It was a cool crisp autumn morning on October 27, 2018, perfect for the opening day of youth season. Michael Gallaher and his nine year old son Dean are anxiously waiting the hunt.

We arrived in darkness to the field I had picked out, named T1. After parking quite a distance away because of continuous rains over the past three weeks, the three of us climbed into the deer blind. Soon we saw six doe appear at the feeder. After watching them hoping a buck would arrive, the doe disappeared upon the arrival of a huge yellow coyote. It too left with the arrival of a huge hog. Dean thought about shooting the hog but decided to wait hoping a buck would show.

Then about 8:25, a nice mature, 9 point buck appears to our right. This was the deer we were hoping to see. Dean raised up his 243 rifle with heart beating loudly, and then took the 80 yard shot. Deer went down immediately.

Dean and dad Michael were very excited. We promptly tagged the deer and headed back to camp, another successful hunt at the Rhodes Ranch in Palo Pinto County.

Choronga SafarisGrowing up in Texas, I dreamed of Africa. As a kid I was always reading books about the golden age of African Safaris and the great white hunters. I would go to Safari shows and talk to all the outfitters and decided that for my first trip, I wanted to hunt plains game and make the most of my money. When I met Evan Sloan at the SCFW Wild Game Dinner, I knew this is who I wanted to take me. When I won the live auction for the 10-day plains game hunt with Choronga, I was pumped. I went home and told my wife to pack! After the shock subsided and she found out we’d be going to South Africa and flying into Johannesburg – She decided to tack on a few extra days in Cape Town.

We met with Evan and his wife Mia a few more times the following year and became fast friends. Evan knew my father had given me a double rifle, that up to that point, had not been hunted with. He knew I was fired up about Africa, and knew the books I’d read and the other hunts I’d been on and suggested that I train with that rifle and plan on going open sights. I loved the idea, I found an expert to teach me and build rounds for my 470 NE, and I spent the next year dreaming and getting ready to go. I had a lot to do and high expectations for this trip. Evan made the whole thing so easy, we communicated about dates, booked some flights and it was on. The next thing I knew I was on a plane to Johannesburg, I had landed and was picked up and escorted thoroughly and swiftly through customs and gun checks with one of Evan’s PH’s.

What happened next is still like a dream. We spent the next 10 days spotting and stalking some of the greatest trophies you could ever imagine. The majority of our time was spent along the Limpopo River. Hunting with Evan and his professional hunters was one of the greatest experiences of my life. As a first timer in Africa,

I was eager to shoot and very excited but the PH’s knew better. We had a 100% success rate on the animals included in the SCFW hunt, and they were better than advertised! The chef that prepared our food every night (and morning) was first-class and in almost all cases we were able to eat what we killed that day or the day before. We were very happy with our accommodations, our guides, our PH’s and especially Evan and Mia.

After the hunt, they took us to a small airport close to the hunting lodge where we hopped on a short flight to Cape Town. We were able to finish our hunt with a few days of wine tastings and exploring one of the coolest cities I’ve spent time in. We had a great time over there thanks for Choronga Safaris and the Sportsmen’s Club of Fort Worth.

Fort Worth Young LifeThe Sportsmen’s Club of Fort Worth has generously sponsored Fort Worth Young Life’s Kid’s Clay Shoot for many years. Throughout the years this sponsorship has introduced literally thousands of young men and women to firearms and the outdoors. Most of these students come from disadvantaged urban neighborhoods. These young people rarely get the opportunity to get outdoors and the vast majority of them have never shot sporting clays. This year roughly 300 students from Fort Worth learned how to respect guns and not fear them. They learned the rules of gun safety. They learned how to properly handle a shotgun and many of them broke their first clay. The excitement and joy that engulfs young person’s face when they connect with their target for the first time is indescribable. The Sportsmen’s Club of Fort Worth is responsible for these smiles and experiences in the outdoors. The sponsorship provides the shells and the shotguns for this event, as well as a warm meal for the students. Some of these students are not able to eat three square meals a day, as such the Sportsmen’s Club is not only providing a safe and new experience in the outdoors, but the organization is also providing for the physical needs of these students. Any left over shells from the event are used by Fort Worth Young Life throughout the year to take students to the shooting range and on dove hunts. The staff of Fort Worth Young Life and the students involved with the shoot, would like to thank the Sportsmen’s Club of Fort Worth for positively impacting the lives of hundreds of young people in our city.

