Soldier (General Duty) (All Arms)
Soldier (General Duty)
Soldier (General Duty) are the backbone of the army and consist mainly of fighting troops apart from other trades. You could be enrolled into Arms or Services. The duties will be as under:-
1. Arms. In Arms you could join the Infantry, Artillery, Armoured Corps, Engineers or Army Air Defence (AAD) as fighting troops, drivers, operators, gunners etc and many other General Duties.
2. Services. In Services you could be enrolled into Army Service Corps (ASC), Ordnance, Army Medical Corps (AMC) on General Duties, operators, drivers etc.
Soldier (Technical)(Technical Arms, Artillery, Army Air Defence)
Soldier Technical
The army has weapons, vehicles, equipment which are required to be operated and maintained. We require candidates with a science background and aptitude for electrical, mechanical and other technical fields.
Soldier (Clerk / Store Keeper Technical) (All Arms)

The army is a large organisation with each unit consisting of 600-1000 personnel and holding a large inventory of stores and equipment. There is a requirement of clerical staff to maintain the inventory, carryout documentation of personnel, book keeping and other routine correspondence. Thus there is requirement of candidates conversant in English and Maths/Book Keeping.

The Army has its own hospitals and polyclinics. All kinds of specialists are present in Army Hospitals. Each hospital and polyclinic requires Nursing Assistants to assist the doctors, look after the patients, work in the Operation Theaters, account for medicines in the medical stores and administer first aid. We thus require dedicated candidates with a science background with Biology to be enrolled as Soldier Nursing Assistant..
Soldier (Tradesman) (All Arms)

Each unit and Headquarters (HQ) of the Army is self contained in maintaining itself in all respects. It is like a society which is fully self sustaining and not dependent on outside help. Each unit has a strength of 600-1000 personnel who live within a compound and get all support from within that compound/society. Thus each unit has its own langers, stores, living quarters and lines, offices, gardens, vehicles and equipment. There is thus a requirement of a lot of support staff to run various institutes and to maintain the unit area.
1. Chef. The troops have to be fed. Each unit has its own cook houses. Food has to be provided to troops three times a day apart form other requirements. We thus require qualified, dedicated cooks who have an aptitude for cookery.
2. Hair Dresser. Being a self sustained society each unit has its own barber shops and barbers who maintain the upkeep of the troops.
3. Store Hand. Each unit holds lot of stores like rations, clothing, equipment, oils and lubricants etc. These stores have to be maintained in a good condition so that they can be used by troops. We require store handlers who will be able to maintain these stores, account for them and assist in maintaining their service.
4. Animal Store Holders. Units with mules and dogs have equipment and rations as per their specific requirements. There are harnesses and clothing for the animals, medicines, rations (hay), etc. These are stored till they are required to be used. The stores are required to be maintained in a serviceable condition. We thus
require candidates who will be Store Holders and will assist in maintaining all this equipment and stores for animals in a serviceable condition.
5. Ferrier. The mules require special care. They have to have their hoofs maintained. Shoes have to be put and maintained. We require candidates who are conversant with this work.
6. Pioneers. Many a time labour is required to work on certain sites, lift loads, work on certain construction sites etc. The Army cannot hire casual labour for certain sensitive tasks. We thus require labour to do the tasks of handling stores and working on construction sites.
7. Postal. The Army has its own Post Offices and service to cater for all official correspondence. These Post offices are manned by army personnel. We require candidates to run these Post Offices and receive and despatch ‘dak’.
8. Steward. Each unit has its own Officers Mess which caters for the food requirements of the officers especially in field areas. We require dedicated staff who can assist in the Mess and serve food to the officers in a hygienic and pleasant manner.
9. Artisan (wood). The Army needs candidates who have the knowledge and expertise to work as carpenters. Candidates with ITI qualification or traditional knowledge are preferred.
10. Artisan (Painter). A lot of equipment has to maintained and marked / numbered as per specifications. Candidates with painting skills and expertise are required for the job.
11. Artisan (Tailor). Each unit has 600-1000 troops. Their uniforms are required to be maintained to high standards. Normal wear and tear has to be repaired. Candidates with traditional skills or ITI training are required for the job.
12. Artisan (Metallurgy). Candidates with traditional skills or with qualification from ITI are required to work as blacksmiths.
13. Artisan (Musician). The army units have their Military Bands consisting mainly of Drums, Trumpets and Pipes. Candidates with knowledge of reading music, traditional knowledge or liking for music and /or training in music may apply for the same.
14. Equipment Repairer. The shoes and equipment of troops have to be maintained in serviceable condition especially in field areas where there is no outside support. Cobblers are required to repair shoes and other canvas/leather equipment. Candidates with traditional skills or training are required for the job.
15. Kennel Man. The army has its own specialist dogs for guard duties/sniffers and trackers. We require dedicated candidates who love dogs to work as their handlers and look after them.
16. Washer Man. The uniforms of troops and officers have to be maintained to a high standard. We require candidates with traditional skills and / or training/experience to serve as washermans.
17. Mess Keeper. Each unit has an Officers Mess. Personnel are required to assist the cook in his daily tasks and to clean the utensils and kitchen everyday. Candidates keen on a ‘Masalchis’ job can apply.
18. House Keeper. The unit area, lines, toilets, offices, gardens, roads have to be cleaned and maintained everyday. We require dedicated candidates with knowledge and skills for the job.

