    1. CONFIGURATION

    Frequency hopping (FH), Antenna hopping (AH) and Intelligent Downlink Diversity (IDD)related cases were performed under Kutoja (10) and Suosaari (20) BCFs between 26thand29thof July 2004. UltraSite BTSs with X-polarized antennas were used. Each sectorconsisted of two EDGE TRXs connected to a single X-polarized antenna. During testingsome NTN sites or TRXs were blocked to get more channels available for hopping lists.Also Steri BTS 2 (31) and Mkkyl BCF (40) are blocked to avoid calls to be handed overto BTSs that do not have the features under test activated. A detailed description of thesettings can be found from BSS Parameters for SyVe Testing Features document. Thesettings for each configuration are described also in the following Excel sheet. In case thereis a conflict between BSS Parameters for SyVe Testing Features document and the Excelsheet the Excel shows the right setting. The BSC software in use was S11 with CDs 1.0,

    1.1 and 1.2. The BTS software in use was CX 4.0-2.

    During testing five different static locations are used. These locations are refered as Stop1,Stop2, Stop3, Stop4 and Stop5. The locations are selected so that different input levels areused during testing. Locations are shown in the figure below (Note that the tch channels inthe fiqure are not the ones that are used in these tests! The correct channels can be foundfrom the configuration Excel sheet.)

    Tests are performed according to the following BSS SyVe test cases:

    During testing the experienced signal quality is measured with TEMS. RXLevel, BER (BitError Ratio), FER (Frame Erasure Ratio), RXQuality and SQI (Speech Quality Index)values are recorded along with other performance indicators.

    In addition to the test cases all cases that use RF hopping are done with both cyclic andrandom hopping patterns (HSN1=0 and HSN1=1). During testing the network conditionsare logged with TEMS while having an EFR call on. From the log files a report is createdusing the following report template. The channels that the calls were on at eachmeasurement point are shown in the same tables that show data throughput results.

    Package

    During testing also EDGE data transmission was on and the RLC and applicationthroughputs using 4 slot transmission were recorded with Application tester. The reportedvalues are averaged ovet 10 minutes at each measurement point. Data was downloadedfrom a Linux FTP server in 1 MB files.

    The weather was recorded during each test round and can be seen from table below.

    2. CONCLUSIONS

    In this chapter the measurement results are analyzed on a general level. Detailedmeasurement results can be found in the following two chapters.

    In EDGE data transmission there were no big differencies in the throughput values. Thethroughput values are approximations of the average throughput in each test situation. Abetter way to estimate the effect each feature has on EDGE performance might be toanalyze MCS distributions during each stop. Anyhow this was not possible at the time thetests occurred.

    The TEMS reports showed better the differences in performance between differentfeatures. In measurement points 4 and 5 there was no noticeable difference in performance

    between test rounds. In those measurement points the input level was most of the timebetween 60 dBm and 70 dBm, so the signal quality was excellent in all the cases.

    In measurement point 1 (input level worse than 85 bDm) there was not much difference inthe BER or FER values between different features. The RXQuality values were clearlybetter in cases where antenna hopping with frequency hopping or IDD were activated.Antenna hopping alone seemed to work a bit better than frequency hopping alone. In theSQI values the differences were even clearer. Frequency hopping alone improved theperformance in one of the cases (with HSN1=1). Antenna hopping and IDD improved theperformance clearly. Activating frequency hopping in addition to antenna hopping did notimprove the situation compared to antenna hopping alone.

    In measurement points 2 and 3 (input level around -80 dBm) there was clear improvementin FER values in with all features. In the BER values the difference to the baseline was notthat clear. The RXQuality values were also clearly better than with the baseline. With IDDactivated the RXQuality values were highest. Antenna hopping alone did not help as muchas frequency hopping and activating antenna hopping in addition to frequency hopping didnot improve the performance. Still antenna hopping alone was clearly better than nohopping at all. Antenna hopping or frequency hopping alone impeoved the SQI valuesclearly compared to the baseline. With IDD or both antenna hopping and frequencyhopping activated the SQI values were all the better.

    During the drives between measurement points there were not noticeable difference in theBER values between test rounds. The FER values in cases where IDD or both antenna

    hopping and frequency hopping were activated were a bit better than in the rest of thecases. The RXQuality and SQI values improved a bit with activating antenna hopping orfrequency hopping. Activating both of the features improved the situation almost to thesame level as with the IDD feature.
