INTRODUCTION

Last year we marked 11 years of the world’s greatest tube riding contest in the most fitting of fashions. Not only was the Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang graced with the finest swell of the season but hometown hero Garut Widiarta went toe-to-toe with his cousin Raditya “Cabul” Rondi in a sizzling shootout to take the trophy in an incredible final, the first ever man-on-man end game.

In 2015 we’ve upped the ante once again. The Rip Curl Cup field has been streamlined and for the first time ever all heats will be man-on-man, ensuring that only the purest of surfing is showcased at Bali’s most famed wave. This dedication to two-man battle has seen the field and waiting periods reduced, guaranteeing that when it’s on, the Rip Curl Cup Padang

Padang will well and truly be on.

From August 1st to 31st the eyes of the surfing world will be focussed on Bali’s famous Bukit Peninsula to see if the elite list of invited barrel riders can add their names to an honour roll that includes everyone from Pipe Master Jamie O’Brien to two-time local victors Lee Wilson and Made “Bol” Adi Putra. Widiarta’s win last year, on the back of Bukit local’s Mega Semahdi’s success the year previous, has only added to the prestige that the Indonesian surfers attach to the event Garut calls, “the best of the best!”

In 2015 the field will consist of 16 surfers; made up of eight internationals and eight locals. The eight international surfers will

come from Rip Curl riders Tom Curren, Bruno Santos, Mason Ho, Tim Bisso, Pat Curren and Jacob Wilcox, and their ranks will be bolstered by powerhouse invitees Jamie O’Brien, Damien Hobgood, Jay Davies, Ry Craike and Chris Ward.

The home team stars Garut Widiarta, Mega Semadhi, Lee Wilson, Rizal Tanjung, Made “Bol” Adi Putra and Raditya Rondi. This list will be boosted with the addition of the Rip Curl wildcard, and the winner of the Rip Curl Cup trials. With this year’s reduced field the battle for that elusive trials spot will be intensified further, with many suggesting a win in the trials is as hard to come by as a win in the main event!

The reduced numbers and straight man-on-man elimination format means that the Rip Curl Cup can be run in one day, further increasing the likelihood of firing conditions for all heats.

As always the Rip Curl Cup will be webcast live to the world via LIVE.RIPCURL.COM and on your smartphone with the Rip Curl Live Events App.

EVENT MAP PADANG - PADANG

Padang Padang is the jewel in Balinese surfing’s crown but it is a rare gem, and scoring this mythical wave is easier said than done. We asked reigning event champion Garut Widiarta to break down what makes the wave tick, and he gave us an in-depth look at the mechanics of Padang Padang.

GARUT: Padang is our proving grounds. There are so many amazing barrels in Indo, and every year it seems like there is a new discovery of some crazy new wave, but Padang is still the original Bali Pipeline. It’s the spot where you’re guaranteed to see the boys like Rizal and Bol out when there’s a really big swell in prime season. In Bali,

if you want to be respected in big barrels, you have to show up at Padang. Padang works best on a huge southwest swell – the more west the better – and medium-low tides. It needs SE dry season trade winds to really be classic Padang and the early can suffer from morning sickness lumpiness a lot of the time. It’s super fickle and doesn’t all come together very often, but when it does, Padang is still one of my all time favourite barrels in Indo.

A. TEMPLEOn your way down to the beach from the road you go past the Labuan Sait Temple, where the local people from Pecatu village come to celebrate the Melasti

ceremony. We also come here for a special ceremony to ask for good waves and a safe event at the opening ceremony for the Padang Cup every year. You have to walk down the steps, past the temple, and through a narrow cave to get to the beach. Sometimes there can be a lot of foot traffic, so be patient because not many people can fit in the rock tunnel. And watch out for monkeys!

