region, and conducted by an experienced e-learning project manager/nurse educator.
The aim of this project:
The training proposed under this project will address the need for accessible and affordable continuing professional development for the rural and regional health workforce. Increasing the capacity for local health educators and managers to develop interactive on-line presentations will improve access to a variety of CPD topics for a broad range of health disciplines. Once rural health services identify their own particular learning needs, this module will provide them with the capacity to develop interactive on-line learning modules according to identified priority areas. The training described in this proposal has been established as a priority for health services across the
Loddon Mallee region of Victoria. Approximately 80 allied health and nursing educators and
managers in rural health services across the Loddon Mallee region will participate in the project
activities.
The project activities include:
The on-line module will include: an instructional video, animation, narration and formative
assessment slides throughout the module to test the learner's understanding of content before
progressing to the next topic. Participants will be introduced to the module through a specific
communications and marketing strategy. They will complete the on-line module and will be invited to
participate in a face to face workshop where their learnings will be translated into practice. Two face-
to-face workshops will be conducted, in the north and south of the region, and participants will have
the opportunity to bring along their own projects to work on.

The aim of this project is to up-skill general practitioners, psychologists, dietitians and other allied
health staff who come into contact with or treat clients who have an eating disorder. Eating disorders
are a group of complex mental health disorders (anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating
disorder and eating disorders not otherwise specified) which are difficult to treat and require a multi-
professional team based approach in order to maximise positive patient outcomes. The triad
approach to care is recommended by current expert consensus for the treatment of eating disorder
clients. The triad approach requires input from a multidisciplinary team consisting of a psychologist or
other mental health professional, dietitian and medical professionals working to provide consistent
and complementary team based care.
The project activities include:
Participants will be able to attend an inter-professional workshop as an introduction to the key topics
of eating disorders, body image and disordered eating and will cover the key concepts required to
develop an understanding of eating disorders, their prevention, identification and treatment.
The self-directed learning component of the program will then be available for those who are
interested in developing a more in-depth understanding of eating disorders. The self-directed
program consists of five modules which participants work on over 10 weeks with online or email
support. The five modules consist of:
1) Disordered eating, identification and screening,
2) Assessment,
3) Management in inpatient and community settings,
4) Caring for carers and health professionals, and
5) Interdisciplinary teamwork and local networks.
The workbook is accompanied by a CD-ROM that contains interactive activities and video material.
The video materials include: personal stories by eating disorder sufferers, presentations by experts
about key diagnostic and treatment perspectives and panel discussions by experts about case studies
provided in the workbook.

ORGANISATION Australian Association of Social Workers
PROJECT TYPE Continuing Professional Development
PROJECT DURATION 20 December 2013 to 30 September 2014
TARGET AUDIENCE Social Workers
DESCRIPTION The project has as its key goal to identify, develop and deliver a high quality online CPD
program which particularly responds to the needs of remote and rural social workers in NSW. The
Training Needs Analysis survey of over 100 rural and remote mental health social workers in NSW has
identified two major areas of mental health practice that they consider of high importance for CPD.

adds to our catalogue of relevant social work topics and responds to identified training needs.
The project activities: The content of the CPD program will be developed around the two identified
areas of mental health practice from the training needs analysis survey. The content will be developed
in collaboration with the portfolio of Education and Knowledge Development of the AASW, an
identified subject matter expert (SME) and other relevant stakeholders within the AASW.
The Training Needs Analysis delivered as a basis for the CPD program is based upon the UK model
Hennessy-Hicks Training Needs Assessment Instrument. This instrument has been developed
specifically for use within the health care discipline.
The content on depression and suicide and substance abuse disorders will be presented by:
Video presentation: the basis of the CPD module will be two video presentations which
participants will view and complete other associated learning tasks.
Text based learning: a range of text based resources will be provided. Activities will include
reviewing case studies, reading journal articles and associated professional reading.

98. CLINICAL HYPNOSIS TRAINING FOR CLINICAL, COUNSELLING &HEALTH PSYCHOLOGISTS (ID 153-5)
ORGANISATION Roslyn Martin Psychologist
PROJECT TYPE Continuing Professional Development
PROJECT DURATION 22nd March 2014 to 24th October 2014
TARGET AUDIENCE Psychologists
DESCRIPTION: to provide funds to support a Psychologist to undertake a Clinical Hypnosis Training Course (CHTC), which is run by Hypnosis Training Australia, in conjunction with CPM Training and Counselling. This training is the only clinical hypnosis training course that is developed and taught by Psychologists and Medical Practitioners, exclusively for Psychologists and Medical Practitioners. Clients living in regional or rural Australia tend to have limited options available to access psychological services and sessions are often time limited. Research indicates that the addition of hypnotic techniques alongside other psychological interventions increases the efficacy and/or efficiency of these interventions. Yet, a limited number of psychologists possess the training to offer this technique, particularly to rural and remote clients who could benefit from this clinical intervention.
The aim of this project is to: provide training for a Psychologist to gain the theory and practical skills
to use hypnotic techniques as part of treatment plans for clients. There is much research which
supports the efficacy of hypnosis as an adjunct to a range of psychological approaches such as
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. It is a technique that can be effectively incorporated to treat a range of
psychological disorders, including: anxiety disorders, depression, PTSD, trauma, pain management,
sleep disorders, stress control, fears and phobias as well as enhancing self-esteem and motivation. It is
a powerful psychological method for mental and physical relaxation, yet training in this technique is
only acquired by undertaking private CPD.
The project activities include:
6 hours of required pre-reading.
4 days of didactic teaching which involves: demonstrations, structured activities, small group practice and discussion.
4 days of didactic teaching which involves: case discussion, script writing, role plays and small
group practice to learn how to apply hypnosis to clinical casework.
2 x Follow up Peer Consultation and Case Presentation discussion days, which involves: didactic refresher sessions, demonstrations, small group practice/discussion and post-training commentary
on a case history presentation made by each participant to a peer panel of assessors.
The major learning outcomes include:
Understanding the major theories and clinical applications of hypnotic techniques.
Recognising and describing the suitability of specific hypnotic techniques with a range of psychiatric and psychological disorders (and the contraindications based on unsuitability of the client and presenting psychopathology).
Learning the practical skills of inducing, assessing and de-inducing a hypnotic state.
Being able to write hypnotic scripts for specific clients, being aware of any difficulties and how to safely treat the client.
Completing the course and begin to use hypnotic techniques with clients to maximise treatment programs.

