I would like to thank the speakers from the Long Ride who made us realise it is easier to talk to our doctors and have a blood test to check for prostate cancer than leaving it too late and have no options left. Yes, I had the blood test and all is well. So get to the doctor because we want to see you all on many rides to come. Tracey and I have been out attending some rides which has been great fun meeting new people and catching up with other members. The HOT! Weather is here and we must remember to keep hydrated when riding in these extreme conditions. Make sure you make regular stops and carry water to drink – dehydration can lead to disorientation while riding. While we are talking about rides – I want to thank Peter Arday for his hard work as the Ride Co-ordinator and for all the ride leaders who volunteer their time and experience for our benefit. All the members who attend our rides should show the respect that these people deserve. We have a ride formula that has worked for many years – listen to the ride briefings, ride safely within your means and be supportive of the group. If we all take a turn to mark corners the ride flows like a well- oiled machine and everyone enjoys themselves and we return home safe and well. Last Thursday might Tracey and I met some fellow travellers from the Mt Lindesay branch in Queensland. We welcomed Rod, Tracie, Ken and Gris to Canberra with a meal at the Ainslie Football Club. They are on a three week trip taking in the sights of coastal NSW, Victoria and the Great Ocean Road before travelling home through Cowra, Dubbo and into Queensland. They were the first to buy our anniversary patches and the evening represented all that is good about being a member of the Ulysses Club. The 30 th Anniversary BBQ will be held at Telopea Park on Saturday 13th February. I’ve been contacted by a number of our early members who will be attending so don’t forget to RSVP. Just remember it’s a free BBQ – just bring alcoholic drinks. We will have 30th Anniversary patches for sale - the committee and helpers will be on BBQ duty - we look forward to meeting you all on the day. Register for Launceston – it’s not too late! - the 2016 Launceston AGM will be held on 29 th February – 6 th March and is fast approaching so don’t forget to register. This annual event is always a blast where you can meet Ulyssians from all over the country. If you can spare some time the Launceston AGM Event Committee would appreciate volunteers to assist in the day to day running of the AGM. It only has to be a couple of hours for many hands to make light work and assist our fellow Ulyssians. You can volunteer on the Launceston 2016 AGM website. We are all looking forward to experience Tasmania and its roads but make sure your means of transport are in good order to make the journey. Tasmanian roads are abrasive so get your tyres checked. One of the best things about the AGM is travelling in groups enjoying the journey together. I look forward to seeing everyone at the Deakin Football Club at Deakin on Tuesday 19th January for our monthly Social Meeting starting at 7.30pm. Come early - we will be there from 6.00pm to enjoy a meal or a drink in a great atmosphere before the meeting. Keep safe until we meet. Mick PO Box 387 Curtin ACT 2605

RIDER DEVELOPMENT 8

Here’s to a SMIDSY free 2106

Happy New Year everyone for 2016. I hope it is a safe and enjoyable riding year.I haven't ridden anywhere too significant this year, but since at time of writing I am only 10 days in I trust I will beforgiven.

I did manage to get a nice bit of country riding in right at the end of 2015 on my obligatory Christmas visit to myparents. A nice cross border run of just under 400ks each way through some really lovely east coast forestedroads.

It’s supposed to take about 4 and a half hours, but I usually schedule an extra half hour for a quick break for aburger and coffee at the General Store at Cabbage Tree Creek to set me up for a well fed fatigue free run to Bega.

The ride wasn't without a few less pleasant surprises though. I had three SMIDSY attempts on the way up, and asuper good one a few days later on the way back home after Boxing Day. There were two flatbed utes inBairnsdale with drivers who looked like farmers in their senior years. There was plenty of room to avoid them andas they didn't slow down for their left turns they had been signalling intent pretty clearly.

The 4x4 in Pambula didn't give any such warning as he launched from his rear to the kerb angle park. I havepretty low expectations of these guys so no surprises there - although he seemed to think I'd used a Tardis fromthe look he gave me. I'd been there all along if he had taken a look.

The 4x4 just out of Eden on my homeward leg was the best effort. I'd seen them coming up the side road and hadbacked off and covered my brakes. Sure enough they didn't stop until they were deep into my lane. I wavedpolitely as I passed. It was an inexcusable piece of poor driving, nearly failing to give way under conditions ofgood visibility and on a good surface.

As far as coastal traffic conditions go on this stretch of coast the silly season had barely begun. Overall trafficnumbers were still low and road conditions were great for visibility. This was just people driving poorly, selffocused or distracted and they were barely looking out for themselves let alone me.

This is a basic assumption of our roadcraft; realising that we must ride for others as well as ourselves.

It’s a good thing to remember at all times, but even more so as many of us prepare for the annual pilgrimage tothe 2016 AGM. It's a great ride down to the ferry no matter which way you go and even better riding on theisland. Please do plan your trip so that the pace is relaxed and schedule a few stops. You'll be better equipped tofight fatigue and better prepared for any surprises your fellow road users might bring.

Do remember that Tassie is a bit distracting with scenery as well, not to mention an ability to present severalseasons of weather in the one day. The roads are often narrow and while the locals are pretty used to touriststhey might not be prepared for the numbers of touring riders an AGM can bring.