B. BEACHPadang is one of the best spots in Bali to watch the sunset. It’s a full scene here at sunset and the sand is packed with people from all over the world: hot chicks in tiny

bikinis, strange characters playing weird instruments, even the ice cream man. When a big west swell is hitting Bali, all the boys will be hanging out in the warungs on the beach before and after their surfs, enjoying a Bintang and watching the show on the beach and in the lineup.

C. PADDLE OUT & CHANNELThe paddle out at Padang is pretty straightforward and easy, which is one of the reasons why it gets so crowded out there. Just paddle straight out from the beach through the deep water channel. At low tide when there is a solid swell there can be a strong rip current running out, so save some energy for the paddle back in against the rip.

D. FISHERMAN’S ROCKThis rock is a favorite spot for local fishermen to cast lines. You paddle right by them on your way out to the break. The view of the fishermen on the rock while a surfer gets a deep tube in the background is one of those special things about Padang and they are often in the foreground in a lot of the most famous surf shots of Padang. Watch out you don’t get hooked on their lines when paddling out!

E. TAKE OFF ZONEIt’s a really small takeoff area at Padang, which means there’s not a lot of waves to go around, especially when it’s crowded with 50+ surfers and bodyboarders. Padang doesn’t break often, so when it does everyone wants to get one of those perfect green barrels. The wave is a pretty straightforward drop into a perfect yawning barrel. After that it’s a grinding barrel and a race to the exit. The wave is usually pretty short. Just stand tall and get spat out.

Page 10: Rip Curl Cup 2015 Media Guide

10

F. INSIDE BOWLThis is the inside bowl section where the barrel can open up really wide. On a good day this section is usually packed with water photographers setting up for the money shot. This is also where you can get pinched if the swell is too south or the tide is too high. Or you get spat out onto the shoulder and either do a big turn or throw a big claim if you’re into that kind of thing. It can get really shallow on the inside and if you don’t make the barrel, you can wind up on the reef at low tide. The reef here is sharp and filled with spikes and holes. A wipeout at any tide can mean a scalping, but especially at lower tides.

G. OUTSIDE CORNER (ULUWATU)Outside Corner needs to be at least 8-10 feet for Padang to really start breaking. The cool thing is that you can see the sets breaking up at The Corner before they hit down at Padang, so you have a pretty good indicator when a big set is coming. On super big swells, sometimes guys get washed down from Outside Corner and have to come in through the channel at Padang.

H. PADANG RIGHT & IMPOSSIBLESOn small days, the right across the channel from Padang is one of the best beginner waves on Bali. It’s usually super crowded and can almost be more dangerous than real Padang because of all the surf camps and out of control beginners crashing into each other with big longboards. Further north, the lefts at Impossibles can be really fun on a bigger day. Super fast walls and barrel sections. Bring your Mach 5 channel bottom board.

I. CLIFF LOOKOUT & JUDGES’ TOWER

This is where most people check the wave from these days (the old check spot looking into the wave has been taken over by a big hotel). This is also where the judges’ tower is positioned for the Rip Curl Cup. On a good day of waves at Padang, the cliff will be covered with people and they’ll usually start screaming when there’s big set stacking up on the horizon. Coming out of a deep Padang barrel to the sound of people hooting on the cliff is still one of the best feelings in surfing.

The Rip Curl Cup was designed by local Balinese artists at MOD Jewellery, makers of many past World Surf League championship rings and awards. It is hand carved from teak, and inlayed with silver.

The bowl is in the shape of a flower, mounted on wood made to look like a craggy chunk of the Padang reef. In the tradition of all great sporting prizes, the winner’s name is inscribed on the trophy. Each winner receives his own version of the trophy, but the original Cup remains at Rip Curl headquarters in Bali for all to behold.

INTERVIEW

“An Audience With The King”

GARUT WIDIARTA

Last year hometown hero Garut Widiarta went toe-to-toe with his cousin Raditya “Cabul” Rondi in an incredible shootout to claim the Rip Curl Cup in an incredible final. On the eve of this year’s competition we thought we’d better have a chat with the champ to see how it all went down, and what he’s got in store for us in 2015.

