MUM’S THE WORDMember of the Month: Perrea MartainPerrea has been a regular to Julie’s Group Power classes, powering away 35 weeks pregnant with her 2nd child. Perrea likes to stay active through her pregnancies as she says it makes them much easier. As well as coming to the gym 3 times per week she also plays hockey and walks regularly.Perrea works part time and has a 2 year old who plays in the crèche whilst she is working out. She has only put on 7Kg’s through this pregnancy with 5 weeks to go. On the morning of her last birth she said she went to the pool and was doing laps!It’s great to see our members so dedicated to their health and fitness, thanks for sharing your story Perrea!

At the beginning of the year everyone makes New Year’s resolutions, but by Valentine’s Day the majority of us have abandoned them. Winter makes it even harder to stay motivated in those colder, shorter, darker days. Everyone feels the “Winter Blues” in some way or another whether it’s the temptation to eat more, feeling lethargic and moody or catching coughs, colds and flu.

Don’t be discouraged, exercise can still be a regular part of your lifestyle no matter the season. It is as important as ever to stay fit over the winter period and keep your energy levels and mood elevated and immune system strong!

One of the major tools for staying on track is sharing the experience of exercising with others. We experience an increase of endorphins during group exercise which helps helps make working out more a pleasure than a chore. The benefits of group work have been proven through various research including one from Oxford University’s Institute of Cognitive and Evolutionary Anthropology. Their 2009 study concluded that the production of endorphins – the brain’s happy hormone – was significantly greater for people participating in group exercise than for those who exercised solo.

BLUEBERRY POWER PROTEIN MUFFINSINGREDIENTS3 eggs3 tbsp Vegetable Oil 1/4 cup Heavy Whipping Cream 5 Scoops 100% Whey Protein Powder Vanilla 2 tsp Baking Powder 1/3 cup Brown Sugar 1 cup Fresh Blueberries 1/2 cup Fat Free Cream Cheese 1/4 tsp Ground Cinnamon

DIRECTIONSPreheat oven to 190 °CLine 9 muffin tins with muffin liner cups, then give them a quick spray of non-stick cooking spray.Mix cream cheese and cinnamon into a small bowl.Mix eggs, oil and cream into a separate bowl.Add protein powder, baking powder and sugar (or sweetener) into the cream mixture, mixing thoroughly.Combine both mixtures along with the berries into the muffin tins. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until the muffins begin to brown at the top.
