The 19th Annual World Aviation Training Conference and TradeshowWATS 2016 is dedicated to airlines, training organizations, training and simulation equipment suppliers and regulators to meet and network in a professional, focused and targeted forum. WATS goal is to provide answers to training questions, and practical solutions to day to day training challenges, while addressing long term industry trends. WATS aim is to underpin the critical safety programs and processes that enable the global airline industry.

Targeted ProgramThis year’s theme is ‘Optimizing Blended Learning & Training Technology’. The now pressing demand to recruit and train talented personnel to fill the pilot, maintenance and other staff shortages will be a key focus of

the event. Recruitment and selection (identifying those with the ‘right stuff’) will be key, and once recruited the optimum use of new technologies, mentoring, guidance and teaching will be basic to the successful conversion of those recruits to airline professionals.

Conference StreamsFive complimentary streams:• World Airline Pilots (WATS Pilot)• Regional Airline Pilots (RATS)• Cabin Crew (WATS Cabin)• Maintenance (WATS Maintenance)• Helicopter Aviation Training (HATS)

New in 2016 is a formal program to encourage students and help them transition from their college careers to the airline world.

Students from aviation academies and universities are being invited to attend WATS to join our airline community and learn what it takes to be a pilot or maintainer once they have completed their course. A recent meeting at the RAA showed how few university students have a real grasp of what to expect at an airline or through their career. SECA will address the opportunity that is open to them and the practical ‘how to’ of how to approach airline recruiters and prepare for a career in aviation.

A morning session outlining the opportunities offered by a growing global airline industry will be followed by an opportunity for them to visit the exhibits. After lunch a moderated session with airline leaders and an extensive ‘talk back’ session will give students an opportunity to ask questions and compare notes on the day.

There is acceptance that the global airline industry faces a critical shortage of personnel. The current generation of students, from university to middle school, will provide the future members of our industry. In order for that to happen our industry, and governments, must make the career attractive and attainable to all sexes and ethnicities. A career path that enables students and their parents to see their ROI is basic to that aim. Funding for education and training, the pathway from education to the airlines, and a career once qualified must all be more obvious tomorrow than they are today. Those discussions will underlay the WATS and SECA conferences.
