Révision du Passé Composé By: Taylor Fowler
There are two ways to make a sentence past tense. You can use être, or avoir, depending on the verb in the sentence. For example:
WITH AVOIR:•J’ai visité le Mexique.• Nous avons dansé.• Tu m’as téléphoné.
WITH ÊTRE: • Je suis allé(e) au parc.• Nous sommes sorti(e)s.• Tu es descendu(e) du bus.
Don’t forget: With avoir the subject and the verb do not have to agree, while with être, they do.
The passé composé of REFLEXIVE verbs is formed with être. For example:
• Marc s’est promené en ville. • Paul et Alice se sont reposés.
Dr. & Mrs. VandertrampWhile the passé composé of most verbs is formed with avoir, some verbs are formed with être. These motion verbs follow the acronym Dr. & Mrs. Vandertramp. The verbs are:

Entrer- to enter
Retourner- to return
