TORONTO TRUE CRIME FESTIVAL ON SCREEN JUNE 14-15 The Revue is delighted to be the exclusive venue for this year’s edition of the Toronto True Crime Film Festival, a 2-day festival dedicated to true crime on the big screen and beyond. This year’s lineup includes four feature films, seven short films, and three live events. By choosing to not glamorize murderers or violent crimes for their own sake, the festival focuses mainly on victims rights and the fallout of crime that affects society on a grander scale. WE REALLY LIKE HERTHELMA AND LOUISEUSA 1994 / 129 minutes RDirected by Ridley ScottStarring Geena Davis, Susan Sarandon and Harvey KeitelIt’s the one-year anniversary or We Really Like Her! and we are celebrating by driving off into the summer sunset with our favourite outlaws/best friends, Thelma and Louise. Seriously though, this 1991 drama may be remembered for its much-parodied ending, but it was chillingly prescient, frankly confronting the ways in which toxic masculinity encourages violence (sexual and otherwise) against women and the silencing of victims. Powered by remarkable performances by Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon and an Oscar-winning script by Callie Khouri, Thelma & Louise is a timeless film that will never run out of gas. - EMILY GAGNE & DANITA STEINBERGSpecial Event: Admission $14 General; $11 Student, Seniors, Bronze Members; $10 Silver Members. EXTRAORDINARY WOMEN: LUCY MAUD MONTGOMERYShe will forever be identified with Prince Edward Island, thanks to her orphan heroine, Anne Shirley. But in fact, Lucy Maud Montgomery spent far more time in Ontario. In 1935, she moved with her then-retired minister husband from Norval, near Georgetown, to Riverside Drive in Swansea, where she lived the last years of her life. She died in 1942, deeply depressed. Much of Montgomery’s life was anything but happy,

a sad contrast to the spirit of joy and optimism of her novels. Helping us to learn more about the author of Anne of Green Gables is Mary Rubio, who wrote the comprehensive biography Lucy Maud Montgomery: The Gift of Wings. We will also be screening a short film from the Extraordinary Canadians series, with author Jane Urquhart exploring Montgomery’s life. - ELLEN MOORHOUSERevue Rental. Admission $10 on eventbrite.

DESIGNING THE MOVIESPILLOW TALKUSA, 1959 / 102minsDirected by Michael GordonStarring Doris Day, Rock Hudson, Tony Randall, and Thelma Ritter60th anniversary screening! Pillow Talk’s battle of the sexes revived the rom-com: When playboy songwriter Brad Allen (Rock Hudson) and his string of romances annoy his single career gal neighbour, interior designer Jan Morrow (Doris Day) on the telephone party line they share, he decides to woo her. Crossed wires, mistaken identity, double-entendre banter (it won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay) and hilarity ensue. Hudson and Day are clearly having a great time together. Art director Richard Riedel’s stylized glam New York set designs were nominated for an Oscar—and Day’s wardrobe by Jean Louis should have been! - NATHALIE ATKINSONPrior to the screening, series host Nathalie Atkinson in conversation with graphic designer Jeffery Smith, about 1950s stylized glam, the battle-of-the-sexes, and the rom-com revivalSpecial Event: Admission $15 General; $12 Student, Seniors, Bronze Members; $11 Silver Members. MERIDIAN CREDIT UNION - FREE SCREENINGPOLTERGEISTUSA 1982 / 120min. 14ADirected by Tobe HooperStarring Craig T. Nelson, Jo Beth Williams, Heather O’RourkeWith Poltergeist, directed by Tobe Hooper, Steven Spielberg had his first great success as a producer. Released around the same time as Spielberg’s E.T., the film presents the dark side of Spielberg’s California suburban track homes. The film centers on the Freeling family, a typical middle class family living in the peaceful Cuesta Verde Estates. The father, Steve, has fallen asleep in front of the television, and the dog saunters around the house revealing the other family members -- Steve’s wife Diane, sixteen-year-old daughter Dana, eight-year-old son Robbie, and five-year-old Carol Ann. Soon strange things begin to happen around the house; the pet canary dies, mysterious storms occur, and Carol Ann is summoned to the TV set, where a strange shaft of green light hits her and causes the room to shake (“They’re he-e-ere!”). As curious events continue, Carol Ann is repeatedly drawn to the television, where she begins to talk to “the TV people.” Soon Carol Ann is sucked into a closet, disappearing from this reality plane. Unable to find his daughter, Steve consults Dr. Lesh, a para-psychologist from a nearby college. Lesh finds that paranormal phenomena is so strong in the Freelong household she is unable to deal with it and sends for clairvoyant and professional exorcist Tangina to examine the house in hopes of finding Carol Ann. Tangina makes a horrifying discovery: Carol Ann is alive and in the house, but is being held on another spectral plane. Revue Rental: Admission is free. This screening is part of a new free film series presented by Meridian Credit Union’s Roncesvalles Branch. The film’s themes focus on life events that impact your financial wellbeing.

THE MARX BROTHERSDUCK SOUP USA 1933 / 69min. PGDirected by Leo McCareyStarring Groucho, Harpo, Chico, Zeppo, Margaret Dumont, Louis CalhernWhat’s the greatest anti-war comedy of all time? The greatest Marx Brothers movie of all time? You give up? It’s probably Duck Soup, the fourth film by The Marx Brothers. Panned upon its release, the bristling satire finally got some well-deserved respect in the 1960s when it was discovered by the anti-war crowd. It stills works today. Trust us. Following the film, we will present a Super 8 digest of an earlier Marx Bros. film, Monkey Business (1931). This digest, released to the home movie market before the advent of VCRs, is a condensed version of the feature. - ERIC VEILLETTEProgramme introduced by Toronto’s favourite son, Will Sloan.Special Event: Admission $14 General; $11 Student, Seniors, Bronze Members; $10 Silver Members. The savage and tender extremes of SWANS told with unprecedented access to the band as well as never before seen archive material and interviews documenting their 35-year career. Beautiful. Brutal. Uncompromising. Where Does a Body End? is a intimate portrait of the band SWANS and its leader Michael Gira, from their roots as a brutal, confrontational post-punk band that emerged from the same early 1980s era NYC that gave us Sonic Youth (and, somehow, Madonna) through their ill-fated bid at mainstream success in the 90s indie-rock gold-rush, through breakups and chaos (on and offstage) to their odds-defying current status as one of the most accomplished and ambitious bands in the world, one whose concerts are more like ecstatic rituals than nostalgic trips back through their most popular songs.Revue Rental: Admission $12.00.