The Osprey Bass Anglers The Osprey Bass Anglers is an organization that has been in existence for over twenty five years fishing bass tournaments. We also hold a youth tournament at Greenbriar Community Center Lake for approximately 200 - 250 youth from ages 3-16 annually the Saturday before Father’s day. We love to see families enjoy fishing. Our club really looks forward to this annual youth tournament because we enjoy working with the young people to educate them on how fun fishing can be.

The purpose of this club as a Social 501c7 Non-Profit organization is to stimulate public awareness of bass fishing as a sport and to offer our State Conservation Department moral and political support. Secondly, to promote full adherence to all conservation codes, to demand adequate water standards and legal enforcement of existing regulatory standards. Next, to assist in detecting and reporting polluters, other wildlife conservation related offenses, to improve our skills, techniques, share expertise through a friendly fellowship and exchange or ideas in the thrilling sport of bass fishing. Lastly, the club would like to establish a lasting tradition of bass fishing for families in Fort Worth, Texas.

This letter is to show our gratitude for the support we have received from the Sportsmen’s Club of Fort Worth for the many years you have supported our youth tournament. The Sportsmen’s Club of Fort Worth has sponsored and supported our annual youth tournament with fishing equipment such as an assortment of fishing tackle, rod and reel combinations, equipment, etc., and also stocking of the lake with catfish annually. Over 4,000 youth have benefited over the years from the support we have received from the Sportsmen’s Club of Fort Worth. Your organization has been our most consistent supporter over the years and our Bass Fishing Club can only hope this letter will express the appreciation we feel for your

support. The Sportsmen’s Club of Fort Worth has been awesome in supporting our club and you are truly a great organization. If there is anything we can do to support your organization please don’t hesitate to solicit our support. Thank you and God bless your business for the benevolence you’ve shown our club over the years and the youth of South Fort Worth.

Sincerely and Truly Grateful for your Support,The President and Tournament Chairmanand all the Osprey Bass Anglers Club Members.Thank You and God Bless You!

The Texas Pythian HomeThe Texas Pythian Home’s lake lot on Weatherford Lake received a much needed facelift this year. Thank you to the Sportsman’s Club of Fort Worth for taking on this task. The cabin was completely gutted and remodeled. It now has a fully functioning bathroom and kitchen with living space inside. The screened in porch was converted into a bunkhouse with new windows and siding. The dock is in the process of being torn down. Once it is all complete we will have a brand new dock with handrails and a fishing platform. This plot of land is very important to our organization. It was given to us as a donation from the Needham family and it unfortunately was not kept up over the years. Our Maintenance man and his helper will make sure to keep the building and dock in great condition. There will be lots of reasons to go out and enjoy the lake lot:

Weekend Getaways, Slumber Parties, when our families need a place to stay on their weekends, camping, fishing Day trips. We plan to use the lake lot as much as possible since it is now safe for the children. We are very grateful for the grant that the Sportsman’s Club of Fort Worth gave the Texas Pythian Home, Inc. to remodle the cabin and replace the fishing dock.

YMCA Camp Carter YMCA Camp Carter located in the heart of Fort Worth sparks the love of the outdoors with area youth with continued support from the Sportsmen’s Club of Fort Worth. The addition of two state-of-the-art archery ranges provided by the Sportsmen’s Club of Fort Worth provide a safe learning experience for all who step foot on the ranges. Having the equipment security closet, a covered structure, and concrete underfoot make these shooting lanes a huge improvement over the old arrows in a bucket shooting at a straw bale with a red spray painted dot on it.

