Concise entries describe the ingredient's source, basic chemical properties, functions, and various uses. Coverage includes natural and artificial ingredients as well as those used in food processing. Aside from updating entries, the fifth edition has a new section tided "Food Definitions and Formulations," an expanded list of ingredients approved by the European Union, and an extensive bibliography. Those looking for health benefits, drug interactions, or toxicities will not find these topics here, with the exception of a list of ingredients in the category Generally Regarded as Safe (GRAS) from the FDA. Toxicology data is available in the Dictionmyof Food Compounds with CD-ROM: Additives, Flavors, and Ingredients, edited by Shmuel Yannai (CH, May'04, 41-5012), which focllses on the chemistry and physical properties of ingredients. [Visited Sep'll) ToxCastDB provides public access ro data gathered by the ToxCast project that screens chemicals for potential human toxicity using more than 500 high-throughput screening bioassays from nine bioassay vendors. ToxCast is part of the EPNs National Center for Computational Toxicology. As the Basic Info link states, ToxCast links "biological, metabolic and cellular pathway data ro gene and in vitro assay data for the chemicals screened." At the time of this review, 300 chemicals had been screened, with another 700 projected by the end of2012. The database also includes data from the ToxRefscreening program, which screens chemicals for toxicity to animals. On loxCastDB's opening page, users may search chemicals by name or CAS registry number; these options should become more useful as the list grows longer. For now, it is relatively easy to use the Chemical List link to browse the roughly alphabetical list or to use the browser's "find" function.

The Data Collection Link shows the bioassay vendors with the number of assays used and chemicals screened, along with links ro more specific assay information. Although the Genes Associated with Assays link was slow to open on several occasions, it offers a description of the gene, species (most often Homo sapiens), gene symbol, and assay name. Clicking on the gene symbol sends users ro the NCB!'s genespecific and mapped phenotypes site Gene. Clicking on the assay name sends users ro the specifications of the assay and list of other chemicals screened with that assay (within ToxCast DB). The Help link read "not yet implemented." The value of this database should increase as the list of chemicals screened grows. It points to related financial topics for each, e.g., saving for education, financial aid, travel, incorporating a business, and taxes. The site is not intended to provide or recommend specific financial actions, so users should approach it accordingly. A useful Ask the Money Doctor feature provides the opportunity to read through user-submitted questions that have been answered by volunteers who are certified Personal Financial Specialists. Users may submit questions and vote to

This ambitious volume seeks to document the contributions of women's and gender studies and to promote appreciation for this interdisciplinary endeavor both in academia and in the larger society. Berger (UNC, Chapel Hill) and Radeloff (College of Southern Nevada), both sociologists by training, address three major issues: the meaning and value of the field, how to maximize students' involvement in their education, and postgraduation career paths. In the process, they surveyed more than 900 graduates in the field from 125 institutions, creating the largest extant database on women's and gender studies graduates. The book features a brief, detailed [able of contents and an appendix of research methodologies. The text includes boxed quotations from informants, sidebars highlighting contributions of luminaries in the field (e.g., Audre Lorde), suggested items for one's library, and a list of exercises at [he end of various sections.

The authors aim to empower students and faculty to understand the utility of the field and how to communicate effectively about it to all kinds of people, particularly family members. The authors pose personal questions for reflection with the aim of enabling readers to speak about women's and gender studies in their own terms; they will not find quick lists of talking points in the text. Chapters cover such topics as talking about the field, discovering and claiming personal strengths and skills, and serving as an agent of change for a more equitable society. 'This book is suitable as a course textbook and indispensable for women's and gender studies programs. It is a necessary acquisition for academic libraries.

Edited by Mikaberidze (Louisiana State), this ambitious, two-volume

resource highlights military/political conflict fi'om a Middle Eastern

perspective. Alrhough not comprehensive, it features approximately 625 entries, a detailed chronology, a glossary, and extensive bibliographies.

