Lifetime Achievement - Bruce Kornely To illustrate all of the contributions of our first Lifetime Achievement Award, Bruce Kornely, would take an epic movie, so we’re going to con-dense it all into a highlight reel. Bruce has been a member of the Branch River Riding Club for 56 years. He has served 19 terms as president, 19 years as horse show chairman, and often gives up showing his own horse to better serve the club. Bruce has served 13 terms as president of NEWPHA (Northeastern Wisconsin Pleasure Horse Association), has written the by-laws for the association, and has found time to show his own horse occasionally. Perhaps the event most connected to Bruce is Horse-O-Rama. He has been the treasurer for Horse-O-Rama for 28 years, has spent endless hours making the event successful, and was instrumental in getting the event incorporated. Under Bruce’s management, the Horse-O-Rama organiza-tion has been able to raise over $300,000 which has been invested in the Manitowoc County Equine Facili-ties. Bruce judges many 4-H and open shows, is still involved with showing and breeding Arabians and Half-Arabians, and still coaches many youth. All of this makes one wonder, how does Bruce find time to sleep!

Lifetime Achievement - Fran Gross When Fran Gross was around ten years old, his father told him he was old enough to help on the farm, and he had the choice of either driving the tractor or walking behind a team of horses. Fran chose the team of horses and ended up being a very good teamster as just a child. That

love for horses turned into a passion, and Fran has been showing county and state fairs in the Midwest for over forty years. He annually participates in the Great Circus Parades driving horses pulling circus wagons with live, wild animals in the wagons! Fran has shown horses at many city festivals, weddings, anniversaries, funerals, hayrides, sleigh rides, pumpkin patches, Christmas tree farm rides, and parades. For many years, Fran was a highlight at Midwest Horse Fair with his four abreast team of Percherons. He would demonstrate “spinning the top” where four horses, side by side, would trot toward one side of the wagon all the way around in a tight circle with the wagon staying in place. Fran loves promoting draft horses to youth. He has taken many youth under his wing and has taught them how to care for and drive horses. Fran is a charter member of the Jefferson County Draft Horse Association and has served as its president. You will not find a man more dedicated to the horse industry than Fran Gross.

Director of the Year - Karen Kroll The Director of the Year, Karen Kroll, is one of the most active members of the Wisconsin Horse Council. Her committee work spans the entire gamut of horse council business. Karen has served as council secretary, presi-dent, and has served on and chaired many council committees. She has worked with the DNR to promote horse trails, and she regularly informs the council of public meetings, so the horse industry can be heard about trail use. Karen understands that for the horse industry to thrive, equestrians need to stay informed and active. Karen is a driving force for the Wisconsin Horse Council and gives tirelessly of herself and her time for the betterment of the equine industry.

Judge of the Year - Tia Koehler The Wisconsin Horse Council’s judge of the year, Tia Koehler, started judging around nine years ago. She junior judged under former judges of

the year, Ron Miller and Dana Panella, and was a ring steward and scribe for many of the quarter horses shows where she learned from as many pros as she could. She tries to treat every contestant with the utmost respect. As Tia say, “To that exhibitor, today may be the biggest show of their life, just getting in the ring may have been the biggest challenge.” Tia takes personal pride in her judging, always trying to help the youth when she can, and she always keeps smiling. She feels it’s a privilege to work with the youth in the state every summer and encourage them to rise up to their personal greatness. She has judged in 15 Wisconsin counties and has also given clinics and educational talks. She has revisited the majority of the counties in one way or another to reed-ucated or return as a judge. When asked about her personal background, Tia responded with the following: “I do not feel my personal ac-complishments in the arena or as an exhibitor create any greatness as a judge. I feel watching the exhibitors who have taken my advice, challenged themselves, and found the very best bond with their horse is the accom-

plishment. I judge with heart; I judge with fresh eyes for every class. I help the kids where I can because they are the future of our horse indus-try. I feel every horse has greatness, every horse has a place. It may not be in the show arena or trail; it might be in somebody’s back yard be-ing their best friend for the rest of their life. I love being a horse show judge and clinician, but mostly, a mom to horseshow daughters.

