisDay's son. That isn't his claim to glory. Before he recorded theByrds, he was a member of the Rip Chords, and also producedsome good stuff for other artists. But he's right in their groove.

TEN GROOVY MONTHS. There are five Byrds, and they playthirteen instruments between them. They sing too. They areMike Clarke, David Crosby, Jim McGuinn, Chris Hillman andGene Clark (no relation to Mike). They've been together aboutten months now, and formed the group in Los Angeles, eventhough Dave and Chris are the only two that come from there.

They come from all kinds of musical backgrounds. Forinstance, leader Jim McGuinn used to work with the Chad Mit-chell Trio, and Bobby Darin. He plays lead 12 string guitar. Healso plays banjo and sings bass vocal.

Gene Clark was a member of the New Christy Minstrels forabout a year. He's the outfit's tambourine man. But he playsguitar and harmonica too, and of course, he sings.

David Crosby was a folk singer, Chris Hillman had his ownBluegrass group, and drummer Mike Clark used to play rockand roll.

SWINGING TOGETHER. They came together from differentstratas, but musically, they swing together, like they all grew upin the same neighborhood and had the same music teacher.

The Byrds reckon "Mr. Tambourine Man" is a cross betweenfolk and rock. They figure music trends are heading in that di-rection anyway . . . sort of like an American Rolling Stones, whom they joined on a West Coast tour in May. Only their musicis different-a little.

They've got long hair too. Chris Hillman's is curly, so it doesn'tgo into long flat bangs in front like the others. Their faces havea mean, sardonic look, which is kind of fashionable at themoment, and they dress in silk suits with velvet collars.

They don't look too old. David Crosby is the oldest . . . he's24. Baby Mike Clarke got to reach 21 this month.

THE ROOM THAT JUMPED. Man, that room at Ciro's wasjumpin' when the Dylan cat came down for a cosy scene withthe Byrds. They had a seven day stint, but the guys that ran theplace said the crowds were comin' in like they were leavin' thecountry tomorrow, so he kept them on for a whole month.

When they split Ciro's, everybody wanted to know about thisgroup, so they got a whole load of wild bookings, from theTroubadour Club in L.A. to the Peppermint Tree in San Fran-cisco. Understanding cats, those people from the Golden Gatetown . . . they gave the Byrds four days off to make it to theEast Coast and tape a final "Hullabaloo' show. That's where theysang "Mr. Tambourine Man", and everyone screamed andcheered, and the record took off like a missile in orbit.

After that, the Byrds went on a West Coast tour with theRolling Stones, and now they're going out on the road for a coupleof dates with those other British guys, Chad Stuart and JeremyClyde.

And, wow! there has to be time to complete their new album.Hey, Byrds . . . what's the personal facts scene with you? I

mean, like you gotta have some pretty offbeat things happening.WHAT'S HAPPENING. Mike Clark's hobby is to hang around

and see where it's at. He says the biggest influence in his careerwas the day he saw R & B groups grow their hair long . . . hedoesn't dig that barber shop scene too much and flips over tallgirls with long hair.

David Crosby's groove runs from Miles Davis to the Beatles. He's kinda hung on the Indian music bit. He likes life, love.freedom, awareness, music, sex and sailing, and got his biggestkick from standing watch at night, alone sailing.

Jim McQuinn has this thing about Bernstein and Phil Spector. He's kinky for being the good soul and to have his own jet, which would go 'whoosh' in the sky. His personal ambition-onthe level-is to play good jazz guitar, go into TV, direct moviesand have his own electronics lab.

Chris Hillman was a genuine comboy. He digs everything inmusic, especially Muddy Waters and Mose Allison, but splitsfrom the TV and newspaper groove. He just wants to be happy, man. That's all.

Gene Clark is big on the animals bit. The real thing. He figureswet water is his favorite drink, and he's crazy about "Strawberry"tastes in music, but not about bugs. He's not too sure, but hethinks his personal ambition is to be a human being . . .

That's The Byrds, baby, . . . dig? JUNE HARRIS

PetulaPlans

AheadSummer on Continent;Autumn U. S. tour forCopa, Sullivan TV and re-citals planned; Sees mu-sical comedy on futureagenda.

