82. ONLINE REMOTE XRAY OPERATORS COURSE (ID 50-5)

ORGANISATION University of Newcastle Department of Rural Health

PROJECT TYPE Continuing Professional Development, Inter-professional Learning

PROJECT DURATION December 2013 to November 2014

TARGET AUDIENCE Radiographers, General Practitioners, Nurses and Midwives

DESCRIPTION Remote X-ray Operator Licensing online Course - This will be based on the course that currently exists in NSW and is delivered as a continuing education opportunity for RNs and GPs in ASGC RA3-5 regions where no radiographers are available (Smith & McKiernan 2004). Successful completion of the course is required to be eligible for a limited x-ray licence under the NSW Radiation Control Act. Limited X-ray Licence Refresher - After completion of the licensing course and being licensed to perform radiography under specified conditions there is need for licensees to do some form of continuing education in order to maintain their knowledge and skills in performing radiography examinations. It is proposed that, as part of this project, all limited x-ray licence holders in NSW, Victoria and Queensland will be given access to the relevant part of the MRLO website via a unique login. This unique login will permit all licence holders access to the core materials of the NSW Remote X-ray Licensing Course, with the exception of assessment items used for the NSW licensing test.

The aim of this project: The main activity to be undertaken as part of this project will be the

redevelopment of existing NSW educational materials into a format appropriate for web-based

delivery.

The project objectives:

1. Be able to access a flexible teaching and learning environment that is specific to the needs of limited licence remote x-ray operators to enhance their knowledge, skills and abilities in performing plain radiography examinations according to their licence conditions.

2. Have access to up-to-date information about the use of general radiography imaging equipment and techniques in a rural and remote context

3. Develop their understanding of the quality use of diagnostic imaging and best practice in general radiography, thus improving the quality and safety of the general radiography examinations they perform.

4. Have opportunities to share knowledge with radiographers and other limited licence remote x-ray operators about radiography, thus strengthening inter-professional collaboration and teamwork.

ORGANISATION Bendigo Health

PROJECT TYPE Continuing Professional Development, Inter-professional Learning

PROJECT DURATION 1st December 2013 to 30th September 2014

TARGET AUDIENCE Allied Health Professionals & Nurses, rural & regional educators & trainers

DESCRIPTION

Funding the development of "Creating Content for On-line Learning : A Guide for Managers and

Educators on how to develop content for digital delivery " . The purpose of this module is to assist

regional and rural educators and trainers to plan for, and identify the necessary resources required to

create digital interactive on-line presentations. The module will be complemented by 2 face to face

learning sessions, open to health professionals across the 19 health services in the Loddon Mallee

region, and conducted by an experienced e-learning project manager/nurse educator.

The aim of this project:

The training proposed under this project will address the need for accessible and affordable continuing professional development for the rural and regional health workforce. Increasing the capacity for local health educators and managers to develop interactive on-line presentations will improve access to a variety of CPD topics for a broad range of health disciplines. Once rural health services identify their own particular learning needs, this module will provide them with the capacity to develop interactive on-line learning modules according to identified priority areas. The training described in this proposal has been established as a priority for health services across the

Loddon Mallee region of Victoria. Approximately 80 allied health and nursing educators and

managers in rural health services across the Loddon Mallee region will participate in the project

activities.

The project activities include:

The on-line module will include: an instructional video, animation, narration and formative

assessment slides throughout the module to test the learner's understanding of content before

progressing to the next topic. Participants will be introduced to the module through a specific

communications and marketing strategy. They will complete the on-line module and will be invited to

participate in a face to face workshop where their learnings will be translated into practice. Two face-

to-face workshops will be conducted, in the north and south of the region, and participants will have

the opportunity to bring along their own projects to work on.

