We were met at Baires Roll by Javier, our guide, and Pepe, our bike tour guide. After pedaling for

a while we arrived at the Carlos Gardel museum in Abasto, to begin learning about Fileteado. A lot of

the houses near the museum were covered in this colourful, decorative artwork, which we soon learnt

is linked with Tango and the history of Buenos Aires. I wish streets in England looked like this! It gives

them a certain flavour which I love. We then got on the bikes again for another ride across the city to

San Telmo, this time stopping to point out bits of Fileteado that Javier saw.

After arriving at the Ayres Porteños Tango Suites, we met a true Fileteador artist who was going to

teach us how to paint. It was a lot of fun, and very interesting. The results were pretty mixed, as Gabriel

made it look easier than it is! However, I felt I learnt the basics, and when I showed people what I had

done, they seemed impressed. (maybe they were just being polite!) To finish off we went to a cafe where

we had coffee and snacks, and a good chat with all the members of the group. There was really good

Nos encontramos en Baires Roll con Javier, nuestro guía, y Pepe, el guía de las bicicletas. Después

de pedalear un rato, llegamos al museo Carlos Gardel, en el Abasto, para comenzar a aprender

acerca del fileteado. Muchas de las casas próximas al museo fueron cubiertas con este arte colorido,

decorativo, que pronto aprendí que está vinculado con el tango y la historia de Buenos Aires. ¡Cómo

me gustaría que las calles en Inglaterra fueran así! Les da un cierto sabor que me encanta. Subimos

nuevamente a las bicicletas para otro paseo por la ciudad hacia San Telmo. Esta vez paramos

para que Javier nos muestre algunos fileteados. /// Después nos encontramos un verdadero artista

fileteador que nos iba a enseñar a pintar. Fue muy divertido y muy interesante. Los resultados

fueron variados. ¡El maestro lo hizo parecer más fácil de lo que es! Sin embargo, sentí que aprendí

lo básico y cuando le mostré a la gente lo que había hecho, parecían impresionados (¡tal vez sólo

estaban siendo corteses!). Para terminar nos fuimos a un bar donde tuvimos una merienda y una

buena charla con todos los miembros del grupo. Había muy buena onda y una sensación de éxito,

pero, sobre todo, pasamos un gran día!

The journey by car to Jujuy is long, but with mate, music and the changing scenery it’s totally worth travelling half the country. /// In the main square of San Salvador de Jujuy, we met Gabriela, the co-owner (with Eduardo) of the place we stayed at. We followed her with our car and 10 minutes later we reached a cottage in the woods in the middle of a mountain. Awesome place! Breathing the fresh air automatically cleared out all the tiredness from the journey. That first day we had nothing else to do than lying on the hammocks and watch the day go by. /// We set the alarm clock at 8.30 am, but a woodpecker woke us up as early as 7 am. We no longer needed the alarm clock./// We visited the Lagunas de Yala, in the valleys area, and we hiked up the mountain paths joining the lakes. Then we drove along the dirt road to Termas de Reyes, where we spent the afternoon in a natural pool of natural thermal water against a wonderful backdrop of mountains. We ended up extremely relaxed and as wrinkly as raisins.

The next day we went to Calilegua National Park, in the Yungas forest. The good thing about going by car is that you can drive around and pull out in any of its paths. We took one which led us through a dense forest full of lianas for a couple of hours until we reached an almost hidden river. The only thing missing was spotting a wild animal, but we weren’t lucky enough. /// The mountain path led us up to the clouds, where we were bespelled by the lush natural sights. That cold night was perfect to spend hours by the fireplace in the cottage. /// A new day dawned, and it was time to enjoy the cottage and the sheer size of the estate. We strolled around its forests and even along the dry bed of a river, always escorted by Otto, the owners’ dog. /// On the advice of Gabriela, we hiked down the Huella Gaucha path, a beautiful mountain road full of history. It had been used by the gaucho guerilla groups during the independence wars. /// We concluded the afternoon walking around the city, with its main square, the church, the crafts fair and other beautiful and interesing places recovered by social organization Tupac Amaru.

I got up at 4 am, because by 5.30 am I had to be in Tilcara to pick up Pipo and Cachamay, an expert local guide, for a tour of the puna and especially to visit Jujuy’s hidden Moon Valley. Even the woodpecker was still asleep. So was Laura, who stayed in to rest. Once in Tilcara, we filled up the gas tank and set out for Abra Pampa. On the road to the puna we spotted wild vicuñas, beautiful vicuñas. There were also guanacos and llamas all over the place. But Cachamay was obsessed about finding a “suri” (a small rhea). /// We went past Laguna de los Pozuelos and went on along the famous Route 40. The immensity and beauty were stunning. The scenery changed all the time along the way. But when we reached Jujuy’s Moon Valley, Pipo and I went stump for words. /// Cachamay wouldn’t stop praising the place with pride, as if it were his place in the world. “This is unique”, he said. And he was right. It truly was nature’s work of art. /// We walked on the upper part and then we went round it to go down the valley, with a coolbox for the greatest picnic I’ve ever had in my life. We were on our own, it was like a journey back to prehistorical times.

