Ducks provide natural fertilizer to thesoil, control insect pests, remove theweeds, regularly cultivate the soiland stimulate the rice plant toproduce more rice tillers.

By releasing a 3-4 days old ducklingsin the rice field 5 days aftertransplanting, farmers will no longerapply synthetic inputs because theducks presence will replace them.

As a result, rice farmers can expect a10% - 30% increase in yield in threeyears time.

Materials Needed

A. Materials to be prepared prior to theduck release are the following:

1. 150 heads of ducklings

2. 2.5 rolls of nets for inclusion(which will cover 1ha) or anyindigenous materials

3. Rope # 5 (400 m) and tie wire(.5 kg)

4. Bamboo sticks for post

5. Locally available materials forduck housing

6. Waterer (either plastic or madeof bamboo poles)

7. Brooding box

IV. Familiarization (Day6-12)

• From 6th day up to 12th day, open theenclosed portion and allow to ducklingsto swim freely into the entire blocks ofrice paddies (but not to the entire ricearea – see figure 23 A&B) .
