BUSINESS MATTERS

When I got into the Chamber of Commerce profession Iknew that it would provide some great opportunities. I’vehad the privilege of attending some first-rate conferencesand hear from well-known speakers and presenters. However, this last year I’ve had the opportunity to travel totwo unique destinations and get a bit of a differentperspective on life.In March, I went with some of our members on an 8 day tourof China. It was a fabulous trip and a chance to see a reallydeveloping part of our world. We spent time in Beijing,Shanghai, Hangzhou and Suzhou. Combined, these citieshave a population of 50 million people!!! I cannot conveythe amount of building and development we observed there. We passed literally hundreds of cranes during our tours ofthese cities and saw rows of factories.Whether you are supportive of outsourcing or not, it isimportant to recognize what exists elsewhere. There are wellover a billion people living in China and they need jobs tosurvive. Good or bad, the Chinese have been very successfulat bringing companies into their country to provide jobs. Theworld has changed with the onset of globalization (read TheWorld is Flat by Thomas Friedman for more on that). Ourcountry must not only recognize what is happeningelsewhere but also pay attention to it.Last month, I went with 50+ other Rochesterians on a tourof Egypt. It was another exotic locale with a fascinatinghistory. We spent time in Cairo, Luxor and Aswan and hadthe chance to take a cruise down the Nile River. We sawmany of the highlights of ancient Egypt including thePyramids of Giza, the Temple of Karnak, The Valley of theKings and Abu Simbel. I was absolutely astounded at howmuch of these places still remain even after thousands ofyears have passed.

We arrivedin Egypt onthe heels oftheRamadanholidayand what afascinatingtime to bethere! The streets of Cairo were alive well into the night withfolks celebrating the breaking of the fast and then theFestival of Eid. I found the Egyptian people to be very warmand welcoming. In fact, I had a couple different experienceswhere they went out of their way to ensure our needs weremet. Though our cultures are very different there are somesimilarities: Coca-Cola &McDonald’s being just a couple ofthose! In both countries as foreigners we were very interesting tothe locals. In fact in China, as we snapped pictures of theamazing sights, we were often asked to be in photos withthe Chinese themselves! On both of these trips, the folks that I traveled with were adelight to spend time with. An unexpected benefit was theopportunity to network with them and get to know them a bitbetter. They came from all backgrounds and professions andmade my traveling time all the more interesting. It has been an unexpected delight to see these places andexperience the similarities and differences between ourcultures. I hope you’ll consider joining us on one of ourupcoming trips.

Every year, on the third Thursday of November, smokersacross the nation take part in the American Cancer Society’sGreat American Smokeout® by smoking less or quitting forthe day on the third Thursday of November. The eventchallenges people to stop using tobacco and helps makepeople aware of the many tools they can use to quit forgood. In many towns and communities, local volunteers supportquitters, publicize the event, and press for laws that controltobacco use and discourage teenagers from starting.Research shows that smokers are most successful in kickingthe habit when they have some means of support, such as:• nicotine replacement products• counseling• stop-smoking groups• telephone smoking cessation hotlines• prescription medicine to lessen cravings• guide books• encouragement and support from friendsand family members

Using 2 or more of these measures to help you quit worksbetter than using any one of them alone. For example, somepeople use a prescription medicine along with nicotinereplacement. Other people may use as many as 3 or 4 of theother measures listed above.Telephone stop smoking hotlines are an easy-to-useresource. And as of 2008, they are available in all 50 states.Call 1-800-ACS-2345 (1-800-227-2345) to find telephonecounseling or other support in your area.

Support is out there, but the most recentinformation suggeststhat fewer than 1 in 4smokers reportshaving tried any of ther e c o m m e n d e dtherapies during his orher last quit attempt. The Smokeout hashelped bring aboutdramatic changes inAmericans' attitudesabout smoking. These changes have led to communityprograms and smoke-free laws that are now saving lives inmany states. Annual Smokeouts began in the 1970s whensmoking and secondhand smoke were commonplace. The idea for the Great American Smokeout grew out of a1974 event. Lynn R. Smith, editor of the Moticello Times inMinnesota, spearheaded the state's first D-Day, or Don'tSmoke Day. The idea may have been inspired by Arthur P.Mullaney of Randolph, Massachusetts. Three years earlier,Mullaney asked people to give up cigarettes for a day anddonate the money they would have spent on cigarettes to ahigh school scholarship fund. The idea caught on, and on November 18, 1976, theCalifornia Division of the American Cancer Societysuccessfully got nearly 1 million smokers to quit for the day. That California event marked the first Smokeout, and theSociety took it nationwide in 1977.Article from American Cancer Society Website

Non-profit organizations that include: the Greece Rotary Club,Greece KIWANIS Club, Two Doors Community Resource Center, the Greece Performing Arts Society, Greece Volunteer FireDepartments, Greece Volunteer Ambulance St. Joseph’s Villa, TwoDoors Community Resource Center, the Greece Historical Societyand Museum are just some of the community organizationsbelonging to the Greece Chamber of Commerce that continuallydevote time and effort to make our community a better place to workand live.

Greece Chamber member support doesn’t stop with Non-profitorganizations.
