HALLOWEEN OR ALL HALLOW’S (HOLY) EVE?

Even in childhood, I had ambivalence about “Halloween.” It was confusing to dress in costume as

an ugly creature to receive candy. It was a relief to learn the origins of Halloween, a shortened version

of All Hallows' Eve (the evening before All Saints Day when the Church remembers those considered

to be saints (hallowed/holy) or martyrs.

Halloween traditions originated from ancient Celtic harvest festivals, particularly the Gaelic festival

Samhain, which meant summer's end. It marked the end of harvest season and beginning of winter;

when the boundary between this world and the other was thinned, so “spirits” could enter and be active.

These “spirits” were both respected and feared, so God’s Protection was evoked over homes. Food

and drink were left out to ensure people and livestock would survive the winter. The souls of the dead

were also believed to visit homes seeking hospitality. Places were set at dinner tables, candles were lit

and prayers were formally offered.

The flames and smoke of bonfires were believed to have protective, cleansing powers. So, torches

lit from bonfires were carried around homes and fields to protect them.

By the 12th century, churches rang bells for the souls in purgatory. Criers dressed in black paraded

Page 2: rinity Newsthetrinityucc.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/November... · 2019. 4. 27. · ~ Ephesians 1:7-8a (New Revised Standard Version of the Bible) I hate to make “To Do” lists

the streets, ringing a mournful bell, calling Christians to remember poor souls. "Souling," the custom of

baking and sharing soul cakes was probably the origin of trick-or-treating. Children went door-to-door

collecting soul cakes (marked with a cross to indicate they were baked as alms), in exchange for praying

for the dead.

Jack-o'-lanterns are still carried today. A folktale suggests they represents "souls who have been

denied entry into both heaven and hell.” Going home after a night's drinking, Jack encountered the devil

and tricked him into climbing a tree. To trap the devil, Jack etched the sign of the cross into the bark,

and struck a bargain: the devil could never claim his soul. At death, Jack was refused entry to heaven

and to hell. In frustration, the devil threw a live coal from the fires of hell at him. Jack put the coal in a

hollowed-out turnip to keep it from going out. Since then, Jack and his lantern have roamed about

looking for a place to rest.

In the early Church, vigils were always held the night before a feast, including the Feast of All

Hallows, a time to honor the saints and pray for recently departed souls who had yet to reach Heaven.

I pray the Church still believes in the importance of honoring the departed souls of the saints on All

Saints Day and spends time in prayer the night before on All Hallows Eve. How will you celebrate this

event this year?

In Christ’s Love and Kare,

Pastor Karen

Paul’s Ponderings

November: A Month for Remembering and Giving Thanks

“In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses,

according to the riches of his grace that He lavished on us.” ~ Ephesians 1:7-8a (New Revised Standard Version of the Bible)

I hate to make “To Do” lists. But summer is often the season of graduations and weddings,

and this past summer was no exception for us: my son Liam graduated from college and my daughter Laurel got married! So Karen and I planned brief vacations to attend the

ceremonies. I would check off the things I got done and lament the things I had left to do. (I can’t recall the last time I actually honestly completed everything on my “To Do”

list!) Perhaps that’s because, as my grandmother always used to tell me, “Paul, your eyes

are bigger than your stomach.” I saw what I wanted to eat, but I took more than I could fit into my stomach. The phrase still fits me: I see what I need to get done today, but I

lack the stamina to do it. I see what I want for my life, but I can’t have it all. I see what I want to change about my life, but I can’t make it happen overnight. I see things God may

want to change about a congregation, but even a pastor cannot make such things happen by himself or herself. A prayerful consensus of the people, and the active energy of God’s

Holy Spirit, must be present in the midst of what God desires to change.

I am reminded of something one of my seminary teachers, Dr. James Forbes, said in a class where one student wanted to know why African-American congregations seemed to

be thriving and alive while so many white or “Caucasian” congregations seemed to be

frozen in apathy and indifference. Dr. Forbes told us, “In predominately Caucasian churches, people tend to believe God needs them; in predominately African-American

churches people understand that they need God.”

Sometimes we worry upon “what I need to do” or “what we have to do.” So we focus on making a sacrifice or giving something up or praying harder. But the Apostle Paul reminds

us that believing is all about what Jesus did. Grab your Bible and read what Paul tells the Ephesians – how Jesus overcame the power of Sin over our lives! The late Eugene

Peterson, local church pastor and Bible paraphraser-extraordinaire, expressed verses 7 and 8 of the first chapter of Ephesians like this in The Message: “Because of the sacrifice

of the Messiah, his blood poured out on the altar of the Cross, we're a free

people--free of penalties and punishments chalked up by all our misdeeds. And

not just barely free, either. Abundantly free!”

Let that sink in. Let these words remain with you, and for a little while, remember that it’s

O.K. not to do anything but to simply dwell in the presence of Jesus and His love, and just give thanks. You need God. I do too. And for today, it is enough to simply dwell in the

presence – as the ancients would say, to be “washed in the blood” – and be grateful.

May the blessings of the Thanksgiving Season be yours in abundance!

Pastor Paul

The Biggest Weakness - Submitted by Dan McClain –

A 10-year old decided to study judo despite the fact he had lost his left arm in a car accident. The boy began lessons with an old Japanese judo master. The boy was doing well but could not understand after 3 months of training the master had taught him only one move. When the boy questioned the teacher, the teacher responded, “This is the only move you know, but this is the only move you’ll ever need to know.” Not quite understanding but believing in his teacher, the boy kept training. Several months later the teacher took the boy to his first tournament. The boy easily won his first two matches. The third match proved to be more difficult, but after some time, his opponent became impatient and charged; the boy deftly used his one move to win the match and was now in the finals. This time his opponent was bigger, stronger, and more experienced. For a while, the boy appeared to be overmatched. Concerned that the boy might get hurt, the referee called a time-out. He was about to stop the match when the teacher intervened. “No,” the teacher insisted, “Let him continue.” Soon the match resumed, his opponent made a critical mistake: he dropped his guard. Instantly, the boy used his move to pin him. The boy had won the match and the tournament. He was the champion. One the way home, the boy and his teacher reviewed every move in each match. Then the boy summoned the courage to ask what was really on his mind. “How did I win the tournament with only one move,” he asked his teacher. The teacher answered, “You won for 2 reasons,” “First, you’ve almost mastered one of the most difficult throws in all of the judo. And second, the only known defense for that move is for your opponent to grab your left arm.” The boy’s biggest weakness had become his biggest strength.

Moral: Sometimes we feel that we have certain weaknesses and we blame God, the circumstances, or ourselves for it, but we never know that our weaknesses can become our strengths one day. Each of us is special and important, so never think you have any weakness, never think of pride or pain, just live your life to its fullest and extract the best out of it!