Garut! A year later has your Rip Curl Cup win sunk in yet?I’m still tripping! I can’t believe I won it. There are so many tough guys to beat in the draw, the international invitees and the locals. I’ve competed in all 11 years in the event’s history, and for 10 years I never did well. Third round, quarters maybe, then knocked. Last year, to make the final with my cousin, in pumping waves, was incredible!

Tell us about the first time you competed in the Rip Curl Cup?I was 17! It was big Padang and I was so small! We were riding big boards too, 6’4”, and really thick. We’re on much shorter equipment now, the wave is still the same but we’re taking off under the lip, not sitting wide. Back then you were looking for the one barrel, but now it’s two on every wave, pull in straight away, come out and then fade for the inside. If you can get one that links all the way through, that’s a score for sure!

You and Raditya Rondi caught 22 waves between you in the final last year!

The tide was really low, there was no water on the reef, and the waves just kept coming! It was dangerous but it was so nice and clean and you just couldn’t think about hitting the bottom. I’ve never seen it like that, the swell is big and thick and crazy. It didn’t feel like a final, we were just surfing, talking, laughing! We were sharing waves, like,”Are you going this one?” Afterwards, on the stage with my cousin, thousands of people on the beach, all of our family, everyone’s screaming, I almost cried! I was pretty stoked, best day of my life.

How does the Rip Curl Cup stack up alongside all of the other Indonesian contests? It’s the best of the best! There’s no more prestigious event in the country, but there’s pride with competing against all of the international guys too. If you can’t win, you definitely want someone from Team Indonesia to claim it, and we’re all pushing each other and encouraging each other as much as possible.

Last year was the first two man final and this year the whole event is man-on-man, how exciting is that? It’s going to be even better, wow. There’s a smaller field too so the trials will be

Page 13: Rip Curl Cup 2015 Media Guide

13

incredible, everyone’s going to be very hungry. A lot of regulars in the main event from the past few years are back in the trials so it’s going to be tough!

What’s it like winning your sponsor’s event?Rip Curl have sponsored a lot of comps in Indonesia over the years, and I’ve never had much luck. Last year I came second in two Rip Curl events, and the boys in the office were starting to give me a bit of a hard time. So to finally come through in the biggest event of them all is awesome, and everybody’s happy again in the office! Me included.

Anything different about your preparation this year? No, I’m chill. I’m even going to ride the same board again, it’s so good. My DHD with the Godzilla design on it is the one!

Apart from yourself who should we be looking out for in this year’s Rip Curl Cup?Hmmm, everyone is hard to beat in their

own way. Made “Bol” Adi Putra is always on fire out there, always picks the right wave. He’s won it, Mega Semahdi has won it, he’s dangerous. Rizal Tanjung has never won it, same as Cabul, so they both want it. I was almost sad beating Raditya last year, in the last minute too.

Tell us about that.Well, he had priority. That was looked small but I could see it was lining up, so I asked Cabul if he was going and he wasn’t into it. I sort of couldn’t believe it, but I knew I needed a really high score so he probably thought it was unlikely. I knew if I didn’t make the barrel I’d lose, but if I could come out I was a chance. So I stalled and stalled and got a triple barrel, the best wave I’ve ever had at Padang Padang, and I came out disbelieving. I was on the foamball the whole way, my tail kept sliding out, and then I got spat out. I had no clue if I’d got the score then I saw one of the water patrol with his fist raised, and he was like, “you got it!” And then I started screaming.

INVITEES

Bruno Santos

Mason Ho

Tim Bisso

Tom Curren

Pat Curren

The all time list of WCT event winners is a short and incredibly distinguished one. The list of those who’ve taken out CTs as wildcards is virtually non-existent, but that’s what Brazilian Bruno Santos, winner of the Billabong Pro Tahiti did in 2008. A permanent ticket holder on Rip Curl’s Search missions, Santos is a slave to the lure of left barrels, his participation in the Rip Curl Cup a given.

