Ridgewood Avenue Discovery Series – Rules and Procedures

Registration – The registration period begins on April 11th, 2019 and closes on April 29th,

2019. Follow these two easy steps to register:

Register ONLINE at https://register.rasdiscovery.springmini.2019 Pay via PayPal (All payments must be made online)

1. Payment – Pay Pal ONLY. NO CASH. NO CHECKS. Your child’s spot in his/her desired class will

only be held once payment has been received online. Payments must be received by the close of

registration, otherwise your child’s spot will not be held.

2. Fees- Transaction fees have been included in the price of each class. Late registrations will be

accepted on a case to case basis and will include a $10 late fee.

3. Full Classes - Classes will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. Once a class has reached its

maximum, we will open a Wait List. Email [email protected] to be added to the Wait List once

a class is full. If spots in the class become available or a second section is added, we will offer those

spots starting at the top of the Wait List.

4. Refunds and Reimbursements – Absolutely no refunds will be issued after the close of registration.

If an issue arises with a class, please contact Jessica Walsh and the issue will be addressed with the

instructor. No refunds can be given once registration closes.

5. Change Requests – Absolutely no class change requests will be honored after the close of

registration.

6. School closings - Discovery is in session when school is in session. If school is cancelled or

closed, Discovery is not in session. If school closes early for emergency reasons, class will be held on

the designated make up day and there will be no refund.

7. Classes cancelled by teacher - If a teacher must cancel class, you will be notified via e-mail ASAP

so it is important that you provide an active e-mail address.

8. Make-Up Classes - Regardless of teacher illness or emergency closings, there is only ONE make-up

class per session. Additional make up classes, if needed, will be added on to the end of the session.

9. Class Start and End Times –Promptness at the start of class and prompt pick-up at the end of class

is expected. Parents are responsible for the supervision and safety of their child prior to the start of

class and at the end of class.

10. Disruptive Behavior – Disruptive behavior will not be tolerated. All students are expected to be

respectful and courteous to each other, to the teachers, and to the building before, during, and after

class time. If a student does not follow the teacher's rules, s/he will be asked to leave and may be

asked not to attend the remaining classes. No refunds will be given for disruptive behavior.

11. Aftercare – Please indicate if your child is in aftercare on a day they have Discovery. Aftercare will be

provided with a list of participating students. You agree to allow aftercare to release students for class.

12. Confirmation – Confirmation emails will be sent as soon as possible after the close of registration.

You will be notified of room assignments and reminded of class dates as part of the confirmation

process. All classes will be held on site at Ridgewood Avenue School.

TUESDAY CLASSES

CONSTRUCTING STEM, ROBOTICS & ELECTRONICS Grades: All Day: Tuesday Time: 3:15-4:15 4 weeks Cost: $115

Students will spend 4 weeks doing hands on projects in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. During the first

weeks, students will study electricity, electronics, and build a circuit to take home. The last two weeks, students will build

a simple robot to take home. During this workshop, students will construct a fun, simple (not really, but with instruction, it

seems that way) Robot. Students will study Robotics by building a simple robot. They will learn Robotics components,

gears, motors, and electricity. Students will review the engineering design methodology. Help your child take the next

step in learning Robotics. Join ConstructU in Constructing STEM, Robotics and Electronics.

Instructor: Monica Burch, author of “Inside Robotics” and “Speedy’s Strength,” created ConstructU in 2003 to expose

kids to the exciting world of STEM by offering fun, hands-on workshops. She has a Bachelor of Science in Electrical

Engineering (BSEE) from The University of Alabama. She specialized in Power and worked with such companies as Gulf

Power, Salt River Project, and Colorado UTE for Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). Later, she worked as a

software engineer and worked with companies such as Dow Jones and Merrill Lynch.

CRAYOLA ARTIST PASSPORT New Class! Grades: All Day: Tuesday Time: 3:15-4:15 4 weeks Cost: $125 Embark on an around-the-world cultural adventure- explore far-off places and learn about the

people who live there, from the Americas to Polynesia, from the cosmopolitan to the countryside.

Experiment with Crayola® products while trying art techniques developed by local artists and

artisans. Make different masterpieces each week such as drums, masks, canvases, gift bags, buses,

and more! Bring the unique creations home and build a globally-inspired art gallery.