We ambled around the valley for a good while, and then we went on past a number of little villages. We stopped at San Juan de Oros, a ghost village with a chapel still standing. The road led us on to Casa Colorada, where we had to pull out at a school to ask for water for the car, and then we got caught in a conversa-tion with its principal. With a pair of condors hovering over our heads, we went on to Rinconada, which was our last stop before heading back. We went back in silence, with an almost empty gas tank and happy in spite of the fact that Cachamay had to do without seeing a suri. /// When I woke up, I was all sore. Laura, on the other hand, was fresh as a daisy. However, we set out early for the Quebrada de Humahuaca anyway. The first stop was Purmamarca, where we walked around its curious little streets against the background of the Hill of the Seven Colors. We had humitas and kid stew and we couldn’t help ending up buying crafts at the main square. The harmony of the place wouldn’t let us go, but the salt lakes in Salinas Grandes were still waiting for us. We drove along a road over 4100m high, then we pulled out in the middle of that white sea and started walking endlessly, with the feeling that we were always in the same place. What a trip! Then we dipped our feet in the salt pools and bought one of the salt sculptures made by the workers in the salt lake.

At dusk, we drank some mate in Tilcara’s square. It was so nice

that we stayed for dinner at “Los Puestos”. Empanadas and

tamales as appetizers, then trout for Laura and llama steak

for me. For dessert, two local musicians delighted us with their

quenas and charangos. /// Once again, we hiked on some more

spectacular mountain paths and river crosses, this time on the

way to a magical village called Iruya, in the province of Salta.

We walked up and down its sloping little streets and had tamales

and quinoa pie in a family restaurant. The peace and harmony

ruling in the place was contagious. We spent several hours in

Iruya, but we could have perfectly stayed for a couple of days.

/// That same night we made it to Yavi, found a hostel, got

some spaghetti for dinner, and crashed out. /// Yavi is another

quiet village full of nice people and postcard sights around every

corner, at an altitude of 3440 m. We visited the church built

in the late 17th century, and the nearby Laguna Colorada, in

the middle of the 8 Hermanos mountain ridge. /// By noon, we

reached La Quiaca and walked across the border to Villazón, the

neighboring Bolivian town, to buy crafts and

trinkets. On the way back, we checked the Uquía church, distinc-tive for its original ángeles arcabuceros, and finally, Maimará, with its impressive mountain cemetery. /// We did a lot of things and there were still tons of things to do. After our last breakfast in the cottage, we set out for the journey back. We didn’t want to leave, but as we were going we got a puncture. Dicen que hay una maldición gitana que reza “ojalá te enamores”. Es que el amor es, a veces, el disfraz de algunas trampas de la vida. ¿O hay mejor disfraz que el que esconde lo opuesto de lo que muestra?

Desde mucho antes que los gitanos llegaran a estas latitudes, anda retozando por ahí un demonio al que los aborígenes llamaban Walichú, que en lengua mapundugun significa “alrededor de la gente”. Malo de toda maldad, impiadoso, inescrupuloso, de este ser conviene defenderse.

Algunos le tributan ofrendas, para congraciarse e ir zafando. Otros se escudan tras rituales, pócimas e invocaciones. Y de esto último viene la mutación de la palabra que, de nombrar al maligno, pasó a ser el nombre de todo brebaje, pócima, ritual o talismán, debidamente preparado por una bruja o chamán, que sirva de protección contra los males. Aunque su uso más conocido es el de lograr que alguien nos corresponda en el amor. Pero como para malo no sólo está el demonio, algunos también encargan gualichos para dirijir la maldad hacia un enemigo, adversario, competidor o suegra. Muchas veces la dos cosas se juntan: lograr que A se enamore de B, quien seguramente hará que A tenga una vida más o menos desdichada.

En Argentina y aledaños, cuando alguien se enamora se dice que está engualichado. Sobre todo cuando cambia hábitos, horarios y amigos desde que se enamoró. Porque tanto puede ser una bendición, como una maldición. Como la de los gitanos, como la de cruzarse con el Walichú en la soledad de la Pampa.