It would be great to hear the tall tales and true from our fellow riders all returning safe and sound - a littleforethought, preparation and realistic expectations will help make this so. (and yes I understand that whathappens at the AGM stays at the AGM)

Safe RidingGary Mac

CLUB RIDE TO BODALLA DAIRY SHED 20TH DEC 2015.

Garry Mccurley & Natalie Tebay Honda VFR1200 Peter Arday Honda ST1300Robert Mcneilly Honda VFR800 Chris Matthews Kawasaki ZX10RChris Dietzel Kawasaki GTR1400 David Formica Kawasaki ZX14RMike Kelly BMW R1200RT Michael & Tracey Winters Triumph 1200

The day started off very warm and got hotter as the day went on. It was about 32 degrees during the ride briefingat the Watson Caltex servo, 39 degrees while going down part of the Clyde and reached 44 degrees for a whiledown the coast.

The original plan for the day was to ride to Braidwood for morning tea, down the Clyde, regroup opposite theSteam Packet at Nelligen, fuel at Moruya,  regroup outside Bodalla, lunch at Diary Shed, (rather than like previousyears ride to Cooma), this year ride to Potato Point, followed by a ride to Nerrigundah, fuel at Batemans Bay, upthe Clyde back to Braidwood for afternoon tea, good byes and home.

We made it to Braidwood incident free and after a bit of confusion about where to go for morning tea, ie. DOJOor the Albion we headed up at the Albion for a pleasant morning tea.

Even though the temperature was hot, the ride down the Clyde was enjoyable and as planned we regrouped atNelligen, then incident free onto Moruya for fuel.

While riding to Moruya a goanna wandered across the highway in front of us. Blowing my bike horn to hurry it updid not help.  Then just before Moruya there where 2 huge bulls trying to escape the heat under the shade of atree.

After refuelling at Moruya we continued on to Bodalla for anice lunch.

The girls at the Dairy Shed were marvellous and gave usfantastic service. We arrived a bit early and under difficultcircumstances due to our early arrival the girls still providedexcellent, very customer-focused service.

Plans then changed as some decided to head straight homewhile others decided to go to Narooma to see some seals onthe sea break wall, that Chris Dietzel told us about.

Chris very kindly lead us to Narooma and through the town to theplace where the seals where reported to be.

While we did not find any seals the ride was really worth while forthe scenery alone, including 2 sting rays swimming in the beautifulclear blue water.

After we finished a bit of a tour of Narooma, Chris led us back toBatemans Bay for fuel before our run up the Clyde.

Before arriving in Batemans Bay the air temperature hit 44degrees. The air was too hot to ride with your helmet visor up. If

you lifted your visor you very quickly put it back down due to the radiant heat streaming onto your face.

We made it to Batemans Bay incident free for fuel, a cold drink and an ice cream. While at the servo due to theextreme hot air temperature Chris shows us a novel way to keep your head cool in a bike helmet - place yourhelmet under a tap and wet the inside lining. Nat then showed us another way to keep cool while riding - soak abandana in water and tie it around your neck.

After we fuelled the bikes and some heat proofed themselves we headed up the Clyde. Chris lead us for apretty standard enjoyable ride up the Clyde until about the 2nd last tight corner.

We found a VW Transport van towing a diesel Peugeot stranded half way around the corner with trafficstreaming past.

Chris very thoughtfully stopped to see if the driver needed help.

Chris soon worked out the van driver was rather inexperienced and needed help. Chris very professionally tookcontrol of the situation and between us all we directed traffic past the van until a solution could be found to getthe VW van on its way.

Another guy then pulled up on the opposite side of the road also in Peugeot. Apparently he owned the dieselPug on the trailer.  The reason it was on the trailer was someone put petrol in his diesel Pug☺

The Pug owner was very grateful that a group of "bikies" pulled up to help. He commented "it looks like allbikies aren't the same".

Then a half empty flat bed semi came around the corner. The semi driver stopped and offered to tow the vanup the Clyde. He  reversed back to the VW van connected the semi to the VW and without hesitation the semipulled the van, and car trailer containing the broken down Pug up the Clyde.

We then got back on our bikes and rode off to Braidwood for a cool drink and more ice cream. After relaxingover good conversation we said our goodbyes and headed home.

Although the day didn't quite go to plan and was a bit warm, the day was a success in that it was a real test ofwomen, men, motor bikes and semi trailers ☺ - all past with flying colours - it was a good day.

Garry.

Leading a ride on the last day of the Christmas / New Year’s holiday period posed an interesting challenge interms of significant traffic later in the day. After about an hour of looking at options on the Saturday I decidedon a route that was to combine the Boorowa – Crookwell loop with the Range Road and into Goulburn for lunchat the Green Grocer.

Chris had kindly volunteered to be tail end Charlie in the Subaru although his high viz vest was not easily seenthrough the windscreen, and in fact during the course of the day some detractors said that he may not even bewearing it.