Horseperson of the Year Award - Liz Rice-Beula (Tie) Liz Rice-Beula is the owner and trainer at Victory Lane Riding Academy in Marathon, Wisconsin. Lessons and training Hackney Ponies and Saddlebreds may be her primary job, but she takes it much further with doing youth camps and clinics, and judging shows as a Wisconsin Horse Council certified judge. Liz has had over thirty years of training, instructing, and show experience. She has won many world champion-ships with a variety of breeds in a whole range of disciplines, from saddle seat to western to driving. Liz still stays very grounded. She welcomes both youth and adults, beginners and experienced showmen, from 4-H level to Class A showing. Liz’s expertise goes far beyond just educating. She provides a wonderful learning environment for both beginners and experienced riders. Liz is able to make every lesson fun while keeping safety a priority. Liz is also a huge advocate for promoting the breeds she trains. In the Saddlebred world, if a horse is not World Champion material, they often end up sold at auctions or left out to pasture. Often these very well bred horses are forgotten about and registration papers are lost. Liz has found many a diamond in the rough and rehabbed them into lesson horses, re-homed to loving homes forever homes, and even won World Champion titles by re-training them. To help decrease the number of Hackneys and Saddlebreds with lost papers, Liz has become a strong advocate for micro chipping every new horse that comes to her barn. One of her students, Sam, probably summarized Liz the best by saying, “Liz doesn’t just teach us things about how to show and ride. She teaches us life lessons as well. Liz is like family to all of us at the barn. Whenever us kids need help either in school or with life problems, she can always offer good advice. I love the amazing sportsmanship and teamwork she teaches.” Horseperson of the Year Award - Jackie Devine-Pertzborn (Tie) Jackie Devine-Pertzborn has been supporting the equine industry in Wisconsin her entire life. She has been a showman, breeder, member,

officer, and chairman in multiple associations and, in the last decade, a strong mentor and role model for youth and adults. Over the past ten years Jackie has developed a royalty program for the Wisconsin Pony of Americas Club. Youth have an opportunity to apply for available royalty seats. The applicants are judged by individuals independent from the club, and the chosen royalty are crowned at the annual awards banquet. Jackie has made sure this pro-gram is not about what is given to these youth but what these youth can give back to the organization and commu-nities. Throughout the year these royalty proudly wear their sashes and crowns representing the Wisconsin Pony of the Americas at tack sales, equine events, boarding and training barns, feed stores, parades, food pantries, nursing homes, radio stations, television stations, and newspapers throughout Wisconsin. Jackie encourages and supports these efforts – sometimes by even driving the youth to the events. All of these promotional actions by the youth and Jackie provide the public and others within the horse industry an admirable look at horses, youth and volunteering for

something one loves. Jackie’s efforts are so important in the equine industry, because without youth involvement, the industry has no future

Equine of the Year - Tinker owned by Carol Takacs While we often hear about charities raising money to support equines, this year’s Wisconsin Horse Council’s Equine of the Year, Tinker, does just the opposite. Tinker uses all of his 2 and ½ feet of height to raise money for the Salvation Army. Tinker also visits many clients at an in-tergenerational day care serving children, the frail elderly, adults with cognitive and physical disabilities, and those with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. For many of the young people at the center, Tinker is their first exposure to an equine. For many older adults at the center, Tinker brings back memories of growing up on a farm. Many of the clients in the Alzheimer’s and dementia program can be heard laughing and talking with Tinker. When Tinker is volunteering for the Salvation Army, he performs many tricks to gather more donations. He understands commands such as “pick it up,” “move your head,” and “hold.” Knowing these commands allows him to hold the bell, shake the bell and pick up a banner that says, “Thank you Merry Christmas.” Tinker sometimes receives 10 times more than the average bell ringer! Tinker is a real celebrity with over 1500 face book friends. He also has appeared in the Mil-waukee Journal Sentinel, Good Morning America’s site, Associated Press, Country Woman magazine, countless news-papers throughout the country and the Stars and Stripes. Carol Takacs, Tinker’s owner, knows she’s very lucky. Carol says, “It’s such a privilege to own and work with such an amazing little horse and we are blessed to have him in out lives. He has brought so much happiness, delight, bliss and hope into the lives of so many.”

