I’ve got a list of all the Delta Omicron alumni by pin num- ber. Brothers with the last names of Kinnison, Bistline, Downing, and Hechtner are found in the first 100 numbers. They came from all over Idaho and the Northwest. What drew them to the University of Idaho and what compelled these guys to get together and start a fraternity? All I know is that they must have had tremendous faith in themselves and the future in order to join together and build a 12,000- square foot building on Elm Street in Moscow, Idaho. These men paved the way for future generations of UI students to pledge the Sigma Nu Fraternity. If you would like a copy of the list of alumni, send me an e-mail at [email protected] and I’ll send it to you. Several years ago a group of active alumni got together and realized that if the current chapter house wasn’t rebuilt, we would soon be faced with closing it down. Just like our founders, these men had tremendous faith in their fellow classmates and the future of Sigma Nu in Moscow. They knew their hard work and dedication would pay off for future generations. They knew it was their turn to pay back the debt owed to our founders. The bottom line is this, of the $1.9 million it cost to rebuild the house, the alumni are paying for about $1.2 million and the chapter is paying for $700,000 over a 20-year note. Currently the alumni have pledged nearly $900,000, but we need an additional $300,000 to pay for our portion of the loan. If you haven’t made a pledge to the capital campaign, do it now. This spring has been an exciting and highly involved semester for the DeltaOmicron Chapter of Sigma Nu thus far. The active members have stepped into

high gear in all aspects, from philanthropy to academics to intramurals. DeltaOmicron is continuing involvement in the Greek system, the University, and theMoscow community.

RECRUITMENT

Delta Omicron is excited for the upcoming recruitment and to improve on lastyear’s recruitment success. Strategic planning has begun for the approaching sum-mer and expectations are high for our newly elected recruitment chairmen, TonyKoonce ’06, ∆∆ΟΟ 1592 and Lucas Bryan ’07, ∆∆ΟΟ 1605. Tony is serving his secondterm as a recruitment chairman; his experience combined with Lucas’s enthusiasmand personality will ensure Delta Omicron has another outstanding summer recruit-ment. To contribute to our motivated recruitment chairmen, Delta Omicron is oneof the few chapters chosen for a Recruitment Assist Visit. This program, providedby the Sigma Nu General Fraternity, will focus on bettering our recruitment processand utilizing Sigma Nu’s values-based recruitment.

PHILANTHROPY

Last fall, Delta Omicron co-hosted the second annual Sigma Nu Alcohol PreventionWeek with the Alpha Phi Sorority. This Greek-wide philanthropy features severalevents throughout the week geared toward alcohol education and abuse prevention. With participation from the university and Greek community it was a huge success. All proceeds went to the Mothers Against Destructive Decisions organization. InApril, Delta Omicron will hold its annual Sigma Nu Shootout. This women’s three-on-three basketball tournament philanthropy is a fun and popular event for theGreek sororities. The proceeds will go to an organization of the winner’s choosing.

ACADEMICS

The academic program was reconstructed in the fall and has already proven effec-tive. Delta Omicron currently sits in fourth place of all campus fraternities with ourG.P.A. Our scholarship chairman, Nicholas Hatch ’07, ∆∆ΟΟ 1595 has done an out-standing job and is expecting Delta Omicron to rise to the top ranks in academicsby the end of the spring semester.

As spring approaches and weather warms upin Moscow, we encourage all alumni and fam-ilies to visit us in our beautiful facility. Bringyour clubs and catch a round of golf with theactives.

Michael R. McLaughlin ’70, DO 939 joinedSigma Nu because he liked the idea of living

with a group of guys, the academic help that a frater-nity could provide, and the opportunity to learnsocial graces. He also had two older brothers in thefraternity, James McLaughlin ’67, ∆∆ΟΟ 882 andJohn McLaughlin ’69, ∆∆ΟΟ 916.

During his years as an active member, Michaelembraced the leadership opportunities availablethrough Sigma Nu. He held the positions of eminentcommander, lieutenant commander, and recruitmentchairman. In those positions he learned how to dealwith issues in the 1970s when the concept of “frater-nity” was being judged, and much of the society hadthe anti-establishment mentality. He also learnedhow to make decisions involving people he workedwith as well as lived with. These were all very valu-able learning experiences he still calls upon today.

Michael grew up in Mountain Home, Idaho. Moving away from homeafter high school and making new friends was something with whichSigma Nu helped him. He says, “Making those friends in the frater-nity was huge. Sigma Nu also helped me develop as a person, gaveme confidence, and gave me great learning experiences.” Some of hisbest memories stem from Friday afternoons getting a group togetherto have a social function or going on a double date. He also remem-bers late nights studying with his brothers. Michael’s wonderful expe-rience is what compelled him to support the campaign. He knows thatfraternities need a good structure to thrive and he believes alumni playa big part in that. He feels his experience was so positive that hewanted to give back.

After graduating from Idaho in 1973 and receiv-ing his juris doctor degree in 1976 from theUniversity of Idaho College of Law, he openedhis own practice in 1976. In the early 1980s, hewas the Elmore County prosecuting attorney. From 1991 to 1997 he was the magistrate judgefor the Fourth Judicial District. He was thenappointed district judge for the Fourth JudicialDistrict in Ada County and serves in this roletoday.

The experience and leadership gained fromSigma Nu were stepping stones for JudgeMcLaughlin. He was honored in 2007 as therecipient of the Granata Award given by theIdaho Judiciary for his professionalism. Therecipients of the award are nominated for theircontributions to the Idaho judicial system, theirprofessionalism, and their capacity as a rolemodel over a considerable time period. Named

after the late Judge George G. Granata Jr. who exemplified profes-sionalism during his more than 20-year stint on the Idaho bench, thisaward is very prestigious, and Michael feels honored that his col-leagues nominated him.

Michael lives in Boise, Idaho, with his wife and college sweetheart,Tamara. They have three children: Ryan ’95, ∆∆ΟΟ 1427, Matthew ’98,∆∆ΟΟ 1476, and Patrick, and four grandchildren. In his free time,Michael enjoys reading, traveling, hiking, snowshoeing, and garden-ing. E-mail him at [email protected].
