You Can’t Find This on Your DeviceBy Wayne Parmley

Wisconsin’s 3rd annual Youth Trout Fishing Camp was held in July on Pike Lake. We had our largest group of campers to date, 20 great boys and girls from around the state. They showed up excited and left with big smiles on their faces, not to mention an armload of prizes. CWTU sponsored 2 students this year, Silas Schmudlach and Grant Ries. I overheard Grant on the last day say something to the effect of, “This was great!”

Big thank you goes out to Bob Haase and Linn Beck for having the vision over three years ago and doing all the planning for this camp to keep the momentum strong. Also want to thank all the great

volunteers and presenters, both local and from all corners of the state. Without all these wonderful people giving up one to four days of their summer, it would have not has been as successful as it has been last three years. Almost half of the volunteers this year were new to helping with this camp and it was awesome to have so many new faces.

Once again the camp covered the whole spectrum of trout fishing including the requirements of the environment trout live in. Most of topics we discussed were aquatic life, stream habitat, spin fishing, live bait, fly fishing, casting, fly tying, spinner making, gear, safety, and stream

improvement. Hand’s on experience is the best teacher, so we fished for panfish and bass on the lake and also spent an evening on a local trout streams.

We are already looking ahead to next years’ summer camp by building on what we have in place and adding a range of improvements based on all the great feedback we received. For more information to get involved, please contact Linn Beck or myself. If you know of a boy or girl interested in fishing and attending the camp next year, please let us know.

A haze of fog covers the land limiting my sight to 50 yards. I take a deep breath and I smell the rotting leaves of Fall. Water is rushing over a gravel bar and I am chilled

because the air is damp with the sun starting to rise. This is not fishing, but my cup overflows with excitement and joy. Yes most of the colors are gone from the maples and aspen that give us the vibrant reds, oranges and yellows. The maroon Oak savanna ridges and all the springs and feeder creeks expose themselves with dead foliage. Even better the tamaracks stick out like sore thumbs, the Browns are spawning and whitetails are chasing!

Aldo Leopold called the Tamarack smoky gold, which I use quite often. A beautiful yellow, which will soon disappear on a blustery late fall afternoon. It is a strange phenomenon to have an evergreen lose its leaves, rarely discussed, but I keep a mental note of where they are when I am driving through Waushara County or fishing so I can come see them at this very moment.

When I look at the water there I notice a very large trout in a creek I could jump over. Reproduction has driven the trout to exposure. This is rare instance you can actually see these large fish in our watersheds. I take a couple steps back and sit down hoping to see a dance with his mate but after 15 minutes I realize it is may have happened or is going to happen tomorrow?

When I leave the woods a doe runs past me. Maybe, I kicked her up… Seconds later I see a small buck just to the side of her trail she was running. It wasn’t me, which makes this my favorite time of the year. If you missed it, I will see you out there next year.
