Richmond Theatre’s 110th anniversary celebrations
are fast approaching their finale and there are a
number of events that mark the theatre’s heritage
taking place this autumn. First of these is a
performed reading of our anniversary play Tender
Souls, on Thursday 5 August. The young people
pictured have collected memories of Richmond
Theatre and used them to write a piece of verbatim
theatre that explores and celebrates social and
personal facets of Richmond Theatre’s 110 years.
The play, together with our exhibition, which
opens at the Museum of Richmond on Saturday
18 September, represents the culmination of the
Richmond Theatre Trust and Heritage Lottery
Funded project: Richmond Theatre 110. For
more information on all of Richmond Theatre’s
forthcoming anniversary events, including an
Open Day on Sunday 19 September, please turn to
page 29. We hope that you will join us to celebrate
the theatre’s heritage and 110th anniversary.

SIMON CALLOW CELEBRATES THE REAL MAN BEHIND THE LEGEND
4 5
A new play by JONATHAN BATEDirected by TOM CAIRNS
Rediscover Shakespeare with one of Britain’s best-loved actors.
Simon Callow celebrates the real man behind the legend,
bringing to life both the Bard himself and his unforgettable
characters in this new and definitive stage production.
Following the world-wide success of The Mystery of Charles
Dickens (West End/Broadway) and hot on the heels of his sell-out
hit Dr Marigold & Mr Chops, Callow joins forces with Jonathan
Bate (pre-eminent Shakespeare biographer and editor of the
Royal Shakespeare Company’s Shakespeare: The Complete
Works) and director Tom Cairns (All About My Mother – Old Vic,
NT’s Aristocrats) to fill the stage with Shakespeare’s real
and imagined worlds. A theatrical event to entertain and
stimulate the mind. A warm, classy and jovial night out
not to be missed!

SUMMER FUN FOR ALL THE FAMILY
76
PRIOR TO THE WEST END
Directed by Rufus Norris
Frank Elgin, once a great theatre star, is down on his luck, but
when he is offered a major role by hotshot director Bernie Dodd,
he has the chance to make a major comeback. Will Frank regain
his confidence and save his turbulent career? Will he be supported
in his quest for a second chance by his long-suffering wife?
Martin Shaw and Jenny Seagrove are reunited in the roles
played by Morgan Freeman and Frances McDormand on
Broadway in 2008, and by Bing Crosby and Grace Kelly
in the Oscar-winning film.
Martin Shaw’s last UK theatre tour was the record-breaking run of
A Man for All Seasons. Perhaps best known for his starring roles in
George Gently and the BAFTA award-winning series Judge John
Deed, he will be joined by his co-star from that hugely popular
series, Jenny Seagrove. Seagrove is fresh from critical acclaim
in this year’s West End production of A Daughter’s A Daughter.

AN INSPECTOR MORSE MYSTERY
9
‘WHEN SORROWS COME THEY COME NOT SINGLE SPIES BUT IN BATTALIONS’WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE -
HAMLET, ACT IV, SCENE V
Exactly 35 years after a certain grumpy super-sleuth with an eye
for the ladies and a thirst for real ale made his first appearance
in Colin Dexter’s novel Last Bus to Woodstock, he’s back.
Inspector Morse takes to the stage this autumn in the UK
premiere of the all-new murder mystery, House of Ghosts.
By special arrangement with Colin Dexter and starring Colin
Baker (Dr Who) as Morse, Alma Cullen, the writer behind four of
the hugely successful ITV episodes and director Robin Herford
(Woman in Black), bring the inscrutable detective to audiences
across the UK in what promises to be one of the theatrical
events of the year.
Since Oxford undergraduate days, Morse has regarded theatre
director Lawrence Baxter as the only truly evil man he has ever
met. So what happens when, twenty-odd years later, Morse
finds Baxter at the centre of a murder case that involves the
on-stage death of a young actress?