Lifetime Achievement - Kristin Urban Every baseball team wants a utility player, and Kristin Urban can easily claim that title for the Arabian breed. Kristin has served the Wisconsin Desert Horse Association for 30 years, and has served on every position of that organization. She has promoted the Arabian horse by working in booths at Midwest Horse Fair for both the WDHA and WAHA. She has designed flyers and brochures for the Arabian events, chaired many of the shows as well as acting as the announcer for various activities. Kristin has been a longtime horse owner, breeder, and competitor. She has bred Class A Championship, Regional, and National champion horses that have won awards for their owners. In 2015 Kristin was a key coordinator in the successful breed promotion at Horse-O-Rama that garnered a national win in the breed promotion category. This award as presented at the National Arabian Horse Association Convention in Tulsa OK.

Mondovi schools welcome new equestrian team

From The Country Today & Pat Mcknight MONDOVI — An equestrian team is the newest athletic club in the Mondovi School District. The fledgling team of five riders from the district’s middle and high school recently finished its first year of competition in the Wisconsin Interscholastic Horsemanship Association.

The team started when local horsewoman Jean Sandberg looked into whether a riding team could be formed through the school district.

“For several years, I had heard of different schools having all kinds of teams other than the usual football, basketball, volleyball, tennis, etc.,” Sandberg said. “Because our family has always been involved with horses, I wondered about horse teams.

Doing research on the Internet, Sandberg found several horse show associations connected with school districts, but only WIHA offered both pleasure and timed event classes.

Founded in 2007, WIHA promotes horsemanship education for students in grades six through 12 and sponsors activities to encourage interscholastic participation with adult leadership.

Sandberg found WIHA’s values embodied the goals, philosophy and standards that were in line with what she envisioned for a team. The goal of WIHA is to get as many schools as possible to recognize horseback riding and handling as a sport and allow the students to earn an athletic letter.

“Some of the riders don’t compete in any other sports, and it is their chance to shine just as others do in other sports,” Sandberg said. “Because the age of our riders is contingent on being in sixth through 12th grade, many of our student riders are too young to meet the high school lettering requirements. Those riders not in high school receive a participation pin and anxiously await the time when they too can become letter winners.”

After Sandberg found there was interest in forming an equestrian club in the Mondovi area, she and the group went before the district’s school board and asked to have the club approved.

“After presenting all the pros and cons to the board, we were given the go-ahead,” Sandberg said, “and so, plans began in earnest.”

The five members of the team are Alissa Hopp, 10th grade; Kira Lee, eighth grade; Autumn Morrow, seventh grade; Emma Sandberg, seventh grade; and Brooke Vinck, 12th grade.

Alissa became a member of the team because she wanted to enjoy a favorite pastime that was recognized by her school.

“Being a part of the first ever Mondovi Equestrian Team means so much to me,” Alissa. “I feel like we are such an incredibly strong team and I am so thankful for everybody.”

WIHA divides the state into districts where the school teams compete with other teams for the chance to show at the state level. Riders compete for an overall team score. Located in Buffalo County, the Mondovi team is in District 9 along with Jackson, La Crosse, Monroe and Trempealeau counties.

.”The newly formed Mondovi Equestrian Team recently completed their first year of competition in the Wisconsin Interscholastic Horsemanship Association. Team members include Alissa Hopp, Kira Lee, Autumn Morrow, Emma Sandberg and Brooke Vinck.

Time to Ride Challenge Kicks Off May 1st The 2017 Time to Ride Challenge launches, connecting new enthusiasts to horses.

The 2017 Time to Ride Challenge began May 1st for the $100,000 grassroots contest’s fourth year. Already, hundreds of events nationwide are planned by hosts who share the mission of connecting brand-new enthusiasts to horses. Stables, clubs and businesses are working toward growing their own reach and client base while earning cash and prizes and, most im-portantly, nurturing the next generation of participants in the equine industry. On a beautiful Monday morning in Mineral Wells, Texas, families pulled up to 2 Irons Ranch to interact with horses for the first time. Stick horse races, educational activities, grooming, saddling and riding awaited the enthusiastic new participants. A min-iature donkey welcomed even the smallest fans with a soft nose to pet at the perfect height. Ranch owner and manager Don-na Waldrup enthused, “We hosted our first event yesterday and it was awesome fun! The children are very excited about com-ing back to ride!” The Challenge takes place through September 30th and registration is still open!