If excitement’s what you want, excitement’s what you’ll get with the addition of Mason Ho to Rip Curl’s team, and his subsequent invite to join the 2015 Rip Curl Cup line-up. One of the most exciting surfers in the world, Mason is phenomenally talented and wildly unpredictable, whether he’s surfing two-foot Rocky Point, or 10-foot heaving Pipeline.

Hailing from Guadelopue in the Caribbean, Tim Bisso might not be the most well-known surfer in the field, but that doesn’t mean you should ever underestimate him. A promising junior, Bisso is thrilled to be appearing alongside many of his heroes in this year’s event and the stylish goofy-foot is a dark horse threat of causing an upset.

One of surfing’s genuine living legends, Rip Curl are thrilled that three-time world champion (85, 86, 90) Tom Curren has accepted an invite to compete in the 2015 Rip Curl Cup. Although famed for his work on his forehand, it will be good to see Curren come in with nothing to prove and plenty to gain with his bum against the wall.

Jamie O’Brien

Jacob Willcox

Damien Hobgood

Jay Davies

Ry Craike

Chris Ward

Jacob “Chippo” Willcox came within a whisker of beating three Balinese surfers in the final of the Rip Curl Cup in 2013. Attempting to style his way out of the tube that would have handed him the trophy, Jacob was clipped, and just fell. Such is Jacob’s advanced level in heaving lefts that he admitted afterwards he’d never surfed Padang Padang previously, but “found it pretty easy”

Speaking of CT-winning wildcards, take a bow Jamie O’Brien. More than winning the Pipe Masters and being a permanent invite to Quiksilver’s Eddie Aikau Memorial, JOB claims the day he won the Rip Curl Cup in 2009 as one of the best of his life. “I got so barreled!” the Hawaiian screams, I’ve never had so much fun in a surf contest in my life.”

Florida’s Damien Hobgood is a massive addition to the Rip Curl Cup 2015 lineup. A lunatic when the waves demand it, the hugely respected Hobgood has won at multiple draining lefts on the WCT, and is fired up to add the Cup to his list of scalps.

The wildcard the world loves the most is in town for the Rip Curl Cup and ready to flex some muscle. As we saw at Margaret River earlier this year, where Jay knocked out two world champs en route to the quarters, the Hulk charges in the juice and will surely be in the mix come finals time.

The all-fishin’, all-4WDin’, all surfin’ adventure guy is back in town again to show that he’s so much more than a famous talking head on TV in Australia. Every aspect of this comp appeals to Craike, the first-place prize money the least of his inspirations in the face of just having an all round bloody good day at Padang.

Who knows what to say about a surfer who doesn’t know what’s coming next himself? In 2012, that meant a win followed by a marriage proposal and then a stage collapse. Ward’s work in the early Lost videos was magic, and he carries that same sense of enigma and showmanship with him still. Will it be enough to conjure up a result? Only time will tell.

INVITEES

Garut Widiarta

Mega Semadhi

Lee Wilson

Rizal Tandjung

Raditya Rondi

The reigning Padang champion comes from just down the hill at Kuta Beach. As well as being a bandit in the tube the lightning quick goofy-footer has an incredible repertoire of flashy maneuvers at and above the lip. Garut is a threat at Padang no matter the size, and will be hard to beat in 2015.

The 2013 event champion was the first Bukit Peninsula local to ever claim the Cup and celebrated by leading the beach in a rousing rendition of the Indonesian national anthem. Mega is a standout in draining left barrels the length of the archipelago, and after an early exit last year will be looking to strike back in 2015.

Two-time winner Wilson is arguably the most complete all-around surfer in Indonesia, with an air game to match anyone in the world and the minerals needed to charge seriously heavy duty waves. On his day Lee is unstoppable, and we wait with baited breath to see if 2015 is the year he unleashes and becomes the first to claim three Rip Curl Cups.