A GO AT THE STAGE. Diminutive Pe-tula Clark, now that she's managed toconquer the record end of showbusinesswould like to keep right on conquering-first the night clubs, where she does herAmerican debut next October at NewYork's Copacabana, and later ("how muchlater I don't just know") she'd like totake a good whack at the musical comedystage.

"David Blatz, who runs Tony Hatch'spublishing company, has been here recent-ly, to screen possible show ideas for mewith the American publisher, Howie Rich-mond," Petula confided during a luncheonlast week with such Warner Brothersexecutives as a. & r. man, Joe Smith, NewYork office chief, George Lee, and easternpromotion head, Marvin Deane.

"I'd love to do a show if we can findthe right thing. David, who works closelywith Tony Hatch, who wrote and produced`Downtown,' has been going through quitea few things, but the idea has to be right. Then I'd like to open the show in Londonfirst, and bring it to America later. Butthat's a long way off probably; there areso many things planned already."

HOME IN THE HILLS. The summerplans include some time off in a cozycountry home nestled in the hills of south-ern France, which Petula shares with hus-band, Claude Wolff, an attractive youngFrenchman, and their two little daughters."It's not on the Sea, because it's not thateasy to get very close to the water," saidPetula, after ordering her dessert of aroyal banana split, "But we're close tothe water, about seven kilometers maybeand we have our own swimming pool.

"But I'll be working a good part of thetime, in France, where I've lived for quitea few years now, and in Belgium and Eng-land. Next fall, when we come to NewYork, I'll bring our little girls with meand we'll take an apartment, and I

8

imagine we'll do the same thing in Renowhen we go there for November. I expectto do some recitals in a few cities toowhile I'm here."

Petula, who had just shared top EdSullivan billing the night before with suchluminaries of the world of the dance a3Nureyev and Fonteyn, will include Mr.Sullivan in her fall plans, whilst makingher Copa scene. "I've never really playednight clubs before, she continued, "AndI'm not sure what it's going to be like.I suppose I should be preparing an act butmy schedule is literally so full that I'msimply not sure where the time will comefrom.

GOES OWN WAY. "I had thought ofgetting Leslie Bricusse to work on ma-terial for me, but I don't know how muchthat would mean either. When I get outon a floor, I'm likely to forget everythingspecial I've worked on and I just go myown way, just sing, that's all!"

Petula Clark, now makes her home inParis. "I've lived there for quite awhile,"she said, "and I can remember seeing TonyNewley there often, when he and I wereprodigies together and neither of us hadever made it big."

But she has always done her recordingin England. Oddly enough, though Eng-land is the site of her discing efforts, herhits for several years were limited prettymuch to those French -language thingsdestined for the Gallic trade-until TonyHatch came along last year with a greatsong and a new sound idea.

"The song was Downtown' and Tonyalso did 'I Know a Place,' for me. Whatgreat material. And do you know I'verecorded 'Downtown' in French, Germanand Italian as well? In Italian, the title is`Ciao Ciao' and the lyric is not a transla-tion but the melody and feeling are thesame."

OGERMAN PLANS. Petula believesdeeply in the talent of Tony Hatch. Shealso looks upon Burt Bacharach as a con-tributor. "He's done a great job makinga new sound for records, and so hasClaus Ogerman. I'm very excited aboutworking with Claus sometime later thisyear. We want him to do some arrange-ments for a new album I hope to re-cord, either in London late in thesummer or possibly here in Americanext fall. We've already discussed someideas with him here and we'll talk againin London in a couple of months."

As to the British disc scene in general,Petula likes the Beatles, the "sound" of theRolling Stones ("as long as I don't haveto watch them") Sandie Shaw and CillaBlack. "Sandie Shaw is a great youngsinger with a real sound I think. And Ilike Cilia Black although she's rather un-sophisticated," Petula observed, between acouple of bites of her strawberry bananasplit. "But this thing of the Britishdominating in America, I think that's allgoing to get sorted out. It's already hap-pening in England with quite a few Amer-icans coming back to their charts. It willhappen the same way in America too."

Ronnie Dove Bucks TrendVirginia singer dropped the rock and got four

straight hits with Nashville ballad soundBALLAD MAKES IT. Considering theclimate of the record business in 1964, theemergence of Ronnie Dove as a new discstar is doubly impressive.