Instructor: to be provided by Mad Science. Mad Science is the world’s leading science enrichment

provider. We pride ourselves on the unique and interactive way of teaching students how to make science fun! Using an

extremely hands-on and enthusiastic approach, we give students the chance to become Mad Scientists. We have FUN

down to a science!!

FASHION ACADEMY New Class! Grades: All Day: Tuesday Time: 3:15-4:15 4 weeks Cost: $85

Are you a trend setter? Then our all new fashion forward class is for you! This spring you can create one-of-a-kind

wearable garments of your very own and make your design dreams a reality. We’ll teach you all you need to know about

garment design and creation, from choosing a design and sketching, to final fitting! This class is suitable for beginner to

advanced-level designers, as we will be sewing by hand! To top it off, you’ll strut your stuff and proudly display your

new, unique designs in a fashion show for friends and family! All designs are yours to keep at the end of class!

It’s Fashionable! Design it! Create it! Keep it!

Instructor: to be provided by Hobby Quest. Hobby Quest offers educational, hands-on programming in the areas of

Aviation, Magic, and Fashion Design. Our focus is to help children discover new interests through fun and exciting

enrichment classes, where they can explore their own creativity and hidden talents, and ultimately build “Skills for a

Lifetime.” We have been offering enrichment programming since 2002 and are currently working in over 300 local

schools and camps and instructing over 4000 students per year. We pride ourselves in offering one-of-a-kind quality

classes that provide educational experiences while having a great deal of fun!

REAL COOKING New Class! Grades: All Day: Tuesday Time: 3:15-4:15 4 weeks Cost: $95

Let’s have fun with food and make some really great recipes that turn into art we can eat! We’ll create a yummy meal

together and have a party every week, including a savory recipe, drink, and dessert. Don’t miss a chance to cook up some

fun food art and build your own recipe book while learning some things about how food gets from the farm to our plates!

Instructor: to be provided by Artsy Smartsy, a Creative Learning Experience that offers artful adventures for kids of all

ages. We believe that everybody is creative and our classes and workshops are geared toward kids’ natural curiosity and

eagerness to learn new things through creative self-expression. We make it our mission on a daily basis to provide an

outlet that supports and stimulates a kid’s creativity while teaching them how art has been used since the dawn of time to

tell the story of humanity and our experience of the world around us. We believe there’s an artist in everybody...and we

aim to bring that artist to life!

SLIME, SLIME, SLIME, SLIME AND MORE SLIME! New Class! Grades: All Day: Tuesday Time: 3:15-4:15 4 weeks Cost: $95

We know that RAS kids can't get enough of SLIME! In this class, we will make all kinds of slime as well as stress toys

filled with slime. Come join us for this awesome and fun class!

Instructor: Rhonda Charisse Reeves has a strong passion in the world of natural medicine and the science of nature and

how it works. She earned her Bachelor at Fairleigh Dickinson University and her Masters in Biochemistry and

Microbiology from Montclair State University. Rhonda worked in the corporate realm for several years in food and drug

research. She worked with the World Health Organization to research using plant materials to arrest several cancers

cells and the aids virus. She also develops skin care products that are biologically friendly. Rhonda was a science

educator in the Newark school system and worked for the Newark Museum as a science educator and tour guide in the

areas of science. She has a science publication in trace elements and its effects on the viability using plant cells. She also

published an article on the nature of water and continues researching the effects of the living on water. Rhonda was a

coordinator for Glen Ridge Aftercare and created the Science activities. She is currently working on science enrichment

programs for children.

WEDNESDAY CLASSES

ACTION SCRATCH- CODING THROUGH JAVA FOR KIDS Grades: All Day: Wednesday Time: 3:15-4:15 4 weeks Cost: $160

Scratch uses a graphic programming language developed at MIT. This class creates a beginner foundation in

programming which can be used in other advanced programming languages. In Action Scratch, young students will

learn fundamental programming concepts by creating different games for Scratch to play. Kids will program Scratch to

play basketball, dodge arrows, and even make Scratch clones! No previous programming skills are required, but

students should be comfortable using a computer and managing files.