The Godfather of Indonesian surfing in the ‘90s has long seen the Rip Curl Cup as the one that got away. One of the most respected Balinese surfers of all time has had the fame, the video parts and the recognition of his peers for years, can he add a Cup to his collection before he calls it quits? Maybe 2015 is the year.

The man they call Cabul lost the final to his cousin Garut last year, and though Raditya would have been excited to see the trophy go to his native Jalan Benesari in Kuta, you just know a small part of the powerful goofy-footer would have been wishing it was his name on the trophy. A former Asian champion, Rondi is a lethal competitor who can never be taken lightly at Padang Padang.

Made “Bol” Adi Putra

Rip Curl Wild CardUsman Trioko

Rip Curl Trials Winner

Alongside Lee Wilson, Bol is the only man to have twice won the Rip Curl Cup. It has, however, been over a decade since he last hoisted the trophy and you just know he won’t be happy about that. A long-limbed and stylish goofy-footer, Bol is as comfortable in the pit as he is hucking airs over burly sections, and can never be ruled out.

Rip Curl Wild Card, Usman Trioko – Talk to any visitor to Desert Point about the best local surfers, and one name always pops up, Usman Trioko. This year, the long time Rip Curl rider gets the opportunity to bring his game from Lombok’s most perfect left, to challenge the world at Padang Padang. It won’t be easy, but if anyone can, Usman can.

PAST CHAMPIONS

The list of past Rip Curl Cup champions includes some of the finest tuberiders of the

modern era. Who will drink from the Cup in 2015?

Stay tuned to find out...

2004, 2005

Bol Adi PutraThe inaugural Rip Curl Cup in 2004 was held at Uluwatu, while 2005 featured some of the best waves in the event’s history: six-foot (Hawaiian) solid Padang, on fire. In addition to his back-to-back titles, Bol has also made the finals twice, in 2009 and 2011, cementing his reputation as perhaps the most dangerous competitor out at Padang. “It was so sick, especially in 2005 because it was just the best Padang,” says Bol. “I got the bomb of the contest and it ended up in a double-page spread in Surfing Magazine. And then the whole contest was featured in the movie Shades of Bali, so my sponsor was so happy at that time. Padang is pretty much my favorite wave. I love it. Best left in Bali.”

2006

Lee WilsonThe 2006 Rip Curl Cup was held at textbook perfect Bingin with Lee Wilson and Lakey Peak local Joey Barrel trading stand-up barrels in the final. Wilson took the Cup with a beautiful wave in the dying minutes, on dead low tide. “I was behind the whole time and needed high nine,” recalls Wilson. “I found it in the last couple minutes. I got a deep barrel, did a big reo and then went for a floater on the end section onto the reef. It was pretty dry but you’ve got to lay it on the line.”

2008

Kane Faint

Gogo Sujaya

Good waves fired for the early morning heats at Padang and hung around for the final, which saw 4-foot drainers at low tide. Faint, an underground charger from Lennox Head, Australia, pigdogged his way through several spitting Padang pits on his way to victory in the first-ever Padang Cup to feature international competitors against the locals. “It was an absolute honor to compete at the iconic Rip Curl Padang Cup,” says Kane, “and to take the win was just a bonus.”

Gogo defeated Dede Suryana in the final at Uluwatu, which featured long rides and solid tubes at good 3 to 4-foot Racetrack. With the win, Gogo earned a wildcard into the Rip Curl Pro Search WCT event, held at Padang and Ulus. “I was so happy,” says Gogo. “It was the only time in my life I got to surf against the WCT guys. In Round 1 I surfed with Kelly (Slater) and Timmy Reyes. In the second round I surfed against Taj Burrow. I will never forget that.”