It was a great year if you were British,top-drawer producers of the West Coastor Detroit sounds, or a nationally estab-lished artist before the invasion. But whowould guess that a country -bred balladeerwhose professional exposure had beenmainly limited to the Baltimore area couldcome into prominence with an appealing, understated ballad like "Say You?" Cer-tainly Ronnie never expected his recordto do for him what it did. On the otherhand, his producers did.

Currently headlining at the fashionableLong Island club, San Su San, Ronnieopened up for us about his budding prom-inence. "The irony of 'Say You' makingit, is that I always did rock 'n roll songsup tempo. And my first big hit is a ballad. The others have all been ballads too, sothere you are."

Actually, Ronnie's first release on Dia-mond records was up -tempo - "SweeterThan Sugar," but as he explained "SayYou" was the really big record. After"Say You," Ronnie followed up with"Right or Wrong," "One Kiss For OldTimes Sake" and his current release, "ALittle Bit of Heaven," released just lastweek, jumped on the MB chart at 77. He'shad a perfect track record to date.CUTS IN NASHVILLE. Ronnie, who wasborn in a small Virginia town (Herndon)now makes his home in Baltimore. Whilein the Coast Guard, some six years ago,he formed his first performing group. After the service, he began working inclubs, mainly in the Baltimore area. Itwas here that he came to the attentionof John "Reds" O'Donahue who broughthim to Phil Kahl of Diamond Records(Kahl and O'Donahue are Dove's mana-gers now). "We cut all our sides in Nash -

10

ville," explained Dove, "and what a placeto work. You know, the atmosphere thereis so good for working. No hassle. Noscreamin' and hollerin'. And, of course, the musicians are so great. I've sincegiven up my group, except for JohnnyGillespie who travels with me as my con-ductor and lead guitar man."

Ever since his first hit, Ronnie has beenbusily engaged on the road. While he'sworked with most of the big names inthe business, his favorites remain ElvisPresley, Little Anthony and Bobby Vin-ton. His engagement at the New YorkParamount last fall earned him a returnrun there this Easter time, and followinghis Long Island engagement Ronnie hasa busy schedule which is filled throughSeptember. He will, among other things, join the Shindig touring company for twoweeks, film four Dick Clark TV showsthis summer and travel with the Clarktour for eight weeks.

TOO LITTLE TIME. "I won't have toomuch time to record between now andthen, but we have some things in thecan. I'm anxious about my second albumwhich comes out in about two weeks("One Kiss For Old Times Sake").

"You know, I've always wanted to bea performer, and it's so gratifying thatnow I really earn a good living at whatI really love to do. There are a lot ofother things I want to do too, but maybethey'll come with time. One very strongambition of mine is to someday own myown nightclub. I'd like to have a clubwhere new talent could be exposed tothe public. Recordings are wonderfulthings for a career, but a performer hasto do just that-perform. Working for anaudience is most important in develop-ing. That's why I hope to have such aclub someday, probably in my adoptedhome, Baltimore."

TALENT BEAT

Eyes Have Itby Barry MIMeson

If in watching Shindig lastweek you couldn't locateCarole Shelyne, the be-spectacled feature dancer, don't worry over your eye-sight. Carole wasn't on lastweek. Instead, she spent theweek on the road, promotingher first single for Liberty,"The Girl with the HornedRim Glasses," and her activitiesbrought her to New York, which to Carole was some-thing of a homecoming.

"My family moved to theCoast from Brooklyn about 10years ago, and now I only getback on rare occasions." (Hereshe did a modified slop with ajerk finish, rolled her eyesheavenwards and continued)."I never imagined I'd get anyspecial attention out of Shin-dig, but here I am. You knowmy ambition is to be in musicalcomedy-legit." (Again, theeyes rolled, the hips swayed, there was a bit of a turn, andshe spotted dead center).

In response to whether acareer in the legit musicaltheater wouldn't best developin New York, she replied:"There are two ways to getinto the Broadway scene. Oneis to start as a chorus dancerin New York, and take thechance that you'll still bedancing in shows thirty yearsfrom now. The other way isto go to Hollywood, get eithera television or film reputationand then come to Broadway asa star. The latter is more rea-sonable. Besides, failure is somuch easier to cope with onthe Coast.