84. NOURISHING NETWORKS PROGRAM (ID 58-5)

ORGANISATION University of Newcastle Department of Rural Health Tamworth NSW

PROJECT TYPE Continuing Professional Development, Multi-disciplinary Team, Inter-

professional Learning

PROJECT DURATION 1st December 2013 to 30th September 2014

TARGET AUDIENCE Dietitians, Psychologists, Social Workers, other Allied Health Professionals

interested in treating eating disorders, General Practitioners, nurses &

midwives

DESCRIPTION: Funding will be used to develop and deliver the Nourishing Networks package which consists of a workbook, CD-ROM with supporting materials and practical activities for participants. The Nourishing Networks program combines inter-disciplinary workshop based training with a 10 week self-directed learning and mentoring program to up-skill rural based health professionals (particularly general practitioners, psychologists, dietitians and other allied health staff) who care for clients with eating disorders. The aim of this project is to up-skill general practitioners, psychologists, dietitians and other allied

health staff who come into contact with or treat clients who have an eating disorder. Eating disorders

are a group of complex mental health disorders (anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating

disorder and eating disorders not otherwise specified) which are difficult to treat and require a multi-

professional team based approach in order to maximise positive patient outcomes. The triad

approach to care is recommended by current expert consensus for the treatment of eating disorder

clients. The triad approach requires input from a multidisciplinary team consisting of a psychologist or

other mental health professional, dietitian and medical professionals working to provide consistent

and complementary team based care.

The project activities include:

Participants will be able to attend an inter-professional workshop as an introduction to the key topics

of eating disorders, body image and disordered eating and will cover the key concepts required to

develop an understanding of eating disorders, their prevention, identification and treatment.

The self-directed learning component of the program will then be available for those who are

interested in developing a more in-depth understanding of eating disorders. The self-directed

program consists of five modules which participants work on over 10 weeks with online or email

support. The five modules consist of:

1) Disordered eating, identification and screening,

2) Assessment,

3) Management in inpatient and community settings,

4) Caring for carers and health professionals, and

5) Interdisciplinary teamwork and local networks.

The workbook is accompanied by a CD-ROM that contains interactive activities and video material.

The video materials include: personal stories by eating disorder sufferers, presentations by experts

about key diagnostic and treatment perspectives and panel discussions by experts about case studies

provided in the workbook.

86. WEB CONFERENCES FOR DIETITIANS ON NUTRITION AND DISABILITY CARE (ID 89-5)

ORGANISATION Dietitians Association of Australia ACT

PROJECT TYPE Continuing Professional Development

PROJECT DURATION 2nd February 2014 to 6th February 2014

TARGET AUDIENCE Dietitians

DESCRIPTION Funding for 2 to 3 x one hour web conferences which will be presented to introduce rural and regional dietitians to nutrition and disability care and to apply the tools in case studies of individual case management or relevant community nutrition. Dietitians need to be aware of appropriate nutritional assessment, anthropometry standards and nutritional intervention recommendations for people with disabilities. Topics that will also need to be addressed include working with texture modified diets/dysphagia, tube feeding, meeting nutrition requirements in low caloric requirements.

The aim of this project: With Disability Care funding (formerly NDIS) this has emerged as an

important practice area for health professionals. Dietitians with limited experience may not apply

appropriate assessment, services and interventions for this population. Disability care requires

nutritional assessment using non-standard assessment criteria and this needs to be communicated to

all dietitians who work with this population in all parts of Australia.

The project activities will be focused on delivery of web conferences to deliver continuing education

around disability care. We will identify presenters to prepare and deliver content with a case study

format, with content to consolidate the content delivery; set up dates, registration and access

arrangements for participants; prepare pre and post surveys as part of the evaluation plan; arrange

conversion of the web conference to a presentation for hosting on the DAA website. The web

conferences will be accessible remotely by telephone and computer in real time, and as a recording it

will be accessible 24/7 through the internet for a period of 12 months.

98. CLINICAL HYPNOSIS TRAINING FOR CLINICAL, COUNSELLING &HEALTH PSYCHOLOGISTS (ID 153-5)

ORGANISATION Roslyn Martin Psychologist

PROJECT TYPE Continuing Professional Development

PROJECT DURATION 22nd March 2014 to 24th October 2014

TARGET AUDIENCE Psychologists

DESCRIPTION: to provide funds to support a Psychologist to undertake a Clinical Hypnosis Training Course (CHTC), which is run by Hypnosis Training Australia, in conjunction with CPM Training and Counselling. This training is the only clinical hypnosis training course that is developed and taught by Psychologists and Medical Practitioners, exclusively for Psychologists and Medical Practitioners. Clients living in regional or rural Australia tend to have limited options available to access psychological services and sessions are often time limited. Research indicates that the addition of hypnotic techniques alongside other psychological interventions increases the efficacy and/or efficiency of these interventions. Yet, a limited number of psychologists possess the training to offer this technique, particularly to rural and remote clients who could benefit from this clinical intervention.