Instructor: To be provided by CodeAdvantage. CodeAdvantage offers project-based coding and robotics enrichment

classes to engage, inspire, and motivate children to learn, have fun, and gain critical technology skills for the 21st

century.

AIRPLANE EXPLORATIONS

Grades: All Day: Wednesday Time: 3:15-4:15 4 weeks Cost: $85

Would you love to build your very own model airplane, and then actually fly it? The science of flying is made simple and

enjoyable when you take this class and become a Hobby Quest Airplane Specialist. In this STEM program, you will build

and actually fly our all-new, high-soaring models. How far will yours go? How high will it climb? Why does it fly?

Spring is the perfect time for even more flying fun and you’ll learn a great deal too! Attention: Airplane Specialists- your

new flight plan is confirmed!

CONTINUING ROCK GUITAR LESSONS Grades: All Day: Wednesday Time: 3:15-4:00 4 weeks Cost: $90

Come build on the skills you learned in Intro to Rock Guitar. Students will continue to improve their knowledge of

reading chord diagrams, guitar tablature, and rhythmic patterns. They will also be exposed to more Rock guitar techniques

and ensemble playing. Students are strongly encouraged to bring their favorite music to class. Students must bring their

own guitar to class as well as a music notation book, pencil, and guitar picks.

Instructor: Yves Obadia, a versatile and talented musician, is a Glen Ridge resident. Mr. Obadia, a graduate of the

Berklee College of Music, is a free-lance guitarist/composer/arranger who teaches privately in the NYC area.

CONTINUING UKULELE Grades: All Day: Wednesday Time: 4:00-4:45 4 weeks Cost: $90

Come build on the skills you learned in Beginner Ukulele. This class will further develop your child’s playing in a fun

and relaxed atmosphere. Students will continue to learn how to read chord diagrams and basic rhythms. Students will

rhythmically strum chords and play new melodies in the context of modern pop songs.

The teacher will provide all written material. A thin 3 ring binder is recommended to keep it organized.

Join in the fun as we explore many different ways to create with clay. Throughout history pottery has been the container

of choice for storing, serving, and preserving foods, liquids, and other goods in the home and hearth. It has also been the

medium of choice for making jewelry and other decorative items that enhance our lives and build self-esteem. We’ll use

air dry clay to sculpt and mold, make crafted pieces with polymer clay, and have an awesome time with everyone’s

favorite - Model Magic!

HARRY POTTER – SCIENCE OF WIZARDRY SUPER SIZED! Grades: All Day: Wednesday Time: 3:15 – 4:45 4 weeks Cost: $90

Don't forget your wands & safety goggles as we bring Hogwarts to life. Explore chemistry & brew

polyjuice potions, grow flesh eating plants in herbology, practice physics with spells that levitate &

glow. Live magical creatures & hands-on experiments are part of this class that will turn muggles into

witches and end with a feast featuring chocolate frogs, every flavor beans, and all of your favorite

wizard treats.

Instructor: Wanda Rodriguez includes program development for Liberty Science Center, Carnegie Science Center, New

York Hall of Science, American Museum of Natural History and Montclair State University’s Gifted & Talented program

among her career highlights. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Brooklyn College with an advanced degree in

elementary education and has been involved in science education for over 20 years.

RUFFLE SCARF AND CONVERSATION with Mrs. Ippolito Grades: All Day: Wednesday Time: 3:30-4:30 4 weeks Cost: $85

What better way to unwind after a full day at school? Time to converse as we create ruffle scarves using our fingers

and/or crochet hooks. The conversations are therapeutic and a new skill is learned! Please join this fun group!

Instructor: Eileen Ippolito is a 4th grade teacher at RAS who has been teaching knitting in the Discovery Series program

for over 4 years.

TGA PREMIER JUNIOR GOLF Grades: All Day: Wednesday Time: 3:15-4:15 4 weeks Cost: $95

TGA makes it convenient and fun for your child to learn and play golf right on their school campus! Our curriculums

were specially designed by industry-leading golf professionals and education specialists to ensure that the lesson plans are

age-appropriate as well as easy to understand and retain. Students will experience a mix of golf instruction, rules and

etiquette lessons, educational components, character development lessons, and physical activity as they advance through

the five-level program.