Entries offer introductory material on a topic rather than in-depth discussion. This set provides little biographical information about

individuals beyond their role in military endeavors. Coverage of the

medieval period through the campaigns of the Ottoman Empire is particularly strong. Early Islam and modern terrorist activity receive less

attention. Entry choices are often puzzling: all of the Crusades except the Fourth Crusade receive a separate entry. Several early caliphs who

were key to the spread and influence ofIslam, e.g., Uthman ibn Ali and Husayn ibn Ali, do not have separate entries. Nor is there any discussion of many well-known terrorist incidents, such as the attacks at the 1972

Munich Olympics. Additionally, this set would have benefited from better editing. The index lists three separate entries for Richard I and

two for Muhammad ibn Abd-\'Vahhab, all with different page numbers. Although it covers an important topic, this encyclopedia lacks the

breadth and depth to be a complete resource. Summing Up: Optional.

the US economy valued at more than $14 trillion in 2010 and in light of the recent debt crisis, the interactions of the various organizations,

This four-volume encyclopedic collection aims to cover women and women's issues worldwide in the 21st century. \'Vhile the editors

acknowledge that many of the articles are written through a feminist lens, the collection is not focused on feminism specifically. Topics range ftom activism and business to sexuality and sports, and the editors attempt to

represent a global perspective. The set includes many biographies and country profiles, all related to women's issues and lives. Not all topics are broadly related to women, but the articles discuss how women are affected or associated with a topic, with sample titles including "Vocational and

Trade School Faculty" and "Reality Television." Some more obvious articles are titled "Rape," ""D1ird Wave Feminism," and "Heads of State, Female."

Alphabetically arranged, the articles are generally written at a level suitable for undergraduates. See also references point readers to related materiaL and each article has a "further reading" section. Some articles

include images, charts, or graphs. Contributors' names and university affiliations are provided, but not their credentials. Although the set

aims for a global perspective, most contributors are affiliated with US institutions. This set also features a "Chronology of Women in Today's \'Vorld" that spans 2000-2010. Additionally, a readers' guide organizes

articles by broad categories. At the end of the fourth volume, a resource guide lists relevant books, journals, and web resources. The fourth

volume includes a short glossary and a 140-page appendix consisting solely of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action from the Fourth

chapters that focus on Significant trends. Comparing the countries included in the "Country Studies" section of this newest edition reveals some differences. Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy, and

the Scandinavian region are featured in all previous editions, whereas Russia and Poland, included in this t()l!rth edition, did not always

appear in older editions. "The country studies provide an excellent historical overview, along with coverage of the current political climate, for each featured country. The chapter on postwar Italy's complicated political history is particularly interesting. The editors continue to address significant European issues. Contributors represent scholars from a variety of disciplines and insriwtions. Some names are new to this edition, while others have contributed to earlier versions. This reference work studies the history of the British Empire from 1780 to 1980, encompassing the period from the start of the Second British Empire to the decolonization era of the latter half of the 20th century. Faught (Tyndale Univ. College, Toronto) previously wrote GO/don: Victorian Hero (2008) and The Oxfind Movement (2003). This new handbook features 400 A-Z entries, which range in length from 50 to 380 words and conclude with a two-item "further readings" list. The subjects covered include legislation and treaties, events (Amritsar Riots, Cripps Mission), wars, companies (Hudson's Bay Company, East India Company), indigenous nations (Xhosa, Maori), and political organizations (Indian National Congress, All India Muslim l.eague). Biographical entries for individuals include British politicians, colonial governors and administrators, nationalist leaders, military officers, and imperial writers and propagandists. Individual entries are provided for the empire's colonies and dominions, ranging from India and Canada to Nauru and the Pitcairn Islands. The entries for each colony provide a capsule history from the first British encounter to independence. As a handbook of several hundred entries, the work is selective rather than comprehensive in its coverage. Also included are a two-page time line and a three-page bibliographic note. Some of these records are now available on !he Vault, an attractive public access site developed in response to the Freedom ofInformation Act. It is relatively easy to use. 111e main page offers categories ranging from Anti-War to Hot Topics to Violent Crime; an A-Z index; Recently Added files; and an easy search mechanism. Information retrieval is somewhat inconsistent; files on individuals are listed by name/section number, e.g., l.ucille Ball/part 1 of 1. Subject record files are listed chronologically. Keyword searches, which are not returned in any clear order, contain only the individual name and the section number. Each link reveals a PDF of the scanned case file, but does not contain landmarks to indicate the location of information related to the desired subject. However, the Advanced Search enables users to locate specific references.

