PREFACESoutheast Asian Ministers of Education Organisation Regional Centre for Education in Science and Mathematics (SEAMEO RECSAM) is committed to nurture and enhance the quality of science, mathematics and technology education in the SEAMEO Member Countries, including Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor Leste, and Vietnam. SEAMEO RECSAM has been influential in pushing for science and mathematics education motivated by values, stimulated by change and inspired by development in the region. In conjunction with this, SEAMEO RECSAM has initiated the International Conference on Science and Mathematics Education (CoSMEd) in every two years with the purpose to provide a platform to review issues, exchange ideas and share experiences on the development of science and mathematics education at both national and international levels.

This book is the output of the 6th CoSMEd which held in Nov 2015. This book consists of 17 chapters that have been gone through thorough review and revision process. The book chapters are divided into four parts. The first part is related to pedagogical innovation in mathematics education. The discussion in Chapter 1 to Chapter 5 include the Payne-Rathmell Triangle Model with journal writing in the teaching of Geometry and Project-Based Inquiry Learning (PBIL). Meanwhile, the second part of the book is related to students’ engagement in mathematics learning. Chapter 6 focuses on students’ mathematics engagement at Malaysian boarding schools. Chapter 7 and 8 discuss students’ misconception in mental computation abilities and number sense. Meanwhile, Chapter 9 presents Malaysian and Singaporean students’ attitudes toward mathematics and their mathematics achievement. The third part of the book presents various research related to mathematics teacher education. Chapter 10 and 11 discuss mathematics teachers’ subject matter knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge. Chapter 12 and 13 present teachers’ higher order thinking skills. Chapter 14 focuses on the investigation of relationship between self-efficacy and emotional intelligence with resiliency of mathematics trainee teachers during practicum. The last part of the book is related to assessment in mathematics education. Chapter 15 demonstrates the development of an Amotivational Scale in Mathematics; Chapter 16 assesses the difficulty indices of teacher-made mathematics tests; and Chapter 17 presents the development of cognitive diagnostic assessment to assess primary pupils’ cognitive content and process skills in the learning of time.

It is hoped that the content of this book could benefit the readers in terms of new knowledge and skills towards revitalising mathematics teaching and learning culture that lead to sustainable living. The readership of this book could be extended to education stakeholders at every level, including researchers, school headmaster and principals as well as pre- and in-service teachers.
