I am pleased and honoured to once again serve as president of the Board of Directors for RSCL. Since my return I have found that the adage “the more things change, the more they stay the same” holds true for RSCL. Staff have changed, new programs have started, staff are playing musical chairs with offices, new contracts, new self-advocats. Change is constant. But no maer what, the staff's commitment and dedicaon is unwavering. That always stays the same.

At every funcon I aend I am grafied at the level of the staff and the professionalism they have. I have been at informal barbeques and picnics, fundraisers, and more formal meengs. Every event reminds me how lucky my daughter is to be affiliated with RSCL and how lucky I am to volunteer with the board and other commiees and to be a part of this organizaon.

I want to thank the staff for all their efforts. I also would like to thank the past board members who have just finished their terms, we are appreciave of your me and experse, and the present board members who give of their me and help me run this stellar organizaon. I will connue to take pride in my role.

Melanie Arnis, Board President

the more things change, the more they stay the same

Oen when I sit down to write my contribuon to the newsleer I have already formulated in my mind what I will write. Not this me! Certainly, my lack of inspiraon regarding what to write had nothing to do with a lack of events, acvies, changes or good things happening at RSCL. Quite the contrary, oen there are so many good things happening at RSCL it is hard to decide what to include. However, this me I took my inspiraon from the number of community partners, friends of RSCL and companies that are represented in the newsleer. Whether it is contribung to or aending one of our events, dropping off clothing at one of our donaon bins, hiring a person with a disability or volunteering, each contribuon makes a difference to people with a disability and the community at large. I am frequently asked why RSCL doesn't serve individuals and families outside of Richmond. The answer is quite simple; our mission is to help the people with a disability become included and involved in their community as well

as provide service. As an organizaon, we need to be a part of the community in order to help the people we serve become connected and included in their community. If RSCL is spread over many communies providing service, we have less energy and resources to develop our connecons and relaonships in the community. For RSCL, supporng people with a developmental disability and their families has never just been about providing services. It is about providing services in a well-connected, inclusive community that we have helped to develop. And, a well-connected, supporve and accepng community benefits us all. Community living improves everyday life for everyone living in Richmond. This newsleer is a wonderful example of the ways in which our community helps to fulling the larger mission of RSCL and the dreams of the people we support. Enjoy!

Busy Days at Treehouse!

Over the last few months the children have been very busy in our program. We learned about different cultural celebraons and tradions including Diwali, Dia de Los Muertos, and our annual Mulcultural Potluck lunch in November. We also had our annual holiday celebraon party in December with a special visit from Santa.

We are off to a good start with the Seeds of Empathy program this year and the children have been enjoying geng to know baby Suvi and her mother Eveliina over the last several months. The family visits that happen every three weeks give the children a chance to connect with Suvi, to observe her development, and label her feelings. In this way the baby is the "teacher", which the Family Guide uses to help children idenfy and reflect on their own feelings and the feelings of others. We are always excited to see the many changes in Suvi as she grows and learns new ways to connect with her mommy and the world around her.

In January we hosted an evening parent social which had a great turnout and was enjoyed by everyone. It was a fun evening and a nice way for our families to connect and get to know each other a lile bit beer.

As we start the new year we look forward to more learning together with our special celebraons and fun acvies that include Pyjama Day, Valennes Day, and our Chinese New Year party & sr fry lunch!

DID YOU KNOW? RSCL has a Family Resource Program?

The Family Resource Program provides informaon about supports and services available both locally and provincially for individuals with developmental disabilies and their families. Funded wholly by donaons and grants from the City of Richmond and BC Gaming Commission (Direct Access), the Family Resource Program aims to assist families through periods of transion that are not limited to mes of crisis. The program provides family-to-family networking, training and informaon sessions for family members and individuals with a developmental disability in the community, as well as opportunies for parents to share their experiences and important informaon with others.

In the coming months, RSCL will partner with partner agencies to offer the following workshops for families:

On March 24, the Family Support Instute is coming to do a presentaon on Representaon Agreements. Caring Place room 3406:00-8:00 pm

On April 26, PLAN is coming to discuss Wills and Estate Planning. Caring Place room 3406:30 – 9pm

Adult Services Holiday Party 2015Everyone was excited to purchase their ckets and

celebrate the holiday season together. Everybody found

their table and began to mingle. It was nice to see old friends

and meet new friends. Some people came with a friend or

friends, and some people came by themselves.

Although the food was great, some people waited a long

me for it to be served. Aer dinner was served, people

were waing for dessert, yet we wanted to get the party

started. We thought we would get grooving to the music and

dance with everyone!

Estephan got the party started when he jumped up on stage

and started dancing. He was so happy that he made

everyone in the room happy. Our DJ, Chris had a great

selecon of popular music. We had a great me. It was fun

to see all different people dancing with each other. We

danced unl the very end, unl it was me to go home.

We had such a great me that we decided that we want to

have another dance - maybe in the spring or summer. One

year is too long to wait for such a fun me!

Children Services Holiday Party 2015November 28, marked RSCL Children's Services' 21st annual

holiday party at the South Arm Community Centre. Our theme

was Santa's Vacaon and the gym was decorated like a tropical

luau with a seasonal twist. RSCL families enjoyed cras, face-

painng, a beach themed play area, and more. A visit from

Santa was the highlight of the aernoon. Santa, wearing his

sandals and Hawaiian shirt, had his photo taken with many of

the eager guests.