When our guests walk up to our ranges they know instantly that this is a special place. It’s size and condition warrant their attention as they are about to have a unique experience. Shooters take their place on the provided aluminum bleachers and are given the range safety talk from our RSO. They walk up the sidewalk to take their place in their own shooting lane. Watching their eyes light up when they see not only traditional archery targets but 5 foot tall dinosaurs to take aim on is still a thrill to witness. Parents and guardians know every safety precaution has been thought-out ahead of time in the construction of these ranges. We feel confident that we are training the next generation of outdoor enthusiasts and quite possibly future members of the Sportsman Club of Fort Worth; thanks to your continued support.

Big Brothers Big Sisters - Bigs Outdoors Mentoring ProgramBig Brothers Big Sisters Bigs Outdoors Mentoring Program is grateful for the continued support of the Sportsmen’s Club of Fort Worth. Because of the generosity of SCFW, we have the opportunity to impact the lives of children and continue to grow the Bigs Outdoors Mentoring Program.

The Bigs Outdoors Mentoring Program is growing even bigger and provides even more opportunities for our Bigs and Littles to experience the outdoors. SCFW directly funds four events, including our biggest outdoor adventure, Nature Day and our annual dove hunt, and has enabled BBBS to provide other outdoor opportunities for the children we serve.

Through the support of SCFW, our Nature Day brought a record breaking year of over a 100 people to experience the outdoors. This event has become the most popular event allowing our matches to experience different aspects of the outdoors including gun safety, hunting and wildlife conservation. It is a very special day for our Bigs and Littles to experience the outdoors first hand.

In addition, various hunts throughout the year take place, including an Early Season Duck Hunt and a Late Season Duck Hunt. Also, we had over 25 people at our Dove Hunt this year who were able to take a few birds including a few littles who took their first ones!

Because of you, the Bigs and Littles have made memories that will last a lifetime! We are truly thankful for the support from Sportsmen’s Club of Fort Worth and thank you on behalf of the young men and women who benefit from your generosity!

CASA of Tarrant CountyThanks to the generosity of the Sportsmen’s Club of Fort Worth, 120 abused and neglected children in Tarrant County attended summer camp at YMCA Camp Carter!

In 2017, 5,630 children experienced child abuse and neglect in Tarrant County, 701 of whom were removed from their homes and placed in foster care due to severe abuse. Many foster children do not get to experience the growth, fun, and learning that summer camp brings due to frequent moves to new foster homes, lack of resources, and absence of caring adults who are engaged and committed to providing experiences like summer camp.

That’s where the Sportsmen’s Club of Fort Worth and CASA of Tarrant County stepped in. CASA volunteers advocate for a child’s best interests: helping judges decide where a child should live during and after their time in foster care, advocating for the child’s medical and educational needs are met, and speaking up for all the many little things that are still essential for children to grow and thrive. Due to the generous support of the Sportsmen’s Club Foundation, CASA was able to put on an overnight summer camp at YMCA Camp Carter, providing foster children not only the opportunity to experience the outdoors and have fun at summer camp but also a therapeutic environment to support their

trauma-based needs. CASA staff and volunteers were trained in trauma-informed care strategies, and during camp these strategies were used to help children cope with and heal from their histories of abuse and neglect, all while experiencing the great outdoors. Volunteers and staff were assigned as buddies to children attending camp, and camp sizes were kept smaller to provide more one-on-one attention for children. 100% of funding from the Sportsmen’s Club of Fort Worth allowed CASA to take 60 children to overnight camp at the YMCA Camp Carter (with 120 total children attending).

Your generosity provided 120 Tarrant County foster children a foundational part of a healthy childhood: the opportunity to go to camp and experience the outdoors. On top of this, you gave foster children a trauma-based camp designed to help them recover from the challenges of abuse and neglect. We could not have done this without you.