Instructor: To be provided by TGA. TGA’s screened and certified instructors have a passion for working with children

and are trained to help your student athlete develop a strong foundation of skills and knowledge as well as a passion for

the sport.

THURSDAY CLASSES

BATTLE OF THE WEEK Grades: All Day: Thursday Time: 3:15-4:15 4 weeks Cost: $75

Each class we will be a different themed battle such as cupcake battle, homemade dough battle, food science battle, board

game battles, and more. Then, under the careful supervision and enthusiasm of the CHEF IT UP 2 GO team, we will

break the kids into different teams and explain the rules for that battle. To add to the suspense we keep the ingredients a

secret until they are ready to battle it out! They will have a certain time frame to brainstorm & complete their battle with

their teammates to prepare their creations- it will be blast! We might take away a much needed utensil or add extra

ingredients… you never know what could happen with a CHEF IT UP 2 GO Battle!

Instructor: to be provided by CHEF IT UP 2 GO. CHEF IT UP & CHEF IT UP 2 GO have been entertaining both kids

and adults for the past 15 years bringing totally nut free cooking and no-bake fun to either our party place or to the

schools! Kids of all ages learn basic cooking skills, techniques, terms, and a variety of other skills through our guidance

with the preparation and assembly of fun food and drinks!! We offer hands-on programs that promote and enhance fine

motor skills while providing a great outlet for those who love to cook!

ENJOY POTTERY EVERYWHERE Grades: All Day: Thursday Time: 3:15-4:15 4 weeks Cost: $70

This class is designed for aspiring artists of all levels who share an interest in learning to work with clay. Artists will use

different types of clay and explore various techniques such as pinch pot, coil pot, slab building, and more to develop

creative pieces. This is an imaginative, hands on class that allows students of all ages to enjoy pottery everywhere.

Instructor: Kanae Yunome, a long time ceramic artist and Montclair resident, founded Potterywise in 2012 with the

simple intent of allowing people to “Enjoy Pottery Everywhere.” Kanae was born and raised in Sendai, Japan. She has

studied in Japan and at Parsons School of Design in NYC. She has been actively creating works of art using ceramics

for over 20 years.

GLASS MENAGERIE New Class! Grades: All Day: Thursday Time: 3:15-4:15 4 weeks Cost: $95

The use of glass as a medium for art has ancient roots and the process of creating glass artwork is much the same today as

it was thousands of years ago. We’ll use different types of glass to craft usable projects and jewelry adornments while we

study the history and process of this wonderful art experience. Create stained glass with glazing stains, turn plain glass

objects into beautiful etched and painted works of art, and produce a lovely fused glass piece, which will be kiln fired

offsite at our studio.

Do you love Magic? Have you ever wanted to learn how it’s done? This is your big chance! This spring, don’t miss our

All New Amazing Magicians Club. Learn how magicians perform jaw-dropping tricks and keep their audiences guessing!

Thrill them even more, when you learn street magic tricks that will baffle everyone. Learn important performance and

story-telling skills, and then, share your new skills with friends and family, in a real magic show at your school!

Keep all your tricks for even more fun at home! It’s Magical! Learn it! Perform it! Keep it!

MAKER ART Grades: All Day: Thursday Time: 3:30-4:30 4 weeks Cost: $90

In this exciting class, held in the Maker Space room, students will create many DIY projects including jewelry, use a

cutting printer called the cricut to design and create their own vinyl logo, create robots using the Lego Wedo 2.0,

discover the Makerspace challenge cards, Keva Blocks, as well as build and explore the many crafty materials in the

makerspace including fabric, painting, and much more!

Instructor: Jennifer Wujciak is a 3rd Grade Art Teacher at RAS. She is originally from West Caldwell but reside in Cedar

Grove. She has worked in Glen Ridge for over 10 years. She is also an Artist outside of school with a small business doing

portraits, paintings, murals, and Cricut Crafts.

ROCKIN ROBOTICS New Class! Grades: All Day: Thursday Time: 3:15-4:15 4 weeks Cost: $135 Explore the basic and complex technology used to design and build robots. Discover how machines and robots work and

how they make our lives easier. Learn about simple machines, gear structure, battery wiring, motor principles, and

electronic circuits. Experiment with different forms of locomotion – including wheels, legs, and “tracks.” Build your very

own robot and other projects!