PROJECT DURATION 30th March 2014 to 30 September 2014
TARGET AUDIENCE Physiotherapists, Podiatrists, Psychologists, Credentialled Diabetic Educator,
Social Workers and Pharmacists
DESCRIPTION Caring for our Colleagues (CFOC) will improve access to a specific continuing
professional development program for health professionals working in rural and remote general
practice. This project will build on the successful and accredited Doctors for Doctors (D4D) CPD
program, developed and implemented by Doctors’ Health SA (DHSA), adapting it for:
the multidisciplinary team of health professionals working in rural and remote general
practice – GPs (including OTDs) nurses and allied health professionals.
a variety of adult learning modalities: Inter-professional learning , face to face, modular
online, teleconferencing and Problem-Based Learning (PBL).
The aim of this project is to: trial the delivery of the modified Doctors for Doctors (D4D) CPD program
in three rural and remote general practices located in ASGC-RA 4-5.
Practices will be recruited to the program based on having at least 3 different health care professionals
working at the same site: GPs, nurses and allied health professionals.
Six hours of education will occur in each of the three practices selected and will be specific to the needs
of each practice involved. A comprehensive evaluation process will inform the future development and
applicability of this project for:
national application to rural and remote general practice settings.
larger and smaller multidisciplinary teams working together - at one site or virtually.
The project objectives, to:
1. improve access to specific CPD for treating other health professional colleagues in rural and
remote settings;
2. provide a CPD program that is relevant and specific for the needs of rural and remote health
practitioners, is multidisciplinary and incorporates the principles of IPL;

101. MANAGEMENT OF DEPRESSION EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOPS FOR RURAL HEALTH
PROFESSIONALS (ID 163-5)
ORGANISATION Black Dog Institute, Prince of Wales Hospital NSW
PROJECT TYPE Continuing Professional Development, Multi-disciplinary Team training,
Inter-Professional Learning
PROJECT DURATION 1st January 2014 to 20th October 2014
TARGET AUDIENCE General Practitioners, Allied Health Professionals, Psychologists, Social
Workers, Mental Health Nurses, Aboriginal Health Practitioners/Workers
DESCRIPTION: Caring for the mental health of the population in remote and rural areas can be
particularly challenging. Studies have pointed to higher levels of psychological distress and risk of
suicide in non-urban areas coupled with a relative lack of suitably trained health professionals and
services.
The aim of this project is to: increase the skill and confidence of health professionals working in rural
or remote settings in diagnosing and managing depression and suicidality and improving knowledge of
resources and referral services available to assist them in caring for this patient group. The
multidisciplinary nature of the workshops will also strengthen the communication and working
relationships between the various health professionals involved in the health care of their local
community.
The project activities: This project proposes to deliver 6 hour face to face educational workshops to
general practitioners, psychologists, social workers, mental health nurses and Aboriginal health
workers practising in rural and remote areas of Australia. The workshops will provide training in the
management of depression including correctly identifying depression, assessing and managing risk of
harm and suicidality, and treatment planning including both pharmacological and non-pharmacological
interventions.
The workshops will be preceded by an online one hour interactive predisposing activity, to be
completed in participant’s own time, outlining the key features of depression and correctly diagnosing
clinical depression including sub-types. The workshop itself involves extensive discussion and group
work based on filmed case studies and role plays. This enables practice of the core skills taught in the
program in a simulated manner, building confidence to then utilise these skills in a clinical setting. Inter
professional learning is facilitated through the emphasis on discussion and small group activities. The
workshop will be modelled on our existing foundation program "Dealing with Depression".
The program will be adapted to meet the unique learning needs of each multidisciplinary group
working in a remote and rural setting.
The existing program will be modified to reflect remote and rural issues within the case studies,
identifying stressors that are unique to living in regional Australia. This will incorporate specific
knowledge, skills and attitudes to those practitioners working in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander health settings. The realities of treatment planning in remote and rural areas will also be
acknowledged, incorporating new resources that have become available in recent years as a way of
manoeuvring through some of the accepted limitations in services.
