The design has a symmetric nature associated with it because of which as a whole it looks balanced. There is clear separation of the public and private areas on both the oors. On the lower level the public areas including the studio and the dining area are to the right while the bed-rooms are to the left. Similarly on the rst oor the private areas including the rooms and the study are on the back side while the open terraces for public gathering are in the front. With this idea of zoning the privacy of the family remains intact throughout.

The elevations clearly show the use of cascad-ing in the form in order to t with the contours on the site. The drawings show the dierent types and sizes of openings to ecently cut the strong sun and keep the interiors cool and comfortable. There are double-heighted areas to show a sense of grandeur.

Jaali walls and skylights are used to provide adequate amount of sunlight. The balcony that is seen in the front facade is also shaded by the open terrace above it. Therefore, it can be seen that there is a lot of play with light and shadow.

2. LIBRARY AND AUDITORIUM DESIGNSite location- Ansal University, Gurgaon,New DelhiBuilt area= 1000 sq meters

The library with the auditorium below it sits on the ground of Ansal University. The library was primarily designed for the students of Sushant School of Art and Architecture while the auditorium could be used by the entire university as well as people from outside. This particular site was chosen because it is centrally located and can be accessed from all the sides without a problem.

Site section

It can be seen in the site plan that the location of the library is such that it can be accessed easily by all the blocks. With greenery all around it provides a healthy and comfortable environment for a library. It is the most densely populated area as it is right in front of the cafeteria. Hence, it is the ideal location.

The auditorium with a clear height of 4m starts on the ground level and goes 1.9m underground and 2.1m overground. It can be accessed via the stairs or a ramp for the handicaps. The library is above the auditorium and starts at 2.1m overground with a clear height of 6m as it has a mezzanine floor as well.

The auditorium is in levels in order to provide the audience with an uninterrupted view of the stage. It is easily accessible for the handicaps and has an emergency fire exit as well.

All the floors follow a sense of symmetry making the design balanced and uniform. The lower level of the library has an informal arrangement where people can sit in groups and interact while, the mezzanine floor of the library has a more formal setting. There is space for individual study as well as two lecture halls which are used occasionally by the university students.

All the elevations are quite simple and plain yet they respond very well to all the existing building. The entire struc-ture- library and auditorium fits perfectly on the site without overpow-ering the existing elements. The elevations also show a high degree of symmetry as seen in the plans.

The openings of the house on all four sides with skylights and punctured walls are sufficient to provide enough natural light to create a suitable envi-ronment for the library.

3. CONTEMPORARY ART CENTRESite location- Hampi, KarnatakaThe contemporary art centre sits beautifully on the riverside contours between the boul-ders which are right in front of the famous Virupaksha Temple in Karnataka. The form and the concept of the building are such that the entire structure fits in perfectly without overpowering the grandeur and ethnicity of the temple.Soutn Indian temples are quite famous for their symmetry, ornamentation, grandeur, columns, gopurams as well as shikharas. These elements have been incorporated in the designing of the contemporary art centre to a great extent.

First floor plan

The plan is completely symmetric about a central axis which cuts through the Virupaksha temple if extended. The building starts at 5m above ground level and is accessed directly by a bridge which stops right at the entrance of the centre. The entire centre is divided into two halves. The first half has all the restricted areas that contain the galleries while the secon half has the unrestricted areas such as the restaurants, office and lecture hall. The restricted entry can be used only by getting a ticket. But there is only one exit.

The contemporary art centre has a long facade with very huge columns to mark the entrance as well as to give the feeling of grandeur as felt in the South Indian temples. The building has two floors on both the sides with the upper floors being cantilevered. The designing has been done in a way to provide maximum view of the contours, boulders, river as well as the Virupaksha temple from all the sides and all the levels of the buildings. The material that is used on the facade is zinc along with glass panels.