Users need to be aware that these records are incomplete and that material tends to be subjective. Many of these PDF files of the agency's declassified records have been heavily "scrubbed" by blacking out names or phrases that might refer to classified information. Frequently the original records' quality is so poor that pages are unreadable. The Vtwlt is not a

Previously titled A Dictionm), 0/ Ivlodem Legal Usage (2nd ed., CH, Mar'96, 33-3649), this work is designed to allow readers who write legal English to resolve the many grammatical and stylistic questions that arise. This readable third edition adds many new (and many more) citations with citable examples. Garner serves as editor in chief of Black's l.aw Dictionm), (9th ed., 2009) and contributed a chapter to The Chicago Manllalo/Style (16th ed., CH, Jan' 11, 48-2398). His writing simply flows. Interspersed with many concise definitions are essay entries on style; grammar and usage; legallexicology and special conventions; word formation, inflection, spelling, and pronunciation; and punctuation and typography. These entries also are listed in a section tided "Classified Guide to Essay Entries" at the front of the book so they can be easily identified. The definitions assist readers with differentiating terms that are near-synonyms, showing the most effective use, and improving accuracy in legal writing. Phrases are listed and defined, with their proper usage clarified. New indexes list the authors and journals cited. This dictionary by Goldman (Joint Military Intelligence College, Washington, DC) is part of a series on intelligence and espionage with the cutesy acronym SPIES. 111e foreword indicates that it is aimed at practitioners-new and experienced. It also claims that one could simply read this volume for enjoyment; one does wonder about reading a technical reference work in that way. The publisher indicates that "the number of terms, abbreviations, and acronyms has more than doubled for this new edition" (1st ed., CH, Dec'06, 44-1874). Most of the entries, of which there are hundreds, have notations about the source of the word or phrase. The book also has a helpful acronym list several hundred items long. Included are a topical index and a list of essential Web sites. Most of these sites seem to be of a permanent namre (governmental agencies and the like), which is good; otherwise this section would become dated rather quickly. Major omissions include SIPRI and IISS. Some annoying spelling errors, e.g., "Spainish" and "Pittsburg," are evident; these should not be found in a second edition. This comprehensive and foundational work, a "thematic analysis of interest groups and lobbying," traces rhe history and development of advocacy groups in the American political system since their inception in the 18th century. Loomis (Univ. of Kansas) is coeditor of a widely used textbook on the subject. This new guide is divided into six parts featuring 36 chapters written mainly by academicians. Chapters treat a panoply of topics including theoretical approaches to the subject, the influence of these groups on the growth of government and in electoral campaigns, and lobbying tactics and regulations. Chapters 12-24 are devoted to discussions of groups by sector and type-agriculture, business and organized labor, defense issues, civil rights, religious institutions, women's organizations, education, the environment, and intergovernmental and foreign lobbying-and constitute the longest and perhaps most useful part. \Vhile intended as an academic reference source, this volume will appeal to a diverse audience of students, scholars, and interested laypersons alike. This Web site is a companion to the award-winning magazine of the same name, published by academically acclaimed SAGE Publications and fOunded in 1972. \'Vell-known editor Kampfner is an author, broadcaster, and commentator. The current site was developed in 2009 when its forerunner <http://www. indexonline.org.blog> ceased. This site contains a wealth of information from international organizations that promote freedom of expression. Partners range from the ACLU to the Human Rights House Network to the Open Society Institute. One of the most interesting features of the site is its coverage of globally important landmark issues, such as the 1989 fatwa issued by the supreme leader of Iran, Ayatollah Khomeini, against Salman Rushdie, targeting his novel Satanic Verses. This Web site, or at least its predecessor, has not been without controversy. Among other incidents, it posted comments in 2004 that were interpreted by some as condoning the murder of Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh. This second edition is a one-man labor of love by Jones (LSUMonroe). The first (CH, Mar'03, 40-3779) followed in the caisson tracks of Mark Boatner's excellent The Civil Wttr DictiollCllY (rev ed., CH, Jan'89, 26-2464), 'The second edition's arrangement follows the earlier version, beginning with introductory maps, a chronology, and a historical overview. Selection criteria indicate that the emphasis of the work is, like Boatner's, on military activities. This is not a comprehensive war guide like Encyclopedia of the American CilJil Wttr, edited by D. S. Heidler and J. T. Heidler (CH, Jun'Ol, 38-5346). Topics such as medicine and burial, international relations, the role of the home front, women who were not nurses, economics, slavery, contraband trade, and various government agencies--North and South-are largely absent. Thus the bulk of the work is an A-Z dictionary containing entries for all manner of topics related to fighting the US Civil War, including individuals (the Strongest aspect of the book), concepts and terminology (e.g., "embalmed beef"), battles, weapons, warships, and more.