A special thank you to our generous donors who helped make

this year's party memorable for everyone. Thank you to

Imperial Landing Starbucks for much appreciated coffee and

hot chocolate; to Market Crossing Tim Hortons for their tasty

Timbits; and to Richmond Superstore for a variety of delicious

snacks and refreshments.

thOn Tuesday, November 10 RSCL hosted a record-seng Benefit of

Possibilies…A Community Affair at the Pacific Gateway Hotel. Our Great

Gatsby themed event featured a gourmet dinner, live entertainment,a unique

silent aucon featuring baskets contributed by all of RSCL's programs, and an

excing live aucon. During the evening, we awarded our Community Living

Awards to Thompson Community Associaon (Community Partner), ADESA

Auto Aucon Richmond (Corporate Partner), Emily Lee (Outstanding

Individual) and Board of Directors Past President Tanis Reimer (Outstanding

Contribuon).

We are grateful to our community partners who helped to make the evening a

success. Our Arlene and Kevin from our Youth Connecons program, along

with their colleague Simon set the mood with their jazz trio Starry Night.

Custom Cookies by Sally donated the edible centrepieces that truly fit the

theme of the event. Marc Bergevin and John Macdonald and their colleagues

from ADESA Aucons created a lively atmosphere and helped us raise a record

amount during our live aucon – especially with the addional donaons made

by our Master of Ceremonies Chuck Keeling of Great Canadian Gaming .

A highlight of the evening was the photo op provided by the classic 1932 Ponac

Roadster which was loaned to the event by collector Steve Whitelaw. Steve and

his wife aended the event and were inspired by the cause. Steve made an

incredibly generous offer – to sell the car with paral proceeds to RSCL. With no

interested buyers at the event, our friends at ADESA took the classic back to

their show room. Just before Christmas they put the car on the block –

auconing it for well over the reserve price and raising more than $4,000 for

RSCL. Thank you all!

Lending a hand…

Last summer Great Canadian Gaming hosted a management conference which focused on giving back to community. As part of that commitment, a crew of 20 volunteers from the company visited one of our Supported Living homes to help with a much needed face-li.

With the donaon of paint and other materials from The Home Depot, the group worked alongside RSCL staff and members from the Richmond HandyCrew Cooperave to paint the main floor of the home – kitchen, living room, hallways. With the work not quite complete at the end of a long day, the team le a $500 donaon to cover the costs to get the job done.

Thank you to Great Canadian Gaming Corporaon and The Home Depot!

In the fall, a volunteer team from The Home Depot visited one of our day programs. They worked hard throughout the day to brighten a long and gloomy hallway with a new coat of paint. They also donated all the leover supplies – paint, rollers and even ladders which will be put to good use by our HandyCrew.

Thanks again Home Depot!RSCL Views page 8

Stars of Tomorrow Early Learning is a full day child care program located in Steveston Village that was introduced to Supported Child Development through one of our families. The family had recently visited the program and felt it would be a good fit for their child. They requested that I contact the program manager to enquire about the possibility of having their child aend the program.

That first meeng was both welcoming and supporve; Yoki Leung listened, asked quesons and shared the informaon to the rest of the program staff. Because of this centre's openness and willingness to include, as well as support from SCDP, the child is currently aending successfully.

On a recent visit I was able to observe first hand how the Early Childhood Educators at Stars of Tomorrow work collaboravely. The classroom is set up so that children are offered a variety of learning experiences and this was evident during both outdoor and indoor play. The classroom was busy but also calm as the children moved to the different acvies. All the teachers moved around the room checking in with the children and also ensuring that they connected with the child we are supporng. The child was engaged in an acvity with a group of peers; playing and building with a

Collaborave work with Community Child Care Centre

construcon toy. This connued through the visit; no one teacher was tasked with staying with the child. As a team they provided support only when needed - a hand on the shoulder to help calm or direct support with verbal reminders that encouraged independence. This was inclusion at its best!

As they have stated on their website, “We value and respect children of all ethnicity, religions and cultures. Children learn and grow through structured and unstructured play in a safe, nurturing and smulang environment where individuality and uniqueness are celebrated, independence is encouraged, and self-esteem is built. Children are encouraged to express themselves and also provided with opportunies to socialize with their peers and learn socially acceptable behaviors, which fosters a sense of community and meaningful relaonships with others.”

Peer AwarenessThe RSCL Supported Child Development Program recently had the opportunity to engage the enre intermediate student body at Lord Byng Elementary school in a presentaon we call, ”Peer Awareness.” The program is designed to challenge students to consider their role in community, acceptance, and diversity and to learn a lile more about each other. Through a combinaon of stories, a powerpoint presentaon and hands-on acvies, it is inspiring to see the transformaon of understanding for students in what their classmates may experience on a daily basis.

The key points that we hope the children take away from the presentaon are:

1. You're special (I'm special). 2. We all are different and we all belong. 3. Acceptance is acng in ways to make others feel like they belong!4. We all want to have friends.

The children of Lord Byng started the year off with our presentaon so that school acvies can focus on these messages throughout the year. This is a FREE program, customized for specific age groups from Grade 3 to high school. For more informaon about offering a Peer Awareness Workshop for your school, please call 604-279-7040 or [email protected].

We look forward to the opportunity to connue to spread the message of inclusion and acceptance.
