REVISEDsee NEXT COLUMN

August 30, 2020 - Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time“Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.” Mt 16:24

Take Up Your Cross and Follow Me

The First Reading is taken from the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah 20:7-9 in which we hear Jeremiah giving voice to this internal anguish of mind; he hates what he has to say to his people, yet he is compelled by God to say it.

The Second Reading is from the Letter of St. Paul to the Romans 12:1-2 in which he tells the Roman Christians (converts, for the most part, from paganism) that they must prove themselves worthy of this great favor, they must live truly Christian lives.

The Gospel is from Matthew 16:21-27.

...Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? Or what can one give in exchange for his life? For the Son of Man will come with his angels in his Father's glory, and then he will repay everyone according to his conduct. (Matt. 16:24-27)

From all eternity this was God's plan for mankind. But because sin had entered into the world before the Incarnation took place, the Son of God in his human nature had to suffer the violent death of the cross at the hands of sinners. In this very suffering he became the Lamb of God who took away the sins of the world, as the second-Isaiah had foretold in his "suffering servant" prophecies (Is. 53: 1-7; 42: 1-9 etc). His death, because he was God as well as man, was a sacrifice, an atonement, of infinite value, and therefore obtained forgiveness from the Father for all the sins of the human race.

In foretelling his sufferings and death, which took place some months later, Christ intended to prepare his disciples and other followers for what he knew would be for them a severe crisis of faith. He also took occasion from it to remind his disciples, and all others who would follow him, of what their attitude to suffering and death should be. He told them, and us too, that we must be ever ready to accept sufferings in this life, and even an untimely death if that should be demanded of us, rather than deny our Christian faith.

To prove their loyalty to their faith in Christ thousands of Christians in the early Church, and thousands more during persecutions in later centuries, gladly took him at his word and went joyfully to their martyrdom. It is to be hoped that, aided by God's grace, we would all be ready to imitate their example, if called on to prove our fidelity to Christ and our Christian faith. But at the moment what Christ expects and asks of us is that we should bear the sufferings and hardships of daily life cheerfully and gladly for his sake. This daily carrying of our Christian cross can be, and is for many, a prolonged martyrdom. Poverty, ill-health, cruelty and hardheartedness met with in the home and in one's neighbors, are heavy crosses which only a truly Christian shoulder can bear. But, if we were offered health, happiness, peace, wealth and power for the next fifty or seventy years on this earth, in exchange for an eternal heaven after death, what rational one among us would accept that offer?

Christians know that this life is a period of training, which makes us ready hereafter to receive the eternal reward which Christ has won for us. Every trainee knows that one must endure certain hardships and sufferings in order to merit graduation into one's chosen profession or trade. On our Christian graduation day we shall, please God, hear the welcome words : "Well done good and faithful servant; because you have been faithful in small things, I will trust you with greater, come and join in your Master's happiness" (Mt. 25: 21). May God grant that every one of us will hear these words of welcome.

FAITH IN ACTION: ST. STEPHEN THE FIRST MARTYR HELPS HOLY FAMILY TO SECURE THE PARISH GROUNDS

As many of you are painfully aware, on Tuesday, August 18th our statue of our Blessed Mother was violently attacked resulting in the removal of her head. Our monument of the Ten Commandments was also defaced with graffiti. As hideous and sacrilegious as these acts are, the result has been, and continues to be, moments of grace. I invite you to recall the words of St Paul in his letter to the Romans, chapter 5, and verse 20: “…where sin increased, grace overflowed all the more.”

As you are also aware, we were blessed with the grace to repair the damage and return to a sense of normalcy in a very short period of time. What you are not aware of is the tremendous amount of love and compassion that has flowed out of this experience across the world as we have been showered with expressions of condolences and support, all of which strengthens our resolve and our faith.

Upon hearing the news last week, St Stephen the First Martyr Catholic Church, in Sacramento, immediately put their faith into action. They began to offer acts of reparation, through Prayer, for the serious offense against our faith that help us to focus on the eternal God, His Risen Son, Jesus Christ, and in our final glorious resurrection where our Blessed Mother Mary is with her Son Jesus Christ and all the Angels and Saints.

The community of St. Stephen also began an online giving fund raising drive to help us procure security cameras for our parish property. This Fund raiser began last week and continued through Monday evening. The success of this fund raising drive had to have been Holy Spirit driven. It was surely an outpouring of God’s love and grace through his beloved people at St. Stephen. The end result was so uplifting, at a time of depression, so edifying to realize that the majority of God’s creation is motivated by his love. Both Fr. Enrique and Dcn. Mark Holt went out to St. Stephen the First Martyr Catholic Church, to meet with Fr. Joshua Curtis, FSSP, the Pastor of St. Stephen, to express the heart felt gratitude of our Holy Family community for the incredible donation of $8, 842 for our security cameras. Words cannot begin to express the depth of our sincere gratitude for this generous outpouring of grace. Where sin abounds, God’s grace abounds all the more!

With this great example of St. Stephen, we are inspired to follow their example to complete the task of securing the sacred grounds of our church. This becomes all the more important as we are seeing an increase in the defacing and vandalism of our parish property. We have seen satanic graffiti on the sidewalk at the back of the community center, burnouts in the parking lot late at night, needles, trash, and human waste left behind by overnight visitors.

We have a great need to secure our parish property, now, not later when something worse may happen. We will start a giving campaign immediately to help us resolve this issue. We are currently soliciting proposals for surveillance cameras and fencing. We are also very open to other ideas for securing our parish grounds for the safety and wellbeing of everyone who comes to us seeking a safe place of sanctuary and solitude, to enter into the peace of Christ and leave the days tribulations outside the gates of this holy place.