PENELOPE KEITH and PETER BOWLES star in
By Richard Brinsley Sheridan
Directed by Peter Hall It’s 1775 and the fashionable world descends on Bath, to take the waters,
show off their finery, enjoy the gossip and pursue romance. Amongst
them are some of the most extraordinary comic characters to grace the
stage: the verbally misguided Mrs Malaprop, her absurdly romantic niece
Lydia Languish, the blinkered Sir Anthony Absolute, the blustering
Irishman Sir Lucius O’Trigger and the bumpkin Bob Acres. Throughout
the course of a single day these suitors and schemers and their servants
indulge in an assortment of hilariously extravagant intrigues before
everyone is paired off to their own satisfaction.
Much-loved actress Penelope Keith (Entertaining Angels, The
Importance of Being Earnest, Relatively Speaking and The Good Life
on TV) plays Mrs Malaprop. Peter Bowles is one of Britain’s most
distinguished actors (Separate Tables, The Misanthrope, The Browning
Version, Swansong and The Bounder and The Irish RM for TV).
Penelope Keith and Peter Bowles also starred together in one
of the most watched British sitcoms of all time, To The Manor Born,
with viewing figures of many millions. The Rivals will see them
sparring together on stage for the first time.

The credit crunch hasn’t done Gerald Roth any favours. He’s the
proprietor of Grapes of Roth, an upmarket wine merchant in a
downmarket neighbourhood, and his business is dying faster
than he can say Maximin Grunhauser Abtsberg Kabinett 2008.
Then fate throws Gerald a lifeline. He discovers that his old watch,
left to him by his father, is surprisingly valuable. If he sold it at
auction his money troubles could be over. Unfortunately, the reason
his watch is so collectable is that it was once owned by Hitler’s
Foreign Minister, Joachim von Ribbentrop, whose initials are
engraved inside the case, alongside the sweetest little swastika.
Gerald’s secret dilemma emerges over his family’s Passover dinner,
but it turns out that he isn’t the only Roth with something to hide.
Olivier Award nominees Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran’s
previous works include the much loved comedies Birds of a Feather
and The New Statesman and the long-running TV drama series
Love Hurts and Shine on Harvey Moon.

THE ACCLAIMED NATIONAL THEATRE ADAPTATION
By Keith DewhurstAdapted from the first book of FLORA THOMPSON’S trilogy.
A heart-warming portrayal of 19th-century country life.
Following the success of the award-winning BBC television
series, Bill Kenwright presents a fresh new revival of Keith
Dewhurst’s original stage adaptation of the much-loved Lark Rise
to Candleford. Based on the first book of Flora Thompson’s
trilogy of semi-autobiographical novels, this heart-warming
play was first performed at London’s National Theatre in 1978
and was nominated for two Olivier awards.
Seen through the eyes of young Laura Timms, the play follows a
day in the life and relationships of the farm workers, craftsmen
and gentry of the fictional hamlet of Lark Rise at the end of the
nineteenth century. It is the first day of harvest, and the villagers
celebrate with the simple pleasures of music, song and dance,
creating a moving and evocative picture of a forgotten England.

as part of the Globe’s first ever large-scale UK tour.
Imagining that Mistress Ford and Mistress Page have each fallen for

as much for their husbands’ money as for their personal charms.
Wise to the old rogue’s tricks, the women turn the tables on him
with a series of humiliating assignations and a very damp,
extremely smelly laundry basket.
Gutsy, colloquial and bustling with vivid characters, Shakespeare’s
hilarious and brilliantly constructed farce gave birth to a tradition
that reaches down to the modern TV sitcom. Christopher Benjamin

Both their productions combine sublime musical
scores, played by a live orchestra, with the artistry
and grace for which Russian ballet is renowned.
Prokofiev’s score for Romeo and Juliet inspired
lyrical pas de deux, bustling crowd scenes and
high drama. Against the backdrop of Renaissance
Verona, the tale of the star-crossed teenage
lovers unfolds from their first meeting to
their untimely, tragic end.
With exquisite choreography and Tchaikovsky’s
romantic score, Swan Lake is the world’s best-

Prince Siegfried’s love for Odette, the enchanted
Swan Queen, builds to a soaring climax in which
true love conquers the forces of evil.

at Christmas. This year we are very excited to present
Sleeping Beauty, which has not been performed as a
pantomime at Richmond Theatre since 1960!
Sleeping Beauty tells the tale of a beautiful princess who
pricks her finger and falls into a deep sleep – thanks to an
evil spell cast upon her by the wicked fairy.
Join us this Christmas to find out if her true love will be
able to awaken her and save the kingdom from the evil
fairy’s enchantment.
With star casting to be announced, this year’s pantomime
guarantees show-stopping song and dance, larger than life
characters, colourful costumes and spectacular sparkling sets.
Over 45,000 people saw Richmond Theatre’s pantomime
last Christmas, so don’t get caught snoozing – book your
tickets for the perfect Christmas treat!

