Introduction-

The Reliance Group, founded by Dhirubhai H. Ambani (1932-2002), is India's largest private sector enterprise, with businesses in the energy and materials value chain. Group's annual revenues are in excess of US$ 44 billion. The flagship company, Reliance Industries Limited, is a Fortune Global 500 company and is the largest private sector company in India.

Backward vertical integration has been the cornerstone of the evolution and growth of Reliance. Starting with textiles in the late seventies, Reliance pursued a strategy of backward vertical integration - in polyester, fiber intermediates, plastics, petrochemicals, petroleum refining and oil and gas exploration and production - to be fully integrated along the materials and energy value chain.

The Group's activities span exploration and production of oil and gas, petroleum refining and marketing, petrochemicals (polyester, fiber intermediates, plastics and chemicals), textiles, retail and special economic zones.

Reliance enjoys global leadership in its businesses, being the largest polyester yarn and fiber producer in the world and among the top five to ten producers in the world in major petrochemical products.

Introduction –Reliance Industries limited (RIL)

Reliance Industries Limited is India's largest private sector conglomerate company by market value, with an annual turnover of US$ 44.6 billion and profit of US$ 3.6 billion for the fiscal year ending in March 2010 making it one of India's private sector companies, being ranked at 264th position in the Fortune Global 500 (2009) and at the 126th position in the Forbes Global 2000 list (2010).

According to the company website "1 out of every 4 investors in India is a Reliance shareholder.”. Reliance has more than 3 million shareholders, making it one of the world's most widely held stocks. Reliance Industries Ltd, subsequent to its split in January 2006 has continued to grow. Reliance companies have been among the best performing in the Indian stock market.

Subsidiaries and associates of RIL-

Reliance Petroleum Limited (RPL) was a subsidiary of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) and was created to exploit the emerging opportunities, creating value in the refining sector worldwide. Currently, RPL stands amalgamated with RIL.

Reliance Life Sciences is a research-driven, biotechnology-led, life sciences organization that participates in medical, plant and industrial biotechnology opportunities. Specifically, these relate to Biopharmaceuticals, Pharmaceuticals, Clinical Research Services, Regenerative Medicine, Molecular Medicine, Novel Therapeutics, Biofuels, Plant Biotechnology and Industrial Biotechnology.

Reliance Industrial Infrastructure Limited (RIIL) is engaged in the business of setting up / operating Industrial Infrastructure that also involves leasing and providing services connected with computer software and data processing.

Reliance Institute of Life Sciences (Rils), established by Dhirubhai Ambani Foundation, is an institution of higher education in various fields of life sciences and related technologies.

Reliance Logistics (P) Limited is a single window solutions provider for transportation, distribution, warehousing, logistics, and supply chain needs, supported by in house state of art telematics and telemetry solutions

Reliance Clinical Research Services (RCRS), a contract research organization (CRO) and wholly owned subsidiary of Reliance Life Sciences, has been set up to provide clinical research services to pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device companies.

Reliance Solar, The solar energy initiative of Reliance aims to bring solar energy systems and solutions primarily to remote and rural areas and bring about a transformation in the quality of life.

Relicord is the first and one of the most dependable stem-cell banking services of South East Asia offered by Mukesh Ambani controlled Reliance Industries.

Infotel Broadband is a broadband service provider, it is wholly owned by RIL for Rs 4,800 crore.

RIL emerged as the 'Best Managed Company' in India in a study by BusinessToday and A.T. Kearney in 2003. The company emerged 'India's biggest wealth creator' in the private sector over a 5-year period in a study byBusiness Today - Stern Stewart in 2004.

Although the outlets are subsidiaries of reliance retail they have been given a different identity by RIL, we can see that from their distinct logos-

Employee uniform at RIL-Reliance has a distinct uniform at its retail outlets; it is red colored T-shirt with the stores logo on it, with muddy yellow sleeve and collar, they have a red cap as well with the stores logo on it. The trousers are not same everywhere at some stores they are red and at some they are grey. But reliance digital has a different employee uniform which is a light blue colored shirt with logo on it and grey trousers.

Advertising –

RIL does not emphasize much on advertising as the organization is well known all over India as its role in Indian economy is very major.RIL still does a little promotion for its retail outlets which are mostly hard sell ads and informative in nature. Few of them are as follows-

RIL’s advertising is done through web too, where ads are placed on information based websites. And search engines are hired to show their ads when someone search for any product or service category which is manufactured or served by RIL.

Major events in RIL in last one year-1-Reliance Industries and IMG Worldwide forge alliance (IMG Reliance)March 14, 2010, Mumbai: Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) and IMG, the world’sleading sports marketing and management company, announced an equal joint ventureto develop, market and manage sports and entertainment in India. The venture,IMG Reliance Pvt. Ltd., will have parallel complementary strategies: to provide andoperate world class infrastructure and coaching facilities in the country to unlock India’ssporting potential and; to create and operate major sports and entertainment assets inthe country.