All About the Horse by Pat Stevenson

On May 6th, District 5 of the Wisconsin Horse Council, held a horse event at Theisen's in Sparta titled "All About The Horse." The purpose of this event was to allow adults and children the opportunity to be around hors-es. Informational and educational handouts were provided by a number of national and state associations. Drawings for gift certificates were also held.

Those bringing horses included Susie Weiss with her Morgan, Ed Johnson with a Quarter Horse, and Todd Waldera who

brought a Quarter Horse mare with a foal. Mike McGowan also brought in two Quarter Horses, including Cisco the 2016 WHC Equine award winner.

This event was the first of its kind in the area and brought in an estimated 300 people. Lance Wiersema, manager at Theisen's, provided the arena panels for the pens along with tote bags for the handouts and treats for the kids to feed the horses. Susie Weiss commented that her Morgan had more treats in one day than he had in his entire life!

The Sparta Area Cancer Society (SACS) was also on hand, selling hot dogs, to support their cause. It turned out to be very beneficial to them as well.

Two brothers having fun.

Why should I belong to WHC? This is the only organization that is here for the horse and the people who own them or simply love them. We are not a breed organization, a saddle club, or a riding discipline. We exist solely for the welfare of the horse and the betterment of our industry as a whole. Membership in WHC connects you with other horse people who share your concerns and brings you to a broader view of the equine industry. The strength of our voice is in direct proportion to the size of membership. How many members we have is what always matters to officials. Often, people belong to organizations in relation to their profession; you should belong to this organization in relation to your passion. WHC represents the horse people of Wisconsin, and the horse people of Wisconsin need to support their state organization through membership.

Have we got the DEALS for you! On June 4, 2017 the Friends of Governor Dodge-Equestrians will be hosting their 3rd annual spring fundraiser. This year partici-pants will ride the beautiful trails of Governor Dodge State Park in hopes of col-lecting a winning poker hand! In addition to a great excuse to get in the saddle and hit the trails, our “Ante Up for Governor Dodge” event will feature a delicious picnic lunch and the opportunity to take home some GREAT raffle prizes. No knowledge of the rules of poker is required. No horse? No problem! Our park naturalist will be leading a nature hike with a similar theme. The cost, whether you ride or hike, is $30 per participant. Proceeds will be used to support equine projects at the park. Register by May 15 to get a free T shirt. To sweeten the DEAL even further, the DNR will waive vehicle sticker fees and trail pass fees for this event! We are betting that you won’t want to miss this fun event for a great cause. See you on June 4th at Governor Dodge State Park.

Can’t attend? How about being a sponsor

Recreation Opportunities Analysis Updates - May 2017 The Recreation Opportunities Analysis will examine existing outdoor-based recreation opportunities and future recreation needs in eight regions throughout Wisconsin and identify future priorities for providing high-quality recreation experiences and the potential role of DNR properties in helping to meet these priorities.

The department hosted three open house meetings in Arbor Vitae, Park Falls, and Antigo on April 24, 25, and 26, respectively. These open houses gathered public comments, ideas, concerns, and perspectives on the existing recreation opportunities available in the region and future needs. The open houses were also provided an opportunity for the public to provide comments and perspectives on existing and potential future recreation opportunities at the Northern Highlands American Legion State Forest. These meetings were well attended with over 150 people giving helpful feedback to DNR staff.

Materials viewed at these public open houses can be found online at dnr.wi.gov, keyword "ROA”.

The department also developed a public input form (both online and hardcopy versions) that was available from April 10 through May 6. Over 2,700 people submitted comments, and DNR staff are currently reviewing the results and will create a document summarizing the public comments.

Additional public open houses will be held in the future in all seven other regions of the state. Dates and location will be announced when these open houses are scheduled.

For more information regarding the ROA process, contact Cameron Bump, DNR parks and recreation specialist, at 715-839-2786 or via email at [email protected].