Thank you for providing the healing nature of the outdoors to vulnerable children. Due to the abuse they experienced, they have too many painful memories. You gave them happy memories they will always carry with them with your support of CASA of Tarrant County in 2018.

The Refuge Outfitters for Christ’s Kingdom (The ROCK) The ROCK is a Christ based salvation ministry which utilizes hunting/fishing/sports as a tool to reach the hearts of youth in order to clearly relay the Gospel message of Jesus Christ. The primary tool used to reach these youth is a weekend of hunting, and there is no shortage of ranches available which want to partner with The ROCK. Prior to this current hunting season, The ROCK was limited to using ranches with blinds that could hold three (3) individuals. This was an operational mandate necessitated by insurance coverage requirements.

Thanks to the Sportsmen’s Club of Fort Worth, the primary hindrance to utilizing all of the properties available to us was addressed this past year. The ROCK was blessed by being awarded a grant to procure two (2) SwiftLift portable hunting blinds that will accommodate three (3) individuals. Additionally, the Sportsmen’s Club provided suitable hunting clothing for the youth who go on these hunts. In most instances, these youth have never been in the field and lack even the basic clothing to be out in cold/rainy weather, which is often encountered during hunting season.

The ROCK functions as a facilitator/coordinator between numerous DFW area youth organizations and ranchers Our staff is completely volunteer, and we pay no salaries. We do not buy game animals as the ranchers/property owners we “partner” with donate all game we harvest. We select our participants from local DFW Metroplex Area organizations who propose youth who would benefit from the experience we provide. This includes numerous churches, the Young Life organization, Hope Farms, and others. We ask the sponsoring youth organization to recommend youth who are described as “deserving”, but this definition applies to many situations in the homelife of today’s youth. Normally, it would be a youth from a single parent home

(normally a mother) who has no male influence to interact with. The cost to the youth and their sponsoring organization is nothing. We furnish transportation, fuel, food, drinks, rifles ammunition, guides (both Spiritual and Hunting), and adequate clothing for them to hunt in. Additionally, we pay for all processing of whatever game we harvest over a weekend and provide it to the family of the youth who took the game animal.

The ROCK will hunt between 32 and 65 youth this 2018 hunting season. The youth are witnesses to the lives and actions of Christian men (their mentors) for a weekend where they will see, interact, and participate in the harvesting of game animals. By providing the youth with this opportunity, the area organizations will be able to build on this weekend experience and continue to provide the youth with an ongoing mentoring relationship.

The ROCK would not have been able to accommodate the number of youth that we served this year without the help of the Sportsmen’s Club. Thank you for your generosity!!!

Outdoor Tomorrow FoundationWith the generous support of the Sportsmen’s Club of Fort Worth, the Outdoors Tomorrow Foundation (OTF) has more than 3,200 students in 32 public and private schools in Tarrant County participating in its Outdoor Adventures (OA) program. Many of these students have little opportunity to learn about the outdoors any other way. Unlike any other school curriculum, Outdoor Adventures covers a variety of outdoor skills including hunter education (1,070 hunter education certificates awarded this year), fishing, boating safety, animal identification, survival skills, the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation, NASP archery, and outdoor cooking.

The OTF deeply appreciates the Club’s support and plans to continue to expand and improve the Outdoor Adventures program throughout Tarrant County. Many schools have limited, or no budget for secondary physical education curriculum, but the funding from generous supporters such as SCFW helps offset the cost and allow schools to add OA. This funding enables schools to purchase both the initial equipment package, including archery, outdoor cooking, and fishing tackle; as well as, enhancement packages that allow them to teach additional skills and accommodate more students. Outdoor Adventures reaches youth from all walks of life, providing outdoor skills that can be enjoyed and passed on for generations.

To celebrate the Club’s contribution, the OTF is pleased to include the Club in the annual Rendezvous of the Guardians Banquet and Outdoor Adventures sporting clays shoot next April 3th and 4th.