As it turned out we were extremely fortunate in terms ofthere being almost zero traffic on the Barton Highwayand Lachlan Valley Way, with the ability to maintain thelegal speed limit all the way to Boorowa. To say theBoorowa café struggled to deal with 20+ motorcyclists inaddition to other holiday traffic would be anunderstatement, but eventually everyone received theirfix and nibbles and a chance for some catching up andconversations. While it was a prolonged stop it did notimpact the balance of the day.

My thanks to the couple in Boorowa (forgive my memory) who suggestedringing the Greengrocer café to make a booking given our numbers, and yesthey even had the phone number in their mobile.

Given the diverse experience of riders and knowledge of the road to Crookwellwe had a consolidation point in Crookwell to ensure we had everyone beforeheading off on the last leg. Again no traffic and with the exception of somestrong wind gusts it was a very fluent ride all the way to Crookwell with thetemperature in the low twenties.

With all riders at the consolidation point including the Subaru (but what no Hiviz!) we set off down the Kialla Road where the quantity of new housingdevelopment came as a surprise. As we approached the Range Road wind farmswere numerous.

The run into Goulburn was again without traffic and allowed us as a group toarrive in Goulburn together. The above-mentioned phone call in Boorowacertainly paid dividends as the cafe had set up and reserved six tables for usprior to our arrival.

Homeward bound….

With the Sutton road near Gunning a mess with an overzealous approach to dumping gigalitres of water, thisalternate route home was not a goer. This left us with the choice of returning via the Federal Highway or goingthrough Bungendore and dealing with the returning coast traffic.

In the end there was an even spilt with those choosing one of the above two routes home. I came back downthe Federal which proved painless and quick, although there were quite a few NSW Highway Patrol cars in waitfor overzealous motorists.

Pete, Chas and I then turned off at Sutton then into Gungahlin to return to our local coffee shop in Spence.

My thanks to those on the ride that made for such an enjoyable day. This is my first time leading a ride in morethan a year and I must admit that I thoroughly enjoyed it, with every person on the ride acting responsibly andallowing the ride to be hassle free.

PS.. I must admit this loop with a run back from Goulburn to Bungendore via Currawang Road will be added tomy list of favourite rides. Hopefully I will be able to twist Andrew’s arm to come along next time be it on hisYamaha or Kwaka.

Cheers

Trevor

Ride report Sunday 10th January 2016We’re all going to Crookwell Bowral from Watson Nicholls

spot tracking data : https://spotwalla.com/tripViewer.php?id=f9b2569206a3f3c95

Gorgeous hot riding weather for this somewhat confusing (to some) ride. As we went to Goulburn last weekendvia Crookwell, the ride leader changed the ride to Bowral - which as everyone knows is an equally beaut ride. 24riders rolled up to Nicholls on the day - which proves that “Ian in Charge” is a total drawcard (author’snote.…only a few were women)

We left on time from Nicholls, and Trevor led the first part of the ride - myfavourite back way through Mabo Bvd and East Tallangandra Lane to Sutton.

We took Macs Reef Road out to Bungendore, where we picked up 5 more. Werode out to Tarago, where we lost one who headed back to Canberra to dosome ‘work’. On arrival at Marulan for our scheduled coffee stop, we then lost 4- and one other disappeared to give Macquarie Pass a go. Seems “Ian in Charge”is not such a drawcard after all.

There were a number of notable incidents on the day - Genelle’s altercationwith the gravel in a 35km/h corner on her brand spanking new tyres - ready, steady, wiggle !!!

Peter Arday had an altercation with the samecorner where the gravel tried to spit him outthe other side so he drove over the top ofthe roadside marker pole to avoid injury toman or bike. Awesome job Pete - that’sexactly why those poles are made like kidsbouncy clowns (kind of) !

Andrew Campbell’s top box decided to partcompany with the back of his bike at speedand at head height for the rider behind -Trevor is such a slacker - he didn’t even try tocatch it from what I heard.

“Ian in Charge” told us a great true story atlunch about his unruly man bits being held

together by a playboy G string on a trip with Suzanne and Peter ….. that one should probably go into the archivesnever to be told again.

A great ride, great food, great conversation and an equally great way to spend a Sunday.

PS: on a slightly unofficial note, Jenny joined the ride from Nichollsto Tarago and then left the 2-wheeler low-fly/riding mob and tooka solo ride (at a pace more befitting a wannabe disgraceful ladyscooter-person and with many thanks from Tail End Charlie whocelebrated that he would now be able to get out of 2nd gear andfind the rest of the ride) and headed off to Goulburn, then via

Gunning, Gundaroo and Sutton to home. We hear that she stopped at Goulburndefinitely for coffee and maybe prayers (see pic) before heading home.  From allreports she had a most enjoyable solo part of the ride and the 37 degrees on the finalleg did not faze her or Betty (her metal steed) and actually spurred her on to increasethe cooling effect of the wind by simply going faster. She also tried the ‘wet helmet andbottle of water down the jacket hints’ mentioned in a previous ride report and foundthem to work a treat. ☺

I just read an article on the dangers ofdrinking....

Scared the living daylights out of me.

So that's it!

After today, no more reading.
