Focus Onhellip In the November installment of Focus Onhellip we hear from Morgan Paine (Art) and Mary Voytek (Art) about a once-in-a-lifetime trip to New York City this past August Both the text and the following artwork are currently on display in the Arts Complex along with other work by the students inspired by their time in NYC

In August of 2019 nine FGCU students and two faculty members went to New York City as a part of the Seidler Family Research and Travel Grant Program The students Farah Alkhadra Marcela Pulgarin Meg Brunner Romina Combe Emily Schaff Mya Hesby Amalia Smith Jennifer Ortega and Tanner Yurchuck all art program majors were selected after a competitive review process by art program faculty

Even with the Museum of Modern Art closed until early fall for a $400 million renovation--New York City is a force of culture with more than 2500 art galleries and multiple world-class art museums Whatever you can imagine or recognize as visual art it is there to be found

Our journey from Fort Myers was more complex than was planned because of bad weather in New York area it took two full days with a stopover in Houston TX to get there Our trip into the City rolled us through the nighttime glory that is Times Square and it was clear that we were in an extraordinary place

Our first full day started with the Metropolitan Museumrsquos Breuer Building and then onto the Metrsquos main building in

Focus Onhellip (continued) Central Park The Metropolitan Museum of Art is a complex so large and comprehensive that a weekrsquos worth of looking thinking and wandering in its galleries would not exhaust its holdings We saw remarkable work ranging from Impressionistrsquos works to Armor to Abstract Expressionism and glorious works from the Ancient World

In the afternoon we traveled the length of the elevated urban art venuepark known as the High Line We saw New York Cityrsquos newest cultural venue a $400 million edifice named ldquoThe Shedrdquo which expects to host visual art exhibitions concerts and performances by both emerging and established cultural practitioners

We finished the day at the Whitney Museum of American Art in the Meatpacking district seeing the 2019 version of the Whitney Biennale arguably the most recognized re-occurring exhibition of contemporary art in America

Saturday took us to the Jewish Museum then to Frank Lloyd Wrightrsquos Guggenheim Museum and The Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum all venues on 5th Avenue Further down the avenue we visited the Frick Collection where one stretch of wall showed off paintings by Goya Rembrandt Velaacutezquez and Vermeer We returned to the Met to see an outdoor roof installation by Berlin-based artist Alicja Kwade entitled ParaPivot a site specific installation overlooking the greenery of Central Park as well as the impressive skyline vistas We then headed downtown for dinner in Chinatown and a stroll through lights and crowds of Little Italy

Sunday took us to the Brooklyn Museum of Art the home to an important international collection of decorative arts and old master paintings It has become a center for feminist art owning the important Judy Chicago masterwork ldquoThe Dinner Partyldquo The day also included a walk through the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens and a visit to The New Museum of Contemporary Art on the Lower East Side We had an Indian group dinner before attending a performance by the Blue Man Group where we sat in the ldquorain ponchordquo section next to the stage

Monday we took a Hop-On Hop-Off double-decker bus tour that took us the length of Manhattan into Harlem then back into Manhattan We took a boat ride around the Statue of Liberty and then took a night- time trip over the East River into Brooklyn and back impressed by NYCrsquos jutting skyscraper skyline

Our return day was structured as independent time Group members got to back to revisit favorite locales or seek out undiscovered things and perhaps some shopping The trip back to the Newark airport took the same number of FGCU community members back as had arrived five days earlier but they were different people than the ones who had flown to New York City

Making a Self Jan van Eyck and the Origins of the Artist

Thursday Nov 7 at 5pm U Tobe Recital Hall A light reception to follow in the Arts Complex Lobby (across from the Music Building)

Our sense of what makes artists special has Renaissance roots in the work of Jan van Eyck Celebrated as a brilliant pioneer of realistic painting he was equally innovative as a craftsman of his own reputation Without the letters printed publicity and exhibitions that would fuel the fame of later artists he argued for his unique mastery in paint alonemdashand only partly as a display of skill More original and intriguing are his layers of subtle effort to absorb and challenge an observer

Dr Alfred Acres taught at the University of Pennsylvania the University of Oregon and Princeton University before joining the faculty at Georgetown University He is currently the Chair of the Department of Art and Art History and the Wright Family Term Associate Professor in Art History