The Army has certain units which have horses, mules and dogs. The mules are used in difficult terrain to maintain the troops in far flung areas. These mules become the lifeline of the troops and hence the mules have to kept healthy and fit. Dogs are used for specialist tasks like sniffer dogs, bomb disposal, tracking etc. They too require handling, training and to be kept fit. We thus have our own hospitals and doctors who treat the animals and keep them fit. We thus require candidates with Science background who will work in Veterinary Hospitals, look after the animals, work in the Operation Theaters, account for medicines in the medical stores and administer first aid when required.

The Army has soldiers who come from Class VIII/X backgrounds. There is a requirement to further enhance the education standards of these soldiers. Also certain specialist education / military training is imparted to the soldiers during their service for which we require MA/MSc/ B.Ed students who are well educated and have teaching abilities.

Religion is a very important part of every Indian. Religion provides great strength to soldiers in difficult times. Each unit has its Mandir/Masjid/Church. There is a requirement of candidates who are conversant with the scriptures and who can carryout the ceremonies in the religious places. We require Pandits/Maulvis/Padris to firstly run our religious places and also serve as Psychological Counselors for the troops.
Junior Commissioned Officer (Catering) (Army Service Corps)

The Army runs certain large training Institutes and Messes which require to feed large strength of personnel. Also there is a requirement that the food provided is wholesome with the correct nutritional intake. There is thus a requirement of candidates who are qualified/trained in catering services and who will be able to run our Messes.

Note: An eligible candidate can be granted prescribed relaxations in all three measurements i.e. Height, Chest and Weight. However, he cannot claim dispensations of more than one category i.e. parental and sportsmen.
Instant Enrolment
Instant enrolment is provided into the Army as Soldier General Duty to the following through respective Regiment / Corps Training Centres:
1. One son of a battle casualty. 2. One real brother of a battle casualty, when deceased was unmarried / did not have a male child. 3. One real brother of a battle casualty provided he gets married to the deceased widow who is issueless or has no male
child. 4. One real brother of a battle casualty provided he gets married to the deceased widow who has a male child but who has
not attained age for enrolment. 5. One real son of the battle casualty when the battle casualty has been invalidated out of service on medical ground. 6. The candidates should meet age, educational qualification, physical measurement and medical standards. The
concessions as applicable to the sons of servicemen / ex-servicemen in physical measurement will also be given in such cases. They will not be put through any formal test like Physical Fitness Test and written tests.
Medical Standards
A candidate should have robust physique and good mental health.
Chest should be well developed having minimum 5 cms expansion.
Should have normal hearing with each ear and good binocular vision in both eyes. He should be able to read 6/6 in distant vision chart with each eye. Colour vision should be CP – III (able to recognize white, red and green signal colors correctly as shown by Martin’s Lantern at 1.5 mtrs).
Should have sufficient number of natural healthy gum and teeth i.e. minimum 14 dental points.
Should not have diseases like deformity of bones, hydrocele and varicocele or piles.
Soldier General Duty for infantry should have 6/6 eye sight.

