Description

Steel fibers have been used to reinforce concrete for over 100 yearssince the first patent was applied for in 1874. Introducing fibers into theconcrete provides new and improved mechanical properties; the fibers aredistributed in three-dimensions throughout the concrete providingperformance precisely where it is needed.

Steel fibers today offer the designer and constructor state-of-the-arttechnology for use as reinforcement in many concrete elements andapplications. There are many varieties of styles, shapes and sizes of steelfibers in the market today.

Introducing steel fibers into the concrete mix provide new mechanicalproperties. We now have a new material, with improved mechanicalproperties that can enhance structural applications. The fibers can beincluded as a substitute for the common steel reinforcement, or as acomplement, or for a better performance for strain that the commonreinforcement can’t absorb.

In mechanical and performance terms, by adding steel fibers to theconcrete mix you can:

Rebar Stirrups (Cut & Bend)

Description

Stirrup reinforcing is a major factor in adding strength to concrete supportcolumns. Though concrete is strong by itself, it’s even stronger with steelbars running through its length. To ensure that this composite material isas strong as possible, engineers use stirrups, also made of steel, to keepeverything straight and in order when the mixed concrete is poured.

AssemblyStirrups are separate from one another. Rebar is placed into the basewhere the concrete will be poured. The stirrups, which are little more thansquare bands, are placed around the steel rebar at regular intervals tostrap them tightly into a given shape. This forms a skeletal square orrectangular column inside the mold. The concrete is poured over theskeleton, embedding it inside the column.

ResistanceThe stirrups provide resistance, which is more specific than strength. Theconcrete and the rebar are supporting the load coming down on thecolumn from above. The stirrups act like tendons, keeping things togetherwhen there’s pressure and flexing. Though not essential, the stirrups aredefinitely helpful. They’re also used in beams, which are laid horizontallyrather than vertically as columns are.
