POINTS OF INTEREST:

Dear Members of Trinity Lutheran,

On June 13th and 14th, pastors, rostered leaders, and dele-

gates from all over the South Dakota synod will gather in Sioux Falls for our annual syn-od assembly. The theme for this year’s assembly is “Unbound to Live”, taken from Christ’s words “Unbind him, and let him go”, found in the story of the raising of Lazarus in John’s gospel.

On a personal level, I am excit-ed for synod assembly as those who attend will get to hear from the Rev. Keith Anderson, a pas-tor from Pennsylvania who has written, and speaks to many church groups about, the ways in which our uses of social media impact “face-to-face ministry”. We will also be joining for times of worship with the music duo, “Tangled Blue. And, of most im-portance, we will be discussing issues within the SD synod and our partnerships with synods around the world.

This theme, though, has me

hooked and intrigued as we move further into the summer. We’re still a month from the synod assembly as I write this, so I’m not sure exactly how the theme will be implemented, so I will be excited to share about it with you when I return.

The story of Lazarus’ raising is one that I find powerful and full of hope. I preached on this text from John 11 some time ago, but I DO think about it quite frequent-ly. In that moment, Jesus is not only bringing Lazarus back to life, but restoring him fully and inviting him back to his commu-nity. This is something Lazarus could not do alone. As he had to be unbound by friends and neighbors in order to live again in community, we are called to unbind one another so that we might be in community.

On a synod level, congrega-tions work to support one anoth-er through giving, prayer, and other types of support. Without

FROM CYNTHIA WALL:June 2014Greetings,

This is the first real warm evening tonight. As I

drove home from work the campground looked nearly full and driving up the hill to my home I noticed the boats on the river. This time of year is always filled with so much an-ticipation for me. During my childhood I looked forward to the summer activities and the accomplishments through hard work on the farm. Plan-ning the summer for my chil-dren always resulted in some angst in having their days full of fun while I was at work. Now I look at this time antici-pating the opportunities to see my children/grandchildren during the summer. During my lifetime the summer vaca-tion is always a highlight with much time spent planning all the aspects of it as part of the fun. Our congregation is moving into summer, we have much anticipation, hard work, angst, planning and accom-plishments to be looking for-ward to.

Please check out the infor-mation about the summer bi-ble study. I am anticipating as challenging and intriguing conversations as we have had with the last study. We will continue through the summer on the fourth Tuesday morn-ing and Wednesday evening. If anyone would like an alter-native time for another small group let’s get it started!

Creating the care kits con-tinues. We have created some packets of cut gowns and dia-pers for anyone to take home and sew. We will soon have some quilt top packets to sew also. Look for the bulletin board and demonstration ta-bles after church for more in-formation.

“Where are we going on vacation?” “What should I take to the fair/achievement days?” “When are we going to start baling hay?” “When are we going to work the cat-tle?” “When is our first swim meet?” I love summer!

WELCA Synodical Con-vention, June 20-21 at First Lutheran, BrookingsTheme: Who Me?? Women of Faith Making a DifferenceTheme verse: Micah 6:8 “. . . And what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to live kindness, and to walk hum-bly with your God?”

There will be a variety of speakers, break-out sessions and activities. The convention is officially Friday all day and evening, and Saturday morning. There will be some activities on Thursday and Thursday eve-ning.

Please Note: The Leadership training workshop will be held during the convention for ALL Conference Officers. Please plan to attend.

More information about the Synodical Convention is found in the Winter 2014 issue of South Dakota Synodical of the Women of the ELCA, which is posted on the Trinity bulletin board. BIBLE STUDY — SUMMER 2014: OF MANY GENERATIONS — MARY, ELIZABETH, LYDIA

We are women of “of many generations”, many ages, many places, and many experi-

ences. We have a calling to Diane Jacobson, come, learn, and serve together, as well as to rebuild, re-pair, and restore not only our own relationships, but also the world around us.

To do this we look to Scripture for stories that take us into this calling. We look for stories of women who come together, women who under-stand themselves to be part of a multi-generation-al community and who have known both chal-lenge and joy.

“I can think of no better stories than the two we will read together this summer. In the first session, we will look at the remarkable meeting of two generations of women in Mary and Elizabeth,” wrote the author of the study, Dr. Diane Jacob-son, pictured at right. “We will look at their sto-

ries and come to know them. Then in the next session we will explore Mary’s song that she sings in response both to Elizabeth’s greeting and to all that has happened to her.

“In the final session, we will turn to the story of Lydia that also explores a gathering of women that raises up the foundation of many generations.”

Diane Jacobson is professor emeritus of Old Tes-tament at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, MN, where she taught from 1982-2010. Director of the Book of Faith Initiative for the ELCA, she holds a Ph.D. from Union Theological University, New York, NY.

one another, we may function, but not always well. So we meet to talk about the state of our syn-od and the needs of congrega-tions. We unbind one another to live and to grow into the people of God that Jesus calls us to be.

On a congregational level, this is similar. As our summer goes on, I invite you to pray for one another, to come together in times of joy and in times of

need. To unbind one another’s hurts and insecurities, so that this community can continue to be strong and united. Perhaps at times we are like Lazarus, and at other times maybe we are like his neighbors and friends. We need to be unbound so that we can live; we need to unbind oth-ers so that they can live.

It’s not always an easy job for a synod or congregation to do

this “unbinding”, but through prayer, service, and trust in the Triune God who binds us as one body of Christ, it is possi-ble. New, vibrant life in Christ is possible for our synod, our con-gregation, our families, and for us all. Peace and Blessings,Vicar Lisa

TRINITY LUTHERAN DEACON’S MEETING MINUTES

The Deacon’s monthly meeting was held on May 8th at 7 PM.

Members present included: Vicar Lisa, Judy Swanson, Bonnie Luurs, Joan and Mike Trumm, Dianne Graves, Lori Tonak, Joyce Wevik, and Jean Blackwell. Absent: Maria Birch

Joan Trumm led the May devotions.

Minutes of the previous meeting were not read.

OLD BUSINESS:

• Palm Sunday brunch went well with an attendance of 70 to 80 people and raised $362 for the summer camper fund.

• Deacons discussed future activities and will continue with the 5th Sunday Brunch. Jean Black-well and Dianne Graves volunteered to do set-up preparations for the June 29th brunch.

• The weekly summer fellowship coffee’s will be discontinued.

• Pies will be provided for the Long Term Care Center.

• The Motorcycle Association Luncheon will be a Youth activity function in the future.

NEW BUSINESS:

• Vicar Lisa is to be contacted if supplies are needed for the brunches or other functions.

• Discussed ways to eliminate the sign-up clip boards during services. It was felt that it has been the only successful means of obtaining congregational support. To eliminate the need for mul-tiple clip boards it was recommended that we place the needs lists on one clip board with tabs to reduce the clutter and distraction during services. Otherwise the Deacon’s will be forced to call congregation members directly to try and fill the service needs of the church.

• Deacons would like to present a “Thank You Candle for the Choir” to show our appreciation for their beautiful music and service to the congregation.

• There was discussion about having a new member orientation dinner instead of a pizza party or some other alternative.

• The Trinity scholarship fund is nearly exhausted and there was discussion about needing to start fund raising or restarting the once per month Thrivent coffees.

• October will be the 30th anniversary of the Prison Congregation Ministry and they are asking that congregations participate in a fund raiser to provide a $10,000 gift to the ministry.

• Prayer list was updated.

The meeting closed with the Lord’s Prayer.

Next meeting is scheduled for 7 PM on June 6th at the church.
