    Ishallhavetoharkbackabit.Andtakingitforallinallandweighingthisagainstthat,Isupposetheaffairmaybesaidtohavehaditsinception,ifinceptionisthewordIwant,withthatvisitofminetoCannes.IfIhadn'tgonetoCannes,Ishouldn'thavemettheBassettorboughtthatwhitemessjacket,andAngelawouldn'thavemethershark,andAuntDahliawouldn'thaveplayedbaccarat.

    Itwasn'tasifheandIwereinanywaybosom.Wehadseenalotofeachotheratonetime,ofcourse,butinthelasttwoyearsIhadn'thadsomuchasapostcardfromhim.

    Youknowhowitiswithsomegirls.Theyseemtotakethestuffingrightoutofyou.Imeantosay,thereissomethingabouttheirpersonalitythatparalysesthevocalcordsandreducesthecontentsofthebraintocauliflower.ItwaslikethatwiththisBassettandme;somuchsothatIhaveknownoccasionswhenforminutesatastretchBertramWoostermighthavebeenobservedfumblingwiththetie,shufflingthefeet,andbehavinginallotherrespectsinherpresencelikethecompletedumbbrick.When,therefore,shetookherdeparturesometwoweeksbeforewedid,youmayreadilyimaginethat,inBertram'sopinion,itwasnotadaytoosoon.

    Asregardsthefusingofhersoulandmine,therefore,therewasnothingdoing.ButwithGussie,theposishwasentirelydifferent.Thethingthathadstymiedme—viz.thatthisgirlwasobviouslyallloadeddownwithidealsandsentimentandwhatnot—wasquiteinorderasfarashewasconcerned.

    Gussiehadalwaysbeenoneofthosedreamy,soulfulbirds—youcan'tshutyourselfupinthecountryandliveonlyfornewts,ifyou'renot—andIcouldseenoreasonwhy,ifhecouldsomehowbeinducedtogetthelow,burningwordsoffhischest,heandtheBassettshouldn'thititofflikehamandeggs.

    ThefirstintimationIhadthatthingswereabouttohotupwasapainedanddisapprovingcoughfromtheneighbourhoodofthecarpet.For,duringtheaboveexchanges,Ishouldexplain,whileI,havingdriedtheframe,hadbeendressinginaleisurelymanner,donninghereasock,thereashoe,andgraduallyclimbingintothevest,theshirt,thetie,andtheknee-length,Jeeveshadbeendownonthelowerlevel,unpackingmyeffects.

    Henowrose,holdingawhiteobject.Andatthesightofit,Irealizedthatanotherofourdomesticcriseshadarrived,anotherofthoseunfortunateclashesofwillbetweentwostrongmen,andthatBertram,unlessherememberedhisfightingancestorsandstoodupforhisrights,wasabouttobeputupon.

    Idon'tknowifyouwereatCannesthissummer.Ifyouwere,youwillrecallthatanybodywithanypretensionstobeingthelifeandsoulofthepartywasaccustomedtoattendbingesattheCasinointheordinaryevening-weartrouseringstoppedtothenorthbyawhitemess-jacketwithbrassbuttons.AndeversinceIhadsteppedaboardtheBlueTrainatCannesstation,IhadbeenwonderingonandoffhowminewouldgowithJeeves.

    Inthematterofeveningcostume,yousee,Jeevesishideboundandreactionary.Ihadhadtroublewithhimbeforeaboutsoft-bosomedshirts.Andwhilethesemess-jacketshad,asIsay,beenalltherage—toutcequ'ilyadechic—ontheCôted'Azur,Ihadneverconcealeditfrommyself,evenwhentreadingthemeasureatthePalmBeachCasinointheoneIhadhastenedtobuy,thattheremightbesomethingofanupheavalaboutitonmyreturn.