Jones makes an cfrort to sort out the various names and spellings given to battles or other activities. Within entries, subjects that have stand-alone citations of their own are cross-referenced with boldface

Part 2 covers 1763-1979 and contains US federal codes, more constitutional conventions and compilations, state statutes, city charters, proceedings of city councils, and additional municipal codes. Searching options include keyword, title, author, date, evidence code number, exhibit number, trial issues (e.g., Food Experiments, via a dropdown menu), defendant, transcript page number, and HLSL unique digital item number. One may also search the full text of the first 7 days of NMT proceedings; the 12 trials required over 1,200 days of proceedings. The HLSLS collection of Nuremberg materials fills nearly 700 boxes, and the library is currently seeking funding to digitize the remaining nine NMT trials as well as the International Military Tribunal trial of major war criminals.

Other sites have digitized various collections of Nuremberg trial materials. They include the International Military 7i-ibunal for Germany, part of the Avalon Project at Yale Law School <http://avalon.law.yale.edu/ subjcct_menus/imt.asp> (review of overall site, CH, Sup'05, 42Sup-0500), and '{he Library of Congress's Nuremberg li'iills <http://www. loc.gov/ rrlfrd/Military _Law/N urember!;-trials.htmb. However, these sites have digitized the pages from the printed Nuremberg volumes; additionally, they lack the metadata that HLSL has added. One hopes funding will be available to finish what the HLSL has only just started. Summing Up: Recommended. ** Lower-division undergraduates through researchers/faculty.-j. A. Quirk (Univ. of British Columbia) and Cunion (Univ. of Mount Union) offer a current, comprehensive, and accessibly written overview of major policy areas pertaining to the US. Organized by topic (e.g., "Child Nutrition") under broad thematic areas such as "Agriculture," over 150 essays by US-based academics contextualize policy initiatives, describing the reasons and circumstances of their creation and development. Essays summarize and analyze key statutes, programs, administrative rules, judicial decisions, and their outcomes. Unique to this collection is the treatment of relevant state and local statutory and case law, regulations, and policies, e.g., in discussions of school lunch programs, eminent domain, and medical marijuana. Concise summaries of the often-complex interplay between the different branches and levels of US government can be difficult to

find. Similar works such as Major Acts of Congress, edited by Brian Landsberg (CH, May'04, 41-5048), are limited to federal legislative activity and presume a knowledge of statute names that undergraduates or nonspecialists rarely possess. '111is new three-volume set fills an important gap in the reference literature. Each essay is supplemented by a long bibliography. Unfortunately, overly tight formatting makes the bibliographic entries difficult to read. A general bibliography and index add to the utility of this set. This second edition has been updated through May 2011, incorporating the death of Os am a bin Laden, among other developments. It includes about 60 new entries, along with revised and new material. Key individuals, organizations, events, and topics are profiled. The range of coverage goes beyond Islamist and Middle Eastern terrorism to include terrorism in Europe and Latin America as well as animal rights, anti-abortion violence, and domestic extremist violence. Many of the contributors are known experts in the field, and all of the entries are sourced. A lengthy, up-to-date bibliography is included. The work is not flawless. Several small factual errors include a reference to the" 11 th Armored Cavalry Division" (it is the 11 th Armored Cavalry Regiment). As with any book treating controversial topics, some questionable interpretations are offered. For example, the Iraq War entry states that the