We will have a special sacrificial offering box, for parish security, set up next to our current weekly Holy Family Sunday offering box. We already have a special fund set up for online giving in support of parish security. You will find it at the top of the list of all of our funds. It is listed directly under the fund for Legacy Pledges (this is the fund for the renovation of our church). We are currently upgrading our online giving program to offer a simpler, user friendly format. We anticipate that being available early next week.

We will include weekly updates of the progress of this drive in the Stewardship corner of our weekly parish bulletin.

We cannot let this moment pass by without putting our faith into action.

The moment is now, to keep our parish property sacred and safe.

This is real.

This is the reality we are living today in our community, our society, and our world.

May Almighty God Bless you and protect you and keep you safe in His Love and peace.

Best Wishes from Fr. Enrique, Fr. Tristan, Deacon’s and Parish staff In Christ Jesus, our beloved Lord, Fr. Enrique Alvarez, Pastor

WE ARE GRATEFUL FOR THE SUPPORT OF OUR CHURCH

As we are able to gather together as a community on a limited basis for the celebration of the Sacred Liturgy, our daily operational expenses remain, and we continue to be dependent and sincerely grateful for your financial support and generosity. Since the beginning of this pandemic we have experienced a 40-50% reduction in weekly donations. These are very dangerous times and Fr. Enrique and our Finance Council are doing all they can to reduce our expenses and keep our beloved parish vibrant and financially stable. We invite you to financially support your parish through online giving https://www.myowngiving.com/Default.aspx?cid=605 or by mailing your donations to the parish office.

Let us pray for an end to the devastating wildfires and ultimately for an end to this horrid pandemic and a return to the celebration of Mass inside our beloved Holy Family church and the ability to gather as a whole community, free of any restrictions.

Please pray for the health of all during these environmentally challenging days. May the intercession of our Blessed Mother Mary help us offer to one another the charity and encouragement of her Son, Jesus.

AVISO SOBRE LAS CONDICIONES DE AIRE Efectivo: 8/26/2020

RESPECT LIFEA LITANY FOR LIFE

Based on 1 Corinthians 12:31-13:8a

Lord, love is patient. Give to the mother who is tempted to abort her child the patience to endure the suffering that will bring forth new life.

Lord, love is kind. Give to the new father whose friends tell him to abort his child the gentleness, compassion and courage to support his wife and child, protect them from all that could harm them, and sustain them against selfishness and hate.

Lord, love is not jealous. Remove from all human hearts the temptation to trade human life for advantage, convenience or personal benefit. Deliver us from the expediency that values personal gain and pleasure over the dignity of human life.

Lord, love is not pompous. Deliver us from the arrogance that sees our needs or wants as superior to the rights of others. Help us to see all our brothers and sisters as worthy of all of our love.

Lord, love is not inflated. Grant us a share in the humility of your Son, who sought not to be served, but to serve. Help us to see in every human life, rich or poor, young or old, guilty or innocent, a reflection of your image and likeness.

Lord, love is not rude. Implant a spirit of gentle compassion in the hearts of each of your sons and daughters, Lord, that no person may ever be treated as less than the child of God which you have made them, through the Paschal Death and Resurrection of your only-begotten Son.

Lord, love does not seek its own interests. Give to all who govern us, Lord, a generous spirit, that our country may not so much seek to be great as to be good, to be rich in possessions as to be rich in mercy, or to be renowned as to be renowned for justice and truth for all.

Lord, love is not quick-tempered. Grant that by our prudence and patience we might learn to live that sacrificial love by which your Son died for us on the Cross, that all men and women might know our kindness and willingness to love them unto death after the model of our Lord and Savior.

Lord, love does not brood over injury. Give us the grace of mercy, Lord, that like your Son we might forgive those who sin against us, seeking only their redemption and eternal happiness. Forgive the abortionist who takes the life of an unborn child. Move his heart, grant him the grace of repentance, and give us a full share in your mercy.

Lord, love does not rejoice over wrongdoing. Help us to seek only the redemption of wrongdoers, Lord, and remove from our hearts all desire for vengeance and hate. Help us to desire not revenge, even for the horrors of abortion, but the repentance and happiness of all your children.

Lord, love rejoices with the truth. Implant deep within our hearts a sense of the joy of the Gospel of Life, and make us joy-filled evangelists of your great gift of life.

Lord, love bears all things. When we are insulted or reviled for the sake of the Gospel of Life, give us the courage and the innocence of the children of God. Help us, Lord, to suffer for the sake of your truth, and never to seek our own good, even in the good work we do.

Lord, love believes all things. Deliver us from every temptation to despair, Lord. When we are discouraged, give us the grace to trust in your mercy and to know that your love is ever victorious, even in the face of darkness, death, and hate.

Lord, love hopes all things. As we trust in your infinite love, O Lord, give us the trust that comes from the Gospel, and help us to cling to that sure and certain hope that for those who love God all things come to good.

Lord, love endures all things. In the face of death, destruction, and a culture of death, never let us lose sight of the beauty of the face of your only-begotten Son, Our Lord, who suffered the torments of his Passion and Death for the sake of our sins. Let us trust that through his Passion we will have the strength to do your will and to carry each cross that comes our way for the glory of God and the love of his little ones.

Lord, love never fails. When the crusade for life seems unending and our latest initiatives have failed, when our hearts are filled with sadness or anger or fear, come to our aid, O Lord, and give us the assurance that you are ever with us, that your mercies will not end, and that you, our Creator and our God, will bring victory to all who seek to love as you have commanded them.