NEWDA Southern Chapter News Release Kris Blacklock, NEWDA Southern Chapter

NEW Dressage Association Inc (NEWDA) Southern Chapter is serious about having FUN! We actively encourage handlers and riders of all ages to learn and use classical dressage fundamentals with their horses, regardless of age, breed or discipline and have fun along the way. In January we held a Dressage Word Search and ‘Draw It’ Contest for youth and adult members and guests. Kids were asked to draw a picture of a horse in his/her paddock; Adults drew a lesson plan for a freshly groomed arena. Congratulations to Jessica Gorman 1st place (13-18 yr old); Cecelia Conway 1st place (Adult Amateur) and Stacey Gorman Honorable Mention (Adult Amateur).

In March, the How Fuzzy was S/He Photo Contest (Shedding Out, A Good Roll in the Mud, Glad It’s Spring and Deworming) yielded expressive de-worming face and shedding out photos. Siboney Jet Takoda, Kris Blacklock’s 18 yr. old Rocky Mountain Horse exhibitsan animated personality by wrinkling his entire face for several minutes when the vet arrives, if anyone is getting medicine and especially after his spring/fall deworming.

Samantha Bailey, 7 yr old daughter of Michelle and Ryan Bailey captured SKM Timeless (Seiko), their 23 yr old Morgan shedding out. Adult Amateur Stacey Gorman documented Paint A Masquerade’s pile of fur after a spring grooming session.

You and your equine are welcome to join in on our FUN! In June, enter our Dressage Photo Contest (Groundwork/Under Saddle,

Preparing for a Show, Special Event or Funniest Moment). In September, contestants are asked to create dressage artwork of choice (coloring book page clip art, pencil drawing, origami, painting, quilt top or pillow, glass work, garden art, jewelry, metal sculpture, etc) illustrating dressage and submit a photo of your artwork and include a brief narrative as to what inspired you. For creative authors, in December you can enter our

Dressage Essay Contest. Contestants are asked to write an essay on any of the following topics (Groundwork – Gaining respect or Pre-Ride checklist, Benefits of dressage, Who do you admire and why? Or What book or article inspired your horsemanship).

NEWDA Southern Chapter is a friendly energetic group of equine enthusiasts throughout Southern Wisconsin who love to create opportunities for our members and guests to learn and engage in the sport of dressage for their enjoyment, their improvement and for the benefit of their horse(s), through education, live and virtual clinics plus live and virtual competition within an atmosphere of mutual respect and support. There are no boundaries or limits. We encourage our youth, adult amateurs and professionals to dream, achieve and succeed by supporting each other regardless of tack or saddle preference. We ask members to be ambassadors for all aspects of dressage within the equestrian community within Wisconsin and across state lines. ‘Join’ our NEWDA Southern Chapter Facebook group. Visit the New Dressage Association \Inc www.newdressage.org to see all that NEWDA offers YOU!

Roselawn Elementary THANK YOU

The Roselawn Elementary fourth grade teachers and students in Chetek, WI, would like to thank you for sponsoring the Wisconsin Agriculture booklets. The materials are comprehensive and up to date, and the activities are creative and make it fun to learn about agriculture.

Word search puzzles are fun as well as vocabulary boosters. The recipes were interesting and some of the students tried them at home. We love to “taste” some of the lessons, such as cranberries and maple syrup. The variety of information and activities kept the students interest.

Again, thank you! We look forward to using these booklets year after year.

Sincerely,

Elle Bogdan, Ellen Schubbe, Mike Ohde

And all the children that enjoyed the books.

Hope everyone enjoyed the Midwest Horse Fair. It was a great weekend with excellent weather for it. Now with that behind us all the show season and other events are coming up.

We will be at Old World Wisconsin in July 29-30 but might be doing something we haven’t done in many years. We will be cutting and picking up the loose hay. The fields might be cut ahead of time so that the hay can dry then we will rake it so the other side dries then pick it up to store in the barn for the winter. In September 9-10 we will again be plowing, disking and dragging the fields. In October we will be logging and taking the logs to the saw mill with the scraps being taken to the villages for use next year. The Omnibus will be out giving rides at Old World Wisconsin.

All our appearances at Old World Wisconsin are made possible by the grant we receive from the Wisconsin Horse Council. This grant helps defray the cost of fuel to get to Old World Wisconsin.

On behalf of the Jefferson County Draft Horse Association, I would like to thank the Wisconsin Horse Council for selecting us to receive one of the grants. It is greatly appreciated by the teamsters to help offset the cost of transporting their horses and equipment to Old World Wisconsin.

