DANGER AT HOME

You are in a busy public area: coughing or breathing in polluted air. Driving home

in peak traffic, you curse as smoke and exhaust fumes assail you from all sides. But

when you reach home, you shut the windows, switch on the fan, and relax,

breathing a sigh of relief. Feeling safe finally.

But are you? Actually not. Right here too, countless allergens and pollutants are

possibly assailing you. You are being subject to Indoor Air Pollution (AIP).

Few people know this because most studies, media attention and public campaigns

have focussed on outdoor pollution. But IAP is scarier than you could imagine. India

currently has the world’s largest number of IAP-related health problems with 75%

of its households burning wood, dung cakes, and

crop residues (agricultural waste)-the “traditional” biomass fuels. Also, an

estimated 5,00,00 women and children die in India each year due to IAP –related

causes-25% 0f estimated IAP –related deaths

worldwide, according to a World Bank report.Studies by J.N Pandey, Professor of

Medicine, All India Institute Of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, show

how unhealthy cooking methods and use of biomass fuels not only contribute to

respiratory-tract infections, including chronic bronchitis in woman, but also puts

children below five at grave risk. As he notes, even poor ventilation contributes.

Broadly, in urban India, the main IAP contributors are aero biologicals and irritants.

Aerobiological

are dust mites, cockroaches, pollen and fungi, pet excreta, and bacteria and viruses.

It takes a 100 dust mites per gm of dust to develop sensitivity and 500 dust to

trigger coughing and wheezing according to Bangalore–based Dr. Paramesh,

Paediatric pulmonologist.

Even our kitchen trash-bin contributes a huge volume of illness causing bacteria

and unpleasant odour to indoor air. Cockroach droppings trigger allergic asthma.

Irritants are carpets, heavy carpets, heavy draperies, and cupboards made of

compressed wood,which contain formaldehyde causing chronic eye irritation,

cough and asthma. Granite emits random that emits cough.

LPG and electricity are healthier for cooking. Modern fuels are especially needed in

vulnerable areas.

Keep kitchens scrupulously clean.

Dr. Paramesh’s suggestions: Allow plenty of sunlight into the home (it kills germs,

prevents fungi moulds) and permit cross ventilation. Sun Mattresses, pillows, and

carpets regularly.Ideal relative humidity for the home is 40 to 50 %.

Pets are okay, if you keep them clean. A better (and cheaper) alternative is indoor

plants, which absorb carbon dioxide and emit oxygen.

2. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow:

1. Children need to learn to take care of themselves because schools can be very

stressful. They need guidelines on ways to be calm, be able to return to the present

moment, to be able to handle their emotions and realize that their emotions are

not in their control. This guideline is what we call mindfulness training. Mindfulness

meditation is the practice of stopping and becoming aware of what we are thinking

and doing, in other words, introspecting. The more we are mindful of ourthoughts,

speech and actions, the more concentration and clarity we develop on what we are

doing and the greater is our depth of understanding of a situation.

2. Teachers and parents have to become role models for young people. Through

mindful practices such as mindful breathing and mindful walking, they must be able

to stop and look deeply and be called in order to see the root and the consequence

of an event /action/ act with understanding and peace. If teachers can do that,

children will follow it as well. Similarly, l we have to learn how to handle our anger

without venting frustration on our children. We have to reach out and help diffuse

the violence within ourselves. Mindfulness can be incorporated into the school and

classroom.

3. I can recall a mathematics teacher, who has come to several retreats at Plum

Village, a retreat center in France established by me, who had a difficult time in his

classroom because he would get angry in no time, land consequently used to throw

chalk at his students. After he practiced mindfulness for a while, he transformed

dramatically. He further shared the practice with the children also wherein they

had to stop everything and clap their hands every 15 minutes to practice breathing

and smiling. His students enjoyed practicing with him and his class made good

progress. Soon every class in the school adopted my techniques.

4. We should practice mindful meditation collectively because looking deeply into

our situation is not an individual matter. We have to combine our individual insights

into collective wisdom. Students need deep relaxation to overcome the stress of

contemporary life. There are several exercises that can help children practice

mindfulness: practicing with a bell, pebble meditation, deep relaxation, touching

the earth for children, snack meditation and embracing strong emotions. In snack

meditation, for instance, students and teacher sit together in a circle and enjoy

eating together in silence. The children are taught to wait to begin eating until

everyone has got a snack and a drink. Further, the teacher can direct the

conversation of looking deeply into the snack or just ask a few questions and then

let students share and ask questions.