2-Mumbai, May 23, 2010: Reliance Industries Ltd. (RIL), led by Shri Mukesh D. Ambani, and Reliance ADA Group companies, Reliance Communications Ltd., Reliance Infrastructure Ltd., Reliance Natural Resources Ltd., and Reliance Capital Ltd., led by Shri Anil D. Ambani, have approved and signed an Agreement canceling all existing non-compete arrangements entered into between the two groups in January 2006 pursuant to the scheme of reorganization of the Reliance Group and entered into a new simpler, Non Compete Agreement with respect toonly Gas Based Power Generation. The above Agreements have been approved by the Board of Directors of RIL and the respective Reliance ADA Group companies.

4-july 22nd 2010-Reliance Industries’ (RIL’s) exclusive textile brand, Vimal, is intending to add atleast 38 new stores to its retail network this financial year.

Currently the firm has more than 380 stores across India, and they intend to increase the same by around 10 percent during FY-11. As of now, the investment needed for this expansion remains undisclosed.

RIL is planning for more stores in the future, thereby; provide support to their franchisees so as to boost their brand, Vimal.

5-Corporate Social Responsibility• Gold Medal from the Indian Red Cross Society in recognition of the ‘Protsaham Scheme’–for educational support to poor meritorious students in 2009.• Certificate of appreciation from the District Collector, East Godavari district in 2009 for CSR initiatives in this region.• The Hazira Manufacturing Division won the ‘Arch of Excellence for CSR Outrech Programmes’ at the AIAC Business Excellence Awards in 2009.

6- RIL joins the league of global deepwater oil and gas operators - RIL commenced production of hydrocarbons in its KGD6 block in the Krishna Godavari basin with the production of sweet crude of 420 API. The production of oil in KG-D6 was commissioned in just over two years of its discovery, making it the world’s fastest green-field deepwater oil development project.

7- With the commissioning of the new refinery in its Special Economic Zone (SEZ), Jamnagar has now become the petroleum hub of the world. With 1.24 Million Barrels Per Day (MBPD) of nominal crude processing capacity, it is the single largest refining complex in the world.

8- RPL merger with RIL: Value creation through scale and synergies - The merger of Reliance Petroleum Limited (RPL) with Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has enabled seamless integration of operational scale and financial synergies that existed between the two Companies. Assets and liabilities of RPL have been transferred to RIL with effect from 1st April 2008, as per the approval granted by the Hon. High Courts of Mumbai and Gujarat. Shareholders of RPL received 1 share of RIL in lieu of every 16 shares of RPL held by them, as per the scheme of merger. Accordingly, 6.92 crore new equity shares of RIL have been allotted to the shareholders of RPL.

1-IBN18 India's leading No 1 News Network in partnership with Reliance Industries Limited India's largest private sector enterprise honored 24 Real Heroes of India. Real Heroes is a movement to acknowledge the unsung champions of the common man who strove tirelessly to promote the welfare of others. These Real Heroes were shortlisted by the editorial team of CNN-IBN, and they were spread across six categories including, Women Welfare, Social Welfare, Health and Disability, Youth, Education and Children & Sports. The ceremony was attended by luminaries including CMD of Reliance Industries, Mr. Mukesh Ambani, his wife, Mrs. Nita Ambani, Sachin Tendulkar, Aamir Khan, Yash Chopra and other eminent personalities applauded the heroes who through their extraordinary work have made a difference. Each of the Real Heroes was presented a trophy along with a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh.

2-As part of the drive to promote tourism, the government of Puducherry has a come up with the decision to construct the 101 metres tall tower, worth Rs 25-crore replica at Giriyampetta in Yanam.The project is sponsored by the Reliance Industries Limited under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme.The construction is expected to complete by Oct 2010. The structure will be erected amidst a lush green park and attractive landscape to attract more tourist.

3-January 9 2010-Mukesh Ambani, chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL), will set up a new age world-class university in India.The university will be set up under Reliance Foundation, the new philanthropic initiative of the Reliance Group, and will be modelled on the lines of American universities. RIL will invest Rs 500 crore in the foundation with plans to scale up its contribution to Rs 1,000 crore.“The university will promote education and research in all disciplines of knowledge — from science and technology to liberal arts. It will also forge partnerships with reputed universities around the world and will be international in scale and in best practices,” Ambani said.

4-New Delhi, July 9, 2010: The Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI), the

recognized official body of professional golf in India has joined hands with IMGReliance to develop the burgeoning golfing talent in the country. As part of thisinitiative, PGTI is conducting trials for selection of young golfers who will qualify

for the IMG Reliance Scholarships for India programme. The IMG RelianceScholarships for India is a unique initiative to identify talented Indian athletes,who will be provided with full sporting and academic scholarships to train andcoach at the IMG Academies in Brandenton, Florida, United States of America.