For McGowan, long road back leads full circle by Ted Black

“There was just something about the chemistry that me and Down Town Allen had,” McGowan, 37, said, having piloted the Casey homebred to 21 wins and roughly 90 percent of her career earnings. “Each time I climbed aboard her, she knew what to expect from me and I knew what to expect from her. It didn’t matter if we were going 4 1/2 furlongs or seven furlongs, we just had complete confidence in one another. I rode Russell Road a few times, but I never got along with any horse like I did with Down Town Allen. She was just special to me and always will be.”

McGowan has ridden other horses for Casey in his return, and the trainer praised the rider for his character and personality as much as his skills in the irons. Casey said the two have been friends for a long time.

“Matt and I go back a long ways,” Casey said. “He’s a great friend. I’m glad that he came back. We had a lot of good times when Down Town Allen was running up here and winning stakes, but even when he’s not riding for me, I have a lot of respect for Matt. We’ve done a lot of things together outside the track. I know it was tough on him sitting out a while, but he really wanted to come back. I don’t think he’s lost anything. He still looks confident on a horse and he’s out there to get the most out of a horse that he can, whether it’s for me or anyone else that puts him up.”

McGowan notched his first career stakes victory aboard Sweet Music for owner-breeder Naomi Long, also his mother-in-law, and last month he guided Hot Mic to a 21-1 upset in the Coin Collector Stakes for state-bred three-year-olds for Figgins and Long. Hot Mic had won his career debut just three weeks earlier, then overhauled the speedy filly Cuttin Edge Tech in the lane to score between horses in an emotional win for both trainer and rider.

“Winning that race for Ollie and my mother-in-law, Naomi, meant that my career had come full circle,” McGowan said. “I know Ollie has always been fond of that horse and he always showed me some ability in the mornings. I think his best races are going to be longer. I like the way he finishes and I can’t wait to see how he does stretching out to two turns here. But that race meant a lot to me. I’ve always been grateful that Ollie and Naomi had faith in my ability to ride and that win truly meant I had come full circle.”

Figgins had grown attached to Hot Mic in the weeks leading up to his career debut, and he stood next to the horse in the winner’s circle with tears visibly welling up in his eyes. Figgins had also welcomed McGowan back to the races with open arms and the jockey’s morning gallops aboard Hot Mic were equally as important to the rider as they were to the juvenile colt, gelded in the weeks between his debut score and his stakes victory.

“Matt has always been an aggressive rider and I don’t think the time away from the races affected him at all,” Figgins said. “He’s still looking to put your horse in the race early. I thought he rode Hot Mic perfectly the first start and then he rode another great race on him in the Coin Collector. He’s always done well for me. I’ve always been fond of Hot Mic. He’s such a neat little horse. I’m glad that his first stakes win was Matt’s first stakes win back. I’m hoping they win a few more together.”

Though both Figgins and McGowan seemed more eager to see how Hot Mic, a son of Fiber Sonde, would fare going two turns, you have to run in the races the track uses, which means that he will race on Wednesday, May 17 in a 4 1/2 furlong sprint.

Figgins said the Long homebred would get some time off after the race to begin preparing for the state-bred stakes this summer and fall, which means that if he and McGowan are to win a few more stakes together, they’ll have to wait

MADISON — If there’s an “adorable” gauge for horse, Tinker, the 2017 Horse of the Year is a solid 10. People at the recent Midwest Horse Fair were charmed by the 18-year-old miniature horse owned by Carol and Joseph Takacs of Allenton.

Tinker is a professional charmer. For his entire life he has brought smiles to the faces of many including those in nursing homes, rehab centers, and mental health facilities to mention only a few, says Carol Takacs. Tinker also is an aggressive philanthropist having learned how to ring the bell for the Salvation Army Red Kettle fund-raiser.

“He’ll pick up the bells with his lips and shake them,” Takacs said. “When he’s done he'll put them down and look for a carrot. Sometimes he’ll try to get that carrot after a short ring so I won’t give it to him every time.”

So far, the bell ringing has been confined to places in Wisconsin. But the whole family is wondering if this charita-ble trick may not lead to bigger venues. Times Square in New York? How about an international appearance in Canada? No telling how much good Tinker can do.