The aim of this project is to: provide training for a Psychologist to gain the theory and practical skills

to use hypnotic techniques as part of treatment plans for clients. There is much research which

supports the efficacy of hypnosis as an adjunct to a range of psychological approaches such as

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. It is a technique that can be effectively incorporated to treat a range of

psychological disorders, including: anxiety disorders, depression, PTSD, trauma, pain management,

sleep disorders, stress control, fears and phobias as well as enhancing self-esteem and motivation. It is

a powerful psychological method for mental and physical relaxation, yet training in this technique is

only acquired by undertaking private CPD.

The project activities include:

6 hours of required pre-reading.

4 days of didactic teaching which involves: demonstrations, structured activities, small group practice and discussion.

4 days of didactic teaching which involves: case discussion, script writing, role plays and small

101. MANAGEMENT OF DEPRESSION EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOPS FOR RURAL HEALTH

PROFESSIONALS (ID 163-5)

ORGANISATION Black Dog Institute, Prince of Wales Hospital NSW

PROJECT TYPE Continuing Professional Development, Multi-disciplinary Team training,

Inter-Professional Learning

PROJECT DURATION 1st January 2014 to 20th October 2014

TARGET AUDIENCE General Practitioners, Allied Health Professionals, Psychologists, Social

Workers, Mental Health Nurses, Aboriginal Health Practitioners/Workers

DESCRIPTION: Caring for the mental health of the population in remote and rural areas can be

particularly challenging. Studies have pointed to higher levels of psychological distress and risk of

suicide in non-urban areas coupled with a relative lack of suitably trained health professionals and

services.

The aim of this project is to: increase the skill and confidence of health professionals working in rural

or remote settings in diagnosing and managing depression and suicidality and improving knowledge of

resources and referral services available to assist them in caring for this patient group. The

multidisciplinary nature of the workshops will also strengthen the communication and working

relationships between the various health professionals involved in the health care of their local

community.

The project activities: This project proposes to deliver 6 hour face to face educational workshops to

general practitioners, psychologists, social workers, mental health nurses and Aboriginal health

workers practising in rural and remote areas of Australia. The workshops will provide training in the

management of depression including correctly identifying depression, assessing and managing risk of

harm and suicidality, and treatment planning including both pharmacological and non-pharmacological

interventions.

The workshops will be preceded by an online one hour interactive predisposing activity, to be

completed in participant’s own time, outlining the key features of depression and correctly diagnosing

clinical depression including sub-types. The workshop itself involves extensive discussion and group

work based on filmed case studies and role plays. This enables practice of the core skills taught in the

program in a simulated manner, building confidence to then utilise these skills in a clinical setting. Inter

professional learning is facilitated through the emphasis on discussion and small group activities. The

workshop will be modelled on our existing foundation program "Dealing with Depression".

The program will be adapted to meet the unique learning needs of each multidisciplinary group

Page 24: RHCE2 ROUND FIVE PROJECTS 2013-14 as at 20 DECEMBER 2013 › rhce2 › files › RHCE2... · RHCE2 ROUND FIVE PROJECTS 2013-14 as at 20th DECEMBER 2013 ... EXERCISE AND CANCER MANAGEMENT

working in a remote and rural setting.

The existing program will be modified to reflect remote and rural issues within the case studies,

identifying stressors that are unique to living in regional Australia. This will incorporate specific

knowledge, skills and attitudes to those practitioners working in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait

Islander health settings. The realities of treatment planning in remote and rural areas will also be

acknowledged, incorporating new resources that have become available in recent years as a way of

manoeuvring through some of the accepted limitations in services.
