HOLIDAY GREETINGS

As our decennial year draws to a close, we of the Aerospace Genter canIook with pride upon our accomplishments. As a team, we have continuallyresponded to the requirements of the military services and the federalagencies we support. They in turn have been able to sarry out the vitalaerospace missions of earth and space.

In the satisfaction we draw from a iob well-done comes the responsibilityto examine both the team effort and our own individual effort to assurethat our future accomplishments will be even better; that we keep currentwith technological developments; that we produce the best producte; andthat we provide the best services to meet our usersr needs.

As you gather with family and friends for the holidays, take with you mysincere appreciation for all your positive efforts in 1982 and my best wistresfor the new year.

Director haises Contractorb tupportRomeo Caroletti of OMI Corporation of America, Alexandria, Va.,

was presented a certificate of achievement by Aerospace Center DirectorCol. J. W. Small for outstanding contractor support from 1958-1981.

Caroletti was cited for his work in redesigning a stereocomparator tomeet DMA's stringent requirements. He is the chief engineer responsiblefor assembly of the viewer in America.

"Mr. Caroletti worked long hours with DMA and OMI technicians tosolve design problems which caused the original TA3/P11 (stereocom-parator) to fail acceptance tests," Colonel Small said in a letter to thepresident of OMI. "He made suggestions, redesigned components, and inmany cases, manufactured parts to test his solutions. Without thisdedication to craftsmanship and knowledge of optical/mechanicalsystems, none of the TA3/P11s would have met the technicalspecifications. "

Meyer of the Satellite GeodesyBranch points out.

Observers have reason to behopeful this time. "On cool winternights, you sometimes get somereal good seeing," Meyer com-mented. Atmospheric conditionsand city lights also should be lessdistracting, as the moon's arc doesnot appear so close to the horizonat this time of year.

A total eclipse of the moon oc-

the moon until totality is reached.Totality will last from 4:58 until5:59. Then the second umbralphase will occur, from 5 :59 to 7:07,as the dhadow of the earth on themoon gradually recedes. The moonwill be setting at 7:16 and the sunrising at 7:20, so the latter umbrawill not be as spectacular.

Incidentally, the penumbralphase, when the moon darkens asthe earth's shadow ap-

hol (which is a factor inhalf of all traffic deaths)and tranquilizers. A recentBritish medical study re-vealed that drivers onvalium or any other mildtranquilizer are five timesmore likely to become in-volved in car crashes thanpeople not taking thesedrugs.

ODS Assumes FtlP Foreign Military Sales

Valera Schoen of the Graphic Arts Departmentrecently spent a week in Washington assisting in thetransfer of management responsibility for foreignmilitary sales of Flight Information Publications tothe DMA Office of Distribution Services.

The Aerospace Center's Flight InformationBranch in GA's Finishing and Distribution Divisionpreviously handled foreign military sales of FLIPsand will continue to provide automatic distribution toall users.

ODS already handled foreign military sales ofmost charts, so it was decided that all foreignmilitary sales should be handled in one place, Schoenexplained.

Schoen had handled the sales for the AerospaceCenter, which involved some 35 different govern-ments and required frequent contact with embassiesinWashington. "Itwas interesting work," she said.

Among the earliest products produced at theAerospace Center, FLIPs are a series of publicationsthat provide military and civilian users with accurateinformation for flight planning, enroute travel andflight termination proceedings. The regularly updated series covers all parts of the world.

While FLIPs will continue to be produced at theAerospace Center, publication of the monthlyAeronautical Bulletin and semiannual AeronauticalBulletin Digest has been assumed by ODS. Thetrarsfer in function is part of the ongoing program tostandardize the DMA Catalog.Page 4 ORIENTOR December 17,1982