Note:
Documents mentioned at Paragraph 1 to 11 above are required in original alongwith one photocopy of each document duly attested by Principal / Headmaster / Gazetted Rank Officer. Attested photocopy / printout of education certificate obtained from the Internet duly attested by the school Principal will be accepted at the Rally site for candidates whose original certificates have not been received from the concerned education board after declaration of the result or for candidates who have deposited their certificates in some other institute where they might be undergoing some professional course.

Instant Enrolment
Instant enrolment is provided into the Army as Soldier (General Duty) to the following categories through respective Regiment / Corps Training Centres:
1. One son of a battle casualty. 2. One real brother of a battle casualty, when deceased was unmarried / did not have a male child. 3. One real brother of a battle casualty provided he gets married to the deceased widow who is issueless or has no male
child. 4. One real brother of a battle casualty provided he gets married to the deceased widow who has a male child but who
has not attained age for enrolment. 5. One real son of the battle casualty when the battle casualty has been invalidated out of service on medical ground. 6. The candidates should meet age, educational qualification, physical measurement and medical standards. The
concessions as applicable to the sons of servicemen / ex-servicemen in physical measurement will also be given in such cases. They will not be put through any formal tests like Physical Fitness Test and written tests.

Defence Service Corps (DSC) Recruitment
1. General The role of the Defence Service Corps (DSC) is to provide security cover to Defence installations of the three services and Civil Establishments of the Ministry of Defence where DSC cover is sanctioned under the specific orders of Government of India against sabotage and pilferage. To fulfill this role, Defence Service Corps (DSC) provides armed security staff, static guards. Searchers, escorts and mobile patrols by night and day. It is the sixth largest Corps of the Army. 2. Contribution of Ex Servicemen into Defence Service Corps (DSC) The contribution of the three services towards Defence Service Corps (DSC) recruitment is : 1. Ex Army - 75% 2. Ex Navy / Air Force - 01% 3. Ex Territorial Army - 24% Posting of Defence Service Corps (DSC)Personnel. Posting of Defence Service Corps (DSC)personnel are rotated in all the commands. Posting to the home command will be considered on completion of one tenure outside the own command. Defence Service Corps (DSC) personnel can apply for compassionate ground posting on completion of three years of service in Defence Service Corps (DSC). Last posting of a Defence Service Corps (DSC)personnel is as far as possible the home posting irrespective of his earlier service profile.
Eligibility Criteria for Re-enrolment into Defence Service Corps (DSC) for
Other Rank.
1. Character Character assessed at the time of discharge from former service as well as re-assessed in terms of Para 170 (d) of Regulations for the Army-1987 should be Very Goodor Exemplary.
2. Discipline Personnel with not more than one red ink entry during the last five year of former service and not more than two red ink entries during the entire former service are eligible for re-enrolment into Defence Service Corps (DSC). However, those personnel who have been awarded one red ink entry under Army Act Section 48 for intoxication during the last five years of former service are NOT eligible for re-enrolment into Defence Service Corps (DSC).
3. Service Personnel from Army / Navy / Air Force should have rendered minimum five years colour service. Service counted for pension / gratuity is treated as qualifying service. Ex-Territorial Army personnel should have rendered three years embodied service with minimum attendance in seven Annual Training Camps (ATC).
4. Medical Category Medical Category of a personnel seeking re-enrolment into Defence Service Corps (DSC) should be SHAPE-1 at the time of re-enrolment i.e. declared SHAPE-1 either at the time of discharge medical board or at the time of Re-Category Medical Board. However, personnel placed in Low Medical Category(LMC) (both temporary/permanent) during the last five years of former service preceding the date of discharge (even upgraded to SHAPE-1 before discharge) due to "Alcohol Dependence Syndrome” are not eligible for re-enrolment into Defence Service Corps (DSC).
5. Five Years Gap Gap from the date of discharge from former service till the individual reports to the recruiting agencies for physical and medical test based on the call letter issued by them, should be within five years. Hence the date on which the Ex-servicemen reports to recruiting agencies based on the said call letter, is the day he is considered to have reported for re-enrolment. This date will further be referred as the date of screening for Defence Service Corps (DSC) Enrolment.
6. Age Criteria a. Soldier General Duty Defence Service Corps (DSC) Upto 48 years on the date of screening. b. Soldier Clerk Defence Service Corps (DSC) Upto 50 years on the date of screening.
7. Education Qualification The minimum education qualification required for non-matric personnel for re-enrolment into Defence Service Corps (DSC) is Army 3rd Class Certificate of Education (ACE-III).
8. Re-Enrolment of Clerk (Staff Duty) Ex-combatant Clerks (Staff Duty) having minimum technical standard of Class – III Clerk (Staff Duty) are eligible for re-enrolment against Clerk vacancies into Defence Service Corps (DSC). Store Keeper Technical of (Army), Clerk (Store Control) of Army and Clerk (Pay Accounts) of Air Force are
not eligible for re-enrolment against clerk vacancies into Defence Service Corps (DSC) since they lack the requisite standards prescribed for Clerk (Staff Duty) vide qualification Regulations of Soldiers-1958.
9. Re-Enrolment of Territorial Army Personnel Ex-Territorial Army personnel drawing pension for their Territorial Army service, can now be enrolled into Defence Service Corps (DSC) through HQ Recruiting Zones / Army Recruiting Offices (AROs). Re-enrolment into Defence Service Corps (DSC) for ex Territorial Army personnel who are not drawing any type of pension will be carried out by the respective Regimental Centres. Details of embodied service in respect of personnel from Territorial Army duly calculated and signed by the Record Officer and the certificate showing attendance of seven Annual Training Camps (ATCs)duly signed by Commanding Officer of the Territorial Army Batallion are to be furnished and forwarded alongwith verification report to theDefence Service Corps (DSC) Records.