"In New York you're sur-rounded by failure and asteady diet of sour grapes.Everybody takes himself soseriously. On the Coast, youdon't get a job, so you go to

the beach, and the next daylook again."

Since Shindig, Carole's lifehas changed more than shehad anticipated. "When I gotthe job, I thought, 'are youkidding-five weeks and theshow will fold'-but thankheavens I was wrong. It'srough work-we put in forty'hours between Sunday andThursday night when we tape. And believe me you have tomove fast. With three camerasscooting about and a largecrane it's a wonder we're notrun over more often. One dayI stepped off a set, turnedaround and wham!, I waslevelled. Just before I passedout my last thought was, great, tomorrow I'll own ABC-TV'right? Well, I wasn't hurt. What a drag."

As if to demonstrate herstate of good health, Carolemade with the monkey, rolledthose 20/20 eyes again, andwhispered: "Anything else Ican tell you about? If anyoneasks, tell them I'm not a dayover thirty-five."

One more take: a frug, andshe was gone. Back to theCoast for a wedding of one ofher fellow dancers on Satur-day night, and, of course, aSunday morning rehearsal call.

CERULEAN BLUES

The Big Fellowby Dom Cerulli

Erroll Garner, the AmericanTel & Tel of jazz, has setup his communications centerat Art D'Lugoff's Village Gate, and that makes news of severalsorts.

For D'Lugoff, it marks theemergence of his club as themajor jazz spot in Manhattan, now that midtown's BasinStreet East and Birdland havegone go-go. There are otherdowntown and Village jazzclubs, to be sure, but noneyet has the space or the nameattractions that D'Lugoff com-mands.

For Garner, it is his firstNew York appearance in fouryears. And, I must add, it isa personal triumph.

For the rest of us, the listen-ers, the jazz buffs, the tourists, the whatevers, it is a ball.. .

a big, bouncing ball. For Garner is incredible. He

is a one-man band. There aretimes when he sounds as ifhe had been orchestrated byFletcher Henderson. He playsentire arrangements, nowusing both hands to blow theensembles, now using onefinger to run a solo line. Heplays in two tempi at the sametime. He buzzes through keysuntil even bassist Eddie Cal-hoon is bug-eyed.

And he plays the piano, thewhole piano, and everythingabout the piano like nobodyelse is doing these days.

Garner's opening set ranwell over an hour, and he wasbrought back for four encoresby a standing, stomping, screaming crowd that wouldhave kept him there at thekeyboard all night. But it waslate, and the lines had alreadyformed from the entrance tothe room all the way up thestairs and out to the street.Besides, Garner had earnedhis rest.

The elfish pianist had onceagain mixed the tension andrelease of jazz with the witand humor of his brand ofshowmanship, tossed in a solidmeasure of technique and dar-ing, and had won his audience.

He played What's New,Moon River, a lovely and bil-lowing Stella By Starlight,Sonny Boy (the look on bassistCalhoon's face as Garnerswung into this tune after anintroduction that couldn't be

!believed even after it washeard, was hysterically funny),My Funny Valentine, andmore and more.

High spot of the eveningfor this reviewer was a LatinAmerican tune Garner took atrocketing tempo. He went intoa coda at the end, and wascooking so well that he taggeda coda onto the coda. Youstill with me? Good! At this

point, he went into some old-fashioned, two-handed, honest -to -Heaven stride piano thatbrought quite a few of us toour feet with a roar. Therejust isn't anybody around play-ing piano that way in publicanymore.

But . . . enough of that. Itwas a grand night of jazz andI left the club humming themusic, the breaks, the cheers, the waiters, the drinks. . . .

There is this thing aboutGarner: he leaves his audiencesatisfied-and happy. I was abetter person when I left. Ihad been delighted musicallyby the wit of the man. I hadbeen moved by his ability

and his art. I had dug theway he got up and bowed tohis audience after every num-ber (it seems that most enter-tainers today don't know howto acknowledge applause. Afew, among them Garner, doit gracefully).

Singer Leon Bibb openedthe evening with a fine slateof songs, sung well and withringing clarity.

But when Garner's in thehouse, he dominates the even-ing. For a guy who stands fivefeet two, he is, as they usedto say of the great ones not toolong ago, very tall. . . . verytall.

Welcome home, Erroll.

If it's possibleto fall in lovewith an album, watch yourselfaround these two!
