North Central Baptist Hospital: Reaching New Heights in Women and Children ServicesIt’s hard not to notice the giant blue crane that frames the skyline over North Central Baptist Hospital. �roughout the past year, construction crews have been busy building a $60 million dollar, six- oor tower to accommodate the hospital’s newly expanded women and children services and oncology services.Beginning August 5, 2013, the hospital will open its new expansions in the areas of labor and delivery, including postpartum and neonatal intensive care services. Bill Waechter, president of North Central Baptist Hospital, said the population growth in the Stone Oak area over the past few years was a major factor for these expansions.“We were at a point where we were at capacity in many areas and needed to expand to be able to provide di�erent services and more of the services that we were providing prior. So we are expanding in the areas that make sense for this community,” stated Waechter.Stone Oak families can expect updated services for any life stage, injury or illness of their children. �ese updates will include expanded labor and delivery services, which support the average 300 deliveries each month, to a brand new neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for its tiniest patients. �ey o�er their children’s emergency center for unexpected injuries or illness, and they will soon unveil a new pediatric oor.New moms can expect a very high quality boutique style of service, which has evolved into a new program referred to as “Great Expectations”. It includes one-on-one nursing

consultations throughout pregnancy and during hospitalization, a “Stork Meal” after delivery for mom and signi�cant other, as well as a post-birth mommy massage among other bene�ts. �e hospital will also have an additional brand new nursery, new post-partum rooms and new labor and delivery operating rooms. According to NICU interim director, Stacey Shreckengost, RNC, “�e NICU expansion will consist of 60 new beds and includes an additional 12 bed step-down unit and 24 private rooms. Eight of these private rooms feature Jack and Jill bathrooms, so parents may stay in the NICU close to their baby. North Central Baptist Hospital is the only facility in San Antonio to o�er this type of amenity.”

“We want people to walk away from the hospital saying ‘We had a great experience here,’ no matter what circumstance it is.”A brand new facility alone doesn’t make a great hospital; it’s the sta� and their advanced educational opportunities that matter too. One new educational addition is the building of a state-of-the art NICU simulation lab to replicate emergency situations to ensure physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists and technicians are well prepared for any situation that could arise. Alejandro Gonzales, M.D., neonatologist at North Central Baptist Hospital, runs this NICU simulation program to prepare sta� for any type of NICU emergency.

Besides the additional space, updated technology and added capacity, the hospital will increase its specialized medical sta� as well. “Our hospital has an in-house neonatologist,” says Vernon �eis, M.D., who is an obstetrician and the chief of sta� at North Central Baptist Hospital. “�e neonatologist specializes in taking care of pre-mature babies and babies with birth defects.” Labor and delivery won’t be the only expanded department in this project, the hospital is also expanding its oncology unit on the 5th oor, focusing on adolescent to young adult care. “�e goal is to make people who don’t want to be in the hospital happy,” says �eis. “We want people to walk away from the hospital saying ‘We had a great experience here,’ no matter what circumstance it is.”Expansions will start to open in August and continue throughout December. �e hospital hopes to have all the construction crews out by the end of the year.