There’s supposed to be a gypsy spell which goes “hope you fall in love”. Indeed, sometimes love is the disguise of some of the traps of life. Or is there a better disguise than one which shows the opposite of what it hides? /// Since long before the Gypsy people made it to Argentina, a demon has been wandering around which the native people call Walichú, which means “among the people” in Mapundugun. An extremely evil, cruel, unscrupulous being, you’d better guard against him. /// Some give him presents to ingratiate themselves with him and avoid his evildoings. Others shelter behind rituals, potions and invocations. And it is the latter which originates the term which, originally used to name the evil one, has now come to mean the name of any potion, ritual or talisman duly prepared by a witch or a shaman to be used as a protection against evils. However, its most widespread use is to make somebody love us. But, since the devil is not the only evil one, some also ask for gualichos to direct evil towards an enemy, adversary, competitor or mother-in-law. Sometimes both things go together: having A fall in love with B, who will make A’s life more or less miserable. /// In Argentina and neighboring countries, someone who falls in love is said to be engualichado (under a spell). Particularly when they change habits, timetables and friends as a consequence. It can be both a blessing or a spell, like Gypsy spells, like running into Walichú in the solitude of the pampa.

La pizza es uno de los pocos ritos de celebración que tenemos los argen-tinos. Nadie que venga va a decir “lo mejor de la Argentina son las mujeres y la pizza”, porque la historia oficial es otra. Sin embargo, ya son cada vez

más frecuentes la excursiones “pizza/birra/fútbol” que se ofrecen a los turistas internacionales que llegan a Buenos Aires. Y supimos de un jeque o príncipe que llegó desde el medio oriente con el capricho gastronómico de ir a una conocida pizzería de la Boca, voluntad que sus custodios se vieron complicados en cumplir, dado que el susodicho no podía prescindir del turbante lo que no lo hacía muy in-cógnito que digamos.

De origen humilde muy comen-tado, podemos decir que ya superada la primera década de este siglo, la

Yes, there are different kinds of pizza: the pizza shared by father and son (usually accompanying those man-to-man talks), the pizza shared by male friends, the pizza shared by female friends, the pizza you eat when you’re down, the pizza you eat like you eat candy. There’s every kind of flavor, color, and price. But associated with it is a widespread sentiment which transcends its Italian origin: most of Buenos Aires pizzerias are owned by Spanish people, and the largest pizza house chain in Israel is owned by an Argentinean. /// Since Argentina is so prone to antinomies, maybe the ultimate survey should be carried out to determine at last whether the Argentineans’ preference is for hand-tossed or pan pie. One of the best-kept secrets among Argentina’s attrac-tions is not soccer, or tango, or the beef, but pizza.

pizza se ha constituído en algo que pide lugar entre los orgullos na-cionales. Muchos opinan que que la argentina es la mejor pizza del mun-do. Pero lo más interesante es lo que hay alrededor de comer pizza para los locales, que va más allá de alimentarse: se trata de un momento de placer garantizado. Sí, hay diferentes pizzas: la que come un padre con un hijo (suele ser testigo de las primeras a las últimas conversaciones de hombre a hombre), la que comen los amigos, la que comen las amigas, la del bajón, la que tiene carácter de golosina. Hay

pizzas de todos los sabores y colores (de billetes), pero un sentimiento ge-neralizado que trasciende su origen itá-lico: en Buenos Aires la mayoría de las pizzerías son de dueños españoles y también tenemos que mencionar que la cadena de pizzerías más grande de Israel tiene dueño argentino.

Eso sí, en un pueblo tan dado a las antinomias, podemos decir que la gran encuesta pendiente debería definir si a la piedra o al molde es la elegida o no. Ni el fútbol, ni el tango, ni la carne, la pizza es uno de los secretos mejor guardados entre las atracciones de este país.

Soñaba con jugar en la primera de Boca. Es más: soñaba con jugar en la Selección. Jugaba bien, tenía calidad y guapeza. Pero María Esther Duffau había nacido en el cuerpo equivocado.

Murió su mamá y vivió con su padre, alcohólico y golpeador, que la dejó en un asilo a los 6 años. En seguida se escapó y vivió en la calle. Y como para una nena la calle era demasiado dura, se escapó de María Esther y se refugió en Raulito. Caminó, habló, se cagó a trompadas y jugó al fútbol como un varón.

“Siempre me escapo. Desde que nací estoy escapándome” decía la actriz Marilina Ross personificándola en la exitosa película “La Raulito”, de 1974.Lustró zapatos, vendió diarios. Su cuerpo y su mente eran fugitivos que pasaban por el asilo, el reformatorio, el manicomio. Pero su “casa” era Boca Juniors. No se

perdía ni un partido: se desgañitaba gritando los goles, puteando a los árbitros y a los adversarios (especialmente a River, claro). Cada estrella que llegaba a Boca la mimaba, como si fuera una cláusula más del contrato.