Gratuity and Pension Under the revised terms of gratuity and pension, Defence Service Corps (DSC) personnel will continue to draw the following:
1. Military pension and retain Death-cum-Retirement Gratuity (DCRG), in which case their former Military Service shall not count as the qualifying service.
2. They will be entitled to second service pension and DCRG if service in Defence Service Corps (DSC) is 15 yrs or more.
3. Minimum qualifying service to earn service gratuity is 5 years. 4. If individual desires to include his previous military service, he will cease to draw pension and also refund
the service gratuity including DCRG if any.
Period of Engagement
(a) Sepoys Initial term of engagement 10 years extendable by 5 years upto 57 years of age, whichever is earlier. (b) JCOs Initial term of engagement 5 years extendable by 5 years upto 57 years of age, whichever is earlier. (c) Lateral Entry Subedar Majors Initial term of engagement is 4 years or upto 57 years of age, whichever is earlier. Concessions and Benefits In addition to pay, the personnel of Defence Service Corps (DSC)will continue to get Dearness Allowances and other allowances as applicable to Army, Navy and Air Force personnel. They are also entitled for the following: 1. 45 days of Annual Leave and 15 days of Casual Leave.

Recruitment Procedure An ex-servicemen undergoes following stages with Recruiting Organization / Regimental Centres prior to re-enrolment: 1. Registration Registers are being maintained at all Army Recruiting Offices (AROs) where Ex-Servicemen can
register themselves for Defence Service Corps (DSC) enrolment. The act of registering the name indicates his willingness / availability for enrolment intoDefence Service Corps (DSC) as and when vacancies are available. Seniority of registration will be taken into account while issuing call up letter for enrolment.
2. Depending on the vacancies allotted to HQ Recruiting Zones / Army Recruiting Offices (ARO) / Regimental Centres, the candidates are intimated as per the seniority maintained in the register during stage 1 and are asked to report to the respective Army Recruiting Office (ARO) for physical and medical screening. The day the ex-servicemen reports to the Recruiting Organization based on the call letter is the day he is considered to have reported for re-enrolment.
3. Physical Criteria Physical criteria for Ex servicemen for Defence Service Corps (DSC) is not being checked as the ex servicemen would have met all physical criteria during his initial enrolment.
4. Physical Test Physical Proficiency Tests (PPT) will be conducted during screening. 5. Medical Test Medical will be carried out by only one doctor. The following additional tests will be carried out
from the nearest Military Hospital (MH): a. Haemogram. b. Biochemistry - Urea, Creatinine, Blood Sugar (FF & PP), Cholesterol and Lipid Profile Test. c. Chest X Ray. d. ECG. 6. Screening During Recruitment Rallies. Screening for Defence Service Corps (DSC)enrolment and medical
screening may be carried out during a recruitment rally also. 7. Exercising Option to Join 6 Months Prior to Retirement A serving personnel can fill the form for recruitment
in Defence Service Corps (DSC) six months prior to his retirement. This option can be exercised while the individual is still in service.

