RESEARCH PROMOTION SCHEME
Research Promotion Scheme is aimed to create research ambience in the institutes by promoting research in
engineering sciences and innovations in established and newer technologies; and to generate Masters and
Doctoral degree candidates to augment the supply of research experience faculty and research personnel in the
country.
Research and development activities are considered as an essential component of higher education because of
their role in creating new knowledge and insight and imparting excitement and dynamism to the educational
process, as well as make them need based in view of the national requirements. The objective of this scheme is to
create and update the general research capabilities of the faculty members of the various Technical Institutes. The
proposal should include a specific project theme with a clear statement of the objectives, details of equipments
and other research facilities proposed to be acquired and the expected deliverables from the project.

Strength & Weakness of the Institute
Strength: The department is equipment with Danfoss Centre of Excellence for Climate and Green Energy. The lab equipped with Eddy current Dynamometer test rig and two-wheeler chassis dynamometer which allows students to conduct engine testing at constant speed / load conditions Students get hands on training with engines using petrol, diesel, and their blends. Additionally the effects of additives can be analyzed. Also study the troubles in the ignition system of an automotive vehicle.
Weakness: Need of test set up for electric and hybrid vehicle motor performance in a test bench to simulate the exact road conditions to analyze the mechanical (torque and speed), thermal temperature rise(convection, conduction and radiation) and electrical converter switching devices harmonic losses .

Title of proposal
Electrical and Mechanical Performance Evaluation of Brushless DC Motor for Light Goods Electric Vehicle By Hardware-In-The-Loop (HIL) Testing
Add rows as required
Abstract This proposal discusses a new control strategy to investigate dynamic performance of the Brushless DC (BLDC) motor as traction motor(propulsion) in the electric vehicle (EV) which is under command of considerable dynamic controls(similar to actual road conditions-drive cycles). Desired electromagnetic torque for the BLDC motor derived from the torque feedforward loop based on the optimized results from simulation. By developing hardware as an indirect vector control, the q-axis current is acquired with the known motor torque and d-axis current. Voltage feedforward loop is to achieve d- and q-axis voltages for SVPWM (switch voltage pulse width modulation) generation by BLDC controller according to drive cycle condition. Considering hardware control precision, PID adjustors in small ranges are also included for dynamic compensation of feedforward loops. With consideration of various EV operation conditions (test drive cycles), the MATLAB-based simulation and dSPACE-based experimental setup are deployed to verify the proposed strategy. Based on this experimental setup one can estimate the driving range and power demand from the battery for Light Goods Vehicle (LGV) typically TATA ACE, Mahindra Maximo, Piaggio APE,etc.

Objective - Project Significance / Relevance with ongoing academic activities Study the performance characteristics of BLDC motor for various driving cycle such as Indian Drive Cycle (IDE),
European Drive Cycle (ECE), Federal Test Procedure (FTP).
Top Speed
Torque (max)
Continuous torque
To study the performance of above BLDC motor characteristics for different battery types such as low density
with relatively high performance lithium based batteries.
To study the switching performance of the inverter for the above BLDC motor characteristics.
To study the performance characteristics of an electric Light goods vehicle (LGV) with the above BLDC motor for different drive cycles in test bench.

Project Impact - Expected outcome
Based on the mathematical modeling (equations) for the electric powertrain components characteristics
can be predicted possibly even before the system are tested in reality.
Multifunction tests such as the mechanical characteristics attained by the BLDC motor and electrical
characteristics form the battery (state of charge, depth of discharge, internal resistance) source can be
estimated and evaluated simultaneously which reduces testing time and cost for LGV manufacturers
before the electric powertrain assembled.
Power electronic inverter and device level parasitic losses can be estimated which leads to minimize the
losses in switching characteristics (quality of the BLDC motor controller).
Recent matured technology for battery pack for passenger hybrid and electric cars are lithium based
batteries found on the literatures. Such types of lithium based batteries are Lithium phosphate battery in
which found to be having higher driving range with lower mass density. This test will be best suited for
estimating the internal resistance for the electric LGV battery pack.
The tests can be reproducible and automated.

Different drive cycle conditions will be the input from the computer (based on simulation results-using
DSPACE software) will given to power electronic controller for inverter.
From the battery and inverter the electric power supplied to drive (BLDC motor) mechanical and electric
performance will be evaluated. Also battery depth of discharge and driving range will be predicted.
Also from the same test, additional characteristics of BLDC motor/inverter characteristics such as back-
electromotive force (emf), locked rotor tests, inverter switching harmonics and temperature rise will be
studied in the testing a controlled laboratory environment.
To study and estimate the power electronic module no-load to full-load losses of electric LGV.
Results will be shared with LGV manufacturers to evaluate possibility of manufacturing hybrid and electric
LGV.