Se convirtió en símbolo: en un programa de tv, la sección en la que entrevistaban a mujeres que van a ver fútbol se llamaba “Las Raulitos”.Murió una mañana de abril de 2008, a los 74 años. Esa tarde, en la Bombonera, el local le ganó 2 a 1 al Cruzeiro, de Brasil. Los jugadores hicieron un minuto de silencio,

llevaron un brazalete de luto y sus restos fueron velados en el estadio. Es que no era una hincha más. Era La Raulito.

Her dream was to play for Boca Juniors, major league. She even dreamed about playing for the national team. She was good, her play had quality and boldness. But María Esther Duffau had been born with the wrong body. /// When her mom died, she lived with her alcoholic, violent father, who abandoned her at a children’s home when she was 6. Soon she managed to break out and went to live in the streets. Since the street was too rough for a little girl, she broke out of María Esther and found shelter in Raulito. She walked, spoke, got into brawls, and played football like a boy. /// “I’m always escaping. I’ve been escaping since the day I was born”, said actress Marilina Ross impersonating her in the successful 1974 film “La Raulito”. /// She worked as a shoeshiner and sold newspapers. Her body and mind were fugitives and went in and out of homes, reformatories and madhouses. But her “home” was Boca Juniors. She wouldn’t miss a single match: she screamed the goals, and cursed the referees and the opponent (particularly River Plate, of course). Every new star who was signed into Boca would pamper her, as if following a contract clause. /// She became a symbol. In one TV show, there was a section in which female football fans were interviewed. The section was called “Las Raulitos”. /// She died in an April morning of 2008, at 74. That afternoon, at the Boca stadium, the local team beat Brazilian team Cruzeiro 2 to 1. The players commemorated the event with a moment of silence and wore a black armband. Her wake was held at the stadium. She was not just another fan. She was La Raulito.

Llegó el verano. Y con el verano, las vacaciones y la alegría. Hace mucho que Mar del Plata es una conocida proveedora de felicidad para las multitudes que la visitan. No por nada se la conoce como “La Feliz”. Y en el año 66 el dúo Juan y Juan la reflejaron en una canción que se grabó en la cabeza de varias generaciones: “Bailando en una Pata”. ¿Que si la canción está buena? Queda a criterio de cada uno, pero que este recuerdo es divertido y levemente bizarro, no hay quién lo niegue.

“Si supieras…” arranca diciendo el tango La Cumparcita. Si supieras todo lo que ese extraño edificio del centro montevideano guarda en su histo-ria. Sueños, tragedia, literatura y música. Con todo ese peso, está plantado justo donde la Avenida 18 de Julio desemboca en la Plaza Independencia.

El ambicioso sueño que los 3 hermanos Salvo encomendaron al arquitec-to Mario Palanti, cerró la duología con el Palacio Barolo, de Buenos Aires, del mismo arquitecto, fanático de Dante Alighieri y su Divina Comedia (de hecho integraba la logia Fede Santa, de la que el propio Dante participó). Como el Barolo, este contiene alusiones al libro y completa, con el Barolo, las 2 columnas de Hércules que Ulises cruza al final de la obra. Además conformaban un “puente” con sus faros cuyas luces, dicen, llegaban a la otra orilla. El Salvo es 5 años más joven y 5 metros más alto (105 en total). Inaugurado en 1928 fue el edificio de hormigón más alto de América por varios años.

Uno de los Salvo, Angel, falleció antes de la concreción. Otro, José, murió al ser atropellado por un auto contratado por su yerno que, apurado por cobrar la jugosa herencia, terminó ganándose un lugar en el más profundo de los círculos del infierno imaginado por el Dante.

Pero el Salvo está erigido sobre “tierra santa” para la música: en ese te-rreno se encontraba el Bar La Giralda lugar en el que se estrenó nada menos que La Cumparsita, dicen que el más famoso y más grabado de todos los tangos.

Palanti was a fan of Dante Alighieri and the Divine Comedy—he was even a member of Fede Santa, the lodge which Dante himself had been a member of. Like the Barolo building, the Salvo building also contains references to the book and, together with the Barolo, makes up the 2 Pillars of Hercules which Ullyses crosses at the end of the poem. Plus, they used to make up a “bridge” with their lighthouses, which are said each to light up the other side of the river. The Salvo building is 5 years younger, and 5 meters taller (105 m in total).