All candidates who are desirous of getting enrolled in the Indian Army as JCO / OR are required to apply online at www.joinindianarmy.nic.in. After registration candidates shall follow instructions as given out and apply for the selected trade for which they are eligible. The candidates shall be given a date and place for conduct of Physical and Medical tests, the procedure for which is enumerated below.
Recruitment Procedure
General As part of the screening process, candidates will be tested in Physical Fitness Tests (PFT).Physical Fitness Tests (PFT) is mandatory and will be carried out for all categories during the screening process of recruitment to assess the candidate’s physical ability and courage. Provisions for Extra Time for 1.6 Km Run for Hilly Terrain Areas
Timings applicable for conduct of 1.6 Km run in hilly terrain will be as under: 1. Upto 5000 feet - As per paragraph 4.
2. Between 5000 feet to 9000 feet - Additional 30 secs extra given to each group. 3. Between 9000 feet to 12000 feet - Additional 120 secs extra given to each group.
Pull Ups on Beam (Under Grip)
The marks for pull-ups on beam will be awarded as under:

Weightage in Merit
Performance of individual for Soldier General Duty, Soldier Technical / Clerk / Store Keeper Technical / Nursing Assistant and Soldier Tradesman will be taken into account while awarding bonus marks as given below:
1. Soldier General Duty - Physical Fitness Test (PFT) + Common Entrance Examination (CEE) marks 2. Soldier Technical / Clerk / Store Keeper Technical / Nursing Assistant -Common Entrance Examination
(CEE) marks. However, the individual should have qualified in Physical Fitness Test (PFT). 3. Tradesmen with Aptitude Test - 30% Physical Fitness Test (PFT) marks + 30% Common Entrance
Examination (CEE) marks + 40% Tradesman Aptitude Test marks. 4. Tradesmen without Aptitude Test - 60% Physical Fitness Test (PFT) marks + 40% Common Entrance
Examination (CEE) marks. 5. Tradesmen Musician - 50% Physical Fitness Test (PFT) marks + 25% Aptitude Test marks + 25% Common
Entrance Examination (CEE) marks.
Havildar Education and Havildar Survey Automated Cartographer - No Weightage. However, JCO Religious Teacher / Catering / Direct Havildar Sportsman (Meritorious Sportsman) should have qualified in Physical Fitness Test (PFT).
Aptitude Test
Aptitude Test In order to ensure that the individuals being selected in the tradesmen category are suited for the job, which they are expected to perform, it is desirable that at the screening stage itself the candidates are subjected to an aptitude test. The aptitude test is conducted for candidates of artisan and traditional trades. Aptitude proficiency test will be conducted as specified in Appx to IHQ of MoD (Army) letter No 62506/Rtg 5(OR)(A) dt 20 Sep 06. Need for adhering to the policies laid down for conducting Aptitude Tests is mandatory. For Soldier Tradesmen it is reiterated that, the physical fitness tests constitute a vital input about a soldier’s potential / aptitude. The Screening Board will conduct Tradesmen Aptitude Test at the rally site itself, as it is a pre-requisite for the individual to qualify before he is allowed to appear in the Common Entrance Examination (CEE). Soldier Tradesman category who are declared fail in aptitude test and are in Permanent Unfit (PUF) /Temporary Unfit (TUF) category, they will not go for further review medical exam and medical slip will not be given to such candidates. This will also be applicable for Soldier Tradesman (Musician) category.
