Hip hop artist. Spoken word poet. Philanthropist. Advocate. Shawn Elliot strives to use whatever cre-ative talent he has to give back to the community. From upbeat music to downtempo songs that talk about life and it's struggles, Shawn Elliot is a diverse artist that refuses Elliot is a diverse artist that refuses to be connned by the preconceived notions of what hip hop should be.
Treating others how I'd like to be treated is also a concept of my music. It's time for something dif-ferent instead of rapping about what everyone else is rapping about. That's how the concept of V.N.B. (Valley's New Breed) came to be, and it'll always be came to be, and it'll always be progression. I don't know if I'm on the right path, but the journey is long, and I'm loving every step of it. I'll continue to make music as long as people want to hear it and I'll continue to better myself as an artist and a person. Things can artist and a person. Things can be changed as long as you want to change them. Be a part of the positive impact!

A second performance of the legendary Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán – widely hailed as “El Mejor Mariachi del Mundo” – has been added to the Signature Series at The Arts Center at The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College.
Mariachi Vargas is scheduled for two performances at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26. Tickets for the two concerts may be pur-chased online at utb.edu/artscenter or by calling 956-UTB-TKTS, 956-882-8587.
“This quickly became two concerts in answer to enthusiastic public demands,” said Dr. Dan Barnard, Director of The Arts Center. “We are thrilled to help bring the most famous and popular mariachi group in the world to Brownsville for the 75th anniversary of Charro Days.”
Opening for Mariachi Vargas will be the first place winners of the elementary, middle school and high school categories of San Antonio’s 17th Annual Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza mariachi group competitions, which took place in December. The audience will also have an opportunity to see phenomenal performances from two student mariachi groups from Rio Grande City, Mariachi Juvenil de America from Veterans Middle School and Mariachi Cascabel from Rio Grande City High School. Each won first place in their respective categories for the second consecutive year.
Created in 1897 by Don Gaspar Vargas in the Mexican village of Tecalitlán, Mariachi Vargas has maintained and enhanced the musi-cal traditions of this classic genre through five generations, while growing its popularity far and wide. Since 1937, Mariachi Vargas has been featured in over 200 movies, including several with famed Mexican film star and singer Pedro Infante. The group has pro-duced over 200 recordings of the Huastecos sones, waltzes, popurris, polkas, huapango and cumbias that all contribute to Mexico’s most distinctive sound. Mariachi Vargas members create their music with a combination of violins, trumpets, harps, a guitarrón, guitar and vihuela.
The group appeared with Linda Ronstadt at the Tucson International Mariachi Conference in 1986, where she made her Spanish-language singing public debut. The next year, she released her Grammy award-winning album “Canciones de mi Padre,” or “Songs of My Father,” also featuring Mariachi Vargas. Her national tour with the group helped attract new audiences and contributed to a resurgence of interest in mariachi across the continent.
“We are excited to bring Mariachi Vargas to Brownsville and we invite the public to join us as we celebrate this milestone in Charro Days history,” said Ken Lieck, President of the Charro Days Association. “A performance by this renowned group is in keeping with Charro Days’ long history of bringing headline performers to Brownsville.”
The Charro Days festivities take place February 19-26. The annual weeklong festival includes parades, dance festivals and celebrates the culture and friendship of the cities of Brownsville and Matamoros, Mexico. The Signature Series is celebrating its second season at The Arts Center. After a successful inaugural run, this year’s series promises both diversity and the same dedication to excellence that patrons have come to expect.

The almost entirely upbeat El Camino is a change of pace from 2010’s Broth-ers which featured many slow-tempo songs which apparently proved more difficult to perform in a live setting. Generally less bluesy than previous re-leases, this album will undoubtedly appeal to an even larger audience than the band has already captured. The complexity of their recent studio re-cordings greatly contrasts the raw, simplistic guitar and drums combo from early albums. Auerbach and Carney have filled out their sound and are now touring with a bassist and keyboardist. The album leads in with it’s first single, Lonely Boy, a song popularized by the single-take music video that features a man lip singing and throwing down some nifty little dance moves. Until Auerbach starts singing, you could swear that you’re listening to Dick Dale. El Camino reaches it’s pinnacle midway through the album with Run Right Back. It’s screaming slide guitar and heavy-on-the-drive riffs meld nicely with Auerbach’s lyrics, “She’s the worst thing I’ve been addicted to...” For better or worse, The Black Keys have modified and developed their sound, which is inevitable for any successful act. You could fight it, but it’s much easier to embrace the change, live in the now, and just listen to the old tracks when you feel nostalgic.
Lyrically, this album is the darkest, most honest and straight-forward the band has ever been. And who can blame them? Starting with the disastrous fallout between them, to the death of longtime producer/friend Jerry Finn, to the near-death experience of Barker-- they’ve been through a hell of a lot in the past decade. The great thing about this album is that there is some-thing on there for everyone to enjoy. There are songs that are reminiscent of their early work, and songs that reflect what these musicians have been ex-perimenting with lately. Overall, ‘Neighborhoods’ is more than just an album consisting of one random song after another. It’s a journey that really lets us know what these three musicians have been up to and what tragedies and turbulences they’ve had to overcome. At the same time though, it’s fun, weird, and dare I say… epic?
Hackneyed comparisons to Oasis seem increasingly spurious with each new piece added to Kasabian’s puzzle. The farrago of genres on Velocirap-tor! (punctuation warranted) seems to be a microcosm of their entire dis-cography: each new track redefines the group while simultaneously cor-roborating the sum of it’s preceding works. The opening track, ‘Let’s Roll Just Like We Used To,’ wastes no time picking up where West Pauper Rider Lunatic Asylum left off, and establishes the cinematic fusion of East and West (gi-ant gong meets ominous trumpet section) that appears to be the album’s motif. Velociraptor! flows more smoothly than any other Kasabian record, and contains a healthy balance of poppy crowd pleasers. Whether they’ve been unable to choose a specific audience, or stubbornly refuse the trite proposition that such a choice must be made, their musical eclecticism has yet to undermine their album sales in the UK, where it debuted at number one. Unfortunately for Kasabian, the same cannot be said for the US, where they’re yet to crack the Billboard top 200.
With smooth sounds of rock, pop and tropocalia, it’s hard to place Holiday’s unique sound in a specific genre. This fresh new local band coming out of Austin, Texas, has kept its audiences very entertained. The release of their debut album, “Things Can Be Different” off of Austin’s own Township Records has created some great hype. Vocalists Joaquin McHale and Maggie Ley-enberger generate smooth grooves that make each track both breezy and beautiful. The opening song, “Graciela” is such a lovely track that really sticks. Other tracks such as “She Don’t” and “Come Into My Room” have a more upbeat rhythm that can keep you singing along and on your feet. Don’t miss out on any opportunity to watch these guys perform, catch ‘em live and you will be in for a treat.