Page 24: Rip Curl Cup 2015 Media Guide

24

2009

Jamie O’BrienOn the best day of the year at Padang, the final came down to the event’s only two-time champion versus the youngest Pipe Master in history. After all the spray had cleared, Hawaii’s Jamie O’Brien beat out Kuta’s Made “Bol” Adi Putra to claim the title. O’Brien scored an unheard-of four perfect 10s during the event, including two in Round 2 for a flawless heat score. All told, the ‘09 Padang Cup was one of the greatest collective displays of tuberiding in the history of competitive surfing. “This is right up there with my Pipe Masters and Teahupoo trials wins,” O’Brien said after being escorted from the beach to the winner’s podium on the shoulders of his friends and soaked with champagne. “I got so barreled today. I’ve never had so much fun in a surf contest in my life.”

2011

Lee WilsonAfter a one-year hiatus, 2011 saw the return of the Rip Curl Cup, once again held in epic barrels at Padang Padang. Indonesia’s Lee Wilson backdoored several impossibly deep barrels on his backhand to win his second Rip Curl Cup, defeating one of the most talented fields in event history, including the likes of Chris Ward (California), Makua Rothman (Hawaii), Anthony Walsh (Australia), and Dean Morrison

(Australia). With the victory, Wilson claimed the Cup back for Indonesia from reigning champion Jamie O’Brien and joined fellow Indo legend Bol Adi Putra as the only other two-time winner of the Rip Curl Cup. “This is the best win I’ve ever had, hands down,” Wilson said.

PAST CHAMPIONS

25

With barely a minute remaining in the ninth annual Rip Curl Cup Invitational at Padang Padang, California’s Chris Ward scored a perfect 10 backside barrel to leapfrog into first place and win the Ultimate Tuberiding Contest, besting Bali’s Mega Semadhi (2nd place), Java’s Dede Suryana (3rd), and Australia’s Ry Craike (4th) in pumping six-foot tubes at Padang Padang. Wardo followed

it up by getting down on one knee and proposing to his girlfriend on the winner’s podium in front of a massive crowd. She said yes, at which point people rushed the stage and it collapsed (no one was hurt). All of this before the 33-year-old Ward even had a chance to shake off his jet lag. Another epic Padang Cup moment for the ages.

2012

2013

Chris Ward

Mega SemadhiMega Semadhi made history last year when he became the first-ever Padang (Bukit Peninsula) local to win the Rip Curl Cup. By topping a field of world-class barrel riders from Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti, USA, Hawaii, and Brazil, Mega established Indonesian surfing as a force to be reckoned with. The local crowd on hand at Padang erupted after Mega scored a comeback victory in the final, leapfrogging 16-year-old West Australian Jacob Willcox and Kuta’s Raditya Rondi for first place. Mega was absolutely ecstatic with his comeback win in his 10th Rip Curl Cup appearance and to be able to get the monkey off his back that had haunted him since the previous year’s bitter last-second runner-up defeat to Chris Ward. “This win means so much to me, here at my home and in front of my family, and because of last year too,” Semadhi said. “In those final minutes I was trying to be patient, thinking that if I could lose in the final minutes like last year, I could also be the one to win in the last minute too. When that last set came in I said not this one, not this one, I gotta pick the right one. And then it was like a fairly tale come true when I heard the score and that I won.”

Page 26: Rip Curl Cup 2015 Media Guide

26

2014

Garut WidiartaLike Mega Semadhi the year before, Garut Widiarta is another Balinese surfer who’s competed in every year of the Rip Curl Cup, and in 2014 it was his turn to get his name on Indonesia’s most prestigious trophy. In the first ever man-on-man final in Padang Padang history Garut won a mind-blowing barrelfest of a final, from his cousin and close friend Radity Rondi, with the best wave he’s ever had at Padang in the dying minutes. The 2014 event was also noteworthy for the incredible waves seen in the trials, some of the best Padang Padang conditions in recent memory.