5- New Delhi, July 12, 2010: The All India Tennis Association (AITA) andIMG Reliance have joined hands to develop the latent tennis potential in thecountry. As part of this initiative, Tennis Coaching legend Nick Bollettieri isvisiting India to identify the talent in the country. Under the aegis of AITA, trialswill be conducted under the watchful eyes of Bollettieri for selection of youngtennis players for the IMG Reliance Scholarships for India programme. Theprogramme is a unique initiative to identify talented Indian athletes, who will beprovided with full sporting and academic scholarships to train and coach at theIMG Academies in Brandenton, Florida, United States of America. Nick Bollettieriis accompanied by Miguel Rosa, a leading tennis coach from IMG Academies.

In 2009, Shri Mukesh D. Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director of RIL, was ranked the 5th best performing CEO in the world by the Harvard Business Review in its ranking of the top 50 global CEOs of all publicly traded companies that have made it into the Standard & Poor’s Global 1200 or BRIC 40 lists since 1997 and also companies from Brazil, Russia, India, and China.

Shri Mukesh D. Ambani was awarded the Dean’s Medal by University of Pennsylvania’s Eduardo Glandt, dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Science in 2010. The recognition was for his leadership in the application of engineering and technology.

Shri Mukesh D. Ambani was awarded the Indian Merchant’s Chamber (IMC) ‘Juran Quality Medal for 2009’, in 2010.

Shri Hardev Singh Kohli received the ‘Gem of India Award’ for his contributions to usher in excellence in the Indian industry at the All India Achievers’ Conference (AIAC) in 2009.

RIL continues to be featured, for the fifth consecutive year, in the Fortune Global 500 list of the “World’s Largest Corporations”; ranking for 2009 is as follows:

Ranked 264th in terms of sales Ranked 117th in terms of profits

RIL is ranked 75th in 2009, in the FT Global 500 (up from previous year’s 80th rank).

RIL has been ranked as the 5th sustainable value creator globally by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) in their report on the Top 25 sustainable value creators that have been most successful at attaining superior value creation over a longer period of time.

RIL, ranked at the 11th position, was the only Indian company in the 25 A T Kearney Global Champions for 2009.

RIL is ranked as 15th most innovative company in the world in 2009, climbing 4 positions from 2008, in a survey conducted by Business Week and the BCG. This survey of around 3,000 global CEOs is done to rate the world’s top 50 most innovative companies.

The Allahabad Manufacturing Division bagged the Golden Jubilee Award from the Eastern UP Chamber of Commerce and Industry for extraordinary accomplishments in 2009.

The Exploration and Production (E&P) division won the ‘Best Project of the Year 2009’ award for KG-D6 Block Deepwater (D1/D3) Gas Fields Development Project Kakinada, East coast of India from the Project Management Institute, India in 2009.

The Allahabad Manufacturing Division received the BSC-5 star certification for safety and occupational health from the British Safety Council in 2009.

The E&P division received the Oil Industry Safety Award from the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas for ‘Best Overall Safety Performance amongst Offshore Drilling Rigs’ (private and joint venture) in 2009.

The Dahej Manufacturing Division received the ‘10th Annual Greentech Environment Excellence Award 2009’ in the Petrochemicals sector from the Greentech Foundation in 2009.

The Dahej Manufacturing Division won the ‘Greentech Safety Award 2009–Gold’ in the Petrochemicals sector from the Greentech Foundation in 2009.

The Dahej Manufacturing Division received Runners up Award in the Gujarat State Safety Award – 2007 (Petroleum Gas Generation & Distribution, Petrochemicals) category. It was also selected for the lowest Disabling Injury Index (DII) in 2009.

The Hazira Manufacturing Division has won the ‘Golden Peacock Award for Occupational Health & Safety’ in 2009.

The Hazira Manufacturing Division won the annual FICCI Award in the category of environmental sustainability of businesses in 2009.

The Jamnagar Manufacturing Division (DTA Refinery) received the ‘International Safety Award- 2008’ from the British Safety Council in 2009.

The Jamnagar Manufacturing Division received the ‘Golden Peacock Environment Management Award 2009’ in the Petrochemicals sector in 2009.

The Jamnagar Manufacturing Division received the ‘Greentech Environment Excellence Platinum Award 2009’ in the Petroleum Refinery sector in 2009.

The Naroda Manufacturing Division received a certificate of appreciation in consideration of safety performance for the year 2008 from the Gujarat Safety Council and the Director of Industrial Safety and Health in 2009.

The Patalganga Manufacturing Division was bestowed with the Dahanukar trophy for the ‘Best Occupational Health Services in an Industry’ by the Indian Association of Occupational Health (IAOH)in 2009.