The core of this dictionary by Sutter (GeorgetOwn Univ.) comprises 500-plus short and medium-length entries on significant concepts, institutions, people, places, and events in the foreign affairs of the People's Republic of China. Although a small number of entries deal with Chinese histOry before 1949, most of the content concerns events since the Chinese Communist Party took conttOl of the Chinese mainland. Chinese relations with practically every part of the world garner some coverage, but relations with the US, tensions with Taiwan, and the Chinese government's foreign policy establishment attract most of Sutter's attention. The book begins with a chronology (1949-2010) and concise survey of China's foreign relations, and closes with a substantial bibliography and bibliographic essay. The entries are velY clear but tend to be basic (with a [,ir amount of repetition among related entries), making the dictionary most appropriate for undergraduates engaging in their first forays into the subject. How many people recall poring over the GlIilllzess Book of World Records as children? The Atlas of Sports by Tomlinson (Univ. of Brighton, UK) could be just that book for sports fans of all ages. Its authentically international scope covers sports as diverse as baseball, soccer, and pato. The book's first section, "International Sports Politics," includes entries like "The Olympic Games." The second section presents sports alphabetically, from American football to wrestling. The third section, "The Economics of Sports," includes entries such as "Gambling" and

"Sponsorship." The last section is an alphabetical listing describing sports culture in 77 countries. All entries combine narrative, data, maps, and graphics, presenting thorough treatment of topics. Navigation is enabled through strong indexing and a descriptive table of contents. In the age of the Internet, many may question the value of a collection of facts in print format; however, this book adds value through readability and analysis. A tine example of a thematic atlas, it performs as much like a textbook as a reference source, providing strong overviews of topics while eliciting questions and inspiring ideas for further exploration. Any of its entries could be the foundation of a class lecture or research project. Summing Up: Highly recommended. *** Lower-division undergraduates and general readers.-R. Launched in July 2011, ir includes material from several collections-in particular from Historical Photographs of China, the Sir Roben Han Collection, and Joseph Needham's Photographs of\vartime China-and from Google Books. Users may search or browse across the collections and conducr Boolean searches, retlning results by date, viewing geotagged map results, and exploring connections between results. Users may download images of interest and save them to My Workbench. ~vfetadata for the images may include date, people depicted, other depictions, keywords, notes, photographer, classification, and image type. Data for many of the phorographs is incomplete, and the site seeks users' assistance in identifying photographs.

Vislltllising China "attempts to combine the Hexibility of crowd sourcing and informal annotation with the structure and provenance of archived collections." Its goal is to create an authoritative resource to "supporr research, teaching and learning." In the future, the project will digitize the rest of the Bristol collection (approximate 15,000 images), and other collections from 'The British Library; The Needham Research Institute, Cambridge; The School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS); and the Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution. With its unique and extensive collection of images and its well-built interface, this is a valuable resource for researchers, genealogists, and others, potentially "all those involved in trade and relations with China who wish to understand better China's recent cultural and political history."

Part of Hackett's series of "essential" readings by authors such as Confucius, Augustine, and JefFerson, this sourcebook presents translated excerpts fl'om the work of the 14th-century scholar and poet Francesco Petrarca. Hainsworth's translations are capable, but Petrarch is difficult to essentialize: his Secretum candidly details longstanding internal conHict between loverlpoet and humanist scholar. 111is volume is the "essential Pete'arch" for the former, but not the latter. Hainsworth's choice of excerpts heavily favors the vernacular poetics, especially the Callzoniere (comprising 62 percent of the volume). After the Ii'izmzph of Eternity and book three of the Secretum, Hainsworth (emer., Italian literature, Oxford Univ., UK) rranslates five of the Latin letters: besides the ubiquitous "Ascent of Mont Ventoux" and "Letter to Posterity," these chieHy complement the Cmzolliere.