ARDAL O’HANLONMON 25 OCTOBER 7.30pm
In his new stand-up show, Ardal O’Hanlon laughs in the face of
mounting adversity - recession, inclement weather, an aging body,

TV shows Father Ted, My Hero and Big Bad World.
JEREMY HARDYTUE 26 OCTOBER 7.30pm
Jeremy’s perhaps best remembered as a much younger man, but
there is nothing he can do about that now. Still alive and able to
speak unaided for lengthy periods, this show will not so much be
a one-man show as an under-staffed cavalcade. Jeremy is best
known for his appearances in News Quiz and Sorry I Haven’t A Clue.
PAUL ZERDIN SPONGE FEST ON TOUR 2010

tricks up his sleeves.

the nation’s favourite cricket commentator.

memories of more than forty years in the game, sharing tales of all
sizes about the biggest names in world cricket; from Sir Ian Botham to
‘Sir’ Geoffrey Boycott, and all the runs, wickets and laughs in between.
He is joined in the passenger seat by his friend and renowned cricket
writer, Peter Hayter.
JULIAN CLARY LORD OF THE MINCE

his 2009 sell-out tours of the UK, Australia and New Zealand!
‘I can’t stop now - I’m 50. The shame of it! This will be an intimate
evening – a celebration, no less, of my 25 years in the camp spotlight:
how I got there and why I refuse to leave. Come and see me before
they put me in a home for tired old knackers.’
‘LOTS OF CAMP SMUT AND DOUBLE ENTENDRES. SIDE-SPLITTINGLY HILARIOUS.’ ★★★★ DAILY MIRROR
JOHN SIMPSON UNRELIABLE SOURCES
SUN 14 NOVEMBER 7.30pm
How the 20th Century Was Reported
One of our greatest reporters gives his vivid and typically opinionated
account of how British media reported key moments in our history.
Simpson will examine ways in which the media has changed and reveal
how it often knowingly – and at times irresponsibly – manipulates
events. With a forensic eye for detail, he will ask whether the press can
ever be truly independent – and, if it can, would we really want it to be?
RICH HALLSUN 28 NOVEMBER 7.30pm
Rich Hall has been charming sell-out audiences for years so it’s a
real thrill to finally welcome this grouchy, deadpan comic genius
to Richmond.
Star of the recent critically acclaimed BBC4 documentary, How the
West Was Lost, Edinburgh Fringe favourite, panel show QI regular
and Perrier Award winner Rich Hall is back on the road.

PUNT & DENNISWED 2 FEBRUARY 7.30pm
RBM presents Punt & Dennis on tour in 2011 in a brand new show
which sees them returning to the live arena after four years. Hugh
Dennis’s popularity has catapulted since their last tour, following
his role in the award-winning Outnumbered (BBC1) and his quick-
witted quips as a regular panellist on Mock the Week (BBC2). He and
Steve Punt also enjoy continued success in the award-winning and

GYLES BRANDRETH THE ONE-TO-ONE SHOW
FRI 4 FEBRUARY 7.30pm
They say all political careers end in tears. In Just a Minute regular
Gyles Brandreth’s case it’s tears of laughter as the actor, author,
One Show reporter, former MP and government whip turns stand-up.
This is Brandreth unleashed on the stars he’s known and the wicked
ways of Westminster (no expenses spared).
‘INCREDIBLY FUNNY, WILDLY INDISCREET.’ DAILY MAIL
THE COUNTERFEIT STONES EXHALE ON MAIN STREET
SAT 5 FEBRUARY 7.45pm
Back Due to Popular Demand
The Counterfeit Stones theatre show is a fantastic musical
mockumentary of the Rolling Stones’ colourful history from 1962
and chronologically covers the biggest hit songs, fashion and vintage
instruments from nearly five decades. As well as much-loved classics,
audiences will be treated to a series of humorous spoof film clips
depicting the events that turned a scruffy blues band into a legend.
You’ll rock with laughter!