It’s hard to know how much money Tinker has raised over the years for the Salvation Army but it’s safe to say the sum is significant. Philanthropy combined with year-round performances and appearances in many charitable spaces earned Tinker the Horse of the Year award from the Wisconsin Horse Council. Tinker and Carol were recog-nized officially during a ceremony in the Coliseum during the horse fair.

“We have an act that includes Tinker, my Tennessee Walking horse, and our Papillon,” she said. “Although it is a little dull in the winter and Tinker hangs around looking for something to do.”

There are many opportunities. The little horse is invited to birthday parties, parades, fairs, festivals and special events of all types. It keeps the Takacs family busy and Carol is quick to point out Joseph is the logistics genius be-hind the show. Joseph is happy to stay out of the public eyes and keep the whole train on the tracks from the background.

Tinker literally came with the farm. They were out looking for a horse property when they found the land near Allenton. The former owner had Miniature horses and both the Takacs fell in love with the tiny fur-balls. Tinker became part of the deal and stayed with the farm.

“I love training and working with animals,” Takacs said. “When I get home from work I head out to start messing with the animals.”

Takacs said Tinker was sweet and affectionate from the very start. He is always willing to try something new in the way of tricks and has a trick inventory of jumping up on stands, kneeling, bowing, and following routines. Tinker is a natural showman, she said. He appears to like the attention he gets from the public and being in the spotlight.

“It’s a privilege to own and work with such an amazing little horse and we are blessed to have him in our lives,” Takacs said. “He has brought so much joy and hope into the lives of so many. He is special and continues to give all that he can.”

UW-River Falls Colt Sale breaks records From The Country Today

The 41st annual UWRiver Falls Colt Sale on May 6 was one for the record books. The 146 registered bidders from 13 states and Canada, England and Mexico was typical, but several sales records were broken, including total sales, which topped $291,000. Also, sales of 2yearold horses averaged $5,344 and sales of the UWRiver Falls lesson horses averaged $8,023.

Gunnersspecialwoman, a 2yearold palomino filly sired by Gunners Special Nite, sold for $20,000. The next highest sale was $15,000 for the 2yearold sorrel filly Tinker Be Ruf, sired by Tinker With Guns. Excellent genetics likely played a role in the record sales.

“Many of this year’s horses were sired by some of the most elite stallions in the reining horse industry,” said Nathan O’Connor, faculty associate and director of the UWRiver Falls ColtsinTraining Program. “In addition to Gunners Special Nite and Tinker With Guns, other sires included Einstein’s Revolution, Whiskey N Diamonds, Wimpy’s Little Step and A Sparkling Vintage.”

The sale is the culmination of the semesterlong course, “Principles of Training Horses.” In the course, taught by O’Connor, students turn barely halter broken and never saddled or ridden colts into ones that are well trained under saddle.

Amber Yager, a double major in animal science and dairy science from Highland, trained Tinker Be Ruf and worked under O’Connor as a teaching assistant for one section of the course. Yager said she enjoyed watching the students overcome something they were struggling with and grow with their colts.

“Some of the baby colts came in hardly halter broke and really made their students work for it that first couple of weeks. This class is a lot of work for three credits, but these credits are without a doubt worth every hour,” said Yager, who graduated earlier this month and will soon join Purina Animal Nutrition as a livestock production specialist.

Each year, two students are selected to serve as sales managers and are given responsibility for all marketing and advertising for the sale. The 2017 sales managers were Cara Schmidt and Kayla Oelhafen. Both are animal science majors. Schmidt is from Chaska, Minn., and Oelhafen from Allenton. Oelhafen said that preparing for the sale is timeconsuming and very stressful at times, but she loved doing it.

“The job has taught me so much about the horse industry that I would not have learned otherwise,” she said.

“I’m so proud of our students and how much they accomplished this semester,” O’Connor said. “They put their hearts and minds into preparing the horses for this year’s sale, and it definitely paid off on sale day. This was definitely the best set of horses that we have ever presented at auction.”

For more information about the sale and the horses sold, visit http://www.uwrfcoltsale.com. Next year’s sale is set for Saturday, May 5.
